Robot visual localization through local feature fusion: an evaluation of multiple classifiers combination approaches

In the last decade, local image features have been widely used in robot visual localization. In order to assess image similarity, a strategy exploiting these features compares raw descriptors extracted from the current image with those in the models of places. This paper addresses the ensuing step in this process, where a combining function must be used to aggregate results and assign each place a score. Casting the problem in the multiple classifier systems framework, in this paper we compare several candidate combiners with respect to their performance in the visual localization task. For this evaluation, we selected the most popular methods in the class of non-trained combiners, namely the sum rule and product rule. A deeper insight into the potential of these combiners is provided through a discriminativity analysis involving the algebraic rules and two extensions of these methods: the threshold, as well as the weighted modifications. In addition, a voting method, previously used in robot visual localization, is assessed. Furthermore, we address the process of constructing a model of the environment by describing how the model granularity impacts upon performance. All combiners are tested on a visual localization task, carried out on a public dataset. It is experimentally demonstrated that the sum rule extensions globally achieve the best performance, confirming the general agreement on the robustness of this rule in other classification problems. The voting method, whilst competitive with the product rule in its standard form, is shown to be outperformed by its modified versions.

An integer programming framework for sequencing cutting patterns based on interval graph completion

We derived a framework in integer programming, based on the properties of a linear ordering of the vertices in interval graphs, that acts as an edge completion model for obtaining interval graphs. This model can be applied to problems of sequencing cutting patterns, namely the minimization of open stacks problem (MOSP). By making small modifications in the objective function and using only some of the inequalities, the MOSP model is applied to another pattern sequencing problem that aims to minimize, not only the number of stacks, but also the order spread (the minimization of the stack occupation problem), and the model is tested.

An integer programming model for the minimum interval graph completion problem

The minimum interval graph completion problem consists of, given a graph G = ( V, E ), finding a supergraph H = ( V, E ∪ F ) that is an interval graph, while adding the least number of edges |F| . We present an integer programming formulation for solving the minimum interval graph completion problem recurring to a characteri- zation of interval graphs that produces a linear ordering of the maximal cliques of the solution graph.

Increase of the Delivered Power Probability in Distribution Networks using Pareto DC Programming

A methodology to increase the probability of delivering power to any load point through the identification of new investments in distribution network components is proposed in this paper. The method minimizes the investment cost as well as the cost of energy not supplied in the network. A DC optimization model based on mixed integer non-linear programming is developed considering the Pareto front technique in order to identify the adequate investments in distribution networks components which allow increasing the probability of delivering power for any customer in the distribution system at the minimum possible cost for the system operator, while minimizing the energy not supplied cost. Thus, a multi-objective problem is formulated. To illustrate the application of the proposed methodology, the paper includes a case study which considers a 180 bus distribution network

Sistema de televisão interactiva para o mercado hoteleiro

A Nonius Software é uma empresa nacional de engenharia na área de telecomunicações, que se dedica ao desenvolvimento de soluções para a gestão de sistemas informáticos e de entretenimento, tendo como finalidade o mercado mundial hoteleiro e hospitalar. A solução de TV interactiva da Nonius oferece uma experiência única ao hóspede, ao disponibilizar várias opções de entretenimento e acesso a conteúdos de elevada qualidade e interesse. O hóspede tem acesso a canais de TV, aluguer de filmes, Internet, jogos, informações, promoções e compras na TV. O objectivo principal desta dissertação foi implementar alguns serviços de entretenimento numa televisão LG Pro: Centric. Este equipamento tem como principal vantagem o facto de conter a set-top-box inserida dentro da própria televisão. Em termos arquitectónicos, o sistema Nonius TV tem dois elementos fundamentais: o backend, responsável pelo processamento e tratamento da informação centralizada e o frontend instalado nos dispositivos com os quais o hóspede contacta directamente. Uma parte significativa do trabalho desenvolvido centrou-se na implementação de funcionalidades no backend. Foram, no entanto, também desenvolvidas algumas funcionalidades nos serviços de frontend. Para o cumprimento dos objectivos estabelecidos, foi utilizada a tecnologia FLASH, tendo como linguagem de programação a segunda versão do ActionScript. Relativamente ao desenvolvimento de backend são utilizados o PHP e o JavaScript.

Confluent peripheral multiple mononeuropathy associated to acute hepatitis B: a case report

A thirty three year-old, male patient was admitted at the Hospital of the São Paulo University School of Medicine, at the city of São Paulo, Brazil, with complaint of pains, tingling and decreased sensibility in the right hand for the last four months. This had progressed to the left hand, left foot and right foot, in addition to a difficulty of flexing and stretching in the left foot. Tests were positive for HBeAg, IgM anti-HBc and HBsAg, thus characterizing the condition of acute hepatitis B. The ALT serum level was 15 times above the upper normal limit. Blood glucose, cerebral spinal fluid, antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and anti-HIV and anti-HCV serum tests were either normal or negative. Electroneuromyography disclosed severe peripheral neuropathy with an axon prevalence and signs of denervation; nerve biopsy disclosed intense vasculitis. The diagnosis of multiple confluent mononeuropathy associated to acute hepatitis B was done. This association is not often reported in international literature and its probable cause is the direct action of the hepatitis B virus on the nerves or a vasculitis of the vasa nervorum brought about by deposits of immune complexes.

Hybrid Maneuver for Gradient Search with Multiple Coordinated AUVs

This work presents a hybrid maneuver for gradient search with multiple AUV's. The mission consists in following a gradient field in order to locate the source of a hydrothermal vent or underwater freshwater source. The formation gradient search exploits the environment structuring by the phenomena to be studied. The ingredients for coordination are the payload data collected by each vehicle and their knowledge of the behaviour of other vehicles and detected formation distortions.

E-assessment in mathematics courses with multiple-choice questions tests

With the implementation of the Bologna Process several challenges have been posed to higher education institution, particularly in Portugal. One of the main implications is related to the change of the paradigm of a teacher centered education, to a paradigm that is student centered. This change implies the change of the way to assess courses in higher education institutions. Continuous and formative assessments emerged as the focus, catalyzed by electronic assessment, or e-assessment. This paper presents a case of the implementation of an e-assessment strategy, implemented in order to allow continuous, formative assessment in numerous mathematics classes using multiple-choice questions tests implement in Moodle open-source learning management system. The implementation can be considered a success.
