Research on structure and magnetic properties of polynuclear metal complexes to understand the structural and chemical factors governing the electronic exchange coupling mediated by multi-atom bridging ligands is of growing interest. Hydrothermal treatment of Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O with N-(4-carboxyphenyl)iminodiacetic acid N-4(H(3)CPIDA)] at 150 degrees C yielded a 3D coordination polymer of general formula Ni-3{N-4( CPIDA)}(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 6H(2)O (1). An analogous network of general formula Co-3{N-3(CPIDA)}(2)(H2O)(3)]center dot 3H(2)O (2) was synthesized using N-(3-carboxyphenyl) iminodiacetic acid N-3(H(3)CPIDA)] in combination with Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O under identical reaction condition. Both the complexes contain trinuclear secondary building unit, and crystallized in monoclinic system with space groups C2/c (1) and P2(1)/c (2), respectively. Variable temperature magnetic characterization of these complexes in the temperature range of 2-300 K indicated the presence of overall ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic behavior for 1 and 2, respectively. Density functional theory calculations (B3LYP functional) were performed for further insight on the trinuclear units to provide a qualitative theoretical interpretation on the overall magnetic behavior of the complexes 1 and 2. The activity of NiO in NiO-MgO rock salt solid solution has been measured at 1300 K by employing a solid-state galvanic cell: Pt,Ni+ NiO||(CaO)ZrO2||Ni + (Nix,Mgl-x)O, Pt. A high-density tube of Zr02-15 mol% CaO has been used as the solid electrolyte for the emf measurements. The activities of the component oxides in the rock salt solid solution exhibit negative deviation from ideality at the temperature of investigation. The solid solution obeys regular solution behavior at 1300 K. The value of the regular solution parameter is found to be -12000 ((l000) J mol-1. The composition dependence of ΔGEx obtained in this study agrees reasonably well with the calorimetric data reported in the literature for NiO-MgO solid solution.

A simple technique for the measurement of the beam shape parameters of pulsed lasers, with just a single pulse of the laser is described. It involves the use of several beam dividers inclined at very small angles to the beam axis, reflecting the beam back to a screen or a phosphor placed near the exit of the laser. The reflected images are then photographed by a camera to yield the beam parameters.

In this paper, a different type of cross flow dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor was designed and tested. Here the gas flow is perpendicular to the barrier discharge electrode. Discharge plasma was utilized to oxidize NO contained in the exhaust gas to NO2 and subsequent NO2 removal can be improved using an adsorbent system. A detailed study of DeNO(X) in a stationary diesel engine exhaust was carried out using pulsed electrical discharges/adsorbent processes. Activated alumina (Al2O3) and MS-13x were used as adsorbents at room temperature. The main emphasis is laid on the removal of NOX from the filtered diesel engine exhaust. In filtered exhaust environment, the cross flow reactor along with adsorbent exhibits a superior performance with regard to NOX removal when compared to that with axial flow of gas. In this paper we bring out a relative comparison of discharge plasma and plasma-adsorbent process at various gas flow rates, ranging from 2 l/min to 25 l/min. The discharge plasma-adsorbent assisted barrier discharge reactor has shown promising results in NOX removal at high flow rates.

Digoxigenin (DIG)-labeled DNA probe was developed for a sensitive and rapid detection of the Tobacco streak virus (TSV) isolates in India by dot-blot and tissue print hybridization techniques. DIG-labeled DNA probe complementary to the coat protein (CP) region of TSV sunflower isolate was designed and used to detect the TSV presence at field levels. Dot-blot hybridization was used to check a large number of TSV isolates with a single probe. In addition, a sensitivity of the technique was examined with the different sample extraction methods. Another technique, the tissue blot hybridization offered a simple, reliable procedure and did not require a sample processing. Thus, both non-radioactively labeled probe techniques could facilitate the sample screening during TSV outbreaks and offer an advantage in quarantine services.

Reactions of group 6 metal carbonyls with bis(pyrazolyl) phosphazenes yield metal tricarbonyl complexes, [M(CO)3.L] [L = N3P3Ph4 (3, 5-Me2C3HN2)2 (1) or N3P3(MeNCH2CH2O)2 (3,5-Me2C3HN2)2(4)]. The structure of the complex [Mo(CO)3.1], determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis, shows that the (pyrazolyl) phosphazene acts as a tridentate ligand; the two pyridinic pyrazolyl nitrogen atoms and a phosphazene ring nitrogen atom are coordinated to the metal. A similar structure is proposed for the complexes [M(CO)3.4] (M = Mo or W] on the basis of their spectroscopic data.

The performance of reinforced earth structures depends on the mobilization of interfacial shearing resistance between soil and reinforcement. This criterion typically eliminates the use of fine-grained soil as a backfill material in reinforced earth structures. Considering the distribution of induced interfacial shear stress in soil around the surface of the reinforcement, it has been shown that only a thin zone of frictional material around the reinforcement is required to mobilize almost full interfacial shearing resistance of sand. Six series of pullout tests have been conducted, with different types of reinforcement, to study the effect of thickness of sand (frictional material) around the reinforcement on the pullout resistance. Sawdust and kaolin clay have been used as bulk backfill material, providing the soil with negligible friction. With low-friction-strength soil as bulk material, a 15-mm thickness of sand around the reinforcement is required to increase the interfacial shearing resistance to that with sand as the bulk material. With this new technique, low-frictional fine-grained soils can be used as bulk backfill material in reinforced earth constructions.

An asymmetric binary search switching technique for a successive approximation register (SAR) ADC is presented, and trade-off between switching energy and conversion cycles is discussed. Without using any additional switches, the proposed technique consumes 46% less switching energy, for a small input swing (0.5 V-ref (P-P)), as compared to the last reported efficient switching technique in literature for an 8-bit SAR ADC. For a full input swing (2 V-ref (P-P)), the proposed technique consumes 16.5% less switching energy.

A simple method is described to combine a modern function generator and a digital oscilloscope to configure a setup that can directly measure the amplitude frequency response of a system. This is achieved by synchronously triggering both instruments, with the function generator operated in the ``Linear-Sweep'' frequency mode, while the oscilloscope is operated in the ``Envelope'' acquisition mode. Under these conditions, the acquired envelopes directly correspond to the (input and output signal) spectra, whose ratio yields the amplitude frequency response. The method is easy to configure, automatic, time-efficient, and does not require any external control or interface or programming. This method is ideally suited to impart hands-on experience in sweep frequency response measurements, demonstrate resonance phenomenon in transformer windings, explain the working principle of an impedance analyzer, practically exhibit properties of network functions, and so on. The proposed method is an inexpensive alternative to existing commercial equipment meant for this job and is also an effective teaching aid. Details of its implementation, along with some practical measurements on an actual transformer, are presented.
