The flapping equation for a rotating rigid helicopter blade is typically derived by considering (1)small flap angle, (2) small induced angle of attack and (3) linear aerodynamics. However, the use of nonlinear aerodynamics such as dynamic stall can make the assumptions of small angles suspect as shown in this paper. A general equation describing helicopter blade flap dynamics for large flap angle and large induced inflow angle of attack is derived. A semi-empirical dynamic stall aerodynamics model (ONERA model) is used. Numerical simulations are performed by solving the nonlinear flapping ordinary differential equation for steady state conditions and the validity of the small angle approximations are examined. It is shown that the small flapping assumption, and to a lesser extent, the small induced angle ofattack assumption, can lead to inaccurate predictions of the blade flap response in certain flight conditions for some rotors when nonlinear aerodynamics is considered. In this paper a theory for two-person zero sum multicriterion differential games is presented. Various solution concepts based upon the notions of Pareto optimality (efficiency), security and equilibrium are defined. These are shown to have interesting applications in the formulation and analysis of two target or combat differential games. The methods for obtaining outcome regions in the state space, feedback strategies for the players and the mode of play has been discussed in the framework of bicriterion zero sum differential games. The treatment is conceptual rather than rigorous.

A scheme for the detection and isolation of actuator faults in linear systems is proposed. A bank of unknown input observers is constructed to generate residual signals which will deviate in characteristic ways in the presence of actuator faults. Residual signals are unaffected by the unknown inputs acting on the system and this decreases the false alarm and miss probabilities. The results are illustrated through a simulation study of actuator fault detection and isolation in a pilot plant doubleeffect evaporator.

We offer a technique, motivated by feedback control and specifically sliding mode control, for the simulation of differential-algebraic equations (DAEs) that describe common engineering systems such as constrained multibody mechanical structures and electric networks. Our algorithm exploits the basic results from sliding mode control theory to establish a simulation environment that then requires only the most primitive of numerical solvers. We circumvent the most important requisite for the conventionalsimulation of DAEs: the calculation of a set of consistent initial conditions. Our algorithm, which relies on the enforcement and occurrence of sliding mode, will ensure that the algebraic equation is satisfied by the dynamic system even for inconsistent initial conditions and for all time thereafter. In this paper we give a generalized predictor-corrector algorithm for solving ordinary differential equations with specified initial values. The method uses multiple correction steps which can be carried out in parallel with a prediction step. The proposed method gives a larger stability interval compared to the existing parallel predictor-corrector methods. A method has been suggested to implement the algorithm in multiple processor systems with efficient utilization of all the processors.

Several lines of evidence suggest that cancer progression is associated with up-regulation or reactivation of telomerase and the underlying mechanism remains an active area of research. The heterotrimeric MRN complex, consisting of Mre11, Rad50 and Nbs1, which is required for the repair of double-strand breaks, plays a key role in telomere length maintenance. In this study, we show significant differences in the levels of expression of MRN complex subunits among various cancer cells and somatic cells. Notably, siRNA-mediated depletion of any of the subunits of MRN complex led to complete ablation of other subunits of the complex. Treatment of leukemia and prostate cancer cells with etoposide lead to increased expression of MRN complex subunits, with concomitant decrease in the levels of telomerase activity, compared to breast cancer cells. These studies raise the possibility of developing anti-cancer drugs targeting MRN complex subunits to sensitize a subset of cancer cells to radio- and/or chemotherapy. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. The advent of large and fast digital computers and development of numerical techniques suited to these have made it possible to review the analysis of important fundamental and practical problems and phenomena of engineering which have remained intractable for a long time. The understanding of the load transfer between pin and plate is one such. Inspite of continuous attack on these problems for over half a century, classical solutions have remained limited in their approach and value to the understanding of the phenomena and the generation of design data. On the other hand, the finite element methods that have grown simultaneously with the recent development of computers have been helpful in analysing specific problems and answering specific questions, but are yet to be harnessed to assist in obtaining with economy a clearer understanding of the phenomena of partial separation and contact, friction and slip, and fretting and fatigue in pin joints. Against this background, it is useful to explore the application of the classical simple differential equation methods with the aid of computer power to open up this very important area. In this paper we describe some of the recent and current work at the Indian Institute of Science in this last direction.

The current density-voltage (J-V) characteristics of poly(3-methylthiophene) devices show a negative differential resistance (NDR) at room temperature with a large peak to valley current ratio (similar to 507). This NDR can be tuned by two orders of magnitude by controlling the carrier density due to the variation of the space-charge region in the device. The temperature and scan rate dependent J-V measurements infer that the NDR is mainly driven by the trapping and de-trapping of carriers. The photo-generation of carriers is observed to reduce the NDR effect.

The hazards associated with major accident hazard (MAN) industries are fire, explosion and toxic gas releases. Of these, toxic gas release is the worst as it has the potential to cause extensive fatalities. Qualitative and quantitative hazard analyses are essential for the identification and quantification of these hazards related to chemical industries. Fault tree analysis (FTA) is an established technique in hazard identification. This technique has the advantage of being both qualitative and quantitative, if the probabilities and frequencies of the basic events are known. This paper outlines the estimation of the probability of release of chlorine from storage and filling facility of chlor-alkali industry using FTA. An attempt has also been made to arrive at the probability of chlorine release using expert elicitation and proven fuzzy logic technique for Indian conditions. Sensitivity analysis has been done to evaluate the percentage contribution of each basic event that could lead to chlorine release. Two-dimensional fuzzy fault tree analysis (TDFFTA) has been proposed for balancing the hesitation factor involved in expert elicitation. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We prove the spectral invariance of SG pseudo-differential operators on L-P(R-n), 1 < p < infinity, by using the equivalence of ellipticity and Fredholmness of SG pseudo-differential operators on L-p(R-n), 1 < p < infinity. A key ingredient in the proof is the spectral invariance of SC pseudo-differential operators on L-2(R-n).

Negative differential resistance (NDR) in current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and apparent colossal electroresistance were observed in Gd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 single crystals at low temperatures. The continuous dc I-V measurements showed a marked thermal drift. In addition, temperature of the sample surface was found to be significantly higher than that of the base at high applied currents. Two different strategies namely estimation and diminution of the Joule heating (pulsed I-V measurements) were employed to investigate its role in the electric transport properties. Our experiments reveal that the NDR in Gd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 is a consequence of Joule heating rather than the melting of charge order. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3486221]

This paper proposes a differential evolution based method of improving the performance of conventional guidance laws at high heading errors, without resorting to techniques from optimal control theory, which are complicated and suffer from several limitations. The basic guidance law is augmented with a term that is a polynomial function of the heading error. The values of the coefficients of the polynomial are found by applying the differential evolution algorithm. The results are compared with the basic guidance law, and the all-aspect proportional navigation laws in the literature. A scheme for online implementation of the proposed law for application in practice is also given. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
