A joint analysis of data on the anomalous magnetic field, seismicity, and structures of the Hess deep basalts have allowed to specify propagation of the spreading zone and to correct position of the neovolcanic zone. A precise petrogeochemical analysis of various types of basalts composing the uneven-aged oceanic crust of the basin showed that magmatics of the neovolcanic zone are related to the primitive type in contrast to rift boards of differential basalts. A model of the deep structure of the Galapagos rift in the area of the western Hess Deep has been suggested.

The monograph is devoted to the main results of research on the Trans Indian Ocean Geotraverse from the Maskarene Basin to the north-western margin of Australia. These results were obtained by Russian specialists and together with Indian specialists during 15 years of cooperation in investigation of geological structure and mineral resources of the Indian Ocean. The monograph includes materials on information support of marine geological and geophysical studies, composition and structure of information resources on the Indian Ocean, bathymetry and geomorphology, structure and geological nature of the magnetic field, gravity field, plate tectonics, crustal structure and sedimentary cover, seismic stratigraphy, perspectives for detecting oil and gas, solid minerals, sediment composition, composition and properties of clay minerals, stratigraphy and sediment age, chemical composition of sediments, composition of and prospects for solid minerals.

The monograph gives the first systematic description of ore-bearing guyots from the West Pacific. It is mostly based on data obtained in numerous expeditions of Russian vessels during 1984-1992. Ore deposits located on upper parts of all slopes and tops of the guyots include phosphorites associated with cobalt- and platinum-rich ferromanganese crusts. Location, origin and prospecting of mineral deposits are discussed on the base of new data on metallogenic factors (geodynamics, tectonics, magmatism, sedimentation and morphostructures).

During two Antarctic field seasons, western Dronning Maud Land and eastern Coats Land were covered by airborne radio-echo sounding surveys, conducted in combination with magnetic and gravity measurements along the 50 NW-SE-directed tracks, totaling about 11200 km and spaced 20 km apart. The data were collected in analogue form and then processed to compile ice surface, ice thickness and bedrock topography maps in I : 2 500 000 scale which gave a new and/or more detailed information on the region than previous compilations. The maps show that western Dronning Maud Land is dominated by a large mountainous area with altitudes up to 2800 m including rock outcrops of Annandagstoppane, Borgmassivet, Kirwanveggen and Heimefrontfjella. Upland terrains of Vestfjella and Mannefallknausane have an isolated position and are surrounded by a plain with bedrock depressions of 600 m deep below sea level. A narrow strip of north-eastern Coats Land studied by radio-echo soundings exhibits a smooth subice relief with altitudes close to sea level. The structural style of bedrock topography was mostly determined by extensional tectonics.

The 'Paleocene/Eocene Thermal Maximum' or PETM (~55 Ma) was associated with dramatic warming of the oceans and atmosphere, pronounced changes in ocean circulation and chemistry, and upheaval of the global carbon cycle. Many relatively complete PETM sequences have by now been reported from around the world, but most are from ancient low- to midlatitude sites. ODP Leg 189 in the Tasman Sea recovered sediments from this critical phase in Earth history at Sites 1171 and 1172, potentially representing the southernmost PETM successions ever encountered (at ~70° to 65° S paleolatitude). Downhole and core logging data, in combination with dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy, magneto-stratigraphy, and stable isotope geochemistry indicate that the sequences at both sites were deposited in a high accumulation-rate, organic rich, marginal marine setting. Furthermore, Site 1172 indeed contains a fairly complete P-E transition, whereas at Site 1171, only the lowermost Eocene is recovered. However, at Site 1172, the typical PETM-indicative acme of the dinocyst Apectodinium was not recorded. We conclude that unfortunately, the critical latest Paleocene and PETM intervals are missing at Site 1172. We relate the missing section to a sea level driven hiatus and/or condensed section and recovery problems. Nevertheless, our integrated records provide a first-ever portrait of the trend toward, and aftermath of, the PETM in a marginal marine, southern high-latitude setting.

Upper Jurassic calcareous nannofossil assemblages have been studied from strata cored over basement blocks now buried under the Iberia Abyssal Plain (Ocean Drilling Program Leg 173 Sites 1065 and 1069). The youngest Jurassic assemblages at each site are Tithonian in age, the same as those at nearby Leg 149 Site 901, an age that predates the breakup of the Iberia continental margin. The paucity of the assemblages, the prevalence of coccospheres, and the relatively high organic contents of the fine clastic sediments in which they occur are characteristic of a restricted interior basin that had little communication with the open ocean. During the major rifting episode (a Berriasian event), the Jurassic sequences were dispersed along with their underlying blocks of presumed continental crust across the ocean-continent transition of the Iberia Abyssal Plain, probably as a result of detachment faulting.

In the collective monograph results of geological and geophysical studies in the Tadjura Rift carried out by conventional outboard instruments and from deep/sea manned submersibles "Pisces" in winter 1983-1984 are reported. Main features of rift tectonics, geology, petrology, and geochemistry of basalts from the rift are under consideration. An emphasis is made on lithology, stratigraphy, and geochemistry of bottom sediments. Roles of terrigenous, edafogenic, biogenic, and hydrothermal components in formation of bottom sediments from the rift zone are shown.
