Transparent and translucent SnO2 aerogels with high specific surface area (>300m(2)/g) have been prepared by sol-gel process using tetra(n-butoxy)tin(IV) as a starting compound, and supercritical drying technique for solvent extraction. Light scattering measurements reveal that the polymeric cluster size distribution in sol system is gradually broadened during sol-gel transition. SEM images show that the aerogels are made up of the cottonlike oxide agglomerates with a large number of Pores. TEM images show that these aerogels seem to be self-similar at different magnifications. Their pore size distribution is pretty wide ranging, from mesopore to macropore especially for that of translucent aerogel. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Visual observations of tetrahydrofuran (THF) hydrate formation and dissociation processes with 5A-type zeolite powder were made at normal atmospheric conditions and below zero temperature by microscope. Results indicate that 5A-type zeolite powder can promote THF hydrate growth. At the same time, in the presence of 5A-type zeolite, agglomerated crystals and vein-like crystals of THF hydrate were also formed. SA-type zeolite powder increases the crystallization temperature and decreases the dissociation temperature. The particle size distribution of 5A-type zeolite powder influences THF hydrate formation and its dissociation characteristics significantly.

In this paper, low surface energy separators With undercut structures were fabricated through a full solution process, These low Surface energy separators are more suitable for application in inkjet printed passive-matrix displays of polymer light-emitting diodes. A patterned PS film was formed on the P4VP/photoresist film by microtransfer printing firstly. Patterned Au-coated Ni film was formed on the uncovered P4VP/photoresist film by electroless deposition. This metal film was used as mask to pattern the photoresist layer and form undercut structures with the patterned photoresist layer. The surface energy of the metal film also decreased dramatically from 84.6 mj/m(2) to 21.1 mJ/m(2) by modification of fluorinated mercaptan self-assemble monolayer on Au surface. The low surface energy separators were used to confine the flow of inkjet printed PFO solution and improve the patterning resolution of inkjet printing successfully. Separated PFO stripes, complement with the pattern of the separators, formed through inkjet printing.

A notable amount of PP beta-crystal (30%, by X-ray diffraction pattern) has been found in the PP samples as polymerized at normal static isothermal crystallization conditions without using any extra nucleating agents. Existence of catalyst residues in the sample is decisive, which slows down the crystallization rate facilitating the formation of beta-form spherulites. Comparatively, high molecular weight PP favors the formation of beta-form spherulites, deducting from no beta-crystal detected in the degraded samples. Finally, high isotacticity is also required for obtaining qualitative beta-form spherulites, demonstrated by increased beta-crystal content after removal of weak crystalline fraction of the sample.

The phase-transformation in sol-gel preparation of barium hexaferrite and the formation of barium hexaferrite doped with La3+ Were studied by chemical phase analysis, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectrometry analysis. The experimental results show that phase transformation reactions of FeCO3, Fe2O3 and BaFe2O4, barium hexaferrite and gamma-Fe2O3 take place in the heat treatment of gel. While the doping lanthanide ion replace barium ion, an equivalent quantity of Fe3+ are reduced to Fe2+ to maintain the charge equilibrium.

Based on the latest seismic and geological data, tectonic subsidence of three seismic lines in the deepwater area of Pearl River Mouth Basin (PRMB), the northern South China Sea (SCS), is calculated. The result shows that the rifting process of study area is different from the typical passive continental margin basin. Although the seafloor spreading of SCS initiated at 32 Ma, the tectonic subsidence rate does not decrease but increases instead, and then decreases at about 23 Ma, which indicates that the rifting continued after the onset of seafloor spreading until about 23 Ma. The formation thickness exhibits the same phenomenon, that is the syn-rift stage prolonged and the post-rift thermal subsidence delayed. The formation mechanisms are supposed to be three: (1) the lithospheric rigidity of the northern SCS is weak and its ductility is relatively strong, which delayed the strain relaxation resulting from the seafloor spreading; (2) the differential layered independent extension of the lithosphere may be one reason for the delay of post-rift stage; and (3) the southward transition of SCS spreading ridge during 24 to 21 Ma and the corresponding acceleration of seafloor spreading rate then triggered the initiation of large-scale thermal subsidence in the study area at about 23 Ma.

This dissertation investigates how the arts can be instrumental in the process of leadership formation and church transformation. By synthesizing results of an evaluation survey with a holistic-inductive design of inquiry, this dissertation demonstrates that the arts, as expressions of faith, can be transformative. By presenting the arts program at the Old West Church in Boston, which integrates arts as a medium for the expression of the Christian faith, this dissertation provides biblical, theological, and practical frameworks for reflecting on the transformative character of arts in the process of leadership formation and church transformation.

This paper describes an experimental investigation on the pressure dip phenomenon in a conical pile of granular solids. The roles of different deposition processes such as the pouring rate, pouring height and deposition jet size on the pressure dip formation were studied. Test results confirmed that the pressure dip is a robust phenomenon in a pile formed by top deposition. When the deposition jet radius is significantly smaller than the final pile radius (i.e. concentrated deposition), a dip developed in the centre as shown in previous studies. However, when the deposition jet radius is comparable to the final pile radius (i.e. diffuse deposition), the location of the dip moves towards the edge of deposition jet, with a local maximum pressure developed in the centre. For concentrated deposition, an increase in the pouring rate may enhance the depth of the dip and reduce its width, while an increase in the pouring height has only a negligible effect in the studied range. The results suggest the pressure dip is closely related to the initial location, intensity and form of downslope flows. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The mechanisms and kinetics studies of the formation of levoglucosan and formaldehyde from anhydroglucose radical have been carried out theoretically in this paper. The geometries and frequencies of all the stationary points are calculated at the B3LYP/6-31+G(D,P) level based on quantum mechanics, Six elementary reactions are found, and three global reactions are involved. The variational transition-state rate constants for the elementary reactions are calculated within 450-1500 K. The global rate constants for every pathway are evaluated from the sum of the individual elementary reaction rate constants. The first-order Arrhenius expressions for these six elementary reactions and the three pathways are suggested. By comparing with the experimental data, computational methods without tunneling correction give good description for Path1 (the formation of levoglucosan); while methods with tunneling correction (zero-curvature tunneling and small-curvature tunneling correction) give good results for Path2 (the first possibility for the formation of formaldehyde), all the test methods give similar results for Path3 (the second possibility for the formation of formaldehyde), all the modeling results for Path3 are in good agreement with the experimental data, verifying that it is the most possible way for the formation of formaldehyde during cellulose pyrolysis. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Polymer-stabilised liquid crystals are systems in which a small amount of monomer is dissolved within a liquid crystalline host, and then polymerised in situ to produce a network. The progress of the polymerisation, performed within electro-optic cells, was studied by establishing an analytical method novel to these systems. Samples were prepared by photopolymerisation of the monomer under well-defined reaction conditions; subsequent immersion in acetone caused the host and any unreacted monomer to dissolve. High performance liquid chromatography was used to separate and detect the various solutes in the resulting solutions, enabling the amount of unreacted monomer for a given set of conditions to be quantified. Longer irradiations cause a decrease in the proportion of unreacted monomer since more network is formed, while a more uniform LC director alignment (achieved by decreasing the sample thickness) or a higher level of order (achieved by decreasing the polymerisation temperature) promotes faster reactions.
