Sparingly soluble neodymium copper oxalate (NCO) single crystals were grown by gel method, by the diffusion of a mixture of neodymium nitrate and cupric nitrate into the set gel containing oxalic acid. Tabular crystal, revealing well-defined dissolution figures has been recorded. X-ray diffraction studies of the powdered sample reveal that NCO is crystalline. Infrared absorption spectrum confirmed the formation of oxalato complex with water of crystallization, while energy dispersive X-ray analysis established the presence of neodymium dominant over copper in the sample. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies established the presence of Nd and Cu in oxide states besides (C2O4)(2-) oxalate group. The intensities of Nd (3d(5/2)) and Cu (2p(3/2)) peaks measured in terms of maximum photoelectron count rates also revealed the presence of Nd in predominance. The inductively coupled plasma analysis supports the EDAX and XPS data by the estimation of neodymium percentage by weight to that of copper present in the NCO sample. On the basis of these findings, an empirical structure for NCO has been proposed. The implications are discussed.

The as-deposited and annealed radio frequency reactive magnetron sputtered tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) films were characterized by studying the chemical binding configuration, structural and electrical properties. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis of the films elucidate that the film annealed at 673 K was stoichiometric with orthorhombic beta-phase Ta2O5. The dielectric constant values of the tantalum oxide capacitors with the sandwich structure of Al/Ta2O5/Si were in the range from 14 to 26 depending on the post-deposition annealing temperature. The leakage current density was < 20 nA cm(-2) at the gate bias voltage of 0.04 MV/cm for the annealed films. The electrical conduction mechanism observed in the films was Poole-Frenkel. Interaction of CO with Cu clusters deposited on a ZnO(0001) crystal and on ZnO/Zn surfaces (prepared in the electron spectrometer) has been examined by UV and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The interaction is stronger with the small Cu clusters deposited on ZnO/Zn surfaces. Interaction of CO is evert stronger with annealed Cu/ZnO/Zn surfaces where Cu-Zn alloy particles are present. Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) thin films as solid electrolytes were prepared by reactive radio frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering from Li3PO4 powder compact target. High deposition rates and ease of manufacturing powder target compared with conventional ceramic Li3PO4 targets offer flexibility in handling and reduce the cost associated. Rf power density varied from 1.7 Wcm(-2) to 3 Wcm(-2) and N-2 flow from 10 to 30 sccm for a fixed substrate to target distance of 4 cm for best ionic conductivity. The surface chemical analysis done by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed incorporation of nitrogen into the film as both triply, NE and doubly. Nd coordinated form. With increased presence of NE, ionic conductivity of LiPON was found to be increasing. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of LiPON films confirmed an ionic conductivity of 1.1 x 10(-6) Scm(-1) for optimum rf power and N-2 flow conditions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Bremsstrahlung isochromat spectroscopy (BIS) along with ultraviolet and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS and XPS) has been employed to investigate the electron states of Pd and Ag deposited on amorphous graphite at different coverages. The metal core level binding energies increase with decreasing cluster size while the UPS valence bands show a decrease in the 4d states at E(F) accompanied by a shift in the intensity maximum to higher binding energies. BIS measurements show the emergence of new states closer to E(F) with increase in the cluster size. It is pointed out that the observed spectral shifts cannot be accounted for by final-state effects alone and that initial-state effects have a significant role. It therefore appears that a decrease in cluster size is accompanied by a metal-insulator transition.

Tetragonal ZrO2 was synthesized by the solution combustion technique using glycine as the fuel. The compound was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and BET surface area analysis. The ability of this compound to adsorb dyes was investigated, and the compound had a higher adsorption capacity than commercially activated carbon. Infrared spectroscopic observations were used to determine the various interactions and the groups responsible for the adsorption activity of the compound. The effects of the initial concentration of the dye, temperature, adsorbent concentration, and pH of the solution were studied. The kinetics of adsorption was described as a first-order process, and the relative magnitudes of internal and external mass transfer processes were determined. The equilibrium adsorption was also determined and modeled by a composite Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm.

Zinc oxide ceramic varistors with simplified compositions of ZnO+Bi2O3+Co3O4+M(2)O (M=K or Na) show nonlinearity coefficients (alpha) of 40-75. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectra and optical reflectance spectra show that there is a direct interdependence between the oxidation state of transition metals and the alkali ions. The X-ray photoelectron spectra indicate that the alkali ions preserve a higher oxidation state of cobalt, Co(III), in the grain boundary regions than in the grain interiors having more Co(II). Admittance spectroscopy shows that, while the nature of traps remains unaltered, the trap density increases with the concentration of alkali ions near the interface. The observed defect states are associated with the grain bulk than with the grain boundary interfaces, as indicated by the isothermal capacitance transient signals

The synthesis of ``smart structured'' conducting polymers and the fabrication of devices using them are important areas of research. However, conducting polymeric materials that are used in devices are susceptible to degradation due to oxygen and moisture. Thus, protection of such devices to ensure long-term stability is always desirable. Polymer nanocomposites are promising materials for the encapsulation of such devices. Therefore, it is important to develop suitable polymer nanocomposites as encapsulation materials to protect such devices. This work presents a technique based on grafting between surface-decorated gamma-alumina nanoparticles and polymer to make nanocomposites that can be used for the encapsulation of devices. Alumina was functionalized with allyltrimethoxysilane and used to conjugate polymer molecules (hydride-terminated polydimethylsiloxane) through a platinum-catalyzed hydrosilylation reaction. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray-photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the surface chemistry of the nanoparticles after surface modification. The grafting density of alkene groups on the surface of the modified nanoparticles was calculated using CHN and thermogravimetric analyses. The thermal stability of the composites was also evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis. The nanoindentation technique was used to analyze the mechanical characteristics of the composites. The densities of the composites were evaluated using a density gradient column, and the morphology of the composites was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. All of our studies reveal that the composites have good thermal stability and mechanical flexibility and, thus, can potentially be used for the encapsulation of organic photovoltaic devices.

Interaction of CH3OH with Cu clusters deposited on ZnO films grown on a Zn foil as well as on a ZnO(0001)Zn crystal, has been examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. On clean Cu clusters, reversible molecular adsorption or formation of CH3O is observed. However if the Cu clusters are pretreated with oxygen, both CH3O and HCOO- species are produced. Model Cu/ZnO catalyst surfaces, containing both Cu1+ and Cu-0 species, show interesting oxidation properties. On a Cu-0-rich catalyst surface, only CH3O species is formed on interaction with CH3OH. On a Cu1+-rich surface, however, HCOO- ion is the predominant species.

CuO nanowires are synthesized by heating Cu foil, rod and grid in ambient without employing a catalyst or gas flow at temperatures ranging from 400 to 800 degrees C for a duration of 1-12 h. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation reveals the formation of nanowires. The structure, morphology and phase of the as-synthesized nanowires are analyzed by various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It is found that these nanowires are composed of CuO phase and the underlying film is of Cu2O. A systematic study is carried out to find the possibilities for the transformation of one phase to another completely. A possible growth mechanism for the nanowires is also discussed. The He I photoelectron spectra of bromine, methylamine, and their complex have been obtained, and the spectra show that lone-pair orbital energy of nitrogen in methylamine is stabilized by 1.8 eV and the bromine orbital energies are destabilized by about 0.5 eV due to complexation. Ab initio calculations have been performed on the charge-transfer complexes of Br-2 with ammonia and methyl-, dimethyl-, and trimethylamines at the 3-21G*, 6-311G, and 6-311G* levels and also with effective core potentials. Calculations predict donor and acceptor orbital energy shifts upon complexation, and there is a reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental results. Complexation energies have been corrected for BSSE. Frequency analysis has confirmed that ammonia and trimethylamine form complexes with C-3v symmetry and methylamine and dimethylamine with C-s symmetry. Calculations reveal that the lone-pair orbital of nitrogen in amine and the sigma* orbital of Br-2 are involved in the charge-transfer interaction. LANL1DZ basis seems to be consistent and give a reliable estimate of the complexation energy. The computed complexation energies, orbital energy shifts, and natural bond orbital analysis show that the strength of the complex gradually increases from ammonia to trimethylamine.

Fine particle and large surface area Cu/CeO2 catalysts of crystallite sizes in the range of 100-200 Angstrom synthesized by the solution combustion method have been investigated for NO reduction. Five percent Cu/CeO2 catalyst shows nearly 100% conversion of NO by NH3 below 300 degrees C, whereas pure ceria and Zr, Y, and Ca doped ceria show 85-95% NO conversion above 600 degrees C. Similarly NO reduction by CO has been observed over 5% Cu/CeO2 with nearly 100% conversion below 300 degrees C. Hydrocarbon (n-butane) oxidation by NO to CO2, N-2, and H2O has also been demonstrated over this catalyst below 350 degrees C making Cu/CeO2 a new NO reduction catalyst in the low temperature window of 150-350 degrees C. Kinetics of NO reduction over 5% Cu/CeO2 have also been investigated. The rate constants are in the range of 1.4 x 10(4) to 2.3 x 10(4) cm(3) g(-1) s(-1) between 170 and 300 degrees C. Cu/CeO2 catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy where Cu2+ ions are shown to be dispersed on the CeO2 surface. Ceria-supported Au catalyst has been synthesized by the solution combustion method for the first time and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Au is dispersed as Au as well as Au3+ states on CeO2 surface of 20-30 nm crystallites. On heating the as-prepared 1% Au/CeO2 in air, the concentration of Au3- ions on CeO2 increases at the expense of Au. Catalytic activities for CO and hydrocarbon oxidation and NO reduction over the as-prepared and the heat-treated 1% Au/CeO2 have been carried out using a temperature-programmed reaction technique in a packed bed tubular reactor. The results are compared with nano-sized Au metal particles dispersed on alpha-Al2O3 substrate prepared by the same method. All the reactions over heat-treated Au/CeO2 occur at lower temperature in comparison with the as-prepared Au/CeO2 and Au/Al2O3. The rate of NO + CO reaction over as-prepared and heat-treated 1% Au/CeO2 are 28.3 and 54.0 mumol g(-1) s(-1) at 250 and 300 degreesC respeceively. Activation energy (E,) values are 106 and 90 kJ mol(-1) for CO + O-2 reaction respectively over as-prepared and heat-treated 1% Au/CeO2 respectively.

Electrochemically deposited Cu-Ni black coatings on molybdenum substrate from ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) bath solution are shown to exhibit good optical properties (alpha = 0.94, epsilon = 0.09). The deposit is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cu is present in metallic and +2 oxidation states in the as-prepared Cu-Ni black coating, whereas Ni2+ as well as Ni3+ species are observed in the same coating. Cu and Ni are observed in their metallic state after 10 and 20 min sputtering. X-ray initiated Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES) of Cu and Ni also agrees well with XPS investigations. Thin films of ZnO, Li doped ZnO (ZLO) and multilayer of ZnO and ZLO (ZnO/ZLO) were grown on silicon and corning glass substrates by pulsed laser deposition technique. Single phase formation and the crystalline qualities of the films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and Li composition in the film was investigated to be 15 wt% by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Raman spectrum reveals the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO, ZLO and ZnO/ZLO multilayer and confirms the single phase formation. Films grown on corning glass shows more than 80% transmittance in the visible region and the optical band gaps were calculated to be 3.245, 3.26 and 3.22 eV for ZnO, ZLO and ZnO/ZLO, respectively. An efficient blue emission was observed in all films which were grown on silicon (1 0 0) substrate by photoluminescence (PL). PL measurements at different temperatures reveal that the PL emission intensity of ZnO/ZLO multilayer was weakly dependent on temperature as compared to the single layers of ZnO and ZLO and the wavelength of emission was independent of temperature. Our results indicate that ZnO/ZLO multilayer can be used for the fabrication of blue light emitting diodes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
