We report inelastic light scattering experiments on superconductor Ce0.6Y0.4FeAsO0.8F0.2 from 4K to 300K covering the superconducting transition temperature T-c similar to 48.6K. A strong evidence of the superconductivity induced phonon renormalization for the A(1g) phonon mode near 150cm(-1) associated with the Ce/Y vibrations is observed as reflected in the anomalous red-shift and decrease in the linewidth below T-c. Invoking the coupling of this mode with the superconducting gap, the superconducting gap (2 Delta) at zero temperature is estimated to be similar to 20meV i.e the ratio 2 Delta(0)/k(B)T(c) is similar to 5, suggesting Ce0.6Y0.4FeAsO0.8F0.2 to belong to the class of strong coupling superconductors. In addition, the mode near 430cm(-1) associated with Ce3+ crystal field excitation also shows anomalous increase in its linewidth below T-c suggesting strong coupling between crystal field excitation and the superconducting quasi-particles.

The GW approximation to the electron self-energy has become a standard method for ab initio calculation of excited-state properties of condensed-matter systems. In many calculations, the G W self-energy operator, E, is taken to be diagonal in the density functional theory (DFT) Kohn-Sham basis within the G0 W0 scheme. However, there are known situations in which this diagonal Go Wo approximation starting from DFT is inadequate. We present two schemes to resolve such problems. The first, which we called sc-COHSEX-PG W, involves construction of an improved mean field using the static limit of GW, known as COHSEX (Coulomb hole and screened exchange), which is significantly simpler to treat than GW W. In this scheme, frequency-dependent self energy E(N), is constructed and taken to be diagonal in the COHSEX orbitals after the system is solved self-consistently within this formalism. The second method is called off diagonal-COHSEX G W (od-COHSEX-PG W). In this method, one does not self-consistently change the mean-field starting point but diagonalizes the COHSEX Hamiltonian within the Kohn-Sham basis to obtain quasiparticle wave functions and uses the resulting orbitals to construct the G W E in the diagonal form. We apply both methods to a molecular system, silane, and to two bulk systems, Si and Ge under pressure. For silane, both methods give good quasiparticle wave functions and energies. Both methods give good band gaps for bulk silicon and maintain good agreement with experiment. Further, the sc-COHSEX-PGW method solves the qualitatively incorrect DFT mean-field starting point (having a band overlap) in bulk Ge under pressure.

The combustion of oxidizer zinc nitrate and fuel oxalic acid results in quasi-fibrous zinc oxide. The processing parameters including oxidizer to fuel ratio, time and temperature were optimized for the resultant crystal structure and morphology. Pure hexagonal phase formation does not depend on the fuel ratio, but a stoichiometric ratio of oxidizer to fuel at 450 degrees C and 30 min results in highly crystalline ZnO with 3 mu m length and 0.5 mu m width. This quasi-fiber originates from partial fusion of near spherical, similar to 60 nm particles during the rapid rate of reaction in the combustion process. Transmission electron microscopic analysis confirms the anisotropic primary particle orientation and pore distribution within the developed quasi-fibrous particles. The degradation of methyl orange was assessed by degrading the dye in the presence of the synthesized ZnO (2.95 eV) under both UV and visible light. Quasi-fibrous zinc oxide exhibits effective photocatalytic efficiency under visible light irradiation.

The ultimate bearing capacity of a circular footing, placed over rock mass, is evaluated by using the lower bound theorem of the limit analysis in conjunction with finite elements and nonlinear optimization. The generalized Hoek-Brown (HB) failure criterion, but by keeping a constant value of the exponent, alpha = 0.5, was used. The failure criterion was smoothened both in the meridian and pi planes. The nonlinear optimization was carried out by employing an interior point method based on the logarithmic barrier function. The results for the obtained bearing capacity were presented in a non-dimensional form for different values of GSI, m(i), sigma(ci)/(gamma b) and q/sigma(ci). Failure patterns were also examined for a few cases. For validating the results, computations were also performed for a strip footing as well. The results obtained from the analysis compare well with the data reported in literature. Since the equilibrium conditions are precisely satisfied only at the centroids of the elements, not everywhere in the domain, the obtained lower bound solution will be approximate not true. In this article, we look at the political business cycle problem through the lens of uncertainty. The feedback control used by us is the famous NKPC with stochasticity and wage rigidities. We extend the New Keynesian Phillips Curve model to the continuous time stochastic set up with an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. We minimize relevant expected quadratic cost by solving the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation. The basic intuition of the classical model is qualitatively carried forward in our set up but uncertainty also plays an important role in determining the optimal trajectory of the voter support function. The internal variability of the system acts as a base shifter for the support function in the risk neutral case. The role of uncertainty is even more prominent in the risk averse case where all the shape parameters are directly dependent on variability. Thus, in this case variability controls both the rates of change as well as the base shift parameters. To gain more insight we have also studied the model when the coefficients are time invariant and studied numerical solutions. The close relationship between the unemployment rate and the support function for the incumbent party is highlighted. The role of uncertainty in creating sampling fluctuation in this set up, possibly towards apparently anomalous results, is also explored.

The derivation of a quasi-geostrophic system from the rotating shallow-water equations on a midlatitude -plane coupled with moisture is presented. Condensation is prescribed to occur whenever the moisture at a point exceeds a prescribed saturation value. It is seen that a slow condensation time-scale is required to obtain a consistent set of equations at leading order. Further, since the advecting wind fields are geostrophic, changes in moisture (and hence precipitation) occur only via non-divergent mechanisms. Following observations, a saturation profile with gradients in the zonal and meridional directions is prescribed. A purely meridional gradient has the effect of slowing down the dry Rossby waves, through a reduction in the equivalent gradient' of the background potential vorticity. A large-scale unstable moist mode results on the inclusion of a zonal gradient by itself, or in conjunction with a meridional moisture gradient. For gradients that are are representative of the atmosphere, the most unstable moist mode propagates zonally in the direction of increasing moisture, matures over an intraseasonal time-scale and has small phase speed.

A discussion has been provided for the comments raised by the discusser (Clausen, 2015)1] on the article recently published by the authors (Chakraborty and Kumar, 2015). The effect of exponent alpha for values of GSI approximately smaller than 30 becomes more critical. On the other hand, for greater values of GSI, the results obtained by the authors earlier remain primarily independent of alpha and can be easily used. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper reveals an early quasi-saturation (QS) effect attributed to the geometrical parameters in shallow trench isolation-type drain-extended MOS (STI-DeMOS) transistors in advanced CMOS technologies. The quasi-saturation effect leads to serious g(m) reduction in STI-DeMOS. This paper investigates the nonlinear resistive behavior of the drain-extended region and its impact on the particular behavior of the STI-DeMOS transistor. In difference to vertical DMOS or lateral DMOS structures, STI-DeMOS exhibits three distinct regions of the drain extension. A complete understanding of the physics in these regions and their impact on the QS behavior are developed in this paper. An optimization strategy is shown for an improved g(m) device in a state-of-the-art 28-nm CMOS technology node.

Potential energy can be approximated by ‘‘pair-functional’’ potentials which is composed of pair potentials and embedding energy. Pair potentials are grouped according to discrete directions of atomic bonds such that each group is represented by an orientational component. Meanwhile, another kind of component, the volumetric one is derived from embedding energy. Damage and fracture are the changing and breaking of atomic bonds at the most fundamental level and have been reflected by the changing of these components’ properties. Therefore, material is treated as a component assembly, and its constitutive equations are formed by means of assembling these two kinds of components’ response functions. This material model is referred to as the component assembling model. Theoretical analysis and numerical computing indicate that the proposed model has the capacity of reproducing some results satisfactorily, with the advantages of physical explicitness and intrinsic induced anisotropy, etc.
