Detecting Deceptive Movement in 1 vs. 1 Based on Global Body Displacement of a Rugby Player

A key to success in many sports stems from the ability to anticipate what a player is going to do next. In sporting duels such as a 1 vs. 1 in rugby, the attacker can try and beat the defender by using deceptive movement. Those strategies involve an evolution of the centre of mass (COM) in the medio-lateral plane, from a minimal state to maximal displacement just before the final reorientation. The aim of this work is to consider this displacement as a motion-gap, as outlined in Tau theory, as a potential variable that may specify deceptive movement and as a means of comparing anticipatory performance between mid-level players and novices in rugby. Using a virtual reality set-up, 8 mid-level rugby players (ML) and 8 novices (NOV) observed deceptive (DM) and non-deceptive movements (NDM). The global framework used an occlusion time paradigm with four occlusion times. Participants had to judge the final direction of the attacker after the different cuts-off. For each movement and at each occlusion time, we coupled the ability to predict the good final direction with the value of the COM displacement in the medio-lateral (COM M/L) plane or with the Tau of this parameter (Tau COM). Firstly, results show that the Tau COM is a more predictive optical variable than the simple COM M/L. Secondly, this optical variable Tau COM is used by both groups, and finally, with a specific methodology we showed that mid-level players have significantly better anticipatory ability than the novice group.

Estrogen Receptor-beta Affects the Prognosis of Human Malignant Mesothelioma

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is an asbestos-related neoplasm with poor prognosis, refractory to current therapies, the incidence of which is expected to increase in the next decades. Female gender was identified as a positive prognostic factor among other clinical and biological prognostic markers for malignant mesothelioma, yet a role of estrogen receptors (ERs) has not been studied. Our goal was to investigate ERs expression in malignant mesothelioma and to assess whether their expression correlates with prognosis. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed intense nuclear ER beta staining in normal pleura that was reduced in tumor tissues. Conversely, neither tumors nor normal pleura stained positive for ER alpha. Multivariate analysis of 78 malignant mesothelioma patients with pathologic stage, histologic type, therapy, sex, and age at diagnosis indicated that FRO expression is an independent prognostic factor of better survival. Moreover, studies in vitro confirmed that treatment with 17 beta-estradiol led to an ER beta-mediated inhibition of malignant mesothelioma cell proliferation as well as p21(CIP1) and p27(KIP1) up-regulation. Consistently cell growth was suppressed by ER beta overexpression, causing a G(2)-M-phase cell cycle arrest, paralleled by cyclin B1 and survivin down-regulation. Our data support the notion that ER beta acting as a tumor suppressor is of high potential relevance to prediction of disease progression and to therapeutic response of malignant mesothelioma patients. Early Results of the 3mm Spectral Line Survey toward the L1157 B1 Shocked Region

We have conducted a sensitive 3mm observation toward the shocked region, Lynds 1157 B1, which is an interaction spot between a molecular outflow and its ambient gas. We have successfully detected the CH3CHO, HCOOCH3, and HCOOH lines, as well as the CH2DOH line. The abundances of these molecules relative to CH3OH are found to be lower than those in the low-mass star-forming core, IRAS 16293-2422. Since these molecules are thought to evaporate from grain mantles, the observational results mean that complex molecules are less abundant in grain mantles residing in the ambient cloud surrounding a prestellar/protostellar core. Instead, efficient formation of the complex organic species and deuterated species should take place in a prestellar/protostellar core. The present result verifies the importance of an unbiased line survey of this source.

”Bricks vs. Clicks”: The impact of manufacturer encroachment with a dealer leasing and selling of durable goods

In durable goods markets, many brand name manufacturers, including IBM, HP, Epson, and Lenovo, have adopted dual-channel supply chains to market their products. There is scant literature, however, addressing the product durability and its impact on players’ optimal strategies in a dual-channel supply chain. To fill this void, we consider a two-period dual-channel model in which a manufacturer sells a durable product directly through both a manufacturer-owned e-channel and an independent dealer who adopts a mix of selling and leasing to consumers. Our results show that the manufacturer begins encroaching into the market in Period 1, but the dealer starts withdrawing from the retail channel in Period 2. Moreover, as the direct selling cost decreases, the equilibrium quantities and wholesale prices become quite angular and often nonmonotonic. Among other results, we find that both the dealer and the supply chain may benefit from the manufacturer’s encroachment. Our results also indicate that both the market structure and the nature of competition have an important impact on the player’s (dealer’s) optimal choice of leasing and selling.
