A new Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) reflectance spectrometer was successfully designed, making use of a Janis Industries ST-400 sample cryostat, IR Labs bolometer, and Briiker IFS 66 v/S spectrometer. Two of the noteworthy features include an in situ gold evaporator and internal reference path, both of which allow for the experiment to progress with a completely undisturbed sample position. As tested, the system was designed to operate between 4.2 K and 325 K over a frequency range of 60 - 670 cm~^. This frequency range can easily be extended through the addition of appUcable detectors. Tests were performed on SrTiOa, a highly ionic incipient ferroelectric insulator with a well known reflectance. The presence and temperatmre dependence of the lowest frequency "soft" mode were measured, as was the presence of the other two infrared modes. During the structural phase transition from cubic to tetragonal perovskite, the splitting of the second phonon mode was also observed. All of the collected data indicate good agreement with previous measurements, with a minor discrepency between the actual and recorded sample temperatures.

Fermi patches in quasi-two dimensional charge density waves (CDW) have not described the connection to superconductivity (SC) according to theory adequately at this point in time. The connection between CDW and SC in the quasi-two dimensional material CuxTiSe2 is an interesting one which might reveal mechanisms in unconventional superconductors. A previous Brock graduate student grew crystals of CuxTiSe2. The precise doping of the samples was not known. In order to determine the doping parameter x in CuxTiSe2, a sensitive resistivity measurement system was necessary. A new resistivity measurement system was designed and implemented utilizing an Infrared Labs HDL-10 He3 cryostat. By comparing with data from the literature, doping of two samples was investigated using the new measurement system and a Quantum Design Magnetic Property Measurement System (MPMS). Methods for determining the doping revealed that the old resistivity system would not be able to determine the CDW transition temperature of highly doped samples or doping for elongated samples due to electronic noise. Doping in one sample was found to be between x=0.06 and x=0.065. Values of doping in the second sample had a discrepancy but could be explained by incorrect sample orientation.

This paper addresses the question of whether R&D should be carried out by an independent research unit or be produced in-house by the firm marketing the innovation. We define two organizational structures. In an integrated structure, the firm that markets the innovation also carries out and finances research leading to the innovation. In an independent structure, the firm that markets the innovation buys it from an independent research unit which is financed externally. We compare the two structures under the assumption that the research unit has some private information about the real cost of developing the new product. When development costs are negatively correlated with revenues from the innovation, the integrated structure dominates. The independent structure dominates in the opposite case.

Most adaptive linearization circuits for the nonlinear amplifier have a feedback loop that returns the output signal oj'tne eunplifier to the lineurizer. The loop delay of the linearizer most be controlled precisely so that the convergence of the linearizer should be assured lot this Letter a delay control circuit is presented. It is a delay lock loop (ULL) with it modified early-lute gate and can he easily applied to a DSP implementation. The proposed DLL circuit is applied to an adaptive linearizer with the use of a polynomial predistorter, and the simulalion for a 16-QAM signal is performed. The simulation results show that the proposed DLL eliminates the delay between the reference input signal and the delayed feedback signal of the linearizing circuit perfectly, so that the predistorter polynomial coefficients converge into the optimum value and a high degree of linearization is achieved

A dual-port dual-polarized compact microstrip antenna for avoiding cross coupling between the two frequency bands is proposed and analyzed. This antenna offers channel isolation better than 25 dB, and is more compact compared to a conventional rectangular patch. Analytical equations for calculating the resonant frequencies at both ports are also presented. The theoretical calculations are verified using experimental results

The synthesis of dimethyl acetals of carbonyl compounds such as cyclohexanone, acetophenone, and benzophenone has successfully been carried out by the reaction between ketones and methanol using different solid acid catalysts. The strong influence of the textural properties of the catalysts such as acid amount and adsorption properties (surface area and pore volume) determine the catalytic activity. The molecular size of the reactants and products determine the acetalization ability of a particular ketone. The hydrophobicity of the various rare earth exchanged Mg–Y zeolites, K-10 montmorillonite clay, and cerium exchanged montmorillonite (which shows maximum activity) is more determinant than the number of active sites present on the catalyst. The optimum number of acidic sites as well as dehydrating ability of Ce3+-montmorillonite and K-10 montmorillonite clays and various rare earth exchanged Mg–Y zeolites seem to work well in shifting the equilibrium to the product side.

The design and performance of a stepped slot printed monopole antenna in the ultrawideband is presented in this article. Multiple resonances generated by the stepped slot geometry are matched in the ultrawideband using a modified microstrip feed. The impedance bandwidth (SWR < 2) of the antenna is from 3 to 11 GHz. Radiation patterns are stable and omnidirectional with appreciable gain throughout the band. Performance of the antenna is also analyzed in the time domain, which reveals good pulse handling capabilities. Compact geometry of the antenna allows easy commercial deployment.

The design of a compact, single feed, dual frequency dual polarized and electronically reconfigurable microstrip antenna is presented in this paper. A square patch loaded with a hexagonal slot having extended slot arms constitutes the fundamental structure of the antenna. The tuning of the two resonant frequencies is realized by varying the effective electrical length of the slot arms by embedding varactor diodes across the slots. A high tuning range of 34.43% (1.037–1.394 GHz) and 9.27% (1.359–1.485 GHz) is achieved for the two operating frequencies respectively, when the bias voltage is varied from 0 to −30 V. The salient feature of this design is that it uses no matching networks even though the resonant frequencies are tuned in a wide range with good matching below −10 dB. The antenna has an added advantage of size reduction up to 80.11% and 65.69% for the two operating frequencies compared to conventional rectangular patches.

Development of organic molecules that exhibit selective interactions with different biomolecules has immense significance in biochemical and medicinal applications. In this context, our main objective has been to design a few novel functionaIized molecules that can selectively bind and recognize nucleotides and DNA in the aqueous medium through non-covalent interactions. Our strategy was to design novel cycIophane receptor systems based on the anthracene chromophore linked through different bridging moieties and spacer groups. It was proposed that such systems would have a rigid structure with well defined cavity, wherein the aromatic chromophore can undergo pi-stacking interactions with the guest molecules. The viologen and imidazolium moieties have been chosen as bridging units, since such groups, can in principle, could enhance the solubility of these derivatives in the aqueous medium as well as stabilize the inclusion complexes through electrostatic interactions. We synthesized a series of water soluble novel functionalized cyclophanes and have investigated their interactions with nucleotides, DNA and oligonucIeotides through photophysical. chiroptical, electrochemical and NMR techniques. Results indicate that these systems have favorable photophysical properties and exhibit selective interactions with ATP, GTP and DNA involving electrostatic. hydrophobic and pi-stacking interactions inside the cavity and hence can have potential use as probes in biology.
