The ion-exchange equilibrium of bovine serum albumin (BSA) to an anion exchanger, DEAE Spherodex M, has been studied by batch adsorption experiments at pH values ranging from 5.26 to 7.6 and ionic strengths from 10 to 117.1 mmol/l. Using the unadjustable adsorption equilibrium parameters obtained from batch experiments, the applicability of the steric mass-action (SMA) model was analyzed for describing protein ion-exchange equilibrium in different buffer systems. The parametric sensitivity analysis was performed by perturbing each of the model parameters, while holding the rest constant. The simulation results showed that, at high salt concentrations or low pHs close to the isoelectric point of the protein, the precision of the model prediction decreased. Parametric sensitivity analysis showed that the characteristic charge and protein steric factor had the largest effects on ion-exchange equilibrium, while the effect of equilibrium constant was about 70%-95% smaller than those of characteristic charge and steric factor under all conditions investigated. The SMA model with the relationship between the adjusted characteristic charge and the salt concentration can well predict the protein adsorption isotherms in a wide pH range from 5.84 to 7.6. It is considered that the SMA model could be further improved by taking into account the effect of salt concentration on the intermolecular interactions of proteins. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Nanocrystalline Ge:H thin films were deposited simultaneously on both electrodes of a conventional capacitively coupled reactor for plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition using highly H-2 diluted GeH4 as the source gas. The structure of the films was investigated by Raman scattering and X-ray diffraction as a function of substrate temperature, H-2 dilution, and r.f. power. The hydrogen concentrations and bonding configurations were determined by infrared absorption spectroscopy. For anodic deposition, the preferred crystallographic orientation and film crystallinity depend rather strongly on the deposition parameters. This dependence can be explained by changing surface mobilities of adsorbed precursors due to changes in the hydrogen coverage of the growing surface. Cathodic deposition is much less sensitive to variations in the deposition parameters. It generally results in films of high crystallinity with randomly oriented crystallizes. Some possible mechanisms for these differences between anodic and cathodic deposition are discussed. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

A buoy as an offshore structure is often placed over a convex such as a caisson or a submerged island. The hydrodynamic fluid/solid interaction becomes more complex due to the convex compared with that on the flat. Both the buoy and the convex are idealized as vertical cylinders. Linear potential theory is used to investigate the response amplitude and the hydrodynamic force for a buoy over a convex due to diffraction and radiation in water of finite depth. These are derived from the total velocity potential. A set of theoretical added mass, damping coefficient, and exciting force expressions have been proposed. Analytical results of the response amplitude and hydrodynamic force are given. Finally, the numerical results show that the effect of the convex on the response amplitude and hydrodynamic force for the buoy is ignored if the size of the convex is relatively smaller.

This study experimentally explored the fine structures of the successive period-doubling bifurcations of the time-dependent thermocapillary convection in a floating half zone of 10 cSt silicone oil with the diameter d (0)=3.00 mm and the aspect ratio A=l/d (0)=0.72 in terrestrial conditions. The onset of time-dependent thermocapillary convection predominated in this experimental configuration and its subsequent evolution were experimentally detected through the local temperature measurements. The experimental results revealed a sequence of period-doubling bifurcations of the time-dependent thermocapillary convection, similar in some way to one of the routes to chaos for buoyant natural convection. The critical frequencies and the corresponding fractal frequencies were extracted through the real-time analysis of the frequency spectra by Fast-Fourier-Transformation (FFT). The projections of the trajectory onto the reconstructed phase-space were also provided. Furthermore, the experimentally predicted Feigenbaum constants were quite close to the theoretical asymptotic value of 4.669 [Feigenbaum M J. Phys Lett A, 1979, 74: 375-378].

Recently a new method for simulating the thermal loading on pistons of diesel engines was reported. The spatially shaped high power laser is employed as the heat source, and some preliminary experimental and numerical work was carried out. In this paper, a further effort was made to extend this simulation method to some other important engine parts such as cylinder heads. The incident Gaussian beam was transformed into concentric multi-circular patterns of specific intensity distributions, with the aid of diffractive optical elements (DOEs). By incorporating the appropriate repetitive laser pulses, the designed transient temperature fields and thermal loadings in the engine parts could be simulated. Thermal-structural numerical models for pistons and cylinder heads were built to predict the transient temperature and thermal stress. The models were also employed to find the optimal intensity distributions of the transformed laser beam that could produce the target transient temperature fields. Comparison of experimental and numerical results demonstrated that this systematic approach is effective in simulating the thermal loading on the engine parts. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd.
