Objectives: To characterize the interaction of 1-Ethyl-3-[3-dimethylaminopropyl] carbodiimide Hydrochloride (EDC) with dentin matrix and its effect on the resin-dentin bond. Methods: Changes to the stiffness of demineralized dentin fragments treated with EDC/N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) in different solutions were evaluated at different time points. The resistance against enzymatic degradation was indirectly evaluated by ultimate tensile strength (UTS) test of demineralized dentin treated or not with EDC/NHS and subjected to collagenase digestion. Short- and long-term evaluations of the strength of resin-dentin interfaces treated with EDC/NHS for 1 h were performed using microtensile bond strength (mu TBS) test. All data (MPa) were individually analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (alpha = 0.05). Results: The different exposure times significantly increased the stiffness of dentin (p < 0.0001, control-5.15 and EDC/NHS-29.50), while no differences were observed among the different solutions of EDC/NHS (p = 0.063). Collagenase challenge did not affect the UTS values of EDC/NHS group (6.08) (p > 0.05), while complete degradation was observed for the control group (p = 0.0008, control-20.84 and EDC/NHS-43.15). EDC/NHS treatment did not significantly increase resin-dentin mu TBS, but the values remained stable after 12 months water storage (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Biomimetic use of EDC/NHS to induce exogenous collagen cross-links resulted in increased mechanical properties and stability of dentin matrix and dentin-resin interfaces. Purpose: Considering the potential of the association between laser ablation and smaller scale hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings to create a stable and bioactive surface on titanium dental implants, the aim of the present study was to determine, by the removal torque test, the effects of a surface treatment created by laser-ablation (Nd:YAG) and, later, thin deposition of HA particles by a chemical process, compared to implants with only laser-ablation and implants with machined surfaces.Materials and Methods: Forty-eight rabbits received I implant by tibia of the following surfaces: machined surface (MS), laser-modified surface (LMS), and biomimetic hydroxiapatite coated surface (HA). After 4, 8, and 12 weeks of healing, the removal torque was measured by a torque gauge. The surfaces studied were analyzed according to their topography, chemical composition, and roughness. Results: Average removal torque in each period was 23.28, 24.0, and 33.85 Ncm to MS, 33.0, 39.87, and 54.57 Ncm to LMS, and 55.42, 63.71 and 64.0 Ncm to HA. The difference was statistically significant (P < .05) between the LMS-MS and HA-MS surfaces in all periods of evaluation, and between LMS-HA to 4 and 8 weeks of healing. The surface characterization showed a deep, rough, and regular topography provided by the laser conditioning, that was followed by the HA coating. Conclusions: Based on these results, it was possible to conclude that the implants with laser surface modification associated with HA biomimetic coating can shorten the implant healing period by the increase of bone implant interaction during the first 2 months after implant placement. Objectives: The lack of durability in resin-dentine bonds led to the use of chlorhexidine as MMP-inhibitor to prevent the degradation of hybrid layers. Biomimetic remineralisation is a concept-proven approach in preventing the degradation of resin-dentine bonds. The purpose of this study is to examine the integrity of aged resin-dentine interfaces created with a nanofiller-containing etch-and-rinse adhesive after the application of these two approaches. Methods: The more established MMP-inhibition approach was examined using a parallel in vivo and in vitro ageing design to facilitate comparison with the biomimetic remineralisation approach using an in vitro ageing design. Specimens bonded without chlorhexidine exhibited extensive degradation of the hybrid layer after 12 months of in vivo ageing. Results: Dissolution of nanofillers could be seen within a water-rich zone within the adhesive layer. Although specimens bonded with chlorhexidine exhibited intact hybrid layers, water-rich regions remained in those hybrid layers and degradation of nanofillers occurred within the adhesive layer. Specimens subjected to in vitro biomimetic remineralisation followed by in vitro ageing demonstrated intrafibrillar collagen remineralisation within hybrid layers and deposition of mineral nanocrystals in nanovoids within the adhesive. Conclusions: The impact was realized by understanding the lack of an inherent mechanism to remove water from resin-dentine interfaces as the critical barrier to progress in bonding with the etch-and-rinse technique. The experimental biomimetic remineralisation strategy offers a creative solution for incorporating a progressive hydration mechanism to achieve this goal, which warrants its translation into a clinically applicable technique.

The osseointegrated titanium implants are reliable and safe alternatives to treatments for long periods of time. For surface modification, thermal aspersion of TiO2 was used. The samples with and without TiO2 were treated with NaOH and SBF in order to obtain a layer of HA. Characterization was done by SEM and FTIR. The images of HA obtained by SEM show a uniform morphology and a porous structure with spherical particles. The IR spectra show that the surface of Ticp/ TiO2 is more favorable for the HA deposit, as can be seen by the increase of the crystalline structure and the very intense and defined bands of the OH group of HA that is verified about 3571 and 630 cm-1. Thus the Ticp/ TiO2 surface presents a satisfactory nucleation of HA when compared to Ticp.

Hydrated bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes obtained from cultures of Acetobacter xylinum were used in the preparation of silver nanoparticles containing cellulose membranes. In situ preparation of Ag nanoparticles was achieved from the hydrolytic decomposition of silver triethanolamine (TEA) complexes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns both lead to the observation of spherical metallic silver particles with mean diameter of 8 nm well adsorbed onto the BC fibriles. Mechanical alloying has been used successfully to produce nanocrystalline powders of hydroxyapatite (HA) using three different procedures. The milled HA was studied by X-ray diffraction, Infrared, Raman scattering spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). We obtained HA with different degrees of crystallinity and time of milling. The grain size analysis through SEM and XRD shows particles with dimensions of 36.9, 14.3 and 35.5 nm (for (R1), (R2) and (R3), respectively) forming bigger units with dimensions given by 117.2, 110.8 and 154.4 nm (for (R1), (R2) and (R3), respectively). The Energy-Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis showed that an atomic ratio of Ca/P= 1.67, 1.83 and 1.50 for reactions (R1), (R2) and (R3), respectively. These results suggest that the R1 nanocrystalline ceramic is closer to the expected value for the ratio Ca/P for hydroxyapatite, which is 513 congruent to 1.67. The bioactivity analysis shows that all the samples implanted into the rabbits can be considered biocompatible, since they had been considered not toxic, bad not caused inflammation and reject on the part of the organisms of the animals, during the period of implantation. The samples implanted in rabbits had presented new osseous tissue formation with the presence of osteoblasts cells. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An optimization study of the reaction conditions of Fe(TDCPP)Cl when it is used as catalyst in the hydroxylation of cyclohexane by iodosylbenzene (PhIO) has been carried out, It was found that Fe(TDCPP)Cl follows the classical PhIO mechanism described for Fe(TPP)Cl, which involves the monomeric active species Fe-IV(O)P-+. (I). In the optimized condition ([Fe(TDCPP) = 3.0 X 10(-4) mol l(-1) in 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE); ultrasound stirring at 0 degrees C; PhIO/FeP molar ratio = 100), this FeP led to a yield of cyclohexanol (C-ol) of 96% and a turnover number of 96, Therefore, Fe(TDCPP)Cl may be considered a good biomimetic model and a very stable, resistant and selective catalyst, which yields C-ol as the sole product. DCE showed to be a better solvent than dichloromethane (DCM), 1 DCE:1 MeOH mixture or acetonitrile (ACN). Since the Fe-IV(O)P-+. is capable of abstracting hydrogen atom from DCM, MeOH or ACN, the solvent competes with the substrate. Presence of O-2 lowers the yield of C-ol, as it can further oxidize this alcohol to carboxylic acid in the presence of radicals, Presence of H2O also causes a decrease in the yield, since it converts the active species I into Fe-IV(OH)P, which cannot oxidize cyclohexane. Addition of excess imidazole or OH- to the system results in a decrease in the yield of C-ol, due to the formation of the hexacoordinated complexes Fe(TDCPP)Im(2)(+) (low-spin, beta(2) = 2.5 X 10(8) mol(-2) l(2)) and Fe(TDCPP)(OH)(2)(-) (high-spin, beta(2) = 6.3 X 10(7) mol(-2) l(2)), the formation of both Fe(TDCPP)Im(2)(+) and Fe(TDCPP)(OH)(2)(-) complexes were confirmed by EPR studies. The catalytic activities of Fe(TDCPP)C and Fe(TFPP)Cl were compared, the unusually high yields of C-ol with Fe(TFPP)Cl obtained when ultrasound, DCM and O-2 atmosphere were used, suggest that a parallel mechanism involving the mu-oxo dimer form, O-2 and radicals may also be occurring with this FeP, besides the PhIO mechanism.

The commercial pure titanium (cp-Ti) is currently being used with great success in dental implants. In this work we investigate how the cp-Ti implants can be improved by modifying the metal surface morphology, on which a synthetic material with properties similar to that of the inorganic part of the bone, is deposited to facilitate the bone/implant bonding. This synthetic material is the hydroxyapatite, HA, a calcium-phosphate ceramic. The surface modification consists in the application of a titanium oxide (TiO2) layer, using the thermal aspersion - plasma spray technique, with posterior deposition of HA, using the biomimetic method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform (DRIFT) techniques have been used for characterizing phases, microstructures and morphologies of the coatings. The TiO2 deposit shows a mixture of anatase, rutilo and TiO2-x phases, and a porous and laminar morphology, which facilitate the HA deposition. After the thermal treatment, the previously amorphous structured HA coating, shows a porous homogeneous morphology with particle size of about 2-2.5 μm, with crystallinity and composition similar to that of the biological HA.
