Objective: The present study is to evaluate the antiulcer effect of hydroalcoholic (70%) extract of Terminalia chebula fruit. Materials and methods: Aspirin, ethanol and cold restraint stress-induced ulcer methods in rats were used for the study. The effects of the extract on gastric secretions, pH, total and free acidity using pylorus ligated methods were also evaluated. Results: Animals pretreated with doses of 200 and 500 mg/kg hydroalcoholic extract showed significant reduction in lesion index, total affected area and percentage of lesion in comparison with control group (P < 0.05 and P < 0.01) in the aspirin, ethanol and cold restraint stress-induced ulcer models. Similarly extracts increased mucus production in aspirin and ethanol-induced ulcer models. At doses of 200 and 500 mg/kg of T. chebula extract showed antisecretory activity in pylorus ligated model, which lead to a reduction in the gastric juice volume, free acidity, total acidity, and significantly increased gastric pH. Discussion and conclusion: These findings indicate that hydroalcoholic extract of the fruit T. chebula displays potential antiulcerogenic activity. This activity thus lends pharmacological credence to the suggested use of the plant as a natural remedy in the treatment or management of ulcer.

We study the accretion of modified Chaplygin gas upon different types of black holes. Modified Chaplygin gas is one of the best candidates for a combined model of dark matter and dark energy. In addition, from a field theoretical point of view the modified Chaplygin gas model is equivalent to that of a scalar field having a self-interacting potential. We formulate the equations related to both spherical accretion and disc accretion, and respective winds. The corresponding numerical solutions of the flow, particularly of velocity, are presented and analysed. We show that the accretion-wind system of modified Chaplygin gas dramatically alters the wind solutions, producing faster winds, upon changes in physical parameters, while accretion solutions qualitatively remain unaffected. This implies that modified Chaplygin gas is more prone to produce outflow which is the natural consequence of the dark energy into the system.

Black carbon (BC) aerosol mass concentrations measured using an aethalometer at Anantapur, a semi-arid tropical station in the southern part of peninsular India, from August 2006 to July 2007 are analyzed. Seasonal and diurnal variations of BC in relation to changes in the regional meteorological conditions have been studied along with the mass fraction of BC to the total aerosol mass concentration (M-t) and fine particle mass (FPM) concentration in different months. The data collected during the study period shows that the annual average BC mass concentration at Anantapur is 1.97 +/- 0.12 mu g m(-3). Seasonal variations of BC aerosol mass concentration showed high during the dry (winter and summer) seasons and low during the post-monsoon followed by the monsoon seasons. Diurnal variations of BC aerosols attain a gradual build up in BC concentration from morning and a sharp peak occurs between 07:00 and 09:00 h almost an hour after local sunrise and a broad nocturnal peak from 19:00 to 21:00 h with a minimum in noon hours. The ratio of BC to the fine particle mass concentration was high during the dry season and low during the monsoon season. The regression analysis between BC mass concentration and wind speed indicates that, with increase in wind speeds the BC mass concentrations would decrease and vice-versa. Aerosol BC mass concentration shows a significant positive correlation with total mass concentration (M-t) and aerosol optical depth (ACID, tau(p)) at 500 nm. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Competition between seeds within a fruit for parental resources is described using one-locus-two-allele models. While a normal allele leads to an equitable distribution of resources between seeds (a situation which also corresponds to the parental optimum), the selfish allele is assumed to cause the seed carrying it to usurp a higher proportion of the resources. The outcome of competition between selfish alleles is also assumed to lead to an asymmetric distribution of resources, the winner being chosen randomly. Conditions for the spread of an initially rare selfish allele and the optimal resource allocation corresponding to the evolutionarily stable strategy, derived for species with n-seeded fruits, are in accordance with expectations based on Hamiltons inclusive fitness criteria. Competition between seeds is seen to be most intense when there are only two seeds, and decreases with increasing number of seeds, suggesting that two-seeded fruits would be rarer than one-seeded or many-seeded ones. Available data from a large number of plant species are consistent with this prediction of the model.

[1] During a comprehensive aerosol field campaign, simultaneous measurements were made of aerosol spectral optical depths, black carbon mass concentration (M-b), total (M-t) and size segregated aerosol mass concentrations over an urban continental location, Bangalore (13 degreesN, 77 degreesE, 960 m msl), in India. Large amounts of BC were observed; both in absolute terms and fraction of total mass (similar to11%) and submicron mass (similar to23%) implying a significantly low single scatter albedo. The aerosol visible optical depth (tau(p)) was in the range 0.24 to 0.45. Estimated surface forcing is as high as -23 W m(-2) and top of the atmosphere (TOA) forcing is +5 Wm(-2) during relatively cleaner periods (tau(p) similar to 0.24). The net atmospheric absorption translates to an atmospheric heating of similar to0.8 K day(-1) for cleaner periods and similar to1.5 K day(-1) for less cleaner periods (tau(p) similar to 0.45). Our observations raise several issues, which may have impacts to regional climate and monsoon.

Electrochemically deposited Cu-Ni black coatings on molybdenum substrate from ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) bath solution are shown to exhibit good optical properties (alpha = 0.94, epsilon = 0.09). The deposit is characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cu is present in metallic and +2 oxidation states in the as-prepared Cu-Ni black coating, whereas Ni2+ as well as Ni3+ species are observed in the same coating. Cu and Ni are observed in their metallic state after 10 and 20 min sputtering. X-ray initiated Auger electron spectroscopy (XAES) of Cu and Ni also agrees well with XPS investigations. A group of high-order finite-difference schemes for incompressible flow was implemented to simulate the evolution of turbulent spots in channel flows. The long-time accuracy of these schemes was tested by comparing the evolution of small disturbances to a plane channel flow against the growth rate predicted by linear theory. When the perturbation is the unstable eigenfunction at a Reynolds number of 7500, the solution grows only if there are a comparatively large number of (equispaced) grid points across the channel. Fifth-order upwind biasing of convection terms is found to be worse than second-order central differencing. But, for a decaying mode at a Reynolds number of 1000, about a fourth of the points suffice to obtain the correct decay rate. We show that this is due to the comparatively high gradients in the unstable eigenfunction near the walls. So, high-wave-number dissipation of the high-order upwind biasing degrades the solution especially. But for a well-resolved calculation, the weak dissipation does not degrade solutions even over the very long times (O(100)) computed in these tests. Some new solutions of spot evolution in Couette flows with pressure gradients are presented. The approach to self-similarity at long times can be seen readily in contour plots.

Using the fact the BTZ black hole is a quotient of AdS(3) we show that classical string propagation in the BTZ background is integrable. We construct the flat connection and its monodromy matrix which generates the non-local charges. From examining the general behaviour of the eigen values of the monodromy matrix we determine the set of integral equations which constrain them. These equations imply that each classical solution is characterized by a density function in the complex plane. For classical solutions which correspond to geodesics and winding strings we solve for the eigen values of the monodromy matrix explicitly and show that geodesics correspond to zero density in the complex plane. We solve the integral equations for BMN and magnon like solutions and obtain their dispersion relation. We show that the set of integral equations which constrain the eigen values of the monodromy matrix can be identified with the continuum limit of the Bethe equations of a twisted SL(2, R) spin chain at one loop. The Landau-Lifshitz equations from the spin chain can also be identified with the sigma model equations of motion.

Three groups of poly(mannitol citric dicarboxylate) [p(MCD)] copolyesters were synthesized by catalyst-free melt condensation of mannitol with acids. The resulting copolyesters were designated as poly(mannitol citric succinate) [p(MCSu)], poly(mannitol citric adipate) [p(MCA)], poly(mannitol citric sebacate) [p(MCS)]. The polymers were characterized by FTIR, (1)H NMR, and DSC analysis. The synthesized p(MCD) polymers exhibit glass transition temperatures ranging from 16.5 to 58.58 degrees C. The mechanical, degradation properties, and the drug-releasing characteristics of these polymers were investigated. It was observed that the mechanical properties of the p(MCD) polymers cover a wide range with Young's modulus of the polymer varying from 12.25 to 660 MPa. Hydrolytic degradation of all polymers was investigated by incubating polymer discs in PBS and the hydrolytic degradation of p(MCD) polymers followed the order, p(MCSu) > p(MCA) > p(MCS). This was attributed to the number of -CH(2)(units in the dicarboxylic monomers. The release of model drug compounds from the p(MCD) polymer discs was also studied. POLYM. ENG. A novel PCR based assay was devised to specifically detect contamination of any Salmonella serovar in milk, fruit juice and ice-cream without pre-enrichment. This method utilizes primers against hilA gene which is conserved in all Salmonella serovars and absent from the close relatives of Salmonella. An optimized protocol, in terms time and money, is provided for the reduction of PCR contaminants from milk, ice-cream and juice through the use of routine laboratory chemicals. The simplicity, efficiency (time taken 3-4 h) and sensitivity (to about 5-10 CFU/ml) of this technique confers a unique advantage over other previously used time consuming detection techniques. This technique does not involve pre-enrichment of the samples or extensive sample processing, which was a pre-requisite in most of the other reported studies. Hence, this assay can be ideal for adoption, after further fine tuning, by food quality control for timely detection of Salmonella contamination as well as other food-borne pathogens (with species specific primers) in food especially milk, ice-cream and fruit juice.
