Remote Sensing (LIDAR) for Management of Highway Assets for Safety, 2003

The main objective of this study was to utilize light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology to obtain highway safety-related information. The safety needs of older drivers in terms of prolonged reaction times were taken into consideration. The tasks undertaken in this study were (1) identification of crashes that older drivers are more likely to be involved in, (2) identification of highway geometric features that are important in such crashes, (3) utilization of LIDAR data for obtaining information on the identified highway geometric features, and (4) assessment of the feasibility of using LIDAR data for such applications. A review of previous research indicated that older drivers have difficulty negotiating intersections, and it was recognized that intersection sight triangles were critical to safe intersection negotiation. LIDAR data were utilized to obtain information on potential sight distance obstructions at six selected intersections located on the Iowa Highway 1 corridor by conducting in-office line-of-sight analysis. Crash frequency, older driver involvement, and data availability were considerations in the selection of the six intersections. Results of the in-office analysis were then validated by visiting the intersections in the field. Sixty-six potential sight distance obstructions were identified by the line-of-sight analysis, out of which 62 (89.8%) were confirmed while four (5.8%) were not confirmed by the video. At least three (4.4%) potential sight distance obstructions were discovered in the video that were not detected by the line-of-sight analysis. The intersection with the highest crash frequency involving older drivers was correctly found to have obstructions located within the intersection sight triangles. Based on research results, it is concluded that LIDAR data can be utilized for identifying potential sight distance obstructions at intersections. The safety of older drivers can be enhanced by locating and rectifying intersections with obstructions in sight triangles.

Health consultation : Silver City petroleum release and municipal wells, Silver City, Mills County, Iowa (2005)

A resident of Silver City, Iowa requested the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) Hazardous Waste Site Health Assessment Program to evaluate the health impacts of a petroleum release in Silver City, Iowa, and the health impacts from the presence of chemicals detected in wells utilized as the source of municipal water for the citizens of Silver City and in the treated municipal water supply. This health consultation addresses exposure to residents of Silver City to organic chemicals within the groundwater and water supply and potential health effects at the levels of exposure. The information in this health consultation was current at the time of writing. Data that emerges later could alter this document’s conclusions and recommendations.

Indicadores geoespaciais para avaliação do impacto ambiental da suinocultura no licenciamento em âmbito municipal

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi propor e avaliar indicadores geoespaciais para analisar o impacto ambiental da atividade suinícola no licenciamento em âmbito municipal. O estudo foi conduzido no Município de Quinze de Novembro, RS. Foram avaliados indicadores ambientais em glebas agrícolas e bacias hidrográficas. Uma base de dados geoespacial foi criada, com uso de Sistemas de Informações Geográficas e de levantamento sistemático dos suinocultores e das glebas que recebem dejetos líquidos de suínos, o que incluiu propriedades suinícolas, uso atual das terras, tipos de solos, rede de drenagem e modelo digital do terreno. Os indicadores geoespaciais obtidos com as ferramentas de geoprocessamento foram: áreas da bacia com aplicação de dejetos suínos; áreas de preservação permanente existentes e a serem recuperadas; taxa de aplicação de dejetos; declividade; resistência à degradação; distância entre glebas com aplicação de dejetos e curso d'água; largura da faixa com potencial de amortecimento para dejetos entre glebas e curso d'água; distância entre instalação suinícola e curso d'água; conflito de instalações com área de preservação; e áreas que requerem recuperação ambiental. A interpretação desses indicadores possibilita avaliar os impactos ambientais potenciais da atividade suinícola nas propriedades rurais e nas bacias em que estão localizadas, o que permite identificar os locais de maior risco e subsidiar o licenciamento ambiental da atividade.

El treball es centra principalment en el disseny de la instal·lació geotèrmica exterior i del terra radiant de l'interior. El disseny es basa en aconseguir el confort de calefacció i s'aprofita el fet de que s'utilitza un sistema reversible per aportar el màxim confort durant l'èpocade refrigeració. Es realitza un estudi de les possibles alternatives per a la instal·lació, també s'observaran els aparells i accessoris escollits per a la implantació de la instal·lació.
