Mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common source of morbidity from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. With no overt lesions on structural MRI, diagnosis of chronic mild TBI in military veterans relies on obtaining an accurate history and assessment of behavioral symptoms that are also associated with frequent comorbid disorders, particularly posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Military veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan with mild TBI (n = 30) with comorbid PTSD and depression and non-TBI participants from primary (n = 42) and confirmatory (n = 28) control groups were assessed with high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI). White matter-specific registration followed by whole-brain voxelwise analysis of crossing fibers provided separate partial volume fractions reflecting the integrity of primary fibers and secondary (crossing) fibers. Loss of white matter integrity in primary fibers (P < 0.05; corrected) was associated with chronic mild TBI in a widely distributed pattern of major fiber bundles and smaller peripheral tracts including the corpus callosum (genu, body, and splenium), forceps minor, forceps major, superior and posterior corona radiata, internal capsule, superior longitudinal fasciculus, and others. Distributed loss of white matter integrity correlated with duration of loss of consciousness and most notably with "feeling dazed or confused," but not diagnosis of PTSD or depressive symptoms. This widespread spatial extent of white matter damage has typically been reported in moderate to severe TBI. The diffuse loss of white matter integrity appears consistent with systemic mechanisms of damage shared by blast- and impact-related mild TBI that involves a cascade of inflammatory and neurochemical events. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A new approach to the prediction of bend lifetime in pneumatic conveyors, subject to erosive wear is described. Mathematical modelling is exploited. Commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software is used for the prediction of air flow and particle tracks, and custom code for the modelling of bend erosion and lifetime prediction. The custom code uses a toroidal geometry, and employs a range of empirical data rather than trying to fit classical erosion models to a particular circumstance. The data used was obtained relatively quickly and easily from a gas-blast erosion tester. A full-scale pneumatic conveying rig was used to validate a sample of the bend lifetime predictions, and the results suggest accuracy of within ±65%, using calibration methods. Finally, the work is distilled into user-friendly interactive software that will make erosion lifetime predictions for a wide range of bends under varying conveying conditions. This could be a valuable tool for the pneumatic conveyor design or maintenance engineer.

Portland cement (PC) and blended cements containing pulverized fuel ash (PFA) or granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) were used to solidify/stabilize an electroplating sludge in this work. The acid neutralization capacity (ANC) of the hydrated pastes increased in the order of PC > PC/GGBS > PC/PFA. The GGBS or PFA replacement (80 wt%) reduced the ANC of the hydrated pastes by 30–50%. The ANC of the blended cement-solidified electroplating sludge (cement/sludge 1:2) was 20–30% higher than that of the hydrated blended cement pastes. Upon carbonation, there was little difference in the ANC of the three cement pastes, but the presence of electroplating sludge (cement/sludge 1:2) increased the ANC by 20%. Blended cements were more effective binders for immobilization of Ni, Cr and Cu, compared with PC, whereas Zn was encapsulated more effectively in the latter. Accelerated carbonation improved the immobilization of Cr, Cu and Zn, but not Ni. The geochemical code PHREEQC, with the edited database from EQ3/6 and HATCHES, was used to calculate the saturation index and solubility of likely heavy metal precipitates in cement-based solidification/stabilization systems. The release of heavy metals could be related to the disruption of cement matrices and the remarkable variation of solubility of heavy metal precipitates at different pH values.

The corrosion of steel reinforcement bars in reinforced concrete structures exposed to severe marine environments usually is attributed to the aggressive nature of chloride ions. In some cases in practice corrosion has been observed to commence already within a few years of exposure even with considerable concrete cover to the reinforcement and apparently high quality concretes. However, there are a number of other cases in practice for which corrosion initiation took much longer, even in cases with quite modest concrete cover and modest concrete quality. Many of these structures show satisfactory long-term structural performance, despite having high levels of localized chloride concentrations at the reinforcement. This disparity was noted already more than 50 years ago, but appears still not fully explained. This paper presents a systematic overview of cases reported in the engineering and corrosion literature and considers possible reasons for these differences. Consistent with observations by others, the data show that concretes made from blast furnace cements have better corrosion durability properties. The data also strongly suggest that concretes made with limestone or non-reactive dolomite aggregates or sufficiently high levels of other forms of calcium carbonates have favourable reinforcement corrosion properties. Both corrosion initiation and the onset of significant damage are delayed. Some possible reasons for this are explored briefly.

The underwater casting of relatively thin lifts of concrete in water requires the proportioning of highly flowable concrete that can resist water dilution and segregation and spread readily into place. An investigation was carried out to determine the effects of antiwashout admixture concentration, water-cementitious materials ratio, and binder composition on the washout resistance of highly flowable concrete. Two main types of antiwashout admixtures were used: 1) a powdered welan gum at concentrations of 0.07 and 0.15% (by mass of binder); and 2) a liquid-based cellulosic admixture with dosages up to 1.65 L/100 kg of binder. The water-cementitious materials ratios were set at 0.41 and 0.47, corresponding to high-quality underwater concrete. Four binder compositions were used: a standard Canadian Type 10 cement, the same cement with 10% silica fume replacement, the cement with 50% granulated blast-furnace slag replacement, and a ternary cement containing 6% silica fume and 20% Class F fly ash. The concentrations of anti-washout admixture have direct impact on washout resistance. For a given washout loss, greater slump flow consistency can be achieved with the increases in anti-washout admixture concentration and decreases in water-binder ratio. The washout mass loss can be reduced, for a given consistency

Concrete used for underwater repair is often proportioned to spread readily into place and self-consolidate, and to develop high resistance to segregation and water dilution. An investigation was carried out to determine the effect of the dosage of antiwashout admixture, water-cementitious materials ratio (w/cm), and binder composition on the relative residual strength of highly flowable underwater concrete. Two types of antiwashout admixtures were used: a powdered welan gum at 0.07 and 0.15% by mass of binder, and a liquid-based cellulosic admixture employed at a high dosage of 1 to 1.65 L/100 kg of cementitious materials. The w/cms were set at 0.41 and 0.47 to secure adequate performance of underwater concrete for construction and repair. Four binder compositions were used: a Canadian Type 10 cement; a cement with 10% silica fume replacement; a cement with 50% replacement of granulated blast-furnace slag; and a ternary binder containing 6% silica fume and 20% Class F fly ash. Test results indicate that for a given washout mass loss and slump flow consistency, greater relative residual strength can be secured when the dosage of antiwashout admixture is increased, the w/cm is reduced, and a binary binder with 10% silica fume substitution or the ternary binder are employed. Such mixtures can develop relative residual compressive strengths of 85 and 80%, compared to mixtures cast in air, when the value of washout loss is limited to 4 and 6% for mixtures with slump flow values of 450 and 550 mm, respectively.

An investigation of carbonation in mortars and methods of measuring the degree of carbonation and pH change is presented. The mortars were manufactured using ordinary portland cement, pulverized fuel ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag, metakaolin, and microsilica. The mortars were exposed to a carbon dioxide-rich environment 5% CO2 to accelerate carbonation. The resulting carbonation was measured using phenolphthalein indicator and thermogravimetric analysis. The pH of the pore fluid and a powdered sample, extracted from the mortar, was measured to give an accurate indication of the actual pH of the concrete. The pH of the extracted powder mortar sample was found to be similar to the pH of the pore fluid expressed from the mortars. The thermogravimetric analysis suggested two distinct regions of transport of CO2 within mortar, a surface region where convection was prevalent and a deeper region where diffusion was dominant. The use of microsilica has been shown to decrease the rate of carbonation, while pulverized fuel ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag have a detrimental effect on carbonation. Metakaolin has little effect on carbonation.

This paper considers a Q-ary orthogonal direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) system with high-rate space-time linear dispersion codes (LDCs) in time-varying Rayleigh fading multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channels. We propose a joint multiuser detection, LDC decoding, Q-ary demodulation, and channel-decoding algorithm and apply the turbo processing principle to improve system performance in an iterative fashion. The proposed iterative scheme demonstrates faster convergence and superior performance compared with the V-BLAST-based DS-CDMA system and is shown to approach the single-user performance bound. We also show that the CDMA system is able to exploit the time diversity offered by the LDCS in rapid-fading channels.

Available evidence shows that short amidated neuropeptides are widespread and have important functions within the nervous systems of all flatworms (phylum Platyhelminthes) examined, and could therefore represent a starting point for new lead drug compounds with which to combat parasitic helminth infections. However, only a handful of these peptides have been characterised, the rigorous exploration of the flatworm peptide signalling repertoire having been hindered by the dearth of flatworm genomic data. Through searches of both expressed sequence tags and genomic resources using the basic local alignment search tool (BLAST), we describe 96 neuropeptides on 60 precursors from 10 flatworm species. Most of these (51 predicted peptides on 14 precursors) are novel and are apparently restricted to flatworms; the remainder comprise nine recognised peptide families including FMRFamide-like (FLPs), neuropeptide F (NPF)-like, myomodulin-like, buccalin-like and neuropeptide FF (NPFF)-like peptides; notably, the latter have only previously been reported in vertebrates. Selected peptides were localised immunocytochemically to the Schistosoma mansoni nervous system. We also describe several novel flatworm NPFs with structural features characteristic of the vertebrate neuropeptide Y (NPY) superfamily, previously unreported characteristics which support the common ancestry of flatworm NPFs with the NPY-superfamily. Our dataset provides a springboard for investigation of the functional biology and therapeutic potential of neuropeptides in flatworms, simultaneously launching flatworm neurobiology into the post-genomic era. This study reports the identification of nematode neuropeptide-like protein (nlp) sequelogs from the GenBank expressed sequence tag (EST) database, using BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) search methodology. Search strings derived from peptides encoded by the 45 known Caenorhabatitis elegans nlp genes were used to identify more than 1000 ESTs encoding a total of 26 multi-species nlp sequelogs. The remaining 18 nlps (nlp-4, -16, -24 through -36, -39, -41 and -45) were identified only in C elegans, while the sole EST representative of nlp-23 was from Caenorhabditis remanei. Several ESTs encoding putative antibacterial peptides similar to those encoded by the C elegans genes nlp-24-33 were observed in several parasite species. A novel gene (nlp-46) was identified, encoding a single, amidated dodecapeptide (NIA[I/T]GR[G/A]DG[F/L]RPG) in eight species. Secretory signal peptides were identified in at least one species representing each nlp sequelog, confirming that all 46 nematode nlp genes encode secretory peptides. A random sub-set of C elegans NLPs was tested physiologically in Ascaris suum ovijector and body wall muscle bioassays. None of the peptides tested were able to modulate ovijector activity, while only three displayed measurable myoactivity on somatic body wall muscle. AFAAGWNRamide (from nlp-23) and AVNPFLDSIamide (nlp-3) both produced a relaxation of body wall muscle, while AIPFNGGMYamide (nlp-10) induced a transient contraction. Numerical analyses of nip-encoding ESTs demonstrate that nlp-3, -13, -14, -15 and -18 are amongst the most highly represented transcripts in the dataset. Using available bioinformatics resources, this study delineates the nlp complement of phylum Nematoda, providing a rich source of neuropeptide ligands for deorphanisation of nematode neuropeptide receptors. During the development of PCR primer sets for icrosatellite marker loci from enriched genomic libraries for three squat lobster species from Galatheidae (Decapoda: Anomura); Munida rugosa (Fabricius, 1775), M. sarsi (Huus, 1935), and Galathea strigosa (Linnaeus, 1761) (collectively known as squat lobsters), a number of unforeseen problems were encountered. These included PCR amplification failure, lack of amplification consistency, and the amplification of multiple fragments. Careful examination of microsatellite containing sequences revealed the existence of cryptic repeated elements on presumed unique flanking regions. BLAST analysis of these and other VNTR containing sequences (N 5 252) indicates that these cryptic elements can be grouped into families based upon sequence similarities. The unique features characterising these families suggest that different molecular mechanisms are involved. Of particular relevance is the association of microsatellites with mobile elements. This is the first reported observation of this phenomenon in crustaceans, and it also helps to explain why microsatellite primer development in galatheids has been relatively unsuccessful to date. We suggest a number of steps that can be used to identify similar problems in microsatellite marker development for other species, and also alternative approaches for both marker development and for the study of molecular evolution of species characterised by complex genome organisation. More specifically, we argue that new generation sequencing methodologies, which capitalise on parallel and multiplexed sequencing may pave the way forward for future crustacean research.

The development of artificial neural network (ANN) models to predict the rheological behavior of grouts is described is this paper and the sensitivity of such parameters to the variation in mixture ingredients is also evaluated. The input parameters of the neural network were the mixture ingredients influencing the rheological behavior of grouts, namely the cement content, fly ash, ground-granulated blast-furnace slag, limestone powder, silica fume, water-binder ratio (w/b), high-range water-reducing admixture, and viscosity-modifying agent (welan gum). The six outputs of the ANN models were the mini-slump, the apparent viscosity at low shear, and the yield stress and plastic viscosity values of the Bingham and modified Bingham models, respectively. The model is based on a multi-layer feed-forward neural network. The details of the proposed ANN with its architecture, training, and validation are presented in this paper. A database of 186 mixtures from eight different studies was developed to train and test the ANN model. The effectiveness of the trained ANN model is evaluated by comparing its responses with the experimental data that were used in the training process. The results show that the ANN model can accurately predict the mini-slump, the apparent viscosity at low shear, the yield stress, and the plastic viscosity values of the Bingham and modified Bingham models of the pseudo-plastic grouts used in the training process. The results can also predict these properties of new mixtures within the practical range of the input variables used in the training with an absolute error of 2%, 0.5%, 8%, 4%, 2%, and 1.6%, respectively. The sensitivity of the ANN model showed that the trend data obtained by the models were in good agreement with the actual experimental results, demonstrating the effect of mixture ingredients on fluidity and the rheological parameters with both the Bingham and modified Bingham models.

Various industrial by-products, such as fly ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag and silica fume, have been used in concrete to improve its properties. This also enables any environmental issues associated with their disposal. Another material that is available in large quantities and requiring alternative methods of disposal is the Bauxite Refinery Reside (BRR) from the Bayer process used to extract alumina from bauxite. As this is highly caustic and causes many health hazards, Virotec International Ltd. developed a patented technology to convert this into a material that can be used commercially, known as Bauxsol™, for various environmental remediation applications. This use is limited to small quantities of seawater-neutralised BRR and hence an investigation was carried out to establish its potential utilisation as a sand replacement material in concrete. In addition to fresh properties of concrete containing seawater-neutralised BRR up to 20% by mass of Portland cement, mechanical and durability properties were determined. These properties indicated that seawater-neutralised BRR can be used to replace natural sand up to 10% by mass of cement to improve the durability properties of concrete without detrimentally affecting their physical properties. Combining these beneficial effects with environmental remediation applications, it can be concluded that there are specific applications where concretes containing seawater-neutralised BRR could be used.

The diagnosis of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) currently relies primarily on the morphologic assessment of the patient's bone marrow and peripheral blood cells. Moreover, prognostic scoring systems rely on observer-dependent assessments of blast percentage and dysplasia. Gene expression profiling could enhance current diagnostic and prognostic systems by providing a set of standardized, objective gene signatures. Within the Microarray Innovations in LEukemia study, a diagnostic classification model was investigated to distinguish the distinct subclasses of pediatric and adult leukemia, as well as MDS. Overall, the accuracy of the diagnostic classification model for subtyping leukemia was approximately 93%, but this was not reflected for the MDS samples giving only approximately 50% accuracy. Discordant samples of MDS were classified either into acute myeloid leukemia (AML) or

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) may follow a JAK2-positive myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN), although the mechanisms of disease evolution, often involving loss of mutant JAK2, remain obscure. We studied 16 patients with JAK2-mutant (7 of 16) or JAK2 wild-type (9 of 16) AML after a JAK2-mutant MPN. Primary myelofibrosis or myelofibrotic transformation preceded all 7 JAK2-mutant but only 1 of 9 JAK2 wild-type AMLs (P = .001), implying that JAK2-mutant AML is preceded by mutation(s) that give rise to a "myelofibrosis" phenotype. Loss of the JAK2 mutation by mitotic recombination, gene conversion, or deletion was excluded in all wild-type AMLs. A search for additional mutations identified alterations of RUNX1, WT1, TP53, CBL, NRAS, and TET2, without significant differences between JAK2-mutant and wild-type leukemias. In 4 patients, mutations in TP53, CBL, or TET2 were present in JAK2 wild-type leukemic blasts but absent from the JAK2-mutant MPN. By contrast in a chronic-phase patient, clones harboring mutations in JAK2 or MPL represented the progeny of a shared TET2-mutant ancestral clone. These results indicate that different pathogenetic mechanisms underlie transformation to JAK2 wild-type and JAK2-mutant AML, show that TET2 mutations may be present in a clone distinct from that harboring a JAK2 mutation, and emphasize the clonal heterogeneity of the MPNs.
