March 14, 2012 THIS WEEK: The Functions of Government BACKGROUND: The text and documents presented here were taken from the book The Government of Iowa by Frank Edward Horack, A.M., Ph.D. Dr. Horack was assistant professor of political science at the University of Iowa and secretary of the Iowa State Historical Society. The book was published in 1911 and 1915 by Charles Scribner’s Sons.

Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, Strategic Plan 2012-2015

The Department of Cultural Affairs was created in the state government reorganization in 1986. The department’s two divisions, the Iowa Arts Council and the State Historical Society (SHSI) have a much longer history of service to Iowans. With such a rich history, it is fitting that the Department of Cultural Affairs calls the State Historical Museum home, a facility which collects, preserves and showcases Iowa’s treasures that itself can trace its roots in state government back 120 years. Generations of Iowans have been touched by the programs and services provided through this department. Though organized as one department, the DCA has never undergone strategic planning as a single, cohesive organization. With a desire to move forward as a stronger, more unified entity, a departmentwide strategic planning process becomes critical to future success as the department continues to better assess its resources and expertise internally, while ensuring it is focused on the common goal of leveraging cultural resources across the state of Iowa.

This reprint of the book that gave to Iowa its name was published by the State Historical Society of Iowa in commemoration of the travels and explorations of Albert M. Lea in the Iowa country in 1835 while serving as Lieutenant in the First United States Dragoons.

Work accident indemnity in Iowa, 1912

This paper on Work Accident Indemnity in Iowa, as well as the volume on the History of Work Accident Indemnity in Iowa, is the outgrowth of the author's, E. H. Downey, study of the History of Labor Legislation in Iowa, which was published by The State Historical Society of Iowa in the Iowa Economic History Series. Dealing with the vital subject of employers' liability and workmen's compensation, Professor Downey's paper will, it is thought, be found especially helpful to those interested in present day legislation. This paper was edited by Benjamen F. Shambaugh.

Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs’ FY13-FY15 Annual Report. The department recently developed a new mission and vision to focus our efforts and ensure everything we do is in the best interest of Iowans. The impact of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs on our state can be measured through quality of life initiatives that are catalysts for attracting, recruiting and retaining jobs, companies, and talent to Iowa.
