I recovered well-preserved radiolarian assemblages from the Quaternary sediments drilled at all four sites at the mouth of the Gulf of California during Leg 65. The sites, with positions and water depths averaged for all hole locations per site, are Site 482 - 22°47.4'N, 107°59.6'W; water depth, 3022 meters. Site 483 - 22°53.0'N, 108°44.8' W; water depth, 3070 meters. Site 484 - 23°11.2'N, 108°23.6'W; water depth, 2887 meters. Site 485 - 22°44.9'N, 107°54.2'W; water depth, 2981 meters. The nearly 200 taxa I identified are listed alphabetically in the systematic reference list. The only reliable radiolarian biostratigraphic datum determined for the Quaternary sedimentary section is the highest occurrence of Axoprunum angelinum (Hays) at Sites 483, 484, and 485.

Due to its strong gradient in salinity and small temperature gradient the Mediterranean provides an ideal setting to study the impact of salinity on the incorporation of Mg into foraminiferal tests. We have investigated tests of Globorotalia inflata and Globigerina bulloides in plankton tow and core top samples from the Western Mediterranean using ICP-OES for bulk analyses and LA-ICP-MS for analyses of individual chambers in single specimens. Mg/Ca observed in G. inflata are consistent with existing calibrations, whereas G. bulloides had significantly higher Mg/Ca than predicted, particularly in core top samples from the easterly stations. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Laser Ablation ICP-MS revealed secondary overgrowths on some tests, which could explain the observed high core top Mg/Ca. We suggest that the Mediterranean intermediate and deep water supersaturated with respect to calcite cause these overgrowths and therefore increased bulk Mg/Ca. However, the different species are influenced by diagenesis to different degrees probably due to different test morphologies. Our results provide new perspectives on reported anomalously high Mg/Ca in sedimentary foraminifera and the applicability of the Mg/Ca paleothermometry in high salinity settings, by showing that (1) part of the signal is generated by precipitation of inorganic calcite on the foraminifer test due to increased calcite saturation state of the water and (2) species with high surface-to-volume shell surfaces are potentially more affected by secondary Mg-rich calcite encrustation.

Quantitative analysis of the late Cenozoic planktonic foraminiferal record from western Arabian Sea Site 722 revealed long term trends in the history of oceanography and climate. The modern western Arabian Sea surface waters are highly influenced by the monsoonal wind system. Summer upwelling, a result of southwestern winds, occurs along the coast of Somalia which produces distinct foraminiferal assemblages which are dominated by G. bulloides d'Orbigny. Consequently, variations in the distribution record of G. bulloides through time monitor the upwelling history associated with monsoonal activities. G. bulloides was a minor constituent of the foraminiferal fauna from the bottom of the hole (~14.5 Ma) until about 8.6 Ma ago. Then a rapid shift occurred toward higher values, up to 53% at 7.4 Ma. We interpret this rapid increase as a major step in the evolution of the monsoonal history. It is either the establishment of the system or at least a strong intensification of the monsoonal winds. At 5.5 Ma a significant drop of the G. bulloides relative abundance occurred which may indicate less upwelling, or alternatively other biota may have been favored in this period. From 5.0 Ma to Recent the G. bulloides record indicates that upwelling has occurred with minor fluctuations.

Upwelling occurs during the summer off the coast of Oman when the Asian monsoon produces strong southwest winds in the northern Arabian Sea. Ekman transport driven by the southwest monsoon winds upwells cool nutrient-rich waters along the coast which contrast with the warmer, less productive waters offshore. The spatial pattern of foraminifers in the sediments corresponds with the coastal environmental gradient. The upwelling species Globigerina bulloides dominates the sediment assemblage on the continental margin, while Globigerinita glutinata is more abundant offshore, creating a coastal gradient in fauna. We reconstructed the upwelling faunal gradient using high resolution oxygen isotope stratigraphy to correlate between Hole 723B on the Oman Margin, and a core from the Owen Ridge (RC2761), adjacent Site 722. A gradient similar in magnitude to the present, implying upwelling conditions similar to today existed during each interglacial time during the late Pleistocene interval from 0 to 300 k.y. The gradient was reduced or absent during glacial times implying diminshed southwest winds along the coast of Oman, not strong enough to produce an environmental gradient between the coast and offshore sites.

Sediment samples taken at close intervals across four major unconformities (middle Miocene/upper Miocene, lower Oligocene/upper Oligocene, lower Eocene/upper Eocene, lower Paleocene/upper Paleocene) at DSDP-IPOD Site 548, Goban Spur, reveal that coeval biostratigraphic gaps, sediment discontinuities, and seismic unconformities coincide with postulated low stands of sea level. Foraminiferal, lithic, and isotopic analyses demonstrate that environments began to shift prior to periods of marine erosion, and that sedimentation resumed in the form of turbidites derived from nearby upper-slope sources. The unconformities appear to have developed where a water-mass boundary intersected the continental slope, rhythmically crossing the drill site in concert with sea-level rise and fall.

The 136 m of calcareous oozes recovered in Hole 810C span the interval from upper Maastrichtian to middle Pleistocene. Three major hiatuses interrupt the sequence, with the topmost part of the Maastrichtian through the entire lower Paleocene, most of the lower Eocene, and the entire middle Eocene through most of the middle Miocene missing. Severe reworking and displacement affected the lower part of the succession from the Maastrichtian through the middle Miocene. Reworking and displacement gradually decreased in the upper portion. Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy enabled us to calibrate precisely the nearly complete magnetic reversal sequence of the Pliocene to the late Pleistocene. Two minor hiatuses detected by calcareous nannofossils across the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary and in the upper lower Pleistocene, respectively, resulted in shortening of the Olduvai and Jaramillo Events within the Matuyama Chron of the magnetic reversal sequence.

This report is an initial investigation of the planktonic foraminifers from the late Pliocene of Ocean Drilling Program Hole 1021C. Planktonic foraminifer assemblages show fair preservation in many samples. Assemblages are quantitatively dominated by Globigerina bulloides, dextral coiling Neogloboquadrina atlantica, and Globorotalia inflata and alternate between cool temperate and subarctic conditions.

This paper presents the planktonic foraminifer biostratigraphy of the sites drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 124 in the Celebes and Sulu Seas. It discusses preservation of foraminifers in pelagic sediments and in calcareous turbidites. In the Celebes Sea, pelagic carbonates are only found in the Eocene and Oligocene at Site 770. The faunas are poorly preserved due to severe dissolution and offer little biostratigraphic detail. In the Sulu Sea, pelagic carbonates are found in the upper Pliocene and Pleistocene at Sites 768 and 769 and throughout the recovered sequence at the shallower Site 771. The foraminifer faunas from these sediments allow for recognition of most standard zones. Variations in preservation of pelagic foraminifer faunas with time are due to changes in the depth of the lysocline. Shifts to improved preservation at Sites 768 and 769 are synchronous in the upper Pliocene/Pleistocene and may be related to global sea-level cycles. Planktonic foraminifers are also abundant in calcareous turbidites, which were deposited in both basins from the late Miocene onward. However, the turbidites are fine-grained, and biostratigraphic marker species are absent as a result of size-sorting during transport. In the Celebes Sea, shelf-derived material was a major component of early-late Miocene and middle Pliocene to early Pleistocene turbidites. Changes in the composition of the turbidites may correspond to global sea-level changes. In the Sulu Sea, a shift from shelf-derived material in Pliocene calcareous turbidites to a pelagic source in the Pleistocene may be related to subsidence of the Cagayan Ridge.
