The role of defect states in the creation of photoluminescence in SrTiO3

We discuss the nature of visible photoluminescence at room temperature in amorphous strontium titanate in the light of the results of a recent experimental and quantum mechanical theoretical study. Our calculation of the electronic structure involves the use of first-principles molecular calculations to simulate the variation of the electronic structure in the strontium titanate crystalline phase, which is known to have a direct band gap, and we also make an in-depth examination of amorphous strontium titanate. The results of our simulations of amorphous strontium titanate indicate that the formation of five-fold coordination in the amorphous system may introduce delocalized electronic levels in the highest occupied molecular orbital and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. These delocalized electronic levels are ascribed to the formation of a tail in the absorbance-spectrum curve. Optical absorption measurements experimentally showed the presence of a tail. The results are interpreted by the nature of these exponential optical edges and tails associated with defects promoted by the disordered structure of the amorphous material. We associate them with localized states in the band gap.

Archives information publishing new design in post-custodial regime: The National Archives Experience Digital Vaults

The uses of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Web environments for creation, treatment and availability of information have supported the emergence of new social-cultural patterns represented by convergences in textual, image and audio languages. This paper describes and analyzes the National Archives Experience Digital Vaults as a digital publishing web environment and as a cultural heritage. It is a complex system - synthesizer of information design options at information setting, provides new aesthetic aspects, but specially enlarges the cognition of the subjects who interact with the environment. It also enlarges the institutional spaces that guard the collective memory beyond its role of keeping the physical patrimony collected there. Digital Vaults lies as a mix of guide and interactive catalogue to be dealt in a ludic way. The publishing design of the information held on the Archives is meant to facilitate access to knowledge. The documents are organized in a dynamic and not chronological way. They are not divided in fonds or distinct categories, but in controlled interaction of documents previously indexed and linked by the software. The software creates information design and view of documental content that can be considered a new paradigm in Information Science and are part of post-custodial regime, independent from physical spaces and institutions. Information professionals must be prepared to understand and work with the paradigmatic changes described and represented by the new hybrid digital environments; hence the importance of this paper. Cyberspace interactivity between user and the content provided by the environment design provide cooperation, collaboration and sharing knowledge actions, all features of networks, transforming culture globally. © 2011 - IOS Press and the authors. Brasiliporella, a new mid-Cretaceous dasycladacean genus: The earliest record of the Tribe Batophoreae

New material collected in Albian and Cenomanian strata from Brazil helps us to better understand the structure of a poorly known dasycladacean alga, Holosporella nkossaensis P. Masse, in Bull Centr Rech Explor-Prod elf aquitaine, 19: 301-317, 1995: each of its fertile laterals, which are regularly arranged in verticils along the cylindrical algal thallus, consists of a distally inXated primary bearing two vesicular ampullae in terminal position. These traits are not known in representatives of the genus Holosporella Pia, 1930 nor in any genera described to date. On this basis, we introduce the new genus Brasiliporella with Brasiliporella nkossaensis emend. nov. comb. as its typespecies. We also discuss the systematic aYnity of the new taxon: it is ascribed to the Tribe Batophoreae, and in a broader manner the current paleontological 'interpretation of the concept' (in French: 'acception') of the Order Dasycladales, with the creation of two new families and accordingly with the emendation of two other families. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

The new digital revolution: From the consumer Internet to the industrial Internet

The new digital technologies have led to widespread use of cloud computing, recognition of the potential of big data analytics, and significant progress in aspects of the Internet of Things, such as home automation, smart cities and grids and digital manufacturing. In addition to closing gaps in respect of the basic necessities of access and usage, now the conditions must be established for using the new platforms and finding ways to participate actively in the creation of content and even new applications and platforms. This message runs through the three chapters of this book. Chapter I presents the main features of the digital revolution, emphasizing that today’s world economy is a digital economy. Chapter II examines the region’s strengths and weaknesses with respect to digital access and consumption. Chapter III reviews the main policy debates and urges countries to take a more proactive approach towards, for example, regulation, network neutrality and combating cybercrime. The conclusion highlights two crucial elements: first, the need to take steps towards a single regional digital market that can compete in a world of global platforms by tapping the benefits of economies of scale and developing network economies; and second, the significance of the next stage of the digital agenda for Latin America and the Caribbean (eLAC2018), which will embody the latest updates to a cooperation strategy that has been in place for over a decade.
