The combination of nanostenciling with pulsed laser deposition (PLD) provides a flexible, fast approach for patterning the growth of Ge on Si. Within each stencilled site, the morphological evolution of the Ge structures with deposition follows a modified Stranski–Krastanov (SK) growth mode. By systematically varying the PLD parameters (laser repetition rate and number of pulses) on two different substrate orientations (111 and 100), we have observed corresponding changes in growth morphology, strain and elemental composition using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and μ-Raman spectroscopy. The growth behaviour is well predicted within a classical SK scheme, although the Si(100) growth exhibits significant relaxation and ripening with increasing coverage. Other novel aspects of the growth include the increased thickness of the wetting layer and the kinetic control of Si/Ge intermixing via the PLD repetition rate.

Pt ions-CeO2 interaction in Ce1-xPtxO2-delta (x=0.02) has been studied for the first time by electrochemical method combined with x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Working electrodes made of CeO2 and Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-delta mixed with 30% carbon are treated electrochemically between 0.0-1.2 V in potentiostatic (chronoamperometry) and potentiodynamic (cyclic voltametry) mode with reference to saturated calomel electrode. Reversible oxidation of Pt-0 to Pt2+ and Pt4+ state due to the applied positive potential is coupled to simultaneous reversible reduction of Ce4+ to Ce3+ state. CeO2 reduces to CeO2-y (y=0.35) after applying 1.2 V, which is not reversible; Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-delta reaches a steady state with Pt2+:Pt4+ in the ratio of 0.60:0.40 and Ce4+:Ce3+ in the ratio of 0.55:0.45 giving a composition Ce0.98Pt0.02O1.74 at 1.2 V, which is reversible. Composition of Pt ion substituted compound is reversible between Ce0.98Pt0.02O1.95 to Ce0.98Pt0.02O1.74 within the potential range of 0.0-1.2 V. Thus, Ce0.98Pt0.02O2-delta forms a stable electrode for oxidation of H2O to O-2 unlike CeO2. A linear relation between oxidation of Pt2+ to Pt4+ with simultaneous reduction in Ce4+ to Ce3+ is observed demonstrating Pt-CeO2 metal support interaction is due to reversible Pt-0/Pt2+/Pt4+ interaction with Ce4+/Ce3+ redox couple.

This paper presents two approximate analytical expressions for nonlinear electric fields in the principal direction in axially symmetric (3D) and two dimensional (2D) ion trap mass analysers with apertures (holes in case of 3D traps and slits in case of 2D traps) on the electrodes. Considered together (3D and 2D), we present composite approximations for the principal unidirectional nonlinear electric fields in these ion traps. The composite electric field E has the form E = E-noaperture + E-aperture. where E-noaperture is the field within an imagined trap which is identical to the practical trap except that the apertures are missing and E-aperture is the field contribution due to apertures on the two trap electrodes. The field along the principal axis, of the trap can in this way be well approximated for any aperture that is not too large. To derive E-aperture. classical results of electrostatics have been extended to electrodes with finite thickness and different aperture shapes.E-noaperture is a modified truncated multipole expansion for the imagined trap with no aperture. The first several terms in the multipole expansion are in principle exact(though numerically determined using the BEM), while the last term is chosen to match the field at the electrode. This expansion, once Computed, works with any aperture in the practical trap. The composite field approximation for axially symmetric (3D) traps is checked for three geometries: the Paul trap, the cylindrical ion trap (CIT) and an arbitrary other trap. The approximation for 2D traps is verified using two geometries: the linear ion trap (LIT) and the rectilinear ion trap (RIT). In each case, for two aperture sizes (10% and 50% of the trap dimension), highly satisfactory fits are obtained. These composite approximations may be used in more detailed nonlinear ion dynamics Studies than have been hitherto attempted. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An investigation of power frequency (50 Hz) surface partial discharges in dry air, using 21r/3 Rogowski profile electrodes in the low pressure range of 0.067 to 91.333 kPa, shows that for the discharges occurring symmetrically around the electrodes and just outside the uniform field region, the breakdown voltages are 20 to 30% lower than those accounted for by the usual Paschen values. Emphasis, therefore, has been given to modified values of breakdown voltages for any useful calculations. The effect of reduced pressure on inception voltage has been discussed and an attempt has been made to explain the difference between the observed and calculated values on the basis of a pressure-dependent secondary ionization coefficient. It is shown that increasing the insulation thickness in a critical pressure range (0.067 to 0.400 kPa) does not allow any significant increase in the discharge free working stress of the insulation system. At higher pressures (>0.400 kPa) the increase in inception voltage with thickness and pressure follows an equation which is expected to hold for other insulating materials as well.

We have determined relative levels of chloroplast leucine and tyrosine isoaccepting tRNAs and modified nucleotide contents from total tRNAs isolated from dark-grown, light-grown, N6-isopentenyladenine (i6A)-treated dark-grown and i6A-treated light-grown cucumber seedlings. Significant increases in the relative amounts of tRNA(Leu)2 and tRNA(Leu)3 were observed in the i6A-treated dark-grown seedlings compared to dark-grown, light-grown and i6A-treated light-grown seedlings. On the other hand, i6A-treated light-grown seedlings tRNA(Tyr)1 increased to 85% of total tRNAs(Tyr) from about 9% in light-grown seedlings and tRNA(Tyr)2 decreased to 15% compared with 91% in light-grown seedlings. Analysis of modified nucleotide of total tRNAs indicated that pT, pI, pm1A, pm5C, pGm, pm1G, pm2G and pm7G contents were significantly higher in the total tRNA of i6A-treated dark-grown seedlings than those from untreated dark-grown seedlings. Illumination of 8-day-old dark-grown seedlings for 12 h increased the contents of pT, pI, pGm and pm1G when compared to 8-day-old dark-grown seedlings with extended growth for 12 h in dark. On the contrary, i6A had no stimulatory effect in the contents of modified nucleotide in the light-grown seedlings.

The performance of exfoliated graphite (EG)–ruthenium oxide (RuOx) composites as binderless electrodes is evaluated for electrochemical capacitors (ECs). A composite of EG–RuOx is prepared by a modified sol–gel process. The material is characterized using X-ray diffraction and microscopy. Electrochemical capacitors with the composite electrodes in the presence of aqueous sulfuric acid (H2SO4) electrolyte are evaluated using voltammetry, impedance and charge–discharge studies. Cyclic voltammetry reveals very stable current–voltage behaviour up to several thousands of cycles, as well as high specific capacitances, e.g., a few hundreds of farads per gram for the composite that contains 16.5 wt.% RuOx.

Durability is central to the commercialization of polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). The incorporation of TiO2 with platinum (Pt) ameliorates both the stability and catalytic activity of cathodes in relation to pristine Pt cathodes currently being used in PEFCs. PEFC cathodes comprising carbon-supported Pt-TiO2 (Pt-TiO2/C) exhibit higher durability in relation to Pt/C cathodes as evidenced by cell polarization, impedance, and cyclic voltammetry data. The degradation in performance of the Pt-TiO2/C cathodes is 10% after 5000 test cycles as against 28% for Pt/C cathodes. These data are in conformity with the electrochemical surface area and impedance values. Pt-TiO2/C cathodes can withstand even 10,000 test cycles with nominal effect on their performance. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope, and cross-sectional field-emission-scanning electron microscope studies on the catalytic electrodes reflect that incorporating TiO2 with Pt helps in mitigating the aggregation of Pt particles and protects the Nafion membrane against peroxide radicals formed during the cathodic reduction of oxygen. Highly uniform, stable nanobimetallic dispersions are prepared in a single si ep in the form of sols, gels, and monoliths, using organically modified silicates as the matrix and the stabilizer. The Pt-Pd bimetallic dispersions are characterized by W-vis, TEM, SEM, and XRD measurements. The evolution of silicate was followed by IR spectroscopy. XPS and CO adsorption studies reveal that the structure of the particles consists of a palladium core and a platinum shell. Electrocatalysis of ascorbic acid oxidation has been demonstrated using thin films of silicate containing the nanobimetal particles on a glassy carbon electrode.

The EMF of a solid-state cell, incorporating a composite solid-electrolyte with gradual variation in composition, and dissimilar gas electrodes, has been studied as a function of temperature and partial pressures at the electrodes. The cell with the configuration: Pt, CO2' + O2' parallel-to Na2CO3\Na(SO4)x(CO3)1-x\Na2SO4 parallel-to SO3'' + SO2'' + O2'', Pt x=0 x=1 was investigated in the temperature range 973 to 1079 K. The solid-electrolyte surface exposed to SO3 + SO2 + O2 gas mixture was doped-Na2SO4, whereas the CO2 + O2 gas mixture was in contact with pure Na2CO3. The composition of the solid solution between the carbonate and sulfate, with hexagonal structure, was varied gradually between the boundary values. It has been found that the EMF of the cell is close to that calculated from thermodynamic data, assuming unit transport number for Na+ ions. The gradient in the concentration of sulfate and carbonate ions in the electrolyte does not give rise to a significant diffusion potential.

The effect of acid/base functional-groups associated with platinized-carbon electrodes on their catalytic activity toward electro-oxidation of methanol in sulfuric acid electrolyte at 60-degrees-C is studied. Platinized-carbon electrodes with sm amounts of functional groups exhibit higher catalytic activity compared to those with large concentrations of acidic/basic surface functionalities. The overpotential for methanol oxidation is minimum on electrodes of platinized carbons with pHzpc values between 6 and 7. An x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic study of various platinized carbons suggests that the acid/base surface functional-groups produce ample amounts of surface Pt-oxides and a consequent decrease in activity toward methanol oxidation.

A study is made of the electrooxidation of methanol in sulfuric acid on carbon-supported electrodes containing platinum-tin bimetal catalysts that are prepared by an in situ potentiometric-characterization route. The catalysts are investigated by employing chemical analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption-near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data in conjunction with electrochemical measurements. From the electrochemical data, it is inferred that while an electrode with (3:1) Pt-Sn/C catalyst involves a two-electron rate-limiting step akin to platinum-on-carbon electrodes, it is shifted to a one-electron mechanism on electrodes with (3:2)Pt-Sn/C, (3:3)Pt-Sn/C, and (3:4)Pt-Sn/C catalysts. The study suggests that the tin content in the platinum-tin bimetal catalyst produces: (i) a charge transfer from tin to platinum; (ii) an increase in the coverage of adsorbed methanolic residues with increase in the tin content, as indicated by the shift in rest potential of the electrodes towards the reversible value for oxidation of methanol (0.043 V versus SHE), and (iii) a decrease in the overall content of higher valent platinum sites in the catalyst.

Redox reactions which occur at positive potentials such as ferrous/ferric, hydroquinone/quinone, ferrocyanide/ferricyanide etc. in aqueous acidic electrolytes cannot be studied on non-platinum metals, for example, a Ni electrode. On the contrary, these reactions occur on polyaniline (PANI) modified Ni electrodes, as evidenced from cyclic voltammetry, amperometry and steady-state polarization experiments. Under identical experimental conditions of scan rate (v) and concentration (C), the peak current density (i(p)) values of Fe2+/Fe3+ redox reaction are greater on the PANI modified Ni than on Pt. Additionally, the peak potential separation (DeltaE(p)) of the voltammogram is lesser on the PANI modified Ni. With an increase in thickness of the PANI, DeltaE(p) increases suggesting that the redox reactions tend to depart from the reversibility. Scanning electron micrographs reveal the presence of a crystalline deposit of PANI on Ni when the thickness of PANI is about 0.08 mum. However, the PANI becomes amorphous and porous at higher thickness values. Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies corroborate the observations made out of scanning electron microscopy. Higher catalytic activity of PANI is attributed to crystalline nature of PANI on Ni. Exchange current density and standard rate constant of Fe2+/Fe(3+)redox reaction are evaluated. Polyaniline (PANI) has been studied as an active material for electrochemical capacitors. Polymerization of aniline to PANI has been carried out potentiodynamically on a stainless steel (SS) substrate, instead of Pt-based substrates generally employed for this application. The PANI/SS electrodes have been evaluated by assembling symmetrical capacitors in NaClO(4) + HClO(4) mixed electrolyte and subjecting them to galvanostatic charge/discharge cycles between 0 and 0.75 V. The effect of substrate has been assessed by comparing the capacitance of PANI/SS and PANI/Pt electrodes. The capacitance of PANI/SS electrode is higher than that of PANI/Pt electrode by several times. The effect of sweep rate of potentiodynamic deposition of PANI/SS on capacitance has been investigated. At a power density of 0.5 kW kg(-1), a capacitance value of 815 F g(-1) of PANI is obtained for the deposition sweep rate of 200 mV s(-1). Increase in thickness of PANI on the SS substrate results in an increase in capacitance of PANI. This value of capacitance is the highest ever reported for any electrochemical capacitor material. Thus, in addition to a favorable economic aspect involved in using SS instead of Pt or Pt-based substrate, the advantage of higher capacitance of PANI has also been achieved. Exfoliated graphite (EG) was modified by covalently attaching dopamine (DA) (3,4-dihydroxyphenethylamine) through amide linkages, using -COOH groups introduced on the EG surface. The modified material was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, Xray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques. Composites of DA modified EG dispersed in organically modified silicates were prepared by a sol-get process. Electrodes were fabricated by casting the composites in glass tubes. The sol-gel based electrodes were found to be active for the electrocatalytic oxidation of NADH and biosensing of ethanol in presence of NAD(+) and alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme. The modified composite electrodes were found to be stable for several months. The surface of the electrode could be renewed just by mechanically polishing the electrode using emery sheets. The modified EG was also pressed and restacked in the form of a pellet and the use of this material as a binderless bulk-modified electrode was also demonstrated. The performance of sol-gel derived composite EG electrodes with binderless bulk-modified EG electrodes was compared. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
