A study was carried out at five upazillas (Dumuria, Fakirhat, Pirojpur sadar, Gopalgonj sadar and Kalia) of five southern districts of Khulna, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Gopalgonj and Narail to understand the comparative production performance and any effect on soil quality in case of year-round golda (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), alternate prawn-paddy and year-round paddy farming. A direct interview of 55 farmers was taken, using pretested questionnaire, and soil samples were taken from selected farms before and after each crop. Among the five upazillas, farmers in Gopalgonj sadar and Kalia are not practicing year-round golda. Rotational golda-paddy farming has been recorded to result in maximum profit, with the highest of Tk. 310,912/ha/year in 2003 at Dumuria. Only paddy farming is less profitable than other two cropping patterns, irrespective of study sites. The nutrient status of soil in rotational golda and paddy farming has been found improved, compared to that of only golda or paddy farming.

Control and management of Uganda fishery resources has been hindered by among other factors the multispecies nature of the resource and the characteristic behaviour of the fishing communities. Fishermen have both genuine and uncompromising attitudes as to why they carry out certain fishing technologies. All fishing activities aim at maximizing the catches or profits while others may fish on a small scale for subsistence. Sensitizing the fisherfolk on the appropriate fishing technologies, importance of a well regulated fishery exploitation and their participation in control and management of the resource would enhance or lead to increased and sustainable fish production. Socio-economics of fishing technologies were therefore examined using prepared questionnaires and reasons why the fishing communities behave the way they do established

Self-assembled structures capable of mediating electron transfer are an attractive scientific and technological goal. Therefore, systematic variants of SH3-Cytochrome b(562) fusion proteins were designed to make amyloid fibers displaying heme-b(562) electron transfer complexes. TEM and AFM data show that fiber morphology responds systematically to placement of b(562) within the fusion proteins. UV-vis spectroscopy shows that, for the fusion proteins under test, only half the fiber-borne b(562) binds heme with high affinity. Cofactor binding also improves the AFM imaging properties and changes the fiber morphology through changes in cytochrome conformation. Systematic observations and measurements of fiber geometry suggest that longitudinal registry of subfilaments within the fiber, mediated by the interaction and conformation of the displayed proteins and their interaction with surfaces, gives rise to the observed morphologies, including defects and kinks. Of most interest is the role of small molecule modulation of fiber structure and mechanical stability. A minimum complexity model is proposed to capture and explain the fiber morphology in the light of these results. Understanding the complex interplay between these factors will enable a fiber design that supports longitudinal electron transfer.

The sequences of the 16S rRNA genes from 38 strains of the family Thermaceae were compared by alignment analysis. The genus-specific and species-specific base substitutions or base deletions (signature positions) were found in three hypervariable regions (in the helices 6, 10 and 17). The differentiation of secondary structures of the high variable regions in the 5' end (38-497) containing several signature positions further supported the concept. Based on the comparisons of the secondary structures in the segments of 16S rRNAs, a key to the species of the family Thermaceae was proposed. As the intelligence and the functionality of microrobots increase, there is a growing need to incorporate sensors into these robots. In order to limit the outer dimensions of these microsystems, this research investigates sensors that can be integrated efficiently into microactuators. Here, a pneumatic piston-cylinder microactuator with an integrated inductive position sensor was developed. The main advantage of pneumatic actuators is their high force and power density at microscale. The outside diameter of the actuator is 1.3 mm and the length is 15 mm. The stroke of the actuator is 12 mm, and the actuation force is 1 N at a supply pressure of 1.5 MPa. The position sensor consists of two coils wound around the cylinder of the actuator. The measurement principle is based on the change in coupling factor between the coils as the piston moves in the actuator. The sensor is extremely small since one layer of 25 μm copper wire is sufficient to achieve an accuracy of 10 μm over the total stroke. Position tests with a PI controller and a sliding mode controller showed that the actuator is able to position with an accuracy up to 30 μm. Such positioning systems offer great opportunities for all devices that need to control a large number of degrees of freedom in a restricted volume. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper discusses user target intention recognition algorithms for pointing - clicking tasks to reduce users' pointing time and difficulty. Predicting targets by comparing the bearing angles to targets proposed as one of the first algorithms [1] is compared with a Kalman Filter prediction algorithm. Accuracy and sensitivity of prediction are used as performance criteria. The outcomes of a standard point and click experiment are used for performance comparison, collected from both able-bodied and impaired users. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The mitochondrial genome complete sequence of Achalinus meiguensis was reported for the first time in the present study. The complete mitochondrial genome of A. meiguensis is 17239 bp in length and contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA, 2 rRNA, and 2 non-coding regions (Control regions). On the basis of comparison with the other complete mitochondrial sequences reported, we explored the characteristic of structure and evolution. For example, duplication control regions independently occurred in the evolutionary history of reptiles; the pseudo-tRNA of snakes occurred in the Caenophidia; snake is shorter than other vertebrates in the length of tRNA because of the truncations of T psi C arm (less than 5 bp) and "DHU" arm. The phylogenic analysis by MP and BI analysis showed that the phylogenetic position of A. meiguensis was placed in Caenophidia as a sister group to other advanced snakes with the exclusion of Acrochordus granulatus which was rooted in the Caenophidia. Therefore we suggested that the subfamily Xenodermatinae, which contains A. meiguensis, should be raised to a family rank or higher rank. At the same time, based on the phylogenic statistic test, the tree of Bayesian was used for estimating the divergence time. The results showed that the divergence time between Henophidia and Caenophidia was 109.50 Mya; 106.18 Mya for divergence between Acrochordus granulatus and the other snakes of the Caenophidia; the divergence time of A. meiguensis was 103 Mya, and Viperidae diverged from the unilateral of Elapidae and Colubridae was 96.06 Mya.
