Speaker: Dr Kieron O'Hara Organiser: Time: 04/02/2015 11:00-11:45 Location: B32/3077 Abstract In order to reap the potential societal benefits of big and broad data, it is essential to share and link personal data. However, privacy and data protection considerations mean that, to be shared, personal data must be anonymised, so that the data subject cannot be identified from the data. Anonymisation is therefore a vital tool for data sharing, but deanonymisation, or reidentification, is always possible given sufficient auxiliary information (and as the amount of data grows, both in terms of creation, and in terms of availability in the public domain, the probability of finding such auxiliary information grows). This creates issues for the management of anonymisation, which are exacerbated not only by uncertainties about the future, but also by misunderstandings about the process(es) of anonymisation. This talk discusses these issues in relation to privacy, risk management and security, reports on recent theoretical tools created by the UKAN network of statistics professionals (on which the author is one of the leads), and asks how long anonymisation can remain a useful tool, and what might replace it.

In this chapter, an asymmetric DSGE model is built in order to account for asymmetries in business cycles. One of the most important contributions of this work is the construction of a general utility function which nests loss aversion, risk aversion and habits formation by means of a smooth transition function. The main idea behind this asymmetric utility function is that under recession the agents over-smooth consumption and leisure choices in order to prevent a huge deviation of them from the reference level of the utility; while under boom, the agents simply smooth consumption and leisure, but trying to be as far as possible from the reference level of utility. The simulations of this model by means of Perturbations Method show that it is possible to reproduce asymmetrical business cycles where recession (on shock) are stronger than booms and booms are more long-lasting than recession. One additional and unexpected result is a downward stickiness displayed by real wages. As a consequence of this, there is a more persistent fall in employment in recession than in boom. Thus, the model reproduces not only asymmetrical business cycles but also real stickiness and hysteresis.

Se recogen actividades llevadas a cabo con alumnos de Educación Infantil y Primaria para la enseñanza del inglés dentro de las actividades formativas complementarias. El contenido se estructura en tres apartados: 'Cuentos', en el que se incluyen tres relatos y actividades sobre los mismos; 'Juegos', en el que se recogen iniciativas lúdicas para la enseñanza del idioma e 'Inglés en la red', que promueve el uso de Internet como una herramienta para la enseñanza de la lengua inglesa.

Este recurso ha sido escrito para ayudar a los alumnos a superar las pruebas para el nivel 3 del curso Edexcel BTEC National en la especificación de 2010 de deporte y ciencias del ejercicio. Incluye veintitrés unidades, además de actividades de evaluación en cada unidad que cubren todos los criterios de ésta para ofrecer a los estudiantes la oportunidad de practicar sus tareas y profundizar en el conocimiento y la comprensión de la materia y obtener los grados de aprobado, notable y sobresaliente. También, hay un capítulo dedicado a la enseñanza superior que ayuda a los candidatos a prepararse para la vida universitaria y el aprendizaje.
