Production rates and production/biomass ratios have been estimated for a large number of macrobenthic species (Hargrave, 1977; Robertson, 1979). The usefulness of such estimates is limited by a lack of information on their temporal and spatial stability; we are aware of only one study (Sarvala, 1980) in which production has been estimated for more than one year. The present study investigates the stability of the production (P), biomass (B) and P/B values of two polychaete species, Nephtys hombergi Savigny and Ampharete acutifrons (Grube), over a 5-year period.

Laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate the interaction between bare and polymer-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) with various environmentally relevant carrying solutions including natural oceanic seawater with and without addition of algal exopolymeric substances (EPS). The MNPs were coated with three different stabilising agents, namely gum Arabic (GA-MNP), dextran (D-MNP) and carboxymethyl-dextran (CMD-MNP). The colloidal stability of the suspensions was evaluated over 48 h and we demonstrated that: (i) hydrodynamic diameters increased over time regardless of carrying solution for all MNPs except the GA-coated ones; however, the relative changes were carrying solution- and coat-dependent; (ii) polydispersity indexes of the freshly suspended MNPs are below 0.5 for all coated MNPs, unlike the much higher values obtained for the uncoated MNPs; (iii) freshly prepared MNP suspensions (both coated and uncoated) in Milli-Q (MQ) water show high colloidal stability as indicated by zeta-potential values below -30 mV, which however decrease in absolute value within 48 h for all MNPs regardless of carrying solution; (iv) EPS seems to "stabilise" the GA-coated and the CMD-coated MNPs, but not the uncoated or the D-coated MNPs, which form larger aggregates within 48 h; (v) despite this aggregation, iron (Fe)-leaching from MNPs is sustained over 48 h, but remained within the range of 3-9% of the total iron-content of the initially added MNPs regardless of suspension media and capping agent. The environmental implications of our findings and biotechnological applicability of MNPs are discussed.

Species size distributions for metazoan benthic invertebrates conform to the highly conservative bimodal pattern, regardless of the sieve mesh sizes or numbers of sieves used in their extraction. This pattern is not an artefact of sampling a size continuum as suggested by computer simulations using just 2 fixed mesh sizes in Bett (2013; Mar Ecol Prog Ser 487:1-6). Meiobenthos and macrobenthos are coherent entities, each with a distinct suite of functional attributes, and should not be regarded as a single unit for ecological modelling purposes.

The controlled-release characteristics of matrix silicone intravaginal rings loaded with between 100 and 971 mg of nonoxynol-9 have been investigated with a view to developing a ring that may offer a new female-controlled method for the prevention of transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, particularly HIV. Intravaginal rings containing 253, 487 and 971 mg of nonoxynol-9 provided a daily release of 2 mg or more over the 8-day release period, the minimal amount of nonoxynol-9 considered to provide an effective vaginal concentration for the prevention of HIV. Furthermore, the maximum daily release of N9 was about 6 mg, an amount significantly smaller than that observed for other nonoxynol-9 products whose large daily doses may in fact increase the occurrence of HIV by causing epithelial damage to the vaginal tissue. The release mechanism of the liquid nonoxynol-9 from the intravaginal rings has also been investigated and compared to models describing the release of solid drugs from the rings. It has been demonstrated through release studies and surface microscopy that a drug depletion zone is not established in such liquid-loaded intravaginal ring systems, with implications for the release kinetics. Objective To examine variations in self-reported smoking habit among a cohort of individuals with chronic coronary heart disease over a five year period. Design Cross-sectional cohort; interviews at baseline, 2 years and 5 years. Setting Primary care. Participants A cross-sectional sample of 688 patients previously diagnosed as having angina, identified from 18 general practices in the Greater Belfast Area; a cohort of 487 were followed for five years. Outcome measures Changes in self-reported smoking habits; breath carbon monoxide measurement. Results Initially 92 of the 487 participants (19%) reported smoking, 34 (27%) subsequently reported non-smoking. Of the 395 self-reported non-smokers at baseline, 21 (5%) subsequently reported smoking. The prevalence of self-reported smoking amongst the cohort was 19% and 15% at two and five years respectively. However, changes in reported smoking habits indicating periods of abstinence and resumption were reported by 55/487 (11%) participants. Of the 21 non-smokers who changed their report, 20 had smoked previously, five reported having stopped for less than one year but nine for more than five years. Of the initial sample twice as many smokers as non-smokers had died by 2 years (10% v 5%; p

Early pregnancy is characterized by complex interactions between blood vessels, leukocytes, and conceptus-derived trophoblasts within the gestational uterus. Uterine Natural Killer (uNK) cells become the most abundant leukocyte during decidualization and produce a wide array of angiogenic factors, yet little is known regarding their early pregnancy functions. To characterize the role(s) of uNK cells, whole mount in situ immunohistochemistry of live early implant sites was performed. A timecourse examination of murine early pregnancy (virgin, and gd4.5-9.5) implantation sites was performed. Comparison of Gd6.5, 8.5 and 9.5 implant sites from BALB/c+/+ controls (BALB/c) and BALB/c-Rag2-/-Il2rg-/- (alymphoid) identified anomalies that result from the absence of lymphocytes. In alymphoid decidua basalis, mesometrial angiogenesis was widespread but pruning of nascent vessels within alymphoid decidua basalis was deficient. As early gestation progressed, vessels of alymphoid decidua basalis showed no evidence for remodeling. Alymphoid implantation sites showed ~24h delay in uterine lumen closure and embryonic development. To determine if uNK cells would normalize the anomalies observed in alymphoid implantation sites, adoptive cell transfer of NK+ B- T- marrow to alymphoid mice was performed. All of the above anomalies were reversed by adoptive transfer of NK+B-T- marrow. My results suggest that uNK cells support vascular growth and development which ensures the decidua can support the growing conceptus early in pregnancy prior to formation and function of the placenta. Human decidual NK cells may fill similar roles and be important targets for strategies designed to correct intra-uterine growth restriction.
