We present results from three-dimensional protein folding simulations in the HP-model on ten benchmark problems. The simulations are executed by a simulated annealing-based algorithm with a time-dependent cooling schedule. The neighbourhood relation is determined by the pull-move set. The results provide experimental evidence that the maximum depth D of local minima of the underlying energy landscape can be upper bounded by D < n(2/3). The local search procedure employs the stopping criterion (In/delta)(D/gamma) where m is an estimation of the average number of neighbouring conformations, gamma relates to the mean of non-zero differences of the objective function for neighbouring conformations, and 1-delta is the confidence that a minimum conformation has been found. The bound complies with the results obtained for the ten benchmark problems. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper discusses the approaches and techniques used to build a realistic numerical model to analyse the cooling phase of the injection moulding process. The procedures employed to select an appropriate mesh and the boundary and initial conditions for the problem are discussed and justified. The final model is validated using direct comparisons with experimental results generated in an earlier study. The model is shown to be a useful tool for further studies aimed at optimising the cooling phase of the injection moulding process. Using the numerical model provides additional information relating to changes in conditions throughout the process, which otherwise could not be deduced or assessed experimentally. These results, and other benefits related to the use of the model, are also discussed in the paper. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Some critical avionic systems require cooling air via vents on the side of the aircraft, thus creating leakage points for high-intensity electromagnetic radiation. This paper presents a novel application of high-intensity radiated field (HIRF) shielding using a rectangular waveguide array, while maintaining cooling airflow requirements. Signal attenuation versus frequency and depth of the array has been calculated using closed-form equations. The simulation and measurement results are in good agreement with the calculated values. Crystal structures of two examples of an important class of ionic liquids, 1,3-dimethylimidazolium and 1,2,3-triethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The anion in the 1,3-dimethylimidazolium example (mp 22 degreesC), adopts an unusual cis-geometry constrained by bifurcated cation-anion C-H...O hydrogen-bonds from the imidazolium cation to the anion resulting in the formation of fluorous layers within the solid-state structure. In contrast, in the 1,2,3-triethylimidazolium salt (mp 57 degreesC), the ions are discretely packed with only weak C-H...O contacts between the ions close to the van der Waals separation distances, and with the anion adopting the twisted conformation observed for all other examples from the limited set of organic bis( trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide crystal structures. The structures are discussed in terms of the favorable physical properties that bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide anions impart in ionic liquids.

A comprehensively C-14 AMS dated pollen and chironomid record from Boundary Stream Tarn provides the first chironomid-derived temperature reconstruction to quantify temperature change during Lateglacial times (17,500-10,000 cal yr BP) in the Southern Alps, New Zealand. The records indicate a ca 1000-year disruption to the Lateglacial warming trend and an overall cooling consistent with the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR). The main interval of chironomid-inferred summer temperature depression (similar to 2-3 degrees C) lasted about 700 years during the ACR. Following this cooling event, both proxies indicate a warming step to temperatures slightly cooler than present during the Younger Dryas chronozone (12,900-11,500 cal yr BP). These results highlight a direct linkage between Antarctica and mid-latitude terrestrial climate systems and the largely asynchronous nature of the interhemispheric climate system during the last glacial transition. The greater magnitude of temperature changes shown by the chironomid record is attributed to the response of the proxies to differences in seasonal climate with chironomids reflecting summer temperature and vegetation more strongly controlled by duration of winter or by minimum temperatures. These differences imply stronger seasonality at times during the Lateglacial, which may explain some of the variability between other paleoclimate records from New Zealand and have wider implications for understanding differences between proxy records for abrupt climate change.
