Digestive ripening, a postsynthetic treatment of colloidal nanoparticles, is a versatile method to produce monodisperse nanoparticles and to prepare various bimetallic nanostructures. The mechanism of this process is largely unknown. Herein, we present a systematic study conducted using Au nanoparticles prepared by a solvated metal atom dispersion method to probe the mechanistic aspects of digestive ripening. In our study, experimental conditions such as concentration of capping agent, reaction time, and temperature, were found to influence the course of the digestive ripening process. Here it is shown that, during digestive ripening under reflux, nanoparticles within an optimum size window are conserved, and surface etching facilitated mass transfer resulted in monodisperse nanoparticles. Overall, digestive ripening can be considered as a kinetically controlled thermodynamic process.

The heat transfer from a solid phase to an impinging non-isothermal liquid droplet is studied numerically. A new approach based on an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) finite element method for solving the incompressible Navier Stokes equations in the liquid and the energy equation within the solid and the liquid is presented. The novelty of the method consists in using the ALE-formulation also in the solid phase to guarantee matching grids along the liquid solid interface. Moreover, a new technique is developed to compute the heat flux without differentiating the numerical solution. The free surface and the liquid solid interface of the droplet are represented by a moving mesh which can handle jumps in the material parameter and a temperature dependent surface tension. Further, the application of the Laplace-Beltrami operator technique for the curvature approximation allows a natural inclusion of the contact angle. Numerical simulation for varying Reynold, Weber, Peclet and Biot numbers are performed to demonstrate the capabilities of the new approach. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a theoretical model for studying the effects of shrinkage induced flow on the growth rate of binary alloy dendrites. An equivalent undercooling of the melt is defined in terms of ratio of the phase densities to represent the change in dendrite growth rate due to variation in solutal and thermal transport resulting from shrinkage induced flow. Subsequently, results for dendrite growth rate predicted by the equivalent undercooling model is compared with the corresponding predictions obtained using an enthalpy based numerical method for dendrite growth with shrinkage. The agreement is found to be good. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The paper presents a simulation study of loose cylindrically shaped particles packed within a copper plate and aluminum fins. The model presented solves coupled heat and mass transfer equations using the finite volume method based on ANSY S FLUENT medium. Three different arrangements of cylindrical particles are considered. The model is validated with experimental data. It is found that the arrangements which represented monolayer configurations are only marginally better in heat transfer and uptake efficiency than the tri-layer configuration in the presence of fins. However, there is an appreciable difference in the uptake curve between monoand tri-layer configurations in the absence of fins. Finally, it is found that the fin pitch also plays an important role in determining the time constant for the adsorber design.

A comprehensive numerical investigation on the impingement and spreading of a non-isothermal liquid droplet on a solid substrate with heterogeneous wettability is presented in this work. The time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are used to describe the fluid flow in the liquid droplet, whereas the heat transfer in the moving droplet and in the solid substrate is described by the energy equation. The arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation with finite elements is used to solve the time-dependent incompressible Navier-Stokes equation and the energy equation in the time-dependent moving domain. Moreover, the Marangoni convection is included in the variational form of the Navier-Stokes equations without calculating the partial derivatives of the temperature on the free surface. The heterogeneous wettability is incorporated into the numerical model by defining a space-dependent contact angle. An array of simulations for droplet impingement on a heated solid substrate with circular patterned heterogeneous wettability are presented. The numerical study includes the influence of wettability contrast, pattern diameter, Reynolds number and Weber number on the confinement of the spreading droplet within the inner region, which is more wettable than the outer region. Also, the influence of these parameters on the total heat transfer from the solid substrate to the liquid droplet is examined. We observe that the equilibrium position depends on the wettability contrast and the diameter of the inner surface. Consequently. the heat transfer is more when the wettability contrast is small and/or the diameter of inner region is large. The influence of the Weber number on the total heat transfer is more compared to the Reynolds number, and the total heat transfer increases when the Weber number increases. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Nanoparticle deposition behavior observed at the Darcy scale represents an average of the processes occurring at the pore scale. Hence, the effect of various pore-scale parameters on nanoparticle deposition can be understood by studying nanoparticle transport at pore scale and upscaling the results to the Darcy scale. In this work, correlation equations for the deposition rate coefficients of nanoparticles in a cylindrical pore are developed as a function of nine pore-scale parameters: the pore radius, nanoparticle radius, mean flow velocity, solution ionic strength, viscosity, temperature, solution dielectric constant, and nanoparticle and collector surface potentials. Based on dominant processes, the pore space is divided into three different regions, namely, bulk, diffusion, and potential regions. Advection-diffusion equations for nanoparticle transport are prescribed for the bulk and diffusion regions, while the interaction between the diffusion and potential regions is included as a boundary condition. This interaction is modeled as a first-order reversible kinetic adsorption. The expressions for the mass transfer rate coefficients between the diffusion and the potential regions are derived in terms of the interaction energy profile. Among other effects, we account for nanoparticle-collector interaction forces on nanoparticle deposition. The resulting equations are solved numerically for a range of values of pore-scale parameters. The nanoparticle concentration profile obtained for the cylindrical pore is averaged over a moving averaging volume within the pore in order to get the 1-D concentration field. The latter is fitted to the 1-D advection-dispersion equation with an equilibrium or kinetic adsorption model to determine the values of the average deposition rate coefficients. In this study, pore-scale simulations are performed for three values of Peclet number, Pe = 0.05, 5, and 50. We find that under unfavorable conditions, the nanoparticle deposition at pore scale is best described by an equilibrium model at low Peclet numbers (Pe = 0.05) and by a kinetic model at high Peclet numbers (Pe = 50). But, at an intermediate Pe (e.g., near Pe = 5), both equilibrium and kinetic models fit the 1-D concentration field. Correlation equations for the pore-averaged nanoparticle deposition rate coefficients under unfavorable conditions are derived by performing a multiple-linear regression analysis between the estimated deposition rate coefficients for a single pore and various pore-scale parameters. The correlation equations, which follow a power law relation with nine pore-scale parameters, are found to be consistent with the column-scale and pore-scale experimental results, and qualitatively agree with the colloid filtration theory. These equations can be incorporated into pore network models to study the effect of pore-scale parameters on nanoparticle deposition at larger length scales such as Darcy scale.

An experimental investigation of evaporation of a pentane meniscus from a heated capillary slot is presented. A novel aspect of this study is that both the wicking height and steady state evaporation mass flow rate are measured simultaneously. Based on a macroscopic force balance, the apparent contact angle of the evaporating meniscus is experimentally estimated from the wicking height and mass flow rate. This is compared with the results obtained using evaporating thin-film theory. The experimentally estimated contact angle is slightly larger than that obtained from the thin-film model but both show similar trends. Further, it is found that the reduction in the meniscus height is primarily due to an increase in the apparent contact angle. The liquid and vapor pressure drops in the capillary are insignificant relative to the capillary pressure. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This article presents a theoretical analysis of heat and mass transfer in a silica gel + water adsorption process using scaling principles. A two-dimensional columnar packed adsorber domain is chosen for the study, with side and bottom walls cooled and vapour inlet from the top. The adsorption process is initiated from the cold walls with a temperature jump of 15 K, whereas the water vapour supply is maintained at a constant inlet pressure of 1 kPa. The first part of the study is dedicated to deriving relevant scales for the adsorption process by an order of magnitude analysis of energy, continuity and momentum equations. In the latter part, the derived scales are compared with the outcome of numerical studies performed for various domain widths and aspect ratio of bed. A good correlation between scaling and simulation results is observed, thereby validating the scaling approach. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Applications of hydriding materials for solid state hydrogen storage, hydrogen compression, thermal energy storage and sorption heating and cooling systems have been demonstrated successfully. However, the performance of these devices significantly depends upon heat and mass transfer characteristics of the reactive packed beds. One of the important parameters regulating heat and mass transfer in the hydriding bed is its effective thermal conductivity (ETC), which is dependent on several operating parameters such as pressure and temperature. ETC also varies significantly due to the variation of hydrogen concentration during the hydriding and dehydriding processes. Based on the extensive studies done by the authors on ETC of metal hydride beds, a review of experimental methods, mathematical studies and augmentation techniques is presented in this paper, with emphasis on the effects of operating parameters on ETC. The physical vapor transport (PVT) method is being widely used to grow large-size single SiC crystals. The growth process is associated with heat and mass transport in the growth chamber, chemical reactions among multiple species as well as phase change at the crystal/gas interface. The current paper aims at studying and verifying the transport mechanism and growth kinetics model by demonstrating the flow field and species concentration distribution in the growth system. We have developed a coupled model, which takes into account the mass transport and growth kinetics. Numerical simulation is carried out by employing an in-house developed software based on finite volume method. The results calculated are in good agreement with the experimental observation.

The magnetic fields produced by electrical coils are designed for damping the the thermocapillary convection in a floating half-zone in microgravity. The fields are designed specially to reduce the flow near the free surface and then in the melt zone by adjusting the longitudinal coil positions close to the melt zone. The effects of the designed magnetic fields on reducing the flow velocity and temperature distribution non-uniformity in the melt zone are stronger than those of the case of an uniform longitudinal magnetic field obtained by numerical simulation, particularly at the melt-rod interface. It brings fundamental insights into the heat and mass transfer control at the solidification interface by the magnetic field design for crystal growth by the floating full-zone method.

Recent progress in the study of air-sea interface processes for momentum, heat, moisture and mass transfer are reviewed in the present article. Except for turbulent structure, we have analysed the other physical mechanisms occurring in the wave boundary layer, such as the roles of the sea surface state, droplets and bubbles due to wave breaking, which at least partly account for the existing discrepancies between theory and observations. The experiments, both over the ocean and in the laboratory, are described briefly. In conclusion, a few perspective trends in this area are suggested for further investigation.

This paper presents a combined experimental and numerical study on natural convection in open-celled metal foams. The effective thermal conductivities of steel alloy (FeCrAlY) samples with different relative densities and cell sizes are measured with the guarded-hot-plate method. To examine the natural convection effect, the measurements are conducted under both vacuum and ambient conditions for a range of temperatures. The experimental results show that natural convection is very significant, accounting for up to 50% of the effective foam conductivity obtained at ambient pressure. This has been attributed to the high porosity (ε > 0.9) and inter-connected open cells of the metal foams studied. Morphological parameters characterizing open-celled FeCrAlY foams are subsequently identified and their cross-relationships are built. The non-equilibrium two-equation energy transfer model is employed, and selected calculations show that the non-equilibrium effect between the solid foam skeleton and air is significant. The study indicates that the combined parameter, i.e., the porous medium Rayleigh number, is no longer appropriate to correlate natural convection by itself when the Darcy number is sufficiently large as in the case of natural convection in open-celled metal foams. Good agreement between model predictions and experimental measurements is obtained. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents results from experimental measurements on radiative transfer in FeCrAlY (a steel based high temperature alloy) foams having high porosity (95%) and different cell sizes, manufactured at low cost from the sintering route. The spectral transmittance and reflectance are measured at different infrared wavelengths ranging from 2.5 to 50 μm, which are subsequently used to determine the extinction coefficient and foam emissivity. The results show that the spectral quantities are strongly dependent on the wavelength, particularly in the short wavelength regime (<25 μm). Whilst the extinction coefficient decreases with increasing cell size, the effect of cell size on foam reflectance is not significant. When the temperature is increased, the total extinction coefficient increases but the total reflectance decreases. An analytical model based on geometric optics laws, diffraction theory and metal foam morphology is developed to predict the radiative transfer, with cell size (or cell ligament diameter) and porosity identified as the two key parameters that dictate the foam radiative properties. Close agreement between the predicted effective foam conductivity due to radiation alone and that measured is observed. At fixed porosity, the radiative conductivity of the metal foam increases with increasing cell size and temperature. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd.All rights reserved.
