The genus Coleodactylus (Sphaerodactylinae, Gekkota) revisited: A molecular phylogenetic perspective

Nucleotide sequence data from a mitochondrial gene (16S) and two nuclear genes (c-mos, RAG-1) were used to evaluate the monophyly of the genus Coleodactylus, to provide the first phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships among its species in a cladistic framework, and to estimate the relative timing, of species divergences. Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian analyses of the combined data sets retrieved Coleodactylus as a monophyletic genus, although weakly Supported. Species were recovered as two genetically and morphological distinct clades, with C. amazonicus populations forming the sister taxon to the meridionalis group (C. brachystoma, C. meridionalis, C. natalensis, and C. septentrionalis). Within this group, C. septentrionalis was placed as the sister taxon to a clade comprising the rest of the species, C. meridionalis was recovered as the sister species to C. brachystoma, and C natalensis was found nested within C. meridionalis. Divergence time estimates based on penalized likelihood and Bayesian dating methods do not Support the previous hypothesis based on the Quaternary rain forest fragmentation model proposed to explain the diversification of the genus. The basal cladogenic event between major lineages of Coleodactylus was estimated to have occurred in the late Cretaceous (72.6 +/- 1.77 Mya), approximately at the same point in time than the other genera of Sphaerodactylinae diverged from each other. Within the meridionalis group, the split between C. septentrionalis and C. brachystoma + C. meridionalis was placed in the Eocene (46.4 +/- 4.22 Mya), and the divergence between C. brachystoma and C. meridionalis was estimated to have occurred in the Oligocene (29.3 +/- 4.33 Mya). Most intraspecific cladogenesis occurred through Miocene to Pliocene, and only for two conspecific samples and for C. natalensis could a Quaternary differentiation be assumed (1.9 +/- 1.3 Mya). Advanced Building Energy Data Visualization is a way to detect performance problems in commercialbuildings. By placing sensors in a building that collects data from example, air temperature and electricalpower, then makes it possible to calculate the data in Data Visualization software. This softwaregenerates visual diagrams so the building manager or building operator can see if for example thepower consumption is to high.A first step (before sensors are installed in a building) to see how the energy consumption is in abuilding can be to use a Benchmarking Tool. There is a number of Benchmarking Tools that is availablefor free on the Internet. Each tool have a bit different approach, but they all show how much energyconsumption there is in a building compared to other similar buildings.In this study a new web design for the benchmarking tool CalARCH has been developed. CalARCHis developed at the Berkeley Lab in Berkeley, California, USA. CalARCH uses data collected only frombuildings in California, and is only for comparing buildings in California with other similar buildingsin the state.Five different versions of the web site were made. Then a web survey was done to determine whichversion would be the best for CalARCH. The results showed that Version 5 and Version 3 was the best.Then a new version was made, based on these two versions. This study was made at the LawrenceBerkeley Laboratory.

Investigações recentes revelam que o stress é considerado um dos indicadores de mau-estar docente (Jesus, 2005). Para lidar com estas novas realidades, os professores necessitam de controlar/lidar com o stress e as suas emoções nas circunstâncias mais adversas. Desta forma, o principal objectivo deste estudo foi perceber de que forma a percepção emocional e a inteligência emocional são importantes para gerir problemas de stress ocupacional. Para tal, utilizaram-se quatro instrumentos diferentes: O teste de regulação emocional de Berkeley (Gross & John, 2003), o teste de expressividade Emocional de Berkeley (Gross & John, 2003), a escala de meta-conhecimento dos estados emocionais a Trait Meta-Mood Scale” (TMMS 24) (Salovey & Mayer 1990) e a escala de avaliação do grau de vulnerabilidade ao stress a 23QVS (Serra, 2000). Estes testes foram aplicados numa sessão única a 292 professores dos 2.º e 3.º Ciclos do Ensino Básico, do distrito do Funchal, sendo 64,7% do sexo feminino e 35,3% do sexo masculino de diferentes grupos disciplinares. Analisou-se a influência de algumas variáveis como o género, a idade, estado civil, número de filhos, habilitações, anos de serviço, nível de ensino que lecciona e o grupo disciplinar na explicação da percepção emocional, da inteligência emocional e da vulnerabilidade ao stress. Realizaram-se igualmente os estudos correlacionais das diferentes medidas utilizadas. Os resultados mostraram que os professores que apresentam maiores capacidades para clarificar e regular as suas próprias emoções são aqueles que apresentam menor vulnerabilidade ao stress. Para finalizar destacaremos as implicações que este estudo traz para a intervenção em contextos educativos.

Este estudo teve como objetivos compreender a inteligência emocional e o engagement como fator de proteção face ao burnout, bem como estudar as relações entre a inteligência emocional, o engagement e o burnout. Mayer e Salovey (1997) definem a inteligência emocional como a capacidade de perceber, avaliar e de expressar as emoções, baseada em quatro níveis: capacidade de perceber, usar, conhecer e regular as emoções para facilitar o pensamento. O engagement é um construto recente a nível mundial, integrado na corrente da psicologia positiva. O oposto ao engagement é o Burnout, expressão inglesa para designar aquilo que deixou de funcionar por exaustão de energia (França, 1987, citado por, Carlotto,2012). A amostra foi constituída por 250 professores do 2º ciclo (26.4%), 3º ciclo (57.2%) e Secundário (16.4 %), do género feminino (70.4%) e do masculino (29.6%), da Região Autónoma da Madeira (RAM). Como instrumentos, utilizámos um Questionário de Dados Sócio-Demográficos e Profissionais, o Trait Meta-Mood Scale (TMMS-24), o Questionário de Expressividade e o de Regulação Emocional de Berkeley, o Questionário de Engagement e o Inventário de Burnout de Maslach (MBI). Para confirmar a relação estatística entre a inteligência emocional, o engagement e o burnout foi realizado um teste de correlação de Spearman entre as variáveis. Encontrámos correlações significativas entre a atenção emocional e o vigor, na dedicação, na absorção e na realização profissional. Relativamente à inteligência emocional dos professores, revelou-se como adequada em ambos os sexos nas três dimensões do construto. No que concerne ao engagement, os professores revelaram valores altos de vigor, dedicação e absorção. Concluiu-se que quanto maior a reparação das emoções, o vigor e a dedicação, menor é a exaustão emocional. Por outro lado, quanto maior a reavaliação das emoções, maior a exaustão emocional.

We show that the Hardy space H¹ anal (R2+ x R2+) can be identified with the class of functions f such that f and all its double and partial Hubert transforms Hk f belong to L¹ (R2). A basic tool used in the proof is the bisubharmonicity of |F|q, where F is a vector field that satisfies a generalized conjugate system of Cauchy-Riemann type.

The analysis of interactions between lineages at varying levels of genetic divergence can provide insights into the process of speciation through the accumulation of incompatible mutations. Ring species, and especially the Ensatina eschscholtzii system exemplify this approach. The plethodontid salamanders E. eschscholtzii xanthoptica and E. eschscholtzii platensis hybridize in the central Sierran foothills of California. We compared the genetic structure across two transects (southern and northern Calaveras Co.), one of which was resampled over 20 years, and examined diagnostic molecular markers (eight allozyme loci and mitochondrial DNA) and a diagnostic quantitative trait (color pattern). Key results across all studies were: (1) cline centers for all markers were coincident and the zones were narrow, with width estimates of 730 m to 2000 m; (2) cline centers at the northern Calaveras transect were coincident between 1981 and 2001, demonstrating repeatability over five generations; (3) there were very few if any putative F1s, but a relatively high number of backcrossed individuals in the central portion of transects: and (4) we found substantial linkage disequilibrium in all three studies and strong heterozygote deficit both in northern Calaveras, in 2001, and southern Calaveras. Both linkage disequilibrium and heterozygote deficit showed maximum values near the center of the zones. Using estimates of cline width and dispersal, we infer strong selection against hybrids. This is sufficient to promote accumulation of differences at loci that are neutral or under divergent selection, but would still allow for introgression of adaptive alleles. The evidence for strong but incomplete isolation across this centrally located contact is consistent with theory suggesting a gradual increase in postzygotic incompatibility between allopatric populations subject to divergent selection and reinforces the value of Ensatina as a system for the study of divergence and speciation at multiple stages. © 2005 The Society for the Study of Evolution. The objective of this work is to introduce and demonstrate the technical feasibility of the continuous flash fermentation for the production of butanol. The evaluation was carried out through mathematical modeling and computer simulation which is a good approach in such a process development stage. The process consists of three interconnected units, as follows: the fermentor, the cell retention system (tangential microfiltration) and the vacuum flash vessel (responsible for the continuous recovery of butanol from the broth). The efficiency of this process was experimentally validated for the ethanol fermentation, whose main results are also shown. With the proposed design the concentration of butanol in the fermentor was lowered from 11.3 to 7.8 g/l, which represented a significant reduction in the inhibitory effect. As a result, the final concentration of butanol was 28.2 g/l for a broth with 140 g/l of glucose. Solvents productivity and yield were, respectively, 11.7 g/l.h and 33.5 % for a sugar conversion of 95.6 %. Positive aspects about the flash fermentation process are the solvents productivity, the use of concentrated sugar solution and the final butanol concentration. The last two features can be responsible for a meaningful reduction in the distillation costs and result in environmental benefits due to lower quantities of wastewater generated by the process. © 2008 Berkeley Electronic Press. This paper proposes the application of computational intelligence techniques to assist complex problems concerning lightning in transformers. In order to estimate the currents related to lightning in a transformer, a neural tool is presented. ATP has generated the training vectors. The input variables used in Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) were the wave front time, the wave tail time, the voltage variation rate and the output variable is the maximum current in the secondary of the transformer. These parameters can define the behavior and severity of lightning. Based on these concepts and from the results obtained, it can be verified that the overvoltages at the secondary of transformer are also affected by the discharge waveform in a similar way to the primary side. By using the tool developed, the high voltage process in the distribution transformers can be mapped and estimated with more precision aiding the transformer project process, minimizing empirics and evaluation errors, and contributing to minimize the failure rate of transformers. © 2009 The Berkeley Electronic Press.
