The displacement between the ridges situated outside the filleted test section of an axially loaded unnotched specimen is computed from the axial load and shape of the specimen and compared with extensometer deflection data obtained from experiments. The effect of prestrain on the extensometer deflection versus specimen strain curve has been studied experimentally and analytically. An analytical study shows that an increase in the slope of the stress-strain curve in the inelastic region increases the slope of the corresponding computed extensometer deflection versus specimen strain curve. A mathematical model has been developed which uses a modified length ¯ℓef in place of the actual length of the uniform diameter test section of the specimen. This model predicts the extensometer deflection within 5% of the corresponding experimental value. This method has been successfully used by the authors to evolve an iterative procedure for predicting the cyclic specimen strain in axial fatigue tests on unnotched specimens.

The evolution of crystallographic texture in polycrystalline copper and nickel has been studied. The deformation texture evolution in these two materials over seven orders of magnitude of strain rate from 3 x 10(-4) to similar to 2.0 x 10(+3) s(-1) show little dependence on the stacking fault energy (SFE) and the amount of deformation. Higher strain rate deformation in nickel leads to weakerh < 101 > texture because of extensive microband formation and grain fragmentation. This behavior, in turn, causes less plastic spin and hence retards texture evolution. Copper maintains the stable end < 101 > component over large strain rates (from 3 x 10(-4) to 10(+2) s(-1)) because of its higher strain-hardening rate that resists formation of deformation heterogeneities. At higher strain rates of the order of 2 x 10(+3) s(-1), the adiabatic temperature rise assists in continuous dynamic recrystallization that leads to an increase in the volume fraction of the < 101 > component. Thus, strain-hardening behavior plays a significant role in the texture evolution of face-centered cubic materials. In addition, factors governing the onset of restoration mechanisms like purity and melting point govern texture evolution at high strain rates. SFE may play a secondary role by governing the propensity of cross slip that in turn helps in the activation of restoration processes.

Wettability gradient surfaces play a significant role in control and manipulation of liquid drops. The present work deals with the analysis of water drops impacting onto the junction line between hydrophobic texture and hydrophilic smooth portions of a dual-textured substrate made using stainless steel material. The hydrophobic textured portion of the substrate comprised of unidirectional parallel groove-like and pillar-like structures of uniform dimensions. A high-speed video camera recorded the spreading and receding dynamics of impacting drops. The drop impact dynamics during the early inertia driven impact regime remains unaffected by the dual-texture feature of the substrate. A larger retraction speed of drop liquid observed on the hydrophobic portion of the substrate during the impact of low velocity drops makes the drop liquid on the higher wettability portion to advance further (secondary drop spreading). The net horizontal drop velocity towards the hydrophilic portion of the dual-textured substrate decreases with increasing drop impact velocity. The available experimental results suggest that the movement of bulk drop liquid away from the impact point during drop impact on the dual-textured substrate is larger for the impact of low inertia drops. Generation of raw materials for dry powder inhalers by different size reduction methods can be expected to influence physical and chemical properties of the powders. This can cause differences in particle size, size distribution, shape, crystalline properties, surface texture and energy. These physical properties of powders influence the behaviour of particles before and after inhalation. Materials with an amorphous surface have different surface energy compared to materials with crystalline surface. This can affect the adhesion and cohesion of particles. Changes in the surface nature of the drug particles results in a change in product performance. By stabilization of the raw materials the amorphous surfaces are converted into crystalline surfaces. The primary aim of the study was to investigate the influence of the surface properties of the inhalation particles on the quality of the product. The quality of the inhalation product is evaluated by measuring the fine particle dose (FPD). FDP is the total dose of particles with aerodynamic diameters smaller than 5,0 μm. The secondary aim of this study was to achieve the target level of the FPD and the stability of the FPD. This study was also used to evaluate the importance of the stabilization of the inhalation powders. The study included manufacturing and analysing drug substance 200 μg/dose inhalation powder batches using non-stabilized or stabilized raw materials. The inhaler formulation consisted of micronized drug substance, lactose <100μm and micronized lactose <10μm. The inhaler device was Easyhaler®. Stabilization of the raw materials was done in different relative humidity, temperature and time. Surface properties of the raw materials were studied by dynamic vapour sorption, scanning electron microscopy and three-point nitrogen adsorption technique. Particle size was studied by laser diffraction particle size analyzer. Aerodynamic particle size distribution from inhalers was measured by new generation impactor. Stabilization of all three raw materials was successful. A clear difference between nonstabilized and stabilized raw materials was achieved for drug substance and lactose <10μm. However for lactose <100μm the difference wasn’t as clear as wanted. The surface of the non-stabilized drug substance was more irregular and the particles had more roughness on the surface compared to the stabilized drug substances particles surface. The surface of the stabilized drug particles was more regular and smoother than non-stabilized. Even though a good difference between stabilized and non-stabilized raw materials was achieved, a clear evidence of the effect of the surface properties of the inhalation particles on the quality of the product was not observed. Stabilization of the raw materials didn’t lead to a higher FPD. Possible explanations for the unexpected result might be too rough conditions in the stabilization of the drug substance or smaller than wanted difference in the degree of stabilization of the main component of the product <100μm. Despite positive effects on the quality of the product were not seen there appears to be some evidence that stabilized drug substance results in smaller particle size of dry powder inhalers.

In voiced speech analysis epochal information is useful in accurate estimation of pitch periods and the frequency response of the vocal tract system. Ideally, linear prediction (LP) residual should give impulses at epochs. However, there are often ambiguities in the direct use of LP residual since samples of either polarity occur around epochs. Further, since the digital inverse filter does not compensate the phase response of the vocal tract system exactly, there is an uncertainty in the estimated epoch position. In this paper we present an interpretation of LP residual by considering the effect of the following factors: 1) the shape of glottal pulses, 2) inaccurate estimation of formants and bandwidths, 3) phase angles of formants at the instants of excitation, and 4) zeros in the vocal tract system. A method for the unambiguous identification of epochs from LP residual is then presented. The accuracy of the method is tested by comparing the results with the epochs obtained from the estimated glottal pulse shapes for several vowel segments. The method is used to identify the closed glottis interval for the estimation of the true frequency response of the vocal tract system.

Langevin dynamics simulation studies have been employed to calculate the temperature dependent free energy surface and folding characteristics of a 500 monomer long linear alkane (polyethylene) chain with a realistic interaction potential. Both equilibrium and temperature quench simulation studies have been carried out. Using the shape anisotropy parameter (S) of the folded molecule as the order parameter, we find a weakly first order phase transition between the high-temperature molten globule and low-temperature rodlike crystalline states separated by a small barrier of the order of k(B)T. Near the melting temperature (580 K), we observe an intriguing intermittent fluctuation with pronounced ``1/f noise characteristics'' between these two states with large difference in shape and structure. We have also studied the possibilities of different pathways of folding to states much below the melting point. At 300 K starting from the all-trans linear configuration, the chain folds stepwise into a very regular fourfold crystallite with very high shape anisotropy. Whereas, when quenched from a high temperature (900 K) random coil regime, we identify a two step transition from the random coiled state to a molten globulelike state and, further, to a anisotropic rodlike state. The trajectory reveals an interesting coupling between the two order parameters, namely, radius of gyration (R-g) and the shape anisotropy parameter (S). The rodlike final state of the quench trajectory is characterized by lower shape anisotropy parameter and significantly larger number of gauche defects as compared to the final state obtained through equilibrium simulation starting from all-trans linear chain. The quench study shows indication of a nucleationlike pathway from the molten globule to the rodlike state involving an underlying rugged energy landscape. To investigate the nature of the curve of critical exponents (as a function of the distance from a double critical point), we have combined our measurements of the osmotic compressibility with all published data for quasibinary liquid mixtures. This curve has a parabolic shape. An explanation of this result is advanced in terms of the geometry of the coexistence dome, which is contained in a triangular prism.
Texture evolution and operative mechanisms during large-strain deformation of nanocrystalline nickel
Resumo:
The large-strain deformation of nanocrystalline nickel was investigated at room temperature and cryogenic (liquid N-2) temperature. Deformation mechanisms ranging from grain boundary sliding to slip, operate due to a wide distribution of grain sizes. These mechanisms leave their finger print in the deformation texture evolution during rolling of nanocrystalline nickel. The occurrence and severance of different mechanisms is understood by a thorough characterization of the deformed samples using X-ray diffraction, X-ray texture measurements, electron back-scattered diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Crystal plasticity-based viscoplastic self-consistent simulations were used to further substantiate the experimental observations. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of deformation behavior of nanocrystalline nickel, which is characterized by simultaneous operation of dislocation-dominated and grain boundary-mediated mechanisms, has been developed.

NiTi thin films deposited by DC magnetron sputtering of an alloy (Ni/Ti:45/55) target at different deposition rates and substrate temperatures were analyzed for their structure and mechanical properties. The crystalline structure, phase-transformation and mechanical response were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Nano-indentation techniques, respectively. The films were deposited on silicon substrates maintained at temperatures in the range 300 to 500 degrees C and post-annealed at 600 degrees C for four hours to ensure film crystallinity. Films deposited at 300 degrees C and annealed for 600 degrees C have exhibited crystalline behavior with Austenite phase as the prominent phase. Deposition onto substrates held at higher deposition temperatures (400 and 500 degrees C) resulted in the co-existence of Austenite phase along with Martensite phase. The increase in deposition rates corresponding to increase in cathode current from 250 to 350 mA has also resulted in the appearance of Martensite phase as well as improvement in crystallinity. XRD analysis revealed that the crystalline film structure is strongly influenced by process parameters such as substrate temperature and deposition rate. DSC results indicate that the film deposited at 300 degrees C had its crystallization temperature at 445 degrees C in the first thermal cycle, which is further confirmed by stress temperature response. In the second thermal cycle the Austenite and Martensite transitions were observed at 75 and 60 degrees C respectively. However, the films deposited at 500 degrees C had the Austenite and Martensite transitions at 73 and 58 degrees C, respectively. Elastic modulus and hardness values increased from 93 to 145 GPa and 7.2 to 12.6 GPa, respectively, with increase in deposition rates. These results are explained on the basis of change in film composition and crystallization. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd

The effect of growth texture on the magnetostriction of ternary Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.95 was studied by conducting unidirectional solidification experiments using a zoning set-up. Detailed texture evolutions were studied using X-ray diffraction on samples obtained by varying growth rates from 18 to 72 cm/h, under a temperature gradient of 100 degrees C/cm. The estimated texture co-efficient and pole figures of the samples indicate that during the onset of the solidification, < 110 > and < 331 >/'rotated < 110 >' texture components nucleate and grow in all the samples. However, as the solidification progresses, < 112 > texture component becomes dominant at higher growth rate. This results in an improvement of magnetostriction from 1000 to 1300 microstrains for samples grown at growth rates of 18 and 72 cm/h respectively. The transition of preferred growth direction occurs through intermediate orientations < 123 >. An attempt has been made in this paper to explain the occurrence of different growth texture by considering the stability of growing interface, its planar packing fraction and atomic stacking sequence of several low index planes. Owing to their high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, titanium (Ti) and its alloys, especially (alpha+beta) alloys like Ti-6Al-4V is the backbone materials for aerospace, energy, and chemical industries. Trace boron addition (similar to 0.1 wt. %) to the alloy Ti-6Al-4V produces a reduction in as-cast grain size by roughly an order of magnitude resulting in enhanced ductility, higher stiffness, strength and good fracture resistance. Boron addition could also affect the evolution of texture and microstructure in the material. The solidification microstructures of Boron free as well as Boron containing Ti-6Al-4V are found to be almost homogeneous from periphery towards the center of as-cast ingot in terms of both alpha-colony size and distribution. Boron addition substantially reduces alpha-colony size (similar to 50-80 mu m). A gradual change in alpha texture from periphery towards the center has been observed with orientations close to specific texture components suggesting the formation of texture zones. The mechanism of texture evolution can be visualized as a result of variant selection during solidification through (alpha+beta) phase field.

Texture evolution in h. c. p. (alpha) phase derived from aging of a differently processed metastable b.c.c. (beta) titanium alloy was investigated. The study was aimed at examining (i) the effect of different b. c. c. cold rolling textures and (ii) the effect of different defect structures on the h. c. p transformation texture. The alloy metastable beta alloy Ti-10V-4.5Fe-1.5Al was rolled at room temperature by unidirectional (UDR) and multi-step cross rolling (MSCR). A piece of the as-rolled materials were subjected to aging in order to derive the h. c. p. (alpha) phase. In the other route, the as-rolled materials were recrystallized and then aged. Textures were measured using X-ray as well as Electron Back Scatter Diffraction. Rolling texture of beta phase, as characterized by the presence of a strong gamma fibre, was found stronger in M S C R compared to UDR, although they were qualitatively similar. The stronger texture of MSCR sample could be attributed to the inhomogeneous deformation taking place in the sample that might contribute to weakening of texture. Upon recrystallization in beta phase field close to beta-transus. the textures qualitatively resembled the corresponding beta deformation textures; however, they got strengthed. The aging of differently beta rolled samples resulted in the product alpha-phase with different textures. The (UDR + Aged) sample had a stronger texture than (MSCR + Aged) sample, which could be due to continuation of defect accumulation in UDR sample, thus providing more potential sites for the nucleation of alpha phase. The trend was reversed in samples recrystallized prior to aging. The (MSCR + Recrystallized + Aged) sample showed stronger texture of alpha phase than the (UDR + Recrystallized + Aged) sample. This could be attributed to extensive defect annihilation in the UDR sample on recrystallization prior to aging. The (MSCR + Aged) sample exhibited more alpha variants when compared to (MSCR + Recrystallized + Aged) sample. This has been attributed to the availability of more potential sites for nucleation of alpha phase in the former. It could be concluded that alpha transformation texture depends mainly on the defect structure of the parent phase.

Three classification techniques, namely, K-means Cluster Analysis (KCA), Fuzzy Cluster Analysis (FCA), and Kohonen Neural Networks (KNN) were employed to group 25 microwatersheds of Kherthal watershed, Rajasthan into homogeneous groups for formulating the basis for suitable conservation and management practices. Ten parameters, mainly, morphological, namely, drainage density (D-d), bifurcation ratio (R-b), stream frequency (F-u), length of overland flow (L-o), form factor (R-f), shape factor (B-s), elongation ratio (R-e), circulatory ratio (R-c), compactness coefficient (C-c) and texture ratio (T) are used for the classification. Optimal number of groups is chosen, based on two cluster validation indices Davies-Bouldin and Dunn's. Comparative analysis of various clustering techniques revealed that 13 microwatersheds out of 25 are commonly suggested by KCA, FCA and KNN i.e., 52%; 17 microwatersheds out of 25 i.e., 68% are commonly suggested by KCA and FCA whereas these are 16 out of 25 in FCA and KNN (64%) and 15 out of 25 in KNN and CA (60%). It is observed from KNN sensitivity analysis that effect of various number of epochs (1000, 3000, 5000) and learning rates (0.01, 0.1-0.9) on total squared error values is significant even though no fixed trend is observed. Sensitivity analysis studies revealed that microwatershecls have occupied all the groups even though their number in each group is different in case of further increase in the number of groups from 5 to 6, 7 and 8. Radially homogeneous bulk alloys of GaxIn1-xSb in the range 0.7 < x < 0.8, have been grown by vertical Bridgman technique. The factors affecting the interface shape during the growth were optimised to achieve zero convexity. From a series of experiments, a critical ratio of the temperature gradient (G) of the furnace at the melting point of the melt composition to the ampoule lowering speed (v) was deduced for attaining the planarity of the melt-solid interface. The studies carried out on directional solidification of Ga0.77In0.23Sb mixed crystals employing planar melt-solid interface exhibited superior quality than those with nonplanar interfaces. The solutions to certain problems encountered during the synthesis and growth of the compound were discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this article, the effect of initial microstructure on the texture evolution in 2014 Al alloy during equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) through route A has been reported. Three heat treatment conditions were chosen to generate the initial microstructures, namely (i) the recrystallization anneal (as-received), (ii) solution treatment at 768 K for 1 h, and (iii) solution treatment (768 K for 1 h) plus aging at 468 K for 5 h. Texture analyses were performed using orientation distribution function (ODF) method. The texture strength after ECAP processing was different for the three samples in the order, solutionised > solutionised plus aged condition > as-received. The prominent texture components were A (E) /(A) over bar (E) and B(E)/(B) over bar (E) in addition to several weaker components for the three materials. The strong texture evolution in solutionised condition has been attributed to higher strain hardening of the matrix due to higher amount of solute. In case of the as-received as well as solutionised plus aged alloy, the weaker texture could be due to the strain scattering from extensive precipitate fragmentation and dissolution during ECAP.
