The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of different disinfection solutions on flexural resistance of chemically-activated acrylic resin. Test pieces were made of clear acrylic resin using a rectangular mold and employing two techniques: wet polymerization under pressure (n = 20) and dry polymerization under pressure (n = 20). Test pieces were subdivided into four equal groups: distilled water (control), sodium bicarbonate, 1% sodium hypochlorite and effervescent ats. The 30-day cycling technique consisted of immersing the test pieces in 100 ml of solution for 10 min three times a day and placing them in closed containers containing artificial saliva at 37°C. Subsequently, the flexural resistance of samples was tested. Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with forces serving as the dependent variables and the polymerization technique and cleaning agents as independent variables. Post hoc multiple comparisons were performed using Tukey’s test. There was no statistically significant difference in the flexural strength between the two polymerization techniques. The greatest flexural strength was observed for the effervescent tablets group followed by the control and 1% sodium hypochlorite groups which were statistically similar. Thus, the sodium bicarbonate solution caused the lowest flexural resistance of the test pieces.

Apical surgeries are part of a segment of root canal treatment by which we can correct or eliminate iatrogenic deficiencies arising from conventional endodontic treatment. Currently no consensus among authors regarding to the factors linked to the surgery success as the execution of an apex resection followed by retropreparation and retrofilling. The apex resection performed 3mm from apical vertex allows the elimination of most apical ramifications, and it is a consensus part of the treatment. The preparation of cavities using ultrasonic tips has advantages over those made with drills such as better cleaning of the cavity, the possibility of lower cutting angle of the apical resection and deeper retropreparation. Another detail to consider is the type of tip, since the diamond tips in a more angulated inclination have higher cutting efficiency but causing increased formation of debris on the dentin walls. Finally, filling the cavity with an apical filling material allows proper sealing of the intracanal contents favoring apical healing.

Product miniaturization for applications in fields such as biotechnology, medical devices, aerospace, optics and communications has made the advancement of micromachining techniques essential. Machining of hard and brittle materials such as ceramics, glass and silicon is a formidable task. Rotary ultrasonic machining (RUM) is capable of machining these materials. RUM is a hybrid machining process which combines the mechanism of material removal of conventional grinding and ultrasonic machining. Downscaling of RUM for micro scale machining is essential to generate miniature features or parts from hard and brittle materials. The goal of this thesis is to conduct a feasibility study and to develop a knowledge base for micro rotary ultrasonic machining (MRUM). Positive outcome of the feasibility study led to a comprehensive investigation on the effect of process parameters. The effect of spindle speed, grit size, vibration amplitude, tool geometry, static load and coolant on the material removal rate (MRR) of MRUM was studied. In general, MRR was found to increase with increase in spindle speed, vibration amplitude and static load. MRR was also noted to depend upon the abrasive grit size and tool geometry. The behavior of the cutting forces was modeled using time series analysis. Being a vibration assisted machining process, heat generation in MRUM is low which is essential for bone machining. Capability of MRUM process for machining bone tissue was investigated. Finally, to estimate the MRR a predictive model was proposed. The experimental and the theoretical results exhibited a matching trend.

Mortar panels painted with three different white acrylic coatings were exposed to the environment in urban (So Paulo) and rural (Pirassununga) sites in Brazil for 7 years. After this time, all panels were almost equally discoloured, and paint detachment was observed to only a small degree. The biofilms were composed mainly of cyanobacteria and filamentous fungi, principal genera being Gloeocapsa and Chroococcidiopsis of the cyanobacteria, and Cladosporium and Alternaria of the fungi. Two of the three paints in Pirassununga became covered by a pink film that contained red-encapsulated Gloeocapsa and clay particles. The third, an 800% elastomeric matt formulation, became discoloured with a grey, only slightly pink, film, although the same cyanobacteria were present. The levels of paint detachments from all films in both locations were low, with rating range of 0-1 of a maximum 5 (100% detachment). After high-pressure water jetting, paint detachments increased at both locations, up to 2 in Pirassununga and 3 in So Paulo. Discoloration decreased; L*A*B* analysis of surface discoloration showed that Delta E (alteration in colour from the original paint film) changed from 28-39 before cleaning to 13-16 afterwards. The pink coloration was not entirely removed from Pirassununga samples, suggesting that cyanobacterial cells are difficult to detach, and microscopic analysis of the biofilms confirmed that Gloeocapsa was still present as the principal contaminant on all surfaces, with Chroococcidiopsis being present as the second most common. Almost no fungi were detected after water jet application.

The objective of this study is to investigate cardiac bioeffects resulting from ultrasonic stimulation using a specific set of acoustical parameters. Ten Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized and exposed to 1-MHz ultrasound pulses of 3-MPa peak rarefactional pressure and approximately 1% duty factor. The pulse repetition frequency started slightly above the heart rate and was decreased by 1 Hz every 10 s, for a total exposure duration of 30 s. The control group was composed of five rats. Two-way analysis of variance for repeated measures and Bonferroni post hoc tests were used to compare heart rate and ejection fraction, which was used as an index of myocardial contractility. It was demonstrated for the first time that transthoracic ultrasound has the potential to decrease the heart rate by similar to 20%. The negative chronotropic effect lasted for at least 15 min after ultrasound exposure and there was no apparent gross damage to the cardiac tissue.

In the clinical setting, the early detection of myocardial injury induced by doxorubicin (DXR) is still considered a challenge. To assess whether ultrasonic tissue characterization (UTC) can identify early DXR-related myocardial lesions and their correlation with collagen myocardial percentages, we studied 60 rats at basal status and prospectively after 2mg/Kg/week DXR endovenous infusion. Echocardiographic examinations were conducted at baseline and at 8,10,12,14 and 16 mg/Kg DXR cumulative dose. The left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF), shortening fraction (SF), and the UTC indices: corrected coefficient of integrated backscatter (IBS) (tissue IBS intensity/phantom IBS intensity) (CC-IBS) and the cyclic variation magnitude of this intensity curve (MCV) were measured. The variation of each parameter of study through DXR dose was expressed by the average and standard error at specific DXR dosages and those at baseline. The collagen percent (%) was calculated in six control group animals and 24 DXR group animals. CC-IBS increased (1.29 +/- 0.27 x 1.1 +/- 0.26-basal; p=0.005) and MCV decreased (9.1 +/- 2.8 x 11.02 +/- 2.6-basal; p=0.006) from 8 mg/Kg to 16mg/Kg DXR. LVEF presented only a slight but significant decrease (80.4 +/- 6.9% x 85.3 +/- 6.9%-basal, p=0.005) from 8 mg/Kg to 16 mg/Kg DXR. CC-IBS was 72.2% sensitive and 83.3% specific to detect collagen deposition of 4.24%(AUC=0.76). LVEF was not accurate to detect initial collagen deposition (AUC=0.54). In conclusion: UTC was able to early identify the DXR myocardial lesion when compared to LVEF, showing good accuracy to detect the initial collagen deposition in this experimental animal model.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of experimental toothpastes for removing denture biofilm by means of a randomized crossover trial. Thirty volunteers brushed their dentures using a brush and four pastes: (1) Corega refreshing mint (control), (2)0.2% chloramine T, (3)1.0% chloramine T, and (4) 0.01% fluorosurfactant. Each paste was used for 7 days, and participants were randomized to use them according to one of four sequences. Biofilm was disclosed (neutral red) after each period, photographed, and quantified by means of a software program. All experimental toothpastes were similar to the control in terms of posttreatment biofilm coverage. Int J Prosthodont 2012;25:157-159.

The determination of the complex reflection coefficient of ultrasonic shear-waves at the solid-liquid interface is a technique employed for the measurement of the viscoelastic properties of liquids. An interesting property of the measurement technique is the very small penetration depth of the shear-waves into the liquid sample, which permits measurements with liquid films of some micrometers thick. This property, along with the adhesion of oily substances to surfaces, can be used for the detection of oily contaminants in water. In this work, the employment of the ultrasonic shear-wave reflection technique to the detection of oily contaminants in water is proposed and the theoretical and experimental concepts involved are discussed. Preliminary experimental results show the measurement technique can detect SAE 40 automotive oil in water in volume proportions less than 0.5%.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) can be used to analyze the presence of debris and smear layer on the internal walls of root canal. This study evaluated the debris and smear removal in flattened root canals using SEM after use of different irrigant agitation protocols. Fifty mandibular incisors were distributed into five groups (n = 10) according to the irrigant agitation protocol used during chemomechanical preparation: conventional syringe irrigation with NaviTip needle (no activation), active scrubbing of irrigant with brush-covered NaviTip FX needle, manual dynamic irrigation, continuous passive ultrasonic irrigation, and apical negative pressure irrigation (EndoVac system). Canals were irrigated with 5 mL of 2.5% NaOCl at each change of instrument and received a final flush with 17% EDTA for 1 min. After instrumentation, the roots were split longitudinally and SEM micrographs at x 100 and x 1,000 were taken to evaluate the amount of debris and smear layer, respectively, in each third. Data were analyzed by KruskalWallis and Dunn's post-hoc tests (a = 5%). Manual dynamic activation left significantly (p < 0.05) more debris inside the canals than the other protocols, while ultrasonic irrigation and EndoVac were the most effective (p < 0.05) for debris removal. Regarding the removal of smear layer, there was no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) either among the irrigant agitation protocols or between the protocolcanal third interactions. Although none of the irrigant agitation protocols completely removed debris and smear layer from flattened root canals, the machine-assisted agitation systems (ultrasound and EndoVac) removed more debris than the manual techniques. Birds that remove ectoparasites and other food material from their hosts are iconic illustrations of mutualistic-commensalistic cleaning associations. To assess the complex pattern of food resource use embedded in cleaning interactions of an assemblage of birds and their herbivorous mammal hosts in open habitats in Brazil, we used a network approach that characterized their patterns of association. Cleaning interactions showed a distinctly nested pattern, related to the number of interactions of cleaners and hosts and to the range of food types that each host species provided. Hosts that provided a wide range of food types (flies, ticks, tissue and blood, and organic debris) were attended by more species of cleaners and formed the core of the web. On the other hand, core cleaner species did not exploit the full range of available food resources, but used a variety of host species to exploit these resources instead. The structure that we found indicates that cleaners rely on cleaning interactions to obtain food types that would not be available otherwise (e.g., blood-engorged ticks or horseflies, wounded tissue). Additionally, a nested organization for the cleaner bird mammalian herbivore association means that both generalist and selective species take part in the interactions and that partners of selective species form an ordered subset of the partners of generalist species. The availability of predictable protein-rich food sources for birds provided by cleaning interactions may lead to an evolutionary pathway favoring their increased use by birds that forage opportunistically. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of ultrasonic activation of calcium hydroxide (CH) pastes on pH and calcium release in simulated external root resorptions. Methods: Forty-six bovine incisors had their canals cleaned and instrumented, and defects were created in the external middle third of the roots, which were then used for the study. The teeth were externally made impermeable, except for the defected area, and divided into the following 4 groups containing 10 samples each according to the CH paste and the use or not of the ultrasonic activation: group 1: propylene glycol without ultrasonic activation, group 2: distilled water without ultrasonic activation, group 3: propylene glycol with ultrasonic activation, and group 4: distilled water with ultrasonic activation. After filling the canals with the paste, the teeth were restored and individually immersed into flasks with ultrapure water. The samples were placed into other flasks after 7, 15, and 30 days so that the water pH level could be measured by means of a pH meter. Calcium release was measured by means of an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Six teeth were used as controls. The results were statistically compared using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests (P < .05). Results: For all periods analyzed, the pH level was found to be higher when the CH paste was activated with ultrasound. Calcium release was significantly greater (P < .05) using ultrasonic activation after 7 and 30 days. Conclusions: The ultrasonic activation of CH pastes favored a higher pH level and calcium release in simulated external root resorptions. (J Endod 2012;38:834-837)

Abstract Background Due to the growing number of outbreaks of infection in hospital nurseries, it becomes essential to set up a sanitation program that indicates that the appropriate chemical agent was chosen for application in the most effective way. Method For the purpose of evaluating the efficacy of a chemical agent, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was reached by the classic method of successive broth dilutions. The reference bacteria utilized were Bacillus subtilis var. globigii ATCC 9372, Bacillus stearothermophilus ATCC 7953, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923. The strains of Enterobacter cloacae IAL 1976 (Adolfo Lutz Institute), Serratia marcescens IAL 1478 and Acinetobactev calcoaceticus IAL 124 (ATCC 19606), were isolated from material collected from babies involved in outbreaks of infection in hospital nurseries. Results The MIC intervals, which reduced bacteria populations over 08 log10, were: 59 to 156 mg/L of quaternarium ammonium compounds (QACs); 63 to 10000 mg/L of chlorhexidine digluconate; 1375 to 3250 mg/L of glutaraldehyde; 39 to 246 mg/L of formaldehyde; 43750 to 87500 mg/L of isopropanol or ethanol; 1250 to 6250 mg/L of iodine in polyvinyl-pyrolidone complexes, 150 to 4491 mg/L of chlorine-releasing-agents (CRAs); 469 to 2500 mg/L of hydrogen peroxide; and, 2310 to 18500 mg/L of peracetic acid. Conclusions Chlorhexidine showed non inhibitory activity over germinating spores. A. calcoaceticus, was observed to show resistance to the majority of the agents tested, followed by E. cloacae and S. marcescens.

Abstract Background To establish the correlation between quantitative analysis based on B-mode ultrasound images of vulnerable carotid plaque and histological examination of the surgically removed plaque, on the basis of a videodensitometric digital texture characterization. Methods Twenty-five patients (18 males, mean age 67 ± 6.9 years) admitted for carotid endarterectomy for extracranial high-grade internal carotid artery stenosis (≥ 70% luminal narrowing) underwent to quantitative ultrasonic tissue characterization of carotid plaque before surgery. A computer software (Carotid Plaque Analysis Software) was developed to perform the videodensitometric analysis. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to symptomatology (group I, 15 symptomatic patients; and group II, 10 patients asymptomatic). Tissue specimens were analysed for lipid, fibromuscular tissue and calcium. Results The first order statistic parameter mean gray level was able to distinguish the groups I and II (p = 0.04). The second order parameter energy also was able to distinguish the groups (p = 0,02). A histological correlation showed a tendency of mean gray level to have progressively greater values from specimens with < 50% to >75% of fibrosis. Conclusion Videodensitometric computer analysis of scan images may be used to identify vulnerable and potentially unstable lipid-rich carotid plaques, which are less echogenic in density than stable or asymptomatic, more densely fibrotic plaques.
