PURPOSE: To determine whether the treatment of hypersensitive teeth with gaseous ozone (Healozone, KaVo 1600 ppm) for 60 seconds reduces pain immediately after treatment and in the longer term. METHODS: In three private practices in Switzerland, 31 subjects suffering from hypersensitive teeth were treated with gaseous ozone over a period of 54 weeks (one test and one control tooth in each subject). A cross-over design was chosen. The pain level was measured with a Visual Analogue Scale before and after the treatment. RESULTS: The subjects' pain level was reduced by 55% +/- 5.5% immediately after the ozone treatment. Over time, the pain level decreased significantly in all groups: The pain level in the test teeth was significantly reduced in Weeks 0-22 (treatment group, P < 0.001) compared to the pain level before treatment. The pain level in the control group was also reduced significantly over time in Weeks 0-22 (no-treatment, P = 0.025) and in Weeks 22-54 (treatment group, P = 0.0065). Comparing test and control teeth over time, there was no statistically significant difference in pain reduction (P = 0.58).

There is substantial genetic variability in response to ozone amongst and within tree species. Aspen is a highly variable species with a wide range of responses to ozone. Aspen response to elevated O3 levels is being investigated at the Aspen FACE site near Rhinelander, WI where five aspen clones of varying O3 tolerance have been fumigated with elevated O3 over the past decade. In this study, we examined the physiological differences in two of the aspen clones that differed significantly in their O3 tolerance with 8L being tolerant and 42E being sensitive. Throughout the 2007 and 2008 growing seasons we periodically estimated instantaneous photosynthetic rates, ACi responses and light response curves. The results of our study suggest that aspen clone 8L’s tolerance is due in part to decreased stomatal conductance early in the season, which lowered ozone uptake. Later during the season O3 uptake was comparable for the two clones. Our results also suggest the response of Vcmax, TPU, Rd, Gm, light compensation point and quantum flux to elevated O3 did not differ significantly between the two clones. Ozone uptake is important for ozone tolerance in clone 8L early in the season but cannot explain late season tolerance. Photosynthetic parameters for the two clones were similar, so clone 8L’s ozone tolerance is not due to a more efficient photosynthetic system.

This work presents a 1-D process scale model used to investigate the chemical dynamics and temporal variability of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ozone (O3) within and above snowpack at Summit, Greenland for March-May 2009 and estimates surface exchange of NOx between the snowpack and surface layer in April-May 2009. The model assumes the surface of snowflakes have a Liquid Like Layer (LLL) where aqueous chemistry occurs and interacts with the interstitial air of the snowpack. Model parameters and initialization are physically and chemically representative of snowpack at Summit, Greenland and model results are compared to measurements of NOx and O3 collected by our group at Summit, Greenland from 2008-2010. The model paired with measurements confirmed the main hypothesis in literature that photolysis of nitrate on the surface of snowflakes is responsible for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) production in the top ~50 cm of the snowpack at solar noon for March – May time periods in 2009. Nighttime peaks of NO2 in the snowpack for April and May were reproduced with aqueous formation of peroxynitric acid (HNO4) in the top ~50 cm of the snowpack with subsequent mass transfer to the gas phase, decomposition to form NO2 at nighttime, and transportation of the NO2 to depths of 2 meters. Modeled production of HNO4 was hindered in March 2009 due to the low production of its precursor, hydroperoxy radical, resulting in underestimation of nighttime NO2 in the snowpack for March 2009. The aqueous reaction of O3 with formic acid was the major sync of O3 in the snowpack for March-May, 2009. Nitrogen monoxide (NO) production in the top ~50 cm of the snowpack is related to the photolysis of NO2, which underrepresents NO in May of 2009. Modeled surface exchange of NOx in April and May are on the order of 1011 molecules m-2 s-1. Removal of measured downward fluxes of NO and NO2 in measured fluxes resulted in agreement between measured NOx fluxes and modeled surface exchange in April and an order of magnitude deviation in May. Modeled transport of NOx above the snowpack in May shows an order of magnitude increase of NOx fluxes in the first 50 cm of the snowpack and is attributed to the production of NO2 during the day from the thermal decomposition and photolysis of peroxynitric acid with minor contributions of NO from HONO photolysis in the early morning.

OBJECTIVE: To test the null hypotheses: (1) there is no difference in the caries protective effect of ozone and Cervitec/Fluor Protector during multibracket (MB) appliance therapy, and (2) DIAGNOdent and quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) are not superior to a visual evaluation of initial caries lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty right-handed patients with a very poor oral hygiene who required full MB appliance therapy were analyzed during 26 months. In a split-mouth-design, the four quadrants of each patient were either treated with ozone, a combination of Cervitec and Fluor Protector, or served as untreated controls. The visible plaque index (VPI) and white spot formation were analyzed clinically. DIAGNOdent and QLF were used for a quantitative assessment of white spot formation. RESULTS: The average VPI in all four dental arch quadrants amounted to 55.6% and was independent of the preventive measure undertaken. In the quadrants treated with Cervitec/Fluor Protector, only 0.7% of the areas developed new, clinically visible white spots. This was significantly (P < .05) less than in the quadrants treated with ozone (3.2%). The lesions detected with QLF only partially corresponded to the clinically detected white spots, while DIAGNOdent proved to be unable to detect any changes at all. CONCLUSIONS: The caries protective effect of Cervitec/Fluor Protector during MB therapy was superior to ozone, and a visual evaluation of initial caries lesions was superior to both DIAGNOdent and QLF.

Clinical application of ozone gas has been shown to arrest the progression of dentinal caries in children. In this study, we compare the immediate effects of gaseous ozone and chlorhexidine gel on bacteria in cavitated carious lesions in children. Forty children, each with at least two open occlusal carious lesions, were enrolled in the study. Two teeth were chosen randomly. In one lesion, overlying soft biological material was removed, whilst the other lesion was not excavated. Cavities were rinsed with sterile water and dried with air. A standardised sample was taken from the mesial part of each lesion. Then, gaseous ozone (HealOzone) or 1% chlorhexidine gel (Corsodyl) was applied for 30 s on both lesions of 20 children each, and a second sample was taken from the distal part of each lesion. The anaerobic microbiota was cultivated; the number of colony forming units was calculated per milligram sample. The two-sided paired t test showed no significant (P > 0.05) differences in the reduction of total bacterial counts per milligram comparing samples before and after ozone or chlorhexidine application. The tests also showed no statistically significant difference whether the superficial decayed dentine had been removed before ozone or with chlorhexidine treatment or not. It can be concluded that gaseous ozone or chlorhexidine gel application for 30 s to deep occlusal carious cavities had no significant immediate antimicrobial effects whether the superficial decayed layers dentine were removed or not.
