To reconstruct the deep-water circulation for the last 3.5 Ma from deep-sea sediments of the eastern equatorial Atlantic, sea floor morphology, sub-bottom reflectors and the echo character have been mapped on the basis of 3.5 kHz records and sediment cores. Physical properties of sediments and synthetic seismograms derived from them enable us to decipher reflector sequences in environments of pelagic, current-resuspended and turbidity sedimentation. The individual reflectors originate from carbonate dissolution, hiatus, coarse sand layers and interferences. Those which are related to carbonate dissolution and hiatus provide evidence of water-mass boundaries by their distribution. Five phases of different deep-water circulation can be seen in the record of th elast 3.5 Ma, and these are related to climate history: 1. Between 3.7 Ma and 2.2 Ma a strong deep-water circulation indicates a northward flow of bottom water below 4200 m (AABW = Antarctic-Bottom Water) and a southward flow of deep-water above 4200 m (NADW = North-Atlantic Deep Water). 2. Between 1.6 and 1.4 Ma a southward flow of bottom water below 4500 m and a diminished southward flow above 4500 m can be detected. This water-mass geometry can be interpreted by an expansion of the NADW-masses and a displacement of the AABW-masses during the same time. 3. Since 1.4 Ma a northward flow of a bottom-water current developed again. This current flow created a leeside sediment ridge in the southern part of the Kane Gap and furrows in the northern part of it. 4. Between 400,000 and 200,000 yrs B. P. the oceanic and atmospheric circulation increased. The strengthened oceanic circulation caused and increase in carbonate dissolution, which is documented by a traceable reflector from 2800 m to 4500 m water depth. At the same time an increase of the atmospheric circulation caused a drastic rise in the pelagic sediment accumulation (> 100 %) through an intensification of upwelling. This runs parallel with a higher oceanic productivity in the northern equatorial divergence zone and an enhanced supply of fluvial and probably eolian sediments from the Senegal and Guinea. 5. Before 10,000 yrs B. P. an erosive northward flowing bottom-water current prevailed below 4500 m water depth. After 10,000 yrs B.P. the bottom-water flow was sluggish and non erosive.

Voluminous, subaerial magmatism resulted in the formation of extensive seaward-dipping reflector sequences (SDRS) along the Paleogene Southeast Greenland rifted margin. Drilling during Leg 163 recovered basalts from the SDRS at 66ºN (Site 988) and 63ºN (Sites 989 and 990). The basalt from Site 988 is light rare-earth-element (REE) enriched (La(n)/Yb(n) = 3.4), with epsilon-Nd(t=60) = 5.3, 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7034, and 206Pb/204Pb = 17.98. It is similar to tholeiites recovered from the Irminger Basin during Leg 49 and to light-REE-enriched tholeiites from Iceland. Drilling at Site 989, the innermost of the sites on the 63ºN transect, was proposed to extend recovery of the earliest part of the SDRS initiated during Leg 152. These basalts are, however, younger than those from Site 917 and are compositionally similar to basalts from the more seaward Sites 990 and 915. Many of the basalts from Sites 989 and 990 show evidence of contamination by continental crust (e.g., epsilon-Nd(t=60) extends down to -3.7, 206Pb/204Pb extends down to 15.1). We suggest that the contaminant is a mixture of Archean granulite and amphibolite and that the most contaminated basalts have assimilated ~5% of crust. Uncontaminated basalts are isotopically similar to basalts from Site 918, on the main body of the SDRS, and are light-REE depleted. Consistent with previous models of the development of this margin, we show that at the time of formation of the basalts from Sites 989 and 990 (1) melting was at relatively shallow levels in a fully-fledged rift zone; (2) fragments of continental crust were present in the lithosphere above the zones of melt generation; and (3) the sublithospheric mantle was dominated by a depleted Icelandic plume component.

In this paper, we present a rock magnetic data set produced for sediments from Hydrate Ridge recovered during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 204. Our data set is based on several artificially induced magnetic properties that can be used as a diagnostic for the presence of magnetic iron sulfides. The occurrence of magnetic iron sulfides within the gas hydrate stability zone in locations where gas hydrates are present seems to confirm previous interpretations linking formation of such minerals with generation of gas hydrate. Magnetic iron sulfides are also found at positions deeper than the gas hydrate stability zone. We suggest that these positions, which include intervals located just below the bottom-simulating reflector and also at deeper positions, may mark the former presence of gas hydrates that have been later dissociated as the gas hydrate stability zone moved upward through time. Detailed characterization of the magnetic iron sulfide mineralogy and comparison with sedimentological and geochemical data will be attempted for better determining the significance of magnetic iron sulfides in Hydrate Ridge sediments and their possible applications in the study of gas hydrates.

Deep-sea benthic foraminiferal faunas were studied from Sites 608 (depth 3534 m, 42°50'N, 23°05'W) and 610 (depth 2427 m, 53°13'N, 18°53'W). The sampling interval corresponded to 0.1 to 0.5 m.y. at Site 608 and in the sections of Site 610 from which core recovery was continuous. First and last appearances of benthic foraminiferal taxa are generally not coeval at the two sites, although the faunal patterns are similar and many species occur at both sites. Major periods of changes in the benthic faunas, as indicated by the numbers of first and last appearances and changes in relative abundances, occurred in the early Miocene (19.2-17 Ma), the middle Miocene (15.5-13.5 Ma), the late Miocene (7-5.5 Ma), and the Pliocene-Pleistocene (3.5-0.7 Ma). A period of minor changes in the middle to late Miocene (10-9 Ma) was recognized at Site 608 only. These periods of faunal changes can be correlated with periods of paleoceanographic changes: there was a period of sluggish circulation in the northeastern North Atlantic from 19.2 to 17 Ma, and the deep waters of the oceans probably cooled between 15.5 and 13.5 Ma, as indicated by an increase in delta18O values in benthic foraminiferal tests. The period between 10 and 9 Ma was probably characterized by relatively vigorous bottom-water circulation in the northeastern Atlantic, as indicated by the presence of a widespread reflector. The faunal change at 7 to 5.5 Ma corresponds in time with a worldwide change in delta13C values, and with the Messinian closing of the Mediterranean. The last and largest faunal changes correspond in time with the onset and intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation.
