A lectin from the lichenized Basidiomycete Dictyonema glabratum

A lectin with hemagglutinating activity has been isolated from an aqueous extract of the symbiotic phenotype of Dictyonema glabratum and its cyanobacterial photobiont Scytonema sp. The purified lectin had a pi of 6.8 and its molecular mass was investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, gel filtration and SDS-PAGE, which indicated its native conformation as a dimer formed by two identical subunits of 16540 Da. The lectin is a glycoprotein with a low degree of glycosylation, containing galactose, xylose, glucose and mannose as neutral monosaccharides, in addition to glucosamine, which could indicate both N- and O-linkages. Amino acid analysis showed the predominance of nonpolar residues such as phenylalanine. Agglutination of human erythrocytes required divalent cations, which is affected by addition of EDTA. The lectin was more stable at 30 degreesC or less for at least 1 h and between pH 5.0 and 7.0. Among the various compounds tested for hemagglutination inhibition, N-acetylgalactosamine was the most active. The potential role of this lectin in recognition of the compatible cyanobacterial photobiont is discussed.

Effects of extracts from Brazilian sun-mushroom (Agaricus blazei) on the NK activity and lymphoproliferative responsiveness of Ehrlich tumor-bearing mice

Agaricus blazei Murrill, is an edible and medicinal mushroom which is popularly consumed due to its antitumoral properties. The immunomodulatory effects of methanol (METH), dichloromethane (DM) and n-hexane (HEX) extracts of this mushroom were evaluated in Ehrlich tumor-bearing mice. Subcutaneous inoculation of Ehrlich tumor cells inhibited the natural killer (NK) activity of spleen cells (specific lysis = 6.18 +/- 2.56%) compared with normal mice (17.59 +/- 7.77%). Treatment of tumor-bearing mice with the extracts for 10 days restored the natural killer activity against Yac-1 target cells and the best results were observed by treatment with the HEX extract (21.48 +/- 15.26%). Treatment of the animals with the HEX extract for 10 days was also able to stimulate the mitogen-induced lymphoproliferative activity of spleen cells. Thirty days after the treatment, all groups presented low proliferative activity. Specific antibody production was observed to be higher in the groups treated with the DM or METH extract 30 days after the treatment. Analysis of the 3 extracts by gas chromatography mass spectrum (GCMS) and magnetic nuclear resonance (MNR) showed that the HEX extract contains mainly sugar and fatty acids and that the METH extract also contains sugar and possibly amino acids. Supersymmetric 3-3-1 model

We build a complete supersymmetric version of a 3-3-1 gauge model using the superfield formalism. We point out that a discrete symmetry, similar to R symmetry in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, is possible to be defined in this model. Hence we have both R-conservina and R-violating possibilities. Analysis of the mass spectrum of the neutral real scalar fields show that in this model the lightest scalar Higgs boson has a mass upper limit, and at the tree level it is 124.5 GeV for a given illustrative set of parameters.

Search for flavor-changing-neutral-current D meson decays

We study the flavor-changing-neutral-current process c -> u mu(+)mu(-) using 1.3 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV recorded by the D0 detector operating at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We see clear indications of the charged-current mediated D(s)(+) and D(+)->phi pi(+)->mu(+)mu(-)pi(+) final states with significance greater than 4 standard deviations above background for the D(+) state. We search for the continuum neutral-current decay of D(+)->pi(+)mu(+)mu(-) in the dimuon invariant mass spectrum away from the phi resonance. We see no evidence of signal above background and set a limit of B(D(+)->pi(+)mu(+)mu(-))< 3.9 x 10(-6) at the 90% C.L. This limit places the most stringent constraint on new phenomena in the c -> u mu(+)mu(-) transition.
