Background: Strategies need to be developed to reduce preschool children’s energy intake.

Objective: To test the effect of reducing the energy density of an entrée on children’s ad libitum energy intake.

Subjects: Subjects were 2- to 5-year-old children (37 boys and 40 girls) in a university day-care facility.

Intervention: In this within-subjects crossover study, children were served a test lunch once per week for 6 weeks. Two versions of a macaroni and cheese entrée were formulated to differ in energy density while maintaining similar palatability. Each version was served to children three times. The higher-energy-density entrée had 2.0 kcal/g and the other entrée was 30% lower in energy density. Lunch, consumed ad libitum, also included broccoli, applesauce, and milk.

Main outcome measures:
Food intake and energy intake were measured.

Statistical analyses: A mixed linear model tested effect of energy density of the entrée on food intake and energy intake. Results are reported as mean±standard error.

Results: Decreasing the energy density of the entrée by 30% significantly (P<0.0001) reduced children’s energy intake from the entrée by 25% (72.3±8.3 kcal) and total lunch energy intake by 18% (71.8±7.9 kcal). Children consumed significantly more of the lower-energy-density entrée (10.1±4.2 g; P<0.05). Children’s sex-specific body mass index–for-age percentiles did not affect the relationship between energy density of the entrée and children’s intakes.

Conclusions: Decreasing the energy density of a lunch entrée resulted in a reduction in children’s energy intake from the entrée and from the total meal. Reducing the energy density of foods may be an effective strategy to moderate children’s energy intake.

Background: Physical inactivity has major impacts on health and productivity. Our aim was to estimate the health and economic benefits of reducing the prevalence of physical inactivity in the 2008 Australian adult population. The economic benefits were estimated as ‘opportunity cost savings’, which represent resources utilized in the treatment of preventable disease that are potentially available for re-direction to another purpose from fewer incident cases of disease occurring in communities.
Methods: Simulation models were developed to show the effect of a 10% feasible, reduction target for physical inactivity from current Australian levels (70%). Lifetime cohort health benefits were estimated as fewer incident cases of inactivity-related diseases; deaths; and Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) by age and sex. Opportunity costs were estimated as health sector cost impacts, as well as paid and unpaid production gains and leisure impacts from fewer disease events associated with reduced physical inactivity. Workforce production gains were estimated by comparing surveyed participation and absenteeism rates of physically active and inactive adults, and valued using the friction cost approach. The impact of an improvement in health status on unpaid household production and leisure time were modeled from time use survey data, as applied to the exposed and non-exposed population subgroups and valued by suitable proxy. Potential costs associated with interventions to increase physical activity were not included. Multivariable uncertainty analyses and univariate sensitivity analyses were undertaken to provide information on the strength of the conclusions.
Results: A 10% reduction in physical inactivity would result in 6,000 fewer incident cases of disease, 2,000 fewer deaths, 25,000 fewer DALYs and provide gains in working days (114,000), days of home-based production (180,000) while conferring a AUD96 million reduction in health sector costs. Lifetime potential opportunity cost savings in workforce production (AUD12 million), home-based production (AUD71 million) and leisure-based production (AUD79 million) was estimated (total AUD162 million 95% uncertainty interval AUD136 million, AUD196 million).
Conclusions: Opportunity cost savings and health benefits conservatively estimated from a reduction in population-level physical inactivity may be substantial. The largest savings will benefit individuals in the form of unpaid production and leisure gains, followed by the health sector, business and government.

Current dietary recommendations advise reducing the intake of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) to reduce coronary heart disease (CHD) risk, but recent findings question the role of SFAs. This expert panel reviewed the evidence and reached the following conclusions: the evidence from epidemiologic, clinical, and mechanistic studies is consistent in finding that the risk of CHD is reduced when SFAs are replaced with polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). In populations who consume a Western diet, the replacement of 1% of energy from SFAs with PUFAs lowers LDL cholesterol and is likely to produce a reduction in CHD incidence of >2–3%. No clear benefit of substituting carbohydrates for SFAs has been shown, although there might be a benefit if the carbohydrate is unrefined and has a low glycemic index. Insufficient evidence exists to judge the effect on CHD risk of replacing SFAs with MUFAs. No clear association between SFA intake relative to refined carbohydrates and the risk of insulin resistance and diabetes has been shown. The effect of diet on a single biomarker is insufficient evidence to assess CHD risk. The combination of multiple biomarkers and the use of clinical endpoints could help substantiate the effects on CHD. Furthermore, the effect of particular foods on CHD cannot be predicted solely by their content of total SFAs because individual SFAs may have different cardiovascular effects and major SFA food sources contain other constituents that could influence CHD risk. Research is needed to clarify the role of SFAs compared with specific forms of carbohydrates in CHD risk and to compare specific foods with appropriate alternatives.

This paper presents findings on parent anxiety and attachment relationship style from the Deakin Family Options (DFO) pilot study, a randomized controlled pilot study comparing a family-based treatment (BEST Plus), versus a youth only treatment (CBT) versus a group who received both of these treatments (COMBINED). Eligible participants were families with a young person (aged 12 - 25 years) with a high prevalence mental health problem. Youth from participating families scored in the clinical or subclinical range for depression, anxiety and/or substance misuse symptoms on standardized measures during the initial assessment. The collected sample was drawn from regional and urban centers in Victoria, Australia and allocated to treatment condition using a simple randomization procedure (parallel design). It was hypothesized that families receiving the BEST Plus would experience greater reductions in youth and parent mental health symptoms, and improved parent-child relationships, compared with those in the CBT condition. This paper describes and discusses changes in parent anxiety and parent attachment, according to whether the parent participated in a treatment (BEST Plus) or did not (NONBEST Plus). Participants were blind to the study hypotheses. In total 71 parent participants returned pre data and were allocated to a treatment group. In this paper, data from parent participants who completed pre and post measures (n = 48) and pre, post, and 6-month follow-up measures (n = 28) on anxiety and attachment were analyzed by group (BEST Plus versus NONBEST Plus). The results of this study suggest that parent anxiety decreased significantly more following parent involvement in a group treatment, than for parents that did not receive treatment. Unexpectedly, avoidant attachment increased in the no treatment group, but remained relatively stable following the BEST Plus group. There were no significant findings in relation to compulsive traits and anxious attachment. These findings are discussed in light of the study limitations.

Research was performed to determine whether it was technically feasible to use boronic acid extractants to purify and concentrate the sugars present in hemicellulose hydrolysates. Initially, five types of boronic acids (phenylboronic acid, 3,5-dimethylphenylboronic acid, 4-tert-butylphenylboronic acid, trans-β-styreneboronic acid or naphthalene-2-boronic acid) dissolved in an organic diluent (Shellsol® 2046 or Exxal® 10) containing the quaternary amine Aliquat® 336 were tested for their ability to extract sugars (fructose, glucose, sucrose and xylose) from a buffered, immiscible aqueous solution. Naphthalene- 2-boronic acid was found to give the greatest extraction of xylose regardless of which diluent was used. Trials were then conducted to extract xylose and glucose from solutions derived from the dilute acid hydrolysis of sugar cane bagasse and to then strip the loaded organic solutions using an aqueous solution containing hydrochloric acid. This produced a strip solution in which the xylose concentration had been increased over 7× that of the original hydrolysate while reducing the concentration of the undesirable acid-soluble lignin by over 90%. Hence, this process can be exploited to produce high concentration xylose solutions suitable for direct fermentation.

Abstract Background: Driving under the influence (DUI) is a major cause of death and disability. Although a broad array of programs designed to curb DUI incidents are currently offered to both first-time and recidivist DUI offenders, existing evaluations of the effectiveness of these programs have reported mixed results. Objective: To synthesize the results of DUI program evaluations and determine the strength of the available evidence for reducing recidivism for different types of programs. Methods: A systematic review of all EBSCO databases, EMBASE, PubMed, ProQuest, Sociological Abstracts and TRIS was conducted to identify evaluations of treatments/interventions to prevent DUI offenses. Additional articles were identified from reference lists of relevant articles. Results: A total of 42 relevant studies were identified by the search strategy. Of these, 33 utilized non-experimental evaluation designs or reported insufficient data to allow effect sizes to be calculated, making meta-analysis unfeasible. Evaluations of several different program types reported evidence of some level of effectiveness. Conclusion: Because of the general lack of high quality evidence assessing the effectiveness of DUI prevention programs, it is not possible to make conclusive statements about the types of programs that are likely to be most effective. Nonetheless, there was some evidence to support the effectiveness of programs that utilize intensive supervision and education. There is a need for future evaluations to adopt more scientifically rigorous research designs to establish the effects of these programs.

Smart micro-grids can produce 'renewable' energy and store them in power storage devices. Power loss, however, is a significant problem in power exchange among the micro-grids and between the macro-station and individual micro-grids. To optimally reduce the total power losses in such a power grid system, in this paper, a greedy coalition formation algorithm is proposed, which allows the macro-station to coordinate mutual power exchange among the micro-grids and between each micro-grid and the macro-station. Our algorithm optimizes the total power losses across the entire power grid, including the cost of charging and discharging power storage devices and power losses due to power transfers. The algorithm creates exchange pairs among the micro-grids, giving priority to pairs with higher power loss reduction per exchanged power unit. Through computer-based simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed approach significantly reduces the average power loss compared with the conventional noncooperative method. The simulations also demonstrate that the communications overhead of our proposal (due to negotiations aimed at forming coalitions) does not significantly affect the available communication resource. © 2014 IEEE.

BACKGROUND: Participation in electronic media use among 2-3 year olds is high and associated with adverse health and developmental outcomes. This study sought to test the feasibility and potential efficacy of a family-based program to decrease electronic media (EM) use in 2-3-year-old children. METHODS: Family@play was a six-session pilot randomised controlled trial delivered to parents of 2-3 year-old children from August to September 2012 in a community environment in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. Development of program content was guided by Social Cognitive and Family Systems Theories. The primary outcome was children's electronic media use. Secondary outcomes included children's time in sitting, standing and stepping. Data collectors were blinded to group allocation. Parents completed comprehensive process evaluation measures and participated in focus group discussions following completion of the program. Regression analyses were undertaken and effect sizes calculated using principles of intention to treat. RESULTS: Twenty-two participants (n = 12 intervention; n = 10 control) provided complete baseline data; complete data from 16 participants (n = 6 intervention; n = 10 control) were available post-intervention. Process evaluation results were high, showing the acceptability of the program. Compared with children in the control group, there were greater decreases in total EM use among children in the intervention group (adjusted difference [95 % CI] = -31.2 mins/day [-71.0-8.6] Cohen's d = 0.70). Differences for other outcomes were in the hypothesised direction and ranged from small for postural (sitting, standing, stepping) outcomes to moderate to large for individual electronic media (e.g. TV viewing, DVD/video viewing). CONCLUSIONS: This is the first family-based study to engage families of 2-3 year old children outside the United States and target multiple EM behaviours. Family@play was shown to be a feasible and acceptable intervention to deliver to families of 2-3 year old children. Potential efficacy is evident from moderate to large effect sizes. Phenolic compounds are one of the most important quality parameters of wines, since they contribute to wine organoleptic characteristics such as colour, astringency, and bitterness. Furthermore, several studies have pointed out that many show biological properties of interest, related to their antioxidant capacity. This antioxidant activity has been thoroughly studied and a wide variety of methods have been developed to evaluate it. In this study, the antioxidant activity of commercial Terras Madeirenses Portuguese wines (Madeira Island) was measured by three different analytical methods: [1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, 2,2′-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTSradical dot+)) radical cation decolourisation, and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) for the evaluation of reducing power (PR) and correlate them with the total phenolic content determined with the Folin–Ciocalteu’s reagent using gallic acid as a standard. The total polyphenol concentration was found to vary from 252 to 1936 mg/l gallic acid equivalents (GAE). The antiradical activity varied from 0.042 to 0.715 mM Trolox equivalents and the antioxidant capacity varied from 344 to 1105 mg/l gallic acid equivalents (GAE). For the reduction power we obtained 3.45–3.86 mM quercetin equivalents.

As principais fontes de amido comercial no mundo são o milho, a batata e a mandioca. Entretanto, nos últimos anos vem crescendo o interesse em amidos naturais que possam ser utilizados pela indústria alimentícia. Assim, este trabalho teve por objetivo caracterizar, quanto à composição físico-química, açafrão, ahipa, araruta, batata-doce, biri, inhame e mandioquinha-salsa, tuberosas amiláceas potencialmente passíveis de introdução como matérias-primas de interesse comercial. Amostras das tuberosas foram analisadas quanto ao teor de umidade, cinzas, proteína, matéria graxa, açúcares redutores e totais, fibras e amido. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que das tuberosas analisadas as que apresentaram maior teor de amido foram a araruta (Maranta arundinacea), o inhame (Dioscorea sp) e o biri (Canna edulis), sendo que o inhame e o biri apresentaram também o maior rendimento potencial em toneladas de amido/hectare.

Avaliou-se o comportamento pós-colheita de pêssegos da cv. Aurora-1 armazenados sob refrigeração. Os frutos foram colhidos em dois estádios de maturação, verde maduro (de vez) e maduro. Os lotes foram armazenados em três temperaturas (2°C; 6°C e 12°C), por 35 dias, e avaliados a cada sete dias: quanto à coloração da casca, perda acumulada de massa fresca (PMF), firmeza (FIR), aparência, teores de acidez titulável (AT), sólidos solúveis (SS), açúcares solúveis (AS) e redutores (AR), pectina solúvel (PS) e total (PT), além da porcentagem de solubilização de pectinas (SOL). A menor temperatura de armazenamento elevou o tempo de prateleira dos pêssegos, e os frutos de vez apresentaram melhor aparência. A PMF demonstrou um gradiente em função do aumento da temperatura, e os frutos de vez apresentaram menor perda ao final do armazenamento sob todas as temperaturas, quando comparados aos maduros. A coloração da casca dos frutos de vez, a 2°C, teve pouca alteração, conferindo-lhes mudança de coloração de verde-amarelada para amarelo-clara; enquanto nas temperaturas de 6°C e 12°C esse gradiente foi mais intenso. O mesmo efeito foi verificado nos pêssegos maduros. A FIR sofreu efeito da temperatura, pois temperaturas menores sofreram redução mais lenta e AT dos pêssegos maduros foi superior aos de vez. Não houve influência dos tratamentos nos teores de SS, AS e AR. Os pêssegos 'Aurora-1' não demonstraram sensibilidade ao frio, e os de vez, armazenados a 2°C, tiveram vida útil de 35 dias.

The aim of this work was to evaluate apples covered with chitosan during storage at ambient temperature. 'Royal Gala' apples were covered with chitosan (MRQ), immersed in acetic acid solution (MB) or did not receive any treatment (MC) and subsequently analyzed physicochemical, sensorial andinstrumentally, as well as for rotten occurrence, at zero, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 and 46 days of storage. The ratio, pH and reducing sugar contents increased while total titratable acidity, total sugars, total solids and firmness were reduced during storage. Was observed a drastically reduction of ascorbic acid and slight increase on soluble solids, except in the apples that were not pretreated (MC). Luminosity and chromaticity ratio values improved with time, with higher intensity in MRQ. Rotten occurrence was not expressive. The acceptance of appearance, color, global impression, aroma and flavor decreased with time, and appearance and texture were considered the most important sensory attributes for apples. The use of chitosan delayed ripening, reduced losses in firmness and presented a more intense bright, extending shelf life period up to seven days.
