El empleo de los micropilotes en la ingeniería civil ha revolucionado las técnicas de estabilización de terraplenes a media ladera, ya que aunque los pilotes pueden ser la opción más económica, el uso de micropilotes permite llegar a sitios inaccesibles con menor coste de movimientos de tierras, realización de plataformas de trabajo de dimensiones reducidas, maquinaria necesaria es mucho más pequeña, liviana y versátil en su uso, incluyendo la posibilidad de situar la fabricación de morteros o lechadas a distancias de varias decenas de metros del elemento a ejecutar. Sin embargo, realizando una revisión de la documentación técnica que se tiene en el ámbito ingenieril, se comprobó que los sistemas de diseño de algunos casos (micropilotes en terraplenes a media ladera, micropilotes en pantallas verticales, micropilotes como “paraguas” en túneles, etc.) eran bastante deficientes o poco desarrollados. Premisa que permite concluir que el constructor ha ido por delante (como suele ocurrir en ingeniería geotécnica) del cálculo o de su análisis teórico. Del mismo modo se determinó que en su mayoría los micropilotes se utilizan en labores de recalce o como nueva solución de cimentación en condiciones de difícil acceso, casos en los que el diseño de los micropilotes viene definido por cargas axiales, de compresión o de tracción, consideraciones que se contemplan en reglamentaciones como la “Guía para el proyecto y la ejecución de micropilotes en obras de carretera” del Ministerio de Fomento. En los micropilotes utilizados para estabilizar terraplenes a media ladera y micropilotes actuando como muros pantalla, en los que éstos trabajan a esfuerzo cortante y flexión, no se dispone de sistemas de análisis fiables o no se introduce adecuadamente el problema de interacción terreno-micropilote. Además en muchos casos, los parámetros geotécnicos que se utilizan no tienen una base técnico-teórica adecuada por lo que los diseños pueden quedar excesivamente del lado de la seguridad, en la mayoría de los casos, o todo lo contrario. Uno de los objetivos principales de esta investigación es estudiar el comportamiento de los micropilotes que están sometidos a esfuerzos de flexión y cortante, además de otros objetivos de gran importancia que se describen en el apartado correspondiente de esta tesis. Cabe indicar que en este estudio no se ha incluido el caso de micropilotes quasi-horizontales trabajando a flexion (como los “paraguas” en túneles), por considerarse que estos tienen un comportamiento y un cálculo diferente, que está fuera del alcance de esta investigación. Se ha profundizado en el estudio del empleo de micropilotes en taludes, presentando casos reales de obras ejecutadas, datos estadísticos, problemas de diseño y ejecución, métodos de cálculo simplificados y modelación teórica en cada caso, efectuada mediante el empleo de elementos finitos con el Código Plaxis 2D. Para llevar a cabo los objetivos que se buscan con esta investigación, se ha iniciado con el desarrollo del “Estado del Arte” que ha permitido establecer tipología, aplicaciones, características y cálculo de los micropilotes que se emplean habitualmente. Seguidamente y a efectos de estudiar el problema dentro de un marco geotécnico real, se ha seleccionado una zona española de actuación, siendo ésta Andalucía, en la que se ha utilizado de manera muy importante la técnica de micropilotes sobre todo en problemas de estabilidad de terraplenes a media ladera. A partir de ahí, se ha realizado un estudio de las propiedades geotécnicas de los materiales (principalmente suelos y rocas muy blandas) que están presentes en esta zona geográfica, estudio que ha sido principalmente bibliográfico o a partir de la experiencia en la zona del Director de esta tesis. Del análisis realizado se han establecido ordenes de magnitud de los parámetros geotécnicos, principalmente la cohesión y el ángulo de rozamiento interno (además del módulo de deformación aparente o de un módulo de reacción lateral equivalente) para los diversos terrenos andaluces. Con el objeto de conocer el efecto de la ejecución de un micropilote en el terreno (volumen medio real del micropilote, una vez ejecutado; efecto de la presión aplicada en las propiedades del suelo circundante, etc.) se ha realizado una encuesta entre diversas empresas españolas especializadas en la técnica de los micropilotes, a efectos de controlar los volúmenes de inyección y las presiones aplicadas, en función de la deformabilidad del terreno circundante a dichos micropilotes, con lo que se ha logrado definir una rigidez a flexión equivalente de los mismos y la definición y características de una corona de terreno “mejorado” lograda mediante la introducción de la lechada y el efecto de la presión alrededor del micropilote. Con las premisas anteriores y a partir de los parámetros geotécnicos determinados para los terrenos andaluces, se ha procedido a estudiar la estabilidad de terraplenes apoyados sobre taludes a media ladera, mediante el uso de elementos finitos con el Código Plaxis 2D. En el capítulo 5. “Simulación del comportamiento de micropilotes estabilizando terraplenes”, se han desarrollado diversas simulaciones. Para empezar se simplificó el problema simulando casos similares a algunos reales en los que se conocía que los terraplenes habían llegado hasta su situación límite (de los que se disponía información de movimientos medidos con inclinómetros), a partir de ahí se inició la simulación de la inestabilidad para establecer el valor de los parámetros de resistencia al corte del terreno (mediante un análisis retrospectivo – back-análisis) comprobando a su vez que estos valores eran similares a los deducidos del estudio bibliográfico. Seguidamente se han introducido los micropilotes en el borde de la carretera y se ha analizado el comportamiento de éstos y del talud del terraplén (una vez construidos los micropilotes), con el objeto de establecer las bases para su diseño. De este modo y adoptando los distintos parámetros geotécnicos establecidos para los terrenos andaluces, se simularon tres casos reales (en Granada, Málaga y Ceuta), comparando los resultados de dichas simulaciones numéricas con los resultados de medidas reales de campo (desplazamientos del terreno, medidos con inclinómetros), obteniéndose una reproducción bastante acorde a los movimientos registrados. Con las primeras simulaciones se concluye que al instalar los micropilotes la zona más insegura de la ladera es la de aguas abajo. La superficie de rotura ya no afecta a la calzada que protegen los micropilotes. De ahí que se deduzca que esta solución sea válida y se haya aplicado masivamente en Andalucía. En esas condiciones, podría decirse que no se está simulando adecuadamente el trabajo de flexión de los micropilotes (en la superficie de rotura, ya que no les corta), aunque se utilicen elementos viga. Por esta razón se ha realizado otra simulación, basada en las siguientes hipótesis: − Se desprecia totalmente la masa potencialmente deslizante, es decir, la que está por delante de la fila exterior de micros. − La estratigrafía del terreno es similar a la considerada en las primeras simulaciones. − La barrera de micropilotes está constituida por dos elementos inclinados (uno hacia dentro del terraplén y otro hacia fuera), con inclinación 1(H):3(V). − Se puede introducir la rigidez del encepado. − Los micros están separados 0,556 m ó 1,00 m dentro de la misma alineación. − El empotramiento de los micropilotes en el sustrato resistente puede ser entre 1,5 y 7,0 m. Al “anular” el terreno que está por delante de los micropilotes, a lo largo del talud, estos elementos empiezan claramente a trabajar, pudiendo deducirse los esfuerzos de cortante y de flexión que puedan actuar sobre ellos (cota superior pero prácticamente muy cerca de la solución real). En esta nueva modelación se ha considerado tanto la rigidez equivalente (coeficiente ϴ) como la corona de terreno tratado concéntrico al micropilote. De acuerdo a esto último, y gracias a la comparación de estas modelaciones con valores reales de movimientos en laderas instrumentadas con problemas de estabilidad, se ha verificado que existe una similitud bastante importante entre los valores teóricos obtenidos y los medidos en campo, en relación al comportamiento de los micropilotes ejecutados en terraplenes a media ladera. Finalmente para completar el análisis de los micropilotes trabajando a flexión, se ha estudiado el caso de micropilotes dispuestos verticalmente, trabajando como pantallas discontinuas provistas de anclajes, aplicado a un caso real en la ciudad de Granada, en la obra “Hospital de Nuestra Señora de la Salud”. Para su análisis se utilizó el código numérico CYPE, basado en que la reacción del terreno se simula con muelles de rigidez Kh o “módulo de balasto” horizontal, introduciendo en la modelación como variables: a) Las diferentes medidas obtenidas en campo; b) El espesor de terreno cuaternario, que por lo que se pudo determinar, era variable, c) La rigidez y tensión inicial de los anclajes. d) La rigidez del terreno a través de valores relativos de Kh, recopilados en el estudio de los suelos de Andalucía, concretamente en la zona de Granada. Dicha pantalla se instrumentó con 4 inclinómetros (introducidos en los tubos de armadura de cuatro micropilotes), a efectos de controlar los desplazamientos horizontales del muro de contención durante las excavaciones pertinentes, a efectos de comprobar la seguridad del conjunto. A partir del modelo de cálculo desarrollado, se ha comprobado que el valor de Kh pierde importancia debido al gran número de niveles de anclajes, en lo concerniente a las deformaciones horizontales de la pantalla. Por otro lado, los momentos flectores son bastante sensibles a la distancia entre anclajes, al valor de la tensión inicial de los mismos y al valor de Kh. Dicho modelo también ha permitido reproducir de manera fiable los valores de desplazamientos medidos en campo y deducir los parámetros de deformabilidad del terreno, Kh, con valores del orden de la mitad de los medidos en el Metro Ligero de Granada, pero visiblemente superiores a los deducibles de ábacos que permiten obtener Kh para suelos granulares con poca cohesión (gravas y cuaternario superior de Sevilla) como es el caso del ábaco de Arozamena, debido, a nuestro juicio, a la cementación de los materiales presentes en Granada. En definitiva, de las anteriores deducciones se podría pensar en la optimización del diseño de los micropilotes en las obras que se prevean ejecutar en Granada, con similares características al caso de la pantalla vertical arriostrada mediante varios niveles de anclajes y en las que los materiales de emplazamiento tengan un comportamiento geotécnico similar a los estudiados, con el consiguiente ahorro económico. Con todo ello, se considera que se ha hecho una importante aportación para el diseño de futuras obras de micropilotes, trabajando a flexión y cortante, en obras de estabilización de laderas o de excavaciones. Using micropiles in civil engineering has transformed the techniques of stabilization of embankments on the natural or artificial slopes, because although the piles may be the cheapest option, the use of micropiles can reach inaccessible places with lower cost of earthworks, carrying out small work platforms. Machinery used is smaller, lightweight and versatile, including the possibility of manufacturing mortars or cement grouts over distances of several tens of meters of the element to build. However, making a review of the technical documentation available in the engineering field, it was found that systems designed in some cases (micropiles in embankments on the natural slopes, micropiles in vertical cut-off walls, micropiles like "umbrella" in tunnels, etc.) were quite poor or underdeveloped. Premise that concludes the builder has gone ahead (as usually happen in geotechnical engineering) of calculation or theoretical analysis. In the same way it was determined that most of the micropiles are used in underpinning works or as a new foundation solution in conditions of difficult access, in which case the design of micropiles is defined by axial, compressive or tensile loads, considered in regulations as the " Handbook for the design and execution of micropiles in road construction" of the Ministry of Development. The micropiles used to stabilize embankments on the slopes and micropiles act as retaining walls, where they work under shear stress and bending moment, there are not neither reliable systems analysis nor the problem of soil-micropile interaction are properly introduced. Moreover, in many cases, the geotechnical parameters used do not have a proper technical and theoretical basis for what designs may be excessively safe, or the opposite, in most cases. One of the main objectives of this research is to study the behavior of micro piles which are subjected to bending moment and shear stress, as well as other important objectives described in the pertinent section of this thesis. It should be noted that this study has not included the case of quasi-horizontal micropiles working bending moment (as the "umbrella" in tunnels), because it is considered they have a different behavior and calculation, which is outside the scope of this research. It has gone in depth in the study of using micropiles on slopes, presenting real cases of works made, statistics, problems of design and implementation, simplified calculation methods and theoretical modeling in each case, carried out by using FEM (Finite Element Method) Code Plaxis 2D. To accomplish the objectives of this research, It has been started with the development of the "state of the art" which stipulate types, applications, characteristics and calculation of micropiles that are commonly used. In order to study the problem in a real geotechnical field, it has been selected a Spanish zone of action, this being Andalusia, in which it has been used in a very important way, the technique of micropiles especially in embankments stability on natural slopes. From there, it has made a study of the geotechnical properties of the materials (mainly very soft soils and rocks) that are found in this geographical area, which has been mainly a bibliographic study or from the experience in the area of the Director of this thesis. It has been set orders of magnitude of the geotechnical parameters from analyzing made, especially the cohesion and angle of internal friction (also apparent deformation module or a side reaction module equivalent) for various typical Andalusian ground. In order to determine the effect of the implementation of a micropile on the ground (real average volume of micropile once carried out, effect of the pressure applied on the properties of the surrounding soil, etc.) it has conducted a survey among various skilled companies in the technique of micropiles, in order to control injection volumes and pressures applied, depending on the deformability of surrounding terrain such micropiles, whereby it has been possible to define a bending stiffness and the definition and characteristics of a crown land "improved" achieved by introducing the slurry and the effect of the pressure around the micropile. With the previous premises and from the geotechnical parameters determined for the Andalusian terrain, we proceeded to study the stability of embankments resting on batters on the slope, using FEM Code Plaxis 2D. In the fifth chapter "Simulation of the behavior of micropiles stabilizing embankments", there were several different numerical simulations. To begin the problem was simplified simulating similar to some real in which it was known that the embankments had reached their limit situation (for which information of movements measured with inclinometers were available), from there the simulation of instability is initiated to set the value of the shear strength parameters of the ground (by a retrospective analysis or back-analysis) checking these values were similar to those deduced from the bibliographical study Then micropiles have been introduced along the roadside and its behavior was analyzed as well as the slope of embankment (once micropiles were built ), in order to establish the basis for its design. In this way and taking the different geotechnical parameters for the Andalusian terrain, three real cases (in Granada, Malaga and Ceuta) were simulated by comparing the results of these numerical simulations with the results of real field measurements (ground displacements measured with inclinometers), getting quite consistent information according to registered movements. After the first simulations it has been concluded that after installing the micropiles the most insecure area of the natural slope is the downstream. The failure surface no longer affects the road that protects micropiles. Hence it is inferred that this solution is acceptable and it has been massively applied in Andalusia. Under these conditions, one could say that it is not working properly simulating the bending moment of micropiles (on the failure surface, and that does not cut them), although beam elements are used. Therefore another simulation was performed based on the following hypotheses: − The potentially sliding mass is totally neglected, that is, which is ahead of the outer row of micropiles. − Stratigraphy field is similar to the one considered in the first simulations. − Micropiles barrier is constituted by two inclined elements (one inward and one fill out) with inclination 1 (H): 3 (V). − You can enter the stiffness of the pile cap. − The microlies lines are separated 0.556 m or 1.00 m in the same alignment. − The embedding of the micropiles in the tough substrate can be between 1.5 and 7.0 m. To "annul" the ground that is in front of the micro piles, along the slope, these elements clearly start working, efforts can be inferred shear stress and bending moment which may affect them (upper bound but pretty close to the real) solution. In this new modeling it has been considered both equivalent stiffness coefficient (θ) as the treated soil crown concentric to the micropile. According to the latter, and by comparing these values with real modeling movements on field slopes instrumented with stability problems, it was verified that there is quite a significant similarity between the obtained theoretical values and the measured field in relation to the behavior of micropiles executed in embankments along the natural slope. Finally to complete the analysis of micropiles working in bending conditions, we have studied the case of micropiles arranged vertically, working as discontinued cut-off walls including anchors, applied to a real case in the city of Granada, in the play "Hospital of Our Lady of the Health ". CYPE numeric code, based on the reaction of the ground is simulated spring stiffness Kh or "subgrade" horizontal, introduced in modeling was used as variables for analysis: a) The different measurements obtained in field; b) The thickness of quaternary ground, so that could be determined, was variable, c) The stiffness and the prestress of the anchors. d) The stiffness of the ground through relative values of Kh, collected in the study of soils in Andalusia, particularly in the area of Granada. (previously study of the Andalusia soils) This cut-off wall was implemented with 4 inclinometers (introduced in armor tubes four micropiles) in order to control the horizontal displacements of the retaining wall during the relevant excavations, in order to ensure the safety of the whole. From the developed model calculation, it was found that the value of Kh becomes less important because a large number of anchors levels, with regard to the horizontal deformation of the cut-off wall. On the other hand, the bending moments are quite sensitive to the distance between anchors, the initial voltage value thereof and the value of Kh. This model has also been reproduced reliably displacement values measured in the field and deduce parameters terrain deformability, Kh, with values around half the measured Light Rail in Granada, but visibly higher than deductible of abacuses which can obtain Kh for granular soils with low cohesion (upper Quaternary gravels and Sevilla) such as Abacus Arozamena, because, in our view, to cementing materials in Granada. In short, previous deductions you might think on optimizing the design of micropiles in the works that are expected to perform in Granada, with similar characteristics to the case of the vertical cut-off wall braced through several levels of anchors and in which materials location have a geotechnical behavior similar to those studied, with the consequent economic savings. With all this, it is considered that a significant contribution have been made for the design of future works of micropiles, bending moment and shear stress working in slope stabilization works or excavations.

No hay duda de que el ferrocarril es uno de los símbolos del avance tecnológico y social de la humanidad, y su imparable avance desde el primer tercio del Siglo XIX así lo atestigua. No obstante, a lo largo de gran parte de su historia se ha mostrado algo renuente a abrazar ciertas tecnologías, lo que le ha causado ser tachado de conservador. Sin embargo, en los últimos años, coincidiendo con el auge masivo de los trenes de alta velocidad, los metropolitanos y los tranvías, muchas tecnologías han ido penetrando en el mundo del ferrocarril. La que hoy nos ocupa es una de las que mayor valor añadido le ha proporcionado (y que probablemente le proporcionará también en el futuro): las comunicaciones móviles. Actualmente el uso de este tipo de tecnologías en el entorno ferroviario puede calificarse como de inicial o, por seguir la nomenclatura de las comunicaciones móviles públicas, de segunda generación. El GSM-R en las líneas de alta velocidad es un caso (aunque de éxito al fin y al cabo) que define perfectamente el estado del arte de las comunicaciones móviles en este entorno, ya que proporcionó un gran valor añadido a costa de un gran esfuerzo de estandarización; ha supuesto un importante salto adelante en el campo de la fiabilidad de este tipo de sistemas, aunque tiene unas grandes limitaciones de capacidad y graves problemas de escalabilidad. Todo hace pensar que en 2025 el sustituto de GSM-R deberá estar en el mercado. En cualquier caso, se debería abandonar la filosofía de crear productos de nicho, que son extraordinariamente caros, y abrazar las filosofías abiertas de las redes de comunicaciones públicas. Aquí es donde LTE, la última gran estrella de esta familia de estándares, puede aportar mucho valor. La idea subyacente detrás de esta Tesis es que LTE puede ser una tecnología que aporte gran valor a las necesidades actuales (y probablemente futuras) del sector del ferrocarril, no solamente en las líneas y trenes de alta velocidad, sino en las denominadas líneas convencionales y en los metros y tranvías. Dado que es un campo aún a día de hoy que dista bastante de estar completamente estudiado, se ha explorado la problemática de la propagación electromagnética en los diferentes entornos ferroviarios, como pueden ser los túneles de metro y la influencia de las estructuras de los trenes. En este sentido, se ha medido de forma bastante exhaustiva en ambos entornos. Por otro lado, dado que los sistemas multiantena son uno de los pilares fundamentales de los modernos sistemas de comunicaciones, se ha verificado de forma experimental la viabilidad de esta tecnología a la hora de implementar un sistema de comunicaciones trentierra en un túnel. Asimismo, de resultas de estas medidas, se ha comprobado la existencia de ciertos fenómenos físicos que pueden suponer una merma en la eficiencia de este tipo de sistemas. En tercer lugar, y dado que uno de los grandes desafíos de las líneas de alta velocidad está provocado por la gran celeridad a la que se desplazan los trenes, se ha explorado la influencia de este parámetro en la eficiencia global de una red completa de comunicaciones móviles. Por supuesto, se ha hecho especial hincapié en los aspectos relacionados con la gestión de la movilidad (traspasos o handovers Por último, a modo de cierre de la Tesis, se ha tratado de identificar los futuros servicios de comunicaciones que aportarán más valor a las explotaciones ferroviarias, así como los requisitos que supondrán para las redes de comunicaciones móviles. Para los casos antes enunciados (propagación, sistemas multiantena, movilidad y desafíos futuros) se proporcionan las contribuciones ya publicadas en revistas y congresos internacionales, así como las que están enviadas para su revisión. ABSTRACT There is almost no doubt that railways are one of the symbols of the technological and social progress of humanity. However, most of the time railways have been somewhat reluctant to embrace new technologies, gaining some reputation of being conservative. But in the last years, together with the massive boom of high speed lines, subways and trams all over the world, some technologies have broken through these conservative resistance. The one which concerns us now is one of the most value-added (both today and in the future): mobile communications. The state-of-the-art of these technologies in the railway field could be called as incipient, or (following the mobile communications’ notation) ‘second generation’. GSM-R, the best example of mobile communications in railways is a success story that shows perfectly the state-of-the-art of this field: it provided a noticeable mark-up but also required a great standardization effort; it also meant a huge step forward in the reliability of these systems but it also needs to face some scalability issues and some capacity problems. It looks more than feasible that in 2025 the alternative to GSM-R should be already available. Anyway, the vision here should be forgetting about expensive niche products, and embracing open standards like public mobile communications do. The main idea behind this Thesis is that LTE could be a technology that provides a lot of added value to the necessities of the railways of today and the future. And not only to highspeed lines, but also to the so-called conventional rail, subways and tramways. Due to the fact that even today, propagation in tunnels and influence of car bodies is far from being full-studied, we measured in a very exhaustive way the EM propagation in these two environments. Also, multiantenna systems are one of the basic foundations of the modern communications systems, so we experimentally verified the feasibility of using such a system in a train-towayside in a tunnel. Moreover, from the measurements carried out we proved the existence of some physical phenomena that could imply a decrease in the performance of these multiantenna systems. In third place, we have explored the influence of high-speed in the whole performance of the network, from the mobility management point-of-view. This high-speed movement is one of the most relevant challenges for the mobile communications networks. The emphasis was placed on the mobility aspects of the radio resource management. Finally, the Thesis closure is an identification of the future communication services that could provide a bigger addition of value to railways, and also the requirements that imply to mobile communications networks. For all the previous for scenarios depicted before (propagation, multiantenna systems, mobility and challenges) we provide some contributions already published (or submitted for revision or still in progress) on publications and international conferences.

Pest management practices that rely on pesticides are growing increasingly less effective and environmentally inappropriate in many cases and the search of alternatives is under focus nowadays. Exclusion of pests from the crop by means of pesticide-treated screens can be an eco-friendly method to protect crops, especially if pests are vectors of important diseases. The mesh size of nets is crucial to determine if insects can eventually cross the barrier or exclude them because there is a great variation in insect size depending on the species. Long-lasting insecticide-treated (LLITN) nets, factory pre-treated, have been used since years to fight against mosquitoes vector of malaria and are able to retain their biological efficacy under field for 3 years. In agriculture, treated nets with different insecticides have shown efficacy in controlling some insects and mites, so they seem to be a good tool in helping to solve some pest problems. However, treated nets must be carefully evaluated because can diminish air flow, increase temperature and humidity and decrease light transmission, which may affect plant growth, pests and natural enemies. As biological control is considered a key factor in IPM nowadays, the potential negative effects of treated nets on natural enemies need to be studied carefully. In this work, the effects of a bifentrhin-treated net (3 g/Kg) (supplied by the company Intelligent Insect Control, IIC) on natural enemies of aphids were tested on a cucumber crop in Central Spain in autumn 2011. The crop was sown in 8x6.5 m tunnels divided in 2 sealed compartments with control or treated nets, which were simple yellow netting with 25 mesh (10 x 10 threads/cm2; 1 x 1 mm hole size). Pieces of 2 m high of the treated-net were placed along the lateral sides of one of the two tunnel compartments in each of the 3 available tunnels (replicates); the rest was covered by a commercial untreated net of a similar mesh. The pest, Aphis gossypii Glover (Aphidae), the parasitoid Aphidius colemani (Haliday) (Braconidae) and the predator Adalia bipunctata L. (Coccinellidae) were artificially introduced in the crop. Weekly sampling was done determining the presence or absence of the pest and the natural enemies (NE) in the 42 plants/compartment as well as the number of insects in 11 marked plants. Environmental conditions (temperature, relative humidity, UV and PAR radiation) were recorded. Results show that when aphids were artificially released inside the tunnels, neither its number/plant nor their distribution was affected by the treated net. A lack of negative effect of the insecticide-treated net on natural enemies was also observed. Adalia bipunctata did not establish in the crop and only a short term control of aphids was observed one week after release. On the other hand, A. colemani did establish in the crop and a more long-term effect on the numbers of aphids/plant was detected irrespective of the type of net. Determinar con buena precisión la posición en la que se encuentra un terminal móvil, cuando éste se halla inmerso en un entorno de interior (centros comerciales, edificios de oficinas, aeropuertos, estaciones, túneles, etc), es el pilar básico sobre el que se sustentan un gran número de aplicaciones y servicios. Muchos de esos servicios se encuentran ya disponibles en entornos de exterior, aunque los entornos de interior se prestan a otros servicios específicos para ellos. Ese número, sin embargo, podría ser significativamente mayor de lo que actualmente es, si no fuera necesaria una costosa infraestructura para llevar a cabo el posicionamiento con la precisión adecuada a cada uno de los hipotéticos servicios. O, igualmente, si la citada infraestructura pudiera tener otros usos distintos, además del relacionado con el posicionamiento. La usabilidad de la misma infraestructura para otros fines distintos ofrecería la oportunidad de que la misma estuviera ya presente en las diferentes localizaciones, porque ha sido previamente desplegada para esos otros usos; o bien facilitaría su despliegue, porque el coste de esa operación ofreciera un mayor retorno de usabilidad para quien lo realiza. Las tecnologías inalámbricas de comunicaciones basadas en radiofrecuencia, ya en uso para las comunicaciones de voz y datos (móviles, WLAN, etc), cumplen el requisito anteriormente indicado y, por tanto, facilitarían el crecimiento de las aplicaciones y servicios basados en el posicionamiento, en el caso de poderse emplear para ello. Sin embargo, determinar la posición con el nivel de precisión adecuado mediante el uso de estas tecnologías, es un importante reto hoy en día. El presente trabajo pretende aportar avances significativos en este campo. A lo largo del mismo se llevará a cabo, en primer lugar, un estudio de los principales algoritmos y técnicas auxiliares de posicionamiento aplicables en entornos de interior. La revisión se centrará en aquellos que sean aptos tanto para tecnologías móviles de última generación como para entornos WLAN. Con ello, se pretende poner de relieve las ventajas e inconvenientes de cada uno de estos algoritmos, teniendo como motivación final su aplicabilidad tanto al mundo de las redes móviles 3G y 4G (en especial a las femtoceldas y small-cells LTE) como al indicado entorno WLAN; y teniendo siempre presente que el objetivo último es que vayan a ser usados en interiores. La principal conclusión de esa revisión es que las técnicas de triangulación, comúnmente empleadas para realizar la localización en entornos de exterior, se muestran inútiles en los entornos de interior, debido a efectos adversos propios de este tipo de entornos como la pérdida de visión directa o los caminos múltiples en el recorrido de la señal. Los métodos de huella radioeléctrica, más conocidos bajo el término inglés “fingerprinting”, que se basan en la comparación de los valores de potencia de señal que se están recibiendo en el momento de llevar a cabo el posicionamiento por un terminal móvil, frente a los valores registrados en un mapa radio de potencias, elaborado durante una fase inicial de calibración, aparecen como los mejores de entre los posibles para los escenarios de interior. Sin embargo, estos sistemas se ven también afectados por otros problemas, como por ejemplo los importantes trabajos a realizar para ponerlos en marcha, y la variabilidad del canal. Frente a ellos, en el presente trabajo se presentan dos contribuciones originales para mejorar los sistemas basados en los métodos fingerprinting. La primera de esas contribuciones describe un método para determinar, de manera sencilla, las características básicas del sistema a nivel del número de muestras necesarias para crear el mapa radio de la huella radioeléctrica de referencia, junto al número mínimo de emisores de radiofrecuencia que habrá que desplegar; todo ello, a partir de unos requerimientos iniciales relacionados con el error y la precisión buscados en el posicionamiento a realizar, a los que uniremos los datos correspondientes a las dimensiones y realidad física del entorno. De esa forma, se establecen unas pautas iniciales a la hora de dimensionar el sistema, y se combaten los efectos negativos que, sobre el coste o el rendimiento del sistema en su conjunto, son debidos a un despliegue ineficiente de los emisores de radiofrecuencia y de los puntos de captura de su huella. La segunda contribución incrementa la precisión resultante del sistema en tiempo real, gracias a una técnica de recalibración automática del mapa radio de potencias. Esta técnica tiene en cuenta las medidas reportadas continuamente por unos pocos puntos de referencia estáticos, estratégicamente distribuidos en el entorno, para recalcular y actualizar las potencias registradas en el mapa radio. Un beneficio adicional a nivel operativo de la citada técnica, es la prolongación del tiempo de usabilidad fiable del sistema, bajando la frecuencia en la que se requiere volver a capturar el mapa radio de potencias completo. Las mejoras anteriormente citadas serán de aplicación directa en la mejora de los mecanismos de posicionamiento en interiores basados en la infraestructura inalámbrica de comunicaciones de voz y datos. A partir de ahí, esa mejora será extensible y de aplicabilidad sobre los servicios de localización (conocimiento personal del lugar donde uno mismo se encuentra), monitorización (conocimiento por terceros del citado lugar) y seguimiento (monitorización prolongada en el tiempo), ya que todos ellas toman como base un correcto posicionamiento para un adecuado desempeño. ABSTRACT To find the position where a mobile is located with good accuracy, when it is immersed in an indoor environment (shopping centers, office buildings, airports, stations, tunnels, etc.), is the cornerstone on which a large number of applications and services are supported. Many of these services are already available in outdoor environments, although the indoor environments are suitable for other services that are specific for it. That number, however, could be significantly higher than now, if an expensive infrastructure were not required to perform the positioning service with adequate precision, for each one of the hypothetical services. Or, equally, whether that infrastructure may have other different uses beyond the ones associated with positioning. The usability of the same infrastructure for purposes other than positioning could give the opportunity of having it already available in the different locations, because it was previously deployed for these other uses; or facilitate its deployment, because the cost of that operation would offer a higher return on usability for the deployer. Wireless technologies based on radio communications, already in use for voice and data communications (mobile, WLAN, etc), meet the requirement of additional usability and, therefore, could facilitate the growth of applications and services based on positioning, in the case of being able to use it. However, determining the position with the appropriate degree of accuracy using these technologies is a major challenge today. This paper provides significant advances in this field. Along this work, a study about the main algorithms and auxiliar techniques related with indoor positioning will be initially carried out. The review will be focused in those that are suitable to be used with both last generation mobile technologies and WLAN environments. By doing this, it is tried to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each one of these algorithms, having as final motivation their applicability both in the world of 3G and 4G mobile networks (especially in femtocells and small-cells of LTE) and in the WLAN world; and having always in mind that the final aim is to use it in indoor environments. The main conclusion of that review is that triangulation techniques, commonly used for localization in outdoor environments, are useless in indoor environments due to adverse effects of such environments as loss of sight or multipaths. Triangulation techniques used for external locations are useless due to adverse effects like the lack of line of sight or multipath. Fingerprinting methods, based on the comparison of Received Signal Strength values measured by the mobile phone with a radio map of RSSI Recorded during the calibration phase, arise as the best methods for indoor scenarios. However, these systems are also affected by other problems, for example the important load of tasks to be done to have the system ready to work, and the variability of the channel. In front of them, in this paper we present two original contributions to improve the fingerprinting methods based systems. The first one of these contributions describes a method for find, in a simple way, the basic characteristics of the system at the level of the number of samples needed to create the radio map inside the referenced fingerprint, and also by the minimum number of radio frequency emitters that are needed to be deployed; and both of them coming from some initial requirements for the system related to the error and accuracy in positioning wanted to have, which it will be joined the data corresponding to the dimensions and physical reality of the environment. Thus, some initial guidelines when dimensioning the system will be in place, and the negative effects into the cost or into the performance of the whole system, due to an inefficient deployment of the radio frequency emitters and of the radio map capture points, will be minimized. The second contribution increases the resulting accuracy of the system when working in real time, thanks to a technique of automatic recalibration of the power measurements stored in the radio map. This technique takes into account the continuous measures reported by a few static reference points, strategically distributed in the environment, to recalculate and update the measurements stored into the map radio. An additional benefit at operational level of such technique, is the extension of the reliable time of the system, decreasing the periodicity required to recapture the radio map within full measurements. The above mentioned improvements are directly applicable to improve indoor positioning mechanisms based on voice and data wireless communications infrastructure. From there, that improvement will be also extensible and applicable to location services (personal knowledge of the location where oneself is), monitoring (knowledge by other people of your location) and monitoring (prolonged monitoring over time) as all of them are based in a correct positioning for proper performance.

This paper describes the experimental setup, procedure, and results obtained, concerning the dynamics of a body lying on a floor, attached to a hinge, and exposed to an unsteady flow, which is a model of the initiation of rotational motion of ballast stones due to the wind generated by the passing of a high-speed train. The idea is to obtain experimental data to support the theoretical model developed in Sanz-Andres and Navarro-Medina (J Wind Eng Ind Aerodyn 98, 772–783, (2010), aimed at analyzing the initial phase of the ballast train-induced-wind erosion (BATIWE) phenomenon. The experimental setup is based on an open circuit, closed test section, low-speed wind tunnel, with a new sinusoidal gust generator mechanism concept, designed and built at the IDR/UPM. The tunnel’s main characteristic is the ability to generate a flow with a uniform velocity profile and sinusoidal time fluctuation of the speed. Experimental results and theoretical model predictions are in good agreement.

El presente trabajo ahonda en el conocimiento del viento urbano. La investigación pasa revista a la historia de la relación del viento y la ciudad y revisa tres pares de disciplinas implicadas en comprender mejor dicha relación: la arquitectura y el urbanismo, la meteorología y la climatología y, por último, la ingeniería aeroespacial y la aerodinámica civil. Se estudian el comportamiento y la fluidez del viento al desplazarse por cuerpos romos no fuselados (los edificios y la trama urbana), así como sus efectos dentro de la ciudad. Asimismo, se examinan las metodologías existentes para comprenderlo, medirlo y analizarlo, desde los estudios de proporción y modelamiento en túneles de viento hasta las simulaciones virtuales y las dinámicas de fluidos CFD. Posteriormente se reconoce un caso de estudio que permite analizar el viento como un factor aislado, pero desde los parámetros morfológicos de una ciudad en la que se generan patrones aerodinámicos muy característicos: Punta Arenas, la ciudad más austral del mundo, donde los vientos corren casi siempre desde la misma dirección, el “oeste”, a más de 33,3 m/s, lo que equivale a 120 Km/h. La hipótesis de la investigación es que la morfología del casco histórico de Punta Arenas genera patrones aerodinámicos que condicionan el bienestar en los espacios públicos. El objetivo general de la investigación es estudiar los efectos aerodinámicos presentes en la morfología urbana para mejorar la permanencia en los espacios públicos, proponiendo estrategias para el desarrollo morfológico y volumétrico de los cuerpos edificados. En el desarrollo del caso de estudio se reconocen, al interior del cañón urbano, las temperaturas, los índices de asoleamiento y sus conos de sombra, la dirección del viento y la visualización del vórtice al interior del cañón urbano, para determinar cómo estos factores impactan en el espacio público. Las conclusiones indican que los patrones aerodinámicos presentes en la morfología urbana conducen el viento hacia los espacios públicos que se encuentran o desprotegidos del viento o con excesiva turbulencias, por tanto, los patrones aerodinámicos inciden en el uso estancial de los espacios públicos, generando problemas mecánicos al peatón e incidiendo en la sensación térmica en dichos espacios. Ello permite confirmar que es posible modificar y mejorar el uso de los espacios públicos si somos capaces de modelar la morfología urbana con el fin de reorientar los patrones aerodinámicos que afectan significativamente a dichos espacios. ABSTRACT This work deepens into the knowledge of urban wind. The study reviews the history of the relationship between the wind and the city and reviews three pairs of disciplines involved in understanding better these relationship: Architecture and Urbanism, Meteorology and Climatology and, finally, Aerospace and Civil Aerodynamics. The behavior and flow of wind through blunt bodies not fairings (the buildings and the urban fabric) and its effects within the city are studied. Also, existing methodologies to understand, measure and analyze the wind are examined, from the studios of proportion and modeling in wind tunnels to virtual simulations and fluid dynamics CFD. Subsequently, a case study to analyze the wind as an isolated factor is recognized, but from the morphological parameters of a city where very characteristic aerodynamic patterns are generated: Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in the world, where the winds run almost always from the same direction, the "West", at more than 33.3 m/s, which is equivalent to 120 km/h. The research hypothesis is that the morphology of the historic center of Punta Arenas generates aerodynamic patterns that determine the well-being in public spaces. The overall objective of the research is to study the aerodynamic effects present in the urban morphology to improve retention in public spaces, proposing strategies for morphological and volumetric development of the built bodies. In developing the case study are recognized, within the urban canyon, temperatures, rates of sunlight and shadow cones, wind direction and visualization of the vortex into the urban canyon, to determine how these factors impact in public space. The findings indicate that the aerodynamic patterns in urban morphology lead wind to public spaces that are unprotected or find themselves in a condition of excessive wind or turbulence; therefore, aerodynamic patterns affect the use of public spaces, generating mechanical problems for pedestrians and affecting the thermal sensation in such spaces. This confirms that it is possible to modify and improve the use of public spaces if we are able to model the urban morphology in order to reorient the aerodynamic patterns that significantly affect those spaces.

Los programas de Gestión Integrada de Plagas (GIP) promueven el uso de estrategias de control que sean respetuosas con el medio ambiente, sin embargo el uso de insecticidas en los cultivos hortícolas sigue siendo necesario para el control de determinadas plagas, como es el caso de la mosca blanca Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius). Por ello, el objetivo de esta tesis es el estudio de la integración de las tres estrategias de control más empleadas hoy en día para el control de plagas: el control biológico, el físico y el químico. Una primera parte de este trabajo ha consistido en el estudio de los efectos letales y subletales de once insecticidas, aplicados a la dosis máxima de campo, sobre los enemigos naturales Eretmocerus mundus Mercet y Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot, mediante ensayos de laboratorio y persistencia (laboratorio extendido). Para la evaluación de la toxicidad de los insecticidas sobre los estados de vida más protegidos de estos enemigos naturales, se trataron bajo la Torre de Potter las pupas de E. mundus y los huevos de A. swirskii. Además, se llevaron a cabo ensayos de contacto residual para determinar los efectos letales y subletales de estos insecticidas sobre el estado adulto de ambas especies de enemigos naturales. Para ello, los pesticidas se aplicaron sobre placas de cristal (laboratorio) o sobre plantas (laboratorio extendido: persistencia). Los resultados mostraron que los insecticidas flonicamida, flubendiamida, metaflumizona, metoxifenocida, spiromesifen y spirotetramat eran compatibles con el estado de pupa de E. mundus (OILB 1: Inocuos). Sin embargo, abamectina, deltametrina y emamectina fueron categorizadas como ligeramente tóxicas (OILB 2) al causar efectos deletéreos. Los dos pesticidas más tóxicos fueron spinosad y sulfoxaflor, los cuales redujeron significativamente la emergencia de las pupas tratadas (OILB 4: Tóxicos). Flonicamida, flubendiamida, metoxifenocida y spiromesifen fueron compatibles con el estado adulto de E. mundus (OILB 1: Inocuos). Abamectina, deltametrina, emamectina, metaflumizona y spiromesifen pueden ser recomendados para su uso en programas de GIP, si se usan los plazos de seguridad apropiados, de acuerdo con la persistencia de cada uno de estos insecticidas, antes de la liberación del enemigo natural. Al contrario, spinosad y sulfoxaflor no resultaron ser compatibles (OILB D: Persistentes), aunque la realización de ensayos adicionales es necesaria para ver los efectos de los mismos en campo. Todos los insecticidas estudiados, excepto el spirotetramat (OILB 2: Ligeramente tóxico), fueron selectivos para el estado de huevo de A. swirskii (OILB 1: Inocuos). Flonicamida, flubendiamida, metaflumizona, metoxifenocida, spiromesifen, spirotetramat y sulfoxaflor, fueron compatibles con el estado adulto de A. swirskii (OILB 1: Inocuos). Abamectina, deltametrina, emamectina y spinosad pueden ser recomendados para su uso en programas de GIP, si se usan los plazos de seguridad apropiados, de acuerdo con la persistencia de cada uno de estos insecticidas, antes de la liberación del enemigo natural. Entre las nuevas estrategias de la GIP, los plásticos y mallas fotoselectivas han demostrado ser una herramienta importante para el control de plagas y enfermedades en cultivos hortícolas protegidos. Por ello, en una segunda parte de este trabajo, se estudiaron tanto los efectos directos, como la combinación de efectos directos y mediados por planta y plaga de ambientes pobres en luz UV, en presencia o ausencia del Virus del rizado amarillo del tomate (TYLCV), sobre E. mundus. En primer lugar, se realizó un ensayo al aire libre para la evaluación de la capacidad de vuelo de E. mundus en cajas tipo túnel (1 x 0,6 x 0,6 m) cubiertas con distintas barreras absorbentes de luz UV. Se detectó un efecto directo en la capacidad de orientación de E. mundus, debido a que este parasitoide utiliza estímulos visuales para localizar a sus huéspedes, únicamente en las barreras que bloqueaban más del 65% de la luz UV (malla G). En segundo lugar, bajo condiciones de invernadero, se evaluó la combinación de efectos directos y mediados por planta y plaga sobre E. mundus, usando plantas de tomate sanas o infectadas con el TYLCV y cajas (30 x 30 x 60 cm) cubiertas con los distintos plásticos fotoselectivos. En este caso, no se observó ningún efecto en la capacidad benéfica del parasitoide cuando este estaba en contacto con plantas de tomate infestadas con ninfas de B. tabaci, lo que demuestra que este insecto usa estímulos táctiles para encontrar a sus huéspedes a cortas distancias. Además, las diferentes condiciones de radiación UV estudiadas tuvieron cierto impacto en la morfología, fisiología y bioquímica de las plantas de tomate, infestadas o no con el virus de la cuchara, detectándose pequeñas alteraciones en alguno de los parámetros estudiados, como el peso fresco y seco, el contenido en H y el espesor de las cutículas y de las paredes celulares de la epidermis foliar. Por último, no se observaron efectos de la radiación UV mediados por planta, ni en B. tabaci ni en su parasitoide, E. mundus. En una tercera parte, se evaluaron los efectos de una malla tratada con bifentrin sobre ambos enemigos naturales, en ensayos de laboratorio, semicampo y campo. Las mallas tratadas fueron diseñadas originariamente para el control de mosquitos vectores de la malaria, y actualmente se está trabajando para su uso en agricultura, como una nueva estrategia de control de plagas. En ensayos de laboratorio, cuando adultos de E. mundus y A. swirskii se expusieron por contacto durante 72 horas con la malla tratada (cajas de 6 cm diámetro), se registró una alta mortalidad. Sin embargo, en el ensayo de preferencia, estos enemigos naturales no fueron capaces de detectar la presencia de bifentrin y, en aquellos individuos forzados a atravesar la malla tratada, no se observó mortalidad a corto plazo (72 horas). En estudios de semicampo, llevados a cabo bajo condiciones de invernadero en cajas de 25 x 25 x 60 cm de altura, la capacidad benéfica de E. mundus no se vio afectada. Finalmente, en ensayos de campo llevados a cabo en invernaderos comerciales (4000m2) en Almería, A. swirskii no se vio afectado por la presencia en el cultivo de la malla tratada con bifentrin y los niveles de infestación de B. tabaci y F. occidentalis detectados bajo dicha malla, fueron inferiores a los del control. Por último, se ha evaluado la composición de la microflora bacteriana de tres especies de parasitoides, E. mundus, Eretmocerus eremicus Rose & Zolnerowich y Encarsia formosa Gahan, y la influencia de la misma en su susceptibilidad a insecticidas. Se llevó a cabo una extracción total de ADN de los insectos y la región variable V4 del ARNr se amplificó usando cebadores universales bacterianos. Para identificar las secuencias de los géneros bacterianos presentes en los parasitoides, se realizó una Next Generation sequencing (Illumina sequencing). Una vez identificados los géneros bacterianos, el gen ADNr 16S de las Actinobacterias se amplificó del ADN extraído de los insectos, usando cebadores universales bacterianos y específicos de Actinobacterias, y los productos de la Nested PCR fueron clonados para identificar todas las especies del género Arthrobacter. Tres bacterias (A. aurescens Phillips, A. nicotinovarans Kodama, Yamamoto, Amano and Amichi y A. uratoxydans Stackebrandt, Fowler, Fiedler and Seiler), próximas a las especies de Arthrobacter presentes en los parasitoides, se obtuvieron de la colección bacteriana del BCCMTM/LMG y se midió su actividad esterasa. Finalmente, se realizaron ensayos con antibióticos (tetraciclina) y de contacto residual con insecticidas (abamectina) para determinar la influencia de las especies de Arthrobacter en la susceptibilidad de E. mundus a insecticidas. Los resultados muestran que este género bacteriano puede afectar a la toxicidad de E. mundus a abamectina, mostrando la importancia de la comunidad microbiana en enemigos naturales, factor que debe ser considerado en los estudios de evaluación de los riesgos de los insecticidas. ABSTRACT Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs promote the use of control strategies more respectful with the environment; however the use of insecticides in vegetable crops is still needed to control certain pests, such as the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius). Therefore, the objective of this work is to study the integration of the three most commonly used pest control strategies nowadays: biological, physical and chemical control. Firstly, the lethal and sublethal effects of eleven insecticides, applied at their maximum field recommended concentration, on the parasitic wasp Eretmocerus mundus Mercet and the predator Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot has been assessed in the laboratory and in persistence tests (extended laboratory). To test the effects of pesticides on the most protected life stage of these natural enemies, E. mundus pupae and A. swirskii eggs were sprayed under a Potter precision spray tower. Laboratory contact tests were therefore conducted to determine the lethal and sublethal effects of these pesticides on the adult stage of these natural enemies. In the residual contact tests the pesticides were applied on glass plates (laboratory) or plants (extended laboratory: persistence). The study showed that the insecticides flonicamid, flubendiamide, metaflumizone, methoxyfenozide, spiromesifen and spirotetramat were selective for E. mundus pupae (IOBC 1: Harmless). Nevertheless, abamectin, deltamethrin and emamectin were categorized as slightly harmful (IOBC 2) due to the deleterious effects caused. The two most harmful pesticides were spinosad and sulfoxaflor, which significantly reduced the adult emergence from treated pupae (IOBC 4: Harmful). Flonicamid, flubendiamide, methoxyfenozide and spiromesifen were compatible with E. mundus adults (IOBC 1: Harmless). Base on the duration of the harmful activity, abamectin, deltamethrin, emamectin, metaflumizone and spirotetramat could be recommended for use in IPM programs if appropriate safety deadlines are used before the natural enemy release. On the contrary, spinosad and sulfoxaflor were not compatible (IOBC D: persistent), although additional studies are required to determine their effects under field conditions. All the pesticides tested, except spirotetramat (IOBC 2: Slightly harmful), were selective for A. swirskii eggs (IOBC 1: Harmless). Flonicamid, flubendiamide, metaflumizone, methoxyfenozide, spiromesifen, spirotetramat and sulfoxaflor were compatible with A. swirskii adults (IOBC 1: Harmless). However, abamectin, deltamethrin, emamectin and spinosad could be recommended for use in IPM programs if appropriate safety deadlines are used before the natural enemy release. Among new IPM strategies, UV-absorbing photoselective plastic films and nets have been shown to be an important tool for the control of pests and diseases in horticultural protected crops. Because of that, we secondly studied the plant and pest insect-mediated and/or the direct effects on E. mundus under different UV radiation conditions, in presence or absence of the Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV). In the first experiment, performed outdoors, the flight activity of E. mundus was studied in one-chamber tunnels (1 x 0.6 x 0.6 m) covered with different photoselective barriers. Because E. mundus uses visual cues for host location at a long distance, a direct effect on its host location ability was detected, but only in the UV-absorbing barriers blocking more than 65% of the UV light (G net). In a second experiment, the direct and plant and pest insect-mediated effects of different UV radiation conditions on E. mundus were studied, inside cages (30 x 30 x 60 cm) covered with the different UVplastic films and under greenhouse conditions, using healthy or TYLCV-virus infected tomato plants. In this case, not any effect on the beneficial capacity of this parasitoid was detected, proving that he uses tactile cues at a short distance of the host. Moreover, the different UV radiation conditions studied had a certain direct impact in the morphology, physiology and biochemistry of tomato plants infested or not with the TYLCV, and small alterations in some parameters such as fresh and dry weight, H percentage and cuticle and cell wall thickness of epidermal cells of the leaves, were detected. Finally, none plant-mediated UV effects neither in the whitefly B. tabaci nor in their parasitic wasp were found. Thirdly, the effects of a bifenthrin treated net were evaluated in different laboratory, semi-field and field experiments on the natural enemies studied. Treated nets were developed long time ago aiming at the control of the mosquitoes vectors of malaria, and nowadays, there is a great interest on assessing the possibility of their use in agriculture. In laboratory assays, a high mortality was recorded when E. mundus and A. swirskii adults were exposed by contact to the bifenthrin treated net for 72 hours in small cages (12 cm diameter). However, these natural enemies were not able to detect the presence of bifenthrin in a dual-choice test and no short-term mortality (72 hours) was recorded in those individuals that went through the treated net. In semi-field assays, performed under greenhouse conditions with cages of 25 x 25 x 60 cm high, the beneficial capacity of E. mundus was not affected. Finally, in field assays carried out in commercial multispan greenhouses (4000 m2) in Almería, A. swirskii was not affected by the presence of the bifenthrin treated net in the crop and the B. tabaci and F. occidentalis infestation levels were significantly lower than in the control. Finally, the composition of the microflora present in three species of parasitoids, E. mundus, Eretmocerus eremicus Rose & Zolnerowich and Encarsia formosa Gahan, and its influence in their susceptibility to insecticides, have been assessed. A total DNA extraction was performed on insects and universal bacterial primers were used to amplify the variable V4 region of the rRNA. A Next Generation sequencing (Illumina sequencing) was performed to identify the sequences of the bacterial genera present in the parasitic wasps. Once, the bacterial genera were identified, 16S rDNA gene of Actinobacteria were amplified from insects DNA extracts using the universal bacterial and actinobacterial primers, and the nested PCR products, were cloned to identify the Arthrobacter species. Three bacteria (A. aurescens Phillips, A. nicotinovarans Kodama, Yamamoto, Amano and Amichi and A. uratoxydans Stackebrandt, Fowler, Fiedler and Seiler), having the closest match with the Arthrobacter species present in the parasitic wasps, were obtained from the BCCMTM/LMG bacteria collection and its esterase activity was measured. Finally, antibiotic and residual contact tests were done to determine the influence of Arthrobacter species in the susceptibility of E. mundus to pesticides (abamectin). The results suggest that this bacterial genus can affect the toxicity of E. mundus to abamectin, which in turn supports the importance of the microbial community in natural enemies that it should be considered as a factor in risk assessment tests of pesticides.

We propose an interpretation of the experimental findings of Klinman and coworkers [Cha, Y., Murray, C. J. & Klinman, J. P. (1989) Science 243, 1325–1330; Grant, K. L. & Klinman, J. P. (1989) Biochemistry 28, 6597–6605; and Bahnson, B. J. & Klinman, J. P. (1995) Methods Enzymol. 249, 373–397], who showed that proton transfer reactions that are catalyzed by bovine serum amine oxidase proceed through tunneling. We show that two different tunneling models are consistent with the experiments. In the first model, the proton tunnels from the ground state. The temperature dependence of the kinetic isotope effect is caused by a thermally excited substrate mode that modulates the barrier, as has been suggested by Borgis and Hynes [Borgis, D. & Hynes, J. T. (1991) J. Chem. Phys. 94, 3619–3628]. In the second model, there is both over-the-barrier transfer and tunneling from excited states. Finally, we propose two experiments that can distinguish between the possible mechanisms.

Manganese oxide minerals have been used for thousands of years—by the ancients for pigments and to clarify glass, and today as ores of Mn metal, catalysts, and battery material. More than 30 Mn oxide minerals occur in a wide variety of geological settings. They are major components of Mn nodules that pave huge areas of the ocean floor and bottoms of many fresh-water lakes. Mn oxide minerals are ubiquitous in soils and sediments and participate in a variety of chemical reactions that affect groundwater and bulk soil composition. Their typical occurrence as fine-grained mixtures makes it difficult to study their atomic structures and crystal chemistries. In recent years, however, investigations using transmission electron microscopy and powder x-ray and neutron diffraction methods have provided important new insights into the structures and properties of these materials. The crystal structures for todorokite and birnessite, two of the more common Mn oxide minerals in terrestrial deposits and ocean nodules, were determined by using powder x-ray diffraction data and the Rietveld refinement method. Because of the large tunnels in todorokite and related structures there is considerable interest in the use of these materials and synthetic analogues as catalysts and cation exchange agents. Birnessite-group minerals have layer structures and readily undergo oxidation reduction and cation-exchange reactions and play a major role in controlling groundwater chemistry.

No país existem inúmeras estruturas e obras civis que estão em operação a dezenas de anos e necessitam de monitoramento periódico devido a sua importância. Por este motivo, a dissertação apresenta um caso de um túnel antigo com problema de queda de bloco e visa instigar novas pesquisas e aumentar o conhecimento sobre o tema. Foram realizadas inspeções em campo em alguns túneis não revestidos da Estrada de Ferro Vitória-Minas (EFVM), bem como os ensaios em laboratório e in situ realizados nas amostras e no maciço rochoso para caracterizar o problema. Para o estudo foi escolhido o túnel Monte Seco Linha 1 e Linha 2 nos quais foram realizadas sondagens rotativas inclinadas e orientadas próximas ao eixo para investigação dos planos de descontinuidade. Os conceitos da Teoria dos Blocos-Chave foram aplicados às famílias de descontinuidades encontradas nos Túneis Monte Seco L1 e L2 para identificar os possíveis blocos instáveis formados pelas escavações. Para obtenção dos parâmetros geotécnicos de resistência e deformabilidade foram realizados ensaios de compressão uniaxial instrumentados com strain gages. A resistência a tração foi obtida através de Ensaio de Compressão Diametral (ECD). No ensaio de campo foi utilizado o Martelo de Schmidt para avaliação da rocha in situ. Através da análise dos dados foi possível distinguir setores cuja ocorrência de queda de blocos são maiores e a classe do maciço rochoso de acordo com a proposta de Bieniawski.

La subsidencia del terreno es un riesgo natural que afecta a amplias zonas del territorio causando importantes daños económicos y una gran alarma social. La subsidencia del terreno puede deberse a numerosas causas como la disolución de materiales profundos, la construcción de obras subterráneas o de galerías mineras, la erosión del terreno en profundidad, el flujo lateral del suelo, la compactación de los materiales que constituyen el terreno o la actividad tectónica. Todas estas causas se manifiestan en la superficie del terreno mediante deformaciones verticales que pueden variar desde pocos milímetros hasta varios metros durante periodos que varían desde minutos hasta años.

Far-field stresses are those present in a volume of rock prior to excavations being created. Estimates of the orientation and magnitude of far-field stresses, often used in mine design, are generally obtained by single-point measurements of stress, or large-scale, regional trends. Point measurements can be a poor representation of far-field stresses as a result of excavation-induced stresses and geological structures. For these reasons, far-field stress estimates can be associated with high levels of uncertainty. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the practical feasibility, applications, and limitations of calibrating far-field stress estimates through tunnel deformation measurements captured using LiDAR imaging. A method that estimates the orientation and magnitude of excavation-induced principal stress changes through back-analysis of deformation measurements from LiDAR imaged tunnels was developed and tested using synthetic data. If excavation-induced stress change orientations and magnitudes can be accurately estimated, they can be used in the calibration of far-field stress input to numerical models. LiDAR point clouds have been proven to have a number of underground applications, thus it is desired to explore their use in numerical model calibration. The back-analysis method is founded on the superposition of stresses and requires a two-dimensional numerical model of the deforming tunnel. Principal stress changes of known orientation and magnitude are applied to the model to create calibration curves. Estimation can then be performed by minimizing squared differences between the measured tunnel and sets of calibration curve deformations. In addition to the back-analysis estimation method, a procedure consisting of previously existing techniques to measure tunnel deformation using LiDAR imaging was documented. Under ideal conditions, the back-analysis method estimated principal stress change orientations within ±5° and magnitudes within ±2 MPa. Results were comparable for four different tunnel profile shapes. Preliminary testing using plastic deformation, a rough tunnel profile, and profile occlusions suggests that the method can work under more realistic conditions. The results from this thesis set the groundwork for the continued development of a new, inexpensive, and efficient far-field stress estimate calibration method.

To reconstruct the still poorly understood thermocline fluctuations in the western tropical Indian Ocean, a sediment core located off Tanzania (GeoB12610-2; 04°49.00'S, 39°25.42'E, 399?m water depth) covering the last 35 ka was analysed. Mg/Ca-derived temperatures from the planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber (white) and Neogloboquadrina dutertrei indicate that the last glacial was ~2.5 °C colder in the surface waters and ~3.5 °C colder in the thermocline compared with the present day. The depth of the thermocline and thus the stratification of the water column were shallower during glacial periods and deepened during the deglaciation and Holocene. The increased inflow of Southern Ocean Intermediate Waters via 'ocean tunnels' appears to cool the thermocline from below, leading to a similarity between the thermocline record of GeoB12610-2 with the Antarctic EDML temperature curve during the glacial. With rising sea level and the corresponding greater inflow of Red Sea Waters and Indonesian Intermediate Waters, the proportion of Southern Ocean Intermediate Water within the South Equatorial Current is reduced and, by Holocene time, the correlation to Antarctica is barely traceable. Comparison with the eastern Indian Ocean reveals that the thermocline depth reverses from the last glacial to present.
