Assesing advertising efficiency: does the internet play a role?

This research focuses on a major concern for marketers addressing the claims of inefficiency of the spending on advertising. We examine whether the Internet can help increase overall advertising efficiency. Using a sample from the Spanish automobile industry, we combine a nonparametric method - Data Envelopment Analysis - with recent important insights from statistics and econometrics studies, and we find that online advertising improves the efficiency levels and this effect is more pronounced in the long-term temporal framework.

Internet com a laboratori virtual dins de l'ensenyament d'Enginyeria de Materials

L’objectiu principal d’aquest projecte és seleccionar i exposar una sèrie de recursos disponibles a Internet, que permetin complementar o facilitar l’aprenentatge dels continguts de la titulació d’Enginyeria de Materials. Al llarg del treball es presenten un total de 124 animacions de diferents temàtiques. La majoria d’elles provenen de pàgines web d’universitats i centres involucrats en l’estudi de materials. També s’exposa una animació d’elaboració pròpia, així com el fonament teòric en què es basa. Cal destacar que l’ús d’applets en l’ensenyament d’Enginyeria de Materials no implica una despesa econòmica extra, i que està d’acord amb les directrius de generar els mínims residus i de fomentar la reducció en origen, establertes en el Pla d’Acció Local per a la Sostenibilitat de la UAB. Gràcies també a la facilitat d’ús, els applets tenen un futur prometedor en l’ensenyament de moltes matèries.

Conflict prevention and decentralized governance: some remarks about the state of the art in theory and practice

Is there a link between decentralized governance and conflict prevention? This article tries to answer the question by presenting the state of the art of the intersection of both concepts. Provided that social conflict is inevitable and given the appearance of new threats and types of violence, as well as new demands for security based on people (human security), our societies should focus on promoting peaceful changes. Through an extensive analysis of the existing literature and the study of several cases, this paper suggests that decentralized governance can contribute to these efforts by transforming conflicts, bringing about power-sharing and inclusion incentives of minority groups. Albeit the complexity of assessing its impact on conflict prevention, it can be contended that decentralized governance might have very positive effects on the reduction of causes that bring about conflicts due to its ability to foster the creation of war/violence preventors. More specifically, this paper argues that decentralization can have a positive impact on the so-called triggers and accelerators (short- and medium-term causes).

L’entorn canviant d’internet ha significat una transformació en la forma de distribució de la informació de les agències de notícies. L’ACN, una agència jove, amb només deu anys d’història, ha fet del teletreball, el multiformat, les noves tecnologies i la polivalència les seves raons de ser.

The Barcelona Forum: on decentralized governance and conflict prevention 6-8 july 2009

The Barcelona Forum aimed to generate both a theoretical and practical discussion on decentralized governance and its capacity to promote peace, prevent conflict, advance human security and ensure greater governmental accountability. The Forum intended to review the theoretical strength of decentralization as a political tool and discuss how it can be properly implemented. Eight case studies were selected to be covered during the two days in order to draw conclusions and offer proposals for the future implementation of decentralization. The case of Catalonia and the decentralized experience of Spain was given special attention, as an example of successful decentralization. The other cases presented achievements and challenges and prompted discussions on both the validity and universality of decentralization as a way to promote and preserve peace. Topics such as ethnic and territorial divisions, democratic accountability, financial decentralization and distribution, resource sharing, and external implementation of decentralization through peace processes were discussed.

Les intermédiaires, acteurs clés des réseaux Internet transnationaux. Le cas des cybercafés de Bamako

Contrairement à ce que prônent les auteurs des « discours d'accompagnement » de l'Internet, les échanges par courriel sont souvent médiatisés. C'est du moins ce que l'on observe dans les cybercafés de Bamako, au Mali, où de nombreux acteurs prennent place entre les clients de ces établissements et leurs correspondants. Cet article vise à présenter le profil de ces intermédiaires, leur place dans les réseaux transnationaux et à inventorier les « capitaux » - sociaux, symboliques et économiques - que cette fonction leur confère. Car, en interprétant ce rôle de « passeur », ces intermédiaires se positionnent comme des acteurs incontournables. Cependant, les bénéfices obtenus ne sont pas forcément ceux auxquels on pourrait s'attendre : les capitaux symboliques tendent, en effet, à l'emporter sur les gains sociaux.
