Com o objetivo de testar a influência dos itens alimentares na coloração de acara-açus foi realizado o presente estudo que teve duas etapas. A primeira visou identificar os principais grupos alimentares da dieta de Astronotus ocellatus através da análise dos conteúdos estomacais e intestinais. A segunda visou comparar o efeito ocasionado pela administração de diferentes grupos da dieta, num ambiente artificial, sobre a coloração vermelha e a aquisição de massa corpórea dos indivíduos. Na primeira etapa as atividades foram desenvolvidas na Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Mamirauá (RDSM. Foram utilizados 216 indivíduos. Após fixação do trato digestivo de cada exemplar estes foram analisados qualitativamente, sobestereomicroscopia. Os itens alimentares encontrados nos referidos conteúdos foram classificados usando como critério de agrupamento grandes categorias tais como: moluscos, crustáceos, insetos, peixes e vegetais, além de material não identificado. O comprimento da primeira maturação sexual foi calculado. O regime do nível de água na RDSM durante o período do estudo foi obtido através de dados climáticos fornecidos pelo Instituto Mamirauá. O índice alimentar para cada item, foi calculado através do produto da freqüência de ocorrência relativa e do peso relativo de cada item e da somatória dos produtos para todos os itens identificados, os principais itens identificados foram peixes, insetos e moluscos. Foram capturados 20 indivíduos de Astronotus ocellatus, desta vez na Ilha do Marajó-PA, no mês de fevereiro/2006. Para o recebimento dos animais capturados foram preparados quinze (15) aquários na estação de piscicultura do Utinga (Belém, PA), com renovação de água constante. Com base nos resultados obtidos na primeira etapa e com base na literatura, elaborou-se o delineamento experimental com cinco tratamentos alimentares: T1 - Ração comercial (controle); T2 – Músculo de peixe; T3 – Moluscos, T4 - Insetos; T5 – Crustáceos. A análise do Índice de Intensidade de Coloração Vermelha foi baseada na metodologia de comparação computacional dos níveis de intensidade de cor proporcionada por software específico. Para efeito de comparação utilizou-se o Incremento da Coloração Vermelha do ocelo e da coloração lateral difusa. O tratamento realizado com a dieta de molusco apresentou o maior índice de intensidade de coloração vermelha no ocelo ao final de 20 dias. O tratamento realizado com a dieta de crustáceo gerou o maior índice de intensidade da coloração vermelha lateral difusa ao final de 20 dias. Os animais submetidos a quase todos os tratamentos apresentaram um aumento na massa corpórea ao longo de 40 dias de experimento, mas principalmente aqueles alimentados com moluscos demonstraram maior aquisição de biomassa.

Bio-molecular computing, 'computations performed by bio-molecules', is already challenging traditional approaches to computation both theoretically and technologically. Often placed within the wider context of ´bio-inspired' or 'natural' or even 'unconventional' computing, the study of natural and artificial molecular computations is adding to our understanding of biology, physical sciences and computer science well beyond the framework of existing design and implementation paradigms. In this introduction, We wish to outline the current scope of the field and assemble some basic arguments that, bio-molecular computation is of central importance to computer science, physical sciences and biology using HOL - Higher Order Logic. HOL is used as the computational tool in our R&D work. DNA was analyzed as a chemical computing engine, in our effort to develop novel formalisms to understand the molecular scale bio-chemical computing behavior using HOL. In our view, our focus is one of the pioneering efforts in this promising domain of nano-bio scale chemical information processing dynamics.

Throughout the genetic and physiological evolution of microorganisms, the microbiological sciences have been expanding the introduction of new therapeutic trials against microbial diseases. Special attention has been paid to the bacterium Helicobacter pylori, which induces gastric infections capable of causing damage, ranging from acute and chronic gastritis to the development of gastric cancer and death. The use of compounds with natural origins has gained popularity in scientific research focused on drug innovation against H. pylori because of their broad flexibility and low toxicity. The aim of this study was to describe the use of natural products against H. pylori in order to clarify important parameters for related fields. The study demonstrated the vast therapeutic possibilities for compounds originating from natural sources and revealed the need for innovations from future investigations to expand the therapeutic arsenal in the fight against H. pylori infection.

Accidents involving insects of the Hymenoptera order occur very often with both human beings and domestic pets and, in Brazil, they include aggravated cases with Africanized bees (Apis mellifera). The aggravation of deforestation and the lack of awareness regarding the subject are factors that contribute to the rise of the number of bees in the urban environment. This fact has been causing several derangements among the population because, once these insects are bothered, they become very aggressive. Considering the risks to population and the great amount of accidents that could be avoided, the development of researches with the goal of determining repelling substances is rather important. Therefore, this research evaluated the repelling action of essential natural oils obtained from rosemary (Rosmarinus oficinalis), lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), thyme (Thymus vulgaris), cedar (Juniperus virginiana), clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and mint (Mentha piperita) on A. mellifera Africanized worker bees in both semi-field and aggressiveness tests. Among the evaluated composites, the lemongrass, mint and clove essential natural oils presented a grater repelling effect, inhibiting the bees’ visitation to the managed feeders almost completely. The cedar essential natural oil was the least effective composite, and the rest of the tested oils presented satisfactory repellency, which became less effective over time, according to non-parametric Mann-Whitney test. However, further tests showed that only the lemongrass essential natural oil caused a less aggressive response from the bees, which can confirm the repelling power of this composite. This way, according to the results obtained through this research, lemongrass presents a greater potential to the development of effective repelling formulas against Africanized bees (Apis mellifera)

This paper aimed to study the treatability of rainwater collected in Rio Claro, SP, using natural coagulant tannin based. The tannin was compared with other too primary coagulants, namely ferric chloride and corn starch. Assays were performed in laboratory scale using equipment known as Jarteste and aimed to study the conditions most suitable dosage and coagulation pH. First tests were conducted to compare the coagulating and determination of the conditions to be used in the following tests, taking as a criterion the greatest efficiency for water treatment. Also performed were performed tests to construct the tannin coagulation diagram, using the optimal concentration found in the previous phase, by varying the dosage of coagulant and the pH of clotting in order to determine the isoefficiency regions for apparent color and turbidity. Finally, tests were performed cyclically filtration with filter paper. Preliminary tests indicated that the vegetable tannin concentration 3% (m/m) from the commercial solution was presented the best set of results (84.3% removal of apparent color and 82.51% removal of turbidity) compared to ferric chloride (66.25% removal efficiency and apparent color of turbidity 67.82%) and starch (73.68% removal efficiency apparent color and turbidity to 67.19%). The coagulation diagrams indicate that the best region to work with vegetable tannin 3% is where the coagulant dosage ranges from 15 mg/L to about 37.5 mg/L and coagulation pH ranging from about 6.5 to 7.5. The cyclic filtration showed to be not efficient for the best dosage of coagulant, due to the process of clogging of the filter paper, but proved to be efficient for other dosages.
