The lexical-semantic and syntactic abilities of a group of individuals with chronic nonthalamic subcortical (NS) lesions following stroke (n = 6) were investigated using the Western Aphasia Battery (WAB) picture description task [Kertesz, A. (1982). The Western aphasia battery. New York: Grune and Stratton] and compared with those of a group of subjects with Huntington's Disease (HD) (n = 6) and a nonneurologically impaired control group (n = 6) matched for age, sex, and educational level. The performance of the NS and HD subjects did not differ significantly from the well controls on measures of lexical-semantic abilities. NS and HD subjects provided as much information about the target picture as control subjects, but produced fewer action information units. Analysis of syntactic abilities revealed that the HD subjects produced significantly more grammatical errors than both the NS and control subjects and that the NS group performed in a similar manner to control subjects. These findings are considered in terms of current theories of subcortical language function Learning outcomes: As a result of this activity, the reader will obtain information about the debate surrounding the role of subcortical language mechanisms and be provided with new information on the comparative picture description abilities of individuals with known vascular and degenerative subcortical pathologies and healthy control participants. Electrolyte Transport in the Mammalian Colon: Mechanisms and Implications for Disease. Physiol. Rev. 82: 245-289, 2002.The colonic epithelium has both absorptive and secretory functions. The transport is characterized by a net absorption of NaCl, short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), and water, allowing extrusion of a feces with very little water and salt content. In addition, the epithelium does secret mucus, bicarbonate, and KCl. Polarized distribution of transport proteins in both luminal and basolateral membranes enables efficient salt transport in both directions, probably even within an individual cell. Meanwhile, most of the participating transport proteins have been identified, and their function has been studied in detail. Absorption of NaCl is a rather steady process that is controlled by steroid hormones regulating the expression of epithelial Na+ channels (ENaC), the Na+-K+-ATPase, and additional modulating factors such as the serum- and glucocorticoid-regulated kinase SGK. Acute regulation of absorption may occur by a Na+ feedback mechanism and the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). Cl- secretion in the adult colon relies on luminal CFTR, which is a cAMP-regulated Cl- channel and a regulator of other transport proteins. As a consequence, mutations in CFTR result in both impaired Cl- secretion and enhanced Na+ absorption in the colon of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Ca2+- and cAMP-activated basolateral K+ channels support both secretion and absorption of electrolytes and work in concert with additional regulatory proteins, which determine their functional and pharmacological profile. Knowledge of the mechanisms of electrolyte transport in the colon enables the development of new strategies for the treatment of CF and secretory diarrhea. It will also lead to a better understanding of the pathophysiological events during inflammatory bowel disease and development of colonic carcinoma.

The thrust of this report concerns spline theory and some of the background to spline theory and follows the development in (Wahba, 1991). We also review methods for determining hyper-parameters, such as the smoothing parameter, by Generalised Cross Validation. Splines have an advantage over Gaussian Process based procedures in that we can readily impose atmospherically sensible smoothness constraints and maintain computational efficiency. Vector splines enable us to penalise gradients of vorticity and divergence in wind fields. Two similar techniques are summarised and improvements based on robust error functions and restricted numbers of basis functions given. A final, brief discussion of the application of vector splines to the problem of scatterometer data assimilation highlights the problems of ambiguous solutions.

β-Amyloid (Aβ) deposition in regions of the temporal lobe in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) was compared with elderly, non-demented (ND) cases and with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The distribution, density and clustering patterns of diffuse, primitive and classic Aβ deposits were similar in 'pure' DLB and ND cases. The distribution of Aβ deposits and the densities of the diffuse and primitive deposits were similar in 'mixed' DLB/AD cases compared with AD. However, the density of the classic deposits was significantly lower in DLB/AD compared with AD. In addition, the primitive Aβ deposits occurred more often in small, regularly spaced clusters in the tissue and less often in a single large cluster in DLB/AD compared with 'pure' AD. These results suggest that pure DLB and AD are distinct disorders which can coexist in some patients. However, the Aβ pathology of DLB/AD cases is not identical to that observed in patients with AD alone. (C) 2000 S. Karger AG, Basel.

The Q parameter scales differently with the noise power for the signal-noise and the noise-noise beating terms in scalar and vector models. Some procedures for including noise in the scalar model largely under-estimate the Q parameter. We propose a simple method for including noise within a scalar model which will allow both the noise-noise dominated limit and the signal-noise dominated limit to be treated consistently. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Chronic exposure to aluminium (Al) remains a controversial possible cause of sporadic forms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This article reviews the evidence that once Al enters the brain and individual brain cells, it may be involved in three pathological processes: (1) the production of abnormal forms of tau leading to the formation of cellular neurofibrillary tangles and neuropil threads; (2) the processing of the amyloid precursor protein, resulting in the formation of beta-amyloid deposits and senile plaques, and (3) that via the mutual histocompatibility system, Al could be involved in the initiation of the immune response observed in AD patients. Despite recent evidence that Al could be involved in these processes, a conclusive case that exposure to Al initiates the primary pathological process in sporadic AD remains to be established.
