In this study we used the plasma as a source of energy in the process of carbothermic reduction of rutile ore (TiO2). The rutile and graphite powders were milled for 15 h and placed in a hollow cathode discharge produced by in order to obtain titanium carbonitride directly from the reaction, was verified the influence of processing parameters of plasma temperature and time in the synthesis of TiCN. The reaction was carried out at 600, 700 and 800˚C for 3 to 4 hours in an atmosphere of nitrogen and argon. During all reactions was monitored by plasma technique of optical emission spectroscopy (EEO) to check the active species present in the process of carbothermal reduction of TiO2. The powder obtained after the reactions were characterized by the techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The technique of EEO were detected in all reactions the spectra CO and NO, and these gas-phase resulting from the reduction of TiO2. The results of X-ray diffraction confirmed the reduction, where for all conditions studied there was evidence of early reduction of TiO2 through the emergence of intermediate oxides. In the samples reduced at 600 and 700˚C, there was only the phase Ti6O11, those reduced to 800˚C appeared Ti5O9 phases, and Ti6O11 Ti7O13, confirming that the carbothermal reduction in plasma, a reduction of the ore rutile (TiO2) in a series of intermediate titanium oxide (TinO2n-1) where n varies between 5 and 10

Among the researches on preparation and test of nanostructured materials, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide have been the most frequent studied oxides. In order to extend their properties, composites have been prepared using three different methods: Polyol Method, Sol-gel Process and a combination of the two processes (hybrid process). Recent research showed best properties in composite materials than in pure oxides. In this work is presented the preparation and the structural characterization of ZnO-TiO2 composite nanostructures to be tested for their performance in electrocatalysis and in further trial on photovoltaic cells.

Single-phase perovskite 0.9Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.1PbTiO(3) (PMN-PT) powders were prepared by using a Ti-modified columbite precursor (MNT) obtained by the polymeric precursor method. The innovation consists in the preparation of Ti-modified columbite in order to react directly with a stoichiometric amount of PbO to obtain pyrochlore-free PMN-PT powders. It has been shown that titanium oxide forms a solid solution with columbite (MN) and does not affect the obtaining of a single-phase columbite precursor. Thus, a high amount of perovskite phase can be obtained by reaction with PbO at 800 degreesC for 2 h. Effects of K and Li additives on the structure of MNT and PMN-PT were studied. X-ray diffraction studies were carried out to verify the phase formation at each processing step and these data were used for structural refinement by the Rietveld method. Both K and Li additives increase the crystallinity of MNT powders, being this effect more intense for the Li-doped samples. For PMN-PT samples the additives cause an insignificant decrease in the amount of perovskite phase. The morphology of the PMN-PT powder depends on the type of the additive. The present paper focuses on the structural, electronic, and compositional properties of Ge25Ga10S65 glasses before and after UV illumination in air using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques. The XPS Ge 3d spectra reveal the existence of Ge-O bonds in the surface region of illuminated glass. In the case of this sample, XAS O K-edge spectra showed the formation of an enriched region of oxygen atoms in the glass bulk, indicating a different bonding structure of oxygen at the surface and in the bulk of the glass. Moreover, the structural changes that occur after UV illumination in the glass sample are identified as the formation of a homogeneous germanium oxide surface layer followed by an intermediary Ge25Ga10S65-yOz subsurface region. Barium titanate ceramics were prepared through mechanochemical synthesis starting from fresh prepared barium oxide and titanium oxide in rutile form. Mixture of oxides was milled in zirconia oxide jar in the planetary ball-mill during 30, 60, 120 and 240 min. Extended time of milling directed to formation of higher amount of barium titanate perovskite phase. Barium titanate with good crystallinity was formed after 240 min. Sintering without pre-calcinations step was performed at 1330 degrees C for 2 hours with heating rate of 10 degrees C/min. The XRD, DSC, IR and TEM analyses were performed. Electric and ferroelectric properties were studied. Very well defined hysteresis loop was obtained.

Bi4Ti3O12 powder was synthesized from bismuth oxide and titanium oxide. Mixture of oxides was milled in zirconium oxide jar in the planetary ball-mill during 1, 3 and 6 h. Extended time of milling directed to formation of higher amount of titanates perovskite phase. Bi4Ti3O12 was formed between 1 and 3 h of milling time. The phase formation of Bi4Ti3O12, crystal structure and powder particle size were followed by XRD, Raman spectroscopy and SEM analysis. After milling for various times the powders were compacted by pressing and isothermal sintering. Sample milled for 3 h and subsequently sintered at 1000C for 24 h exhibit a hysteresis loop, confirming that the synthesized material possesses ferroelectric properties. All results affect that the structure Bi4Ti3O12 is strongly dependent on the milling time.

In this work, the chemical structure, the microstructure and the surface morphology of two non-ferrous materials used in dental implants (Ti-6Al-4V and Co-Cr-Mo) were studied. This was done by chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy disperse spectroscopy (EDS), and strength measurements (HV). Metallographic studies reveal that titanium alloy surface present a fine granular binary phase structure, while cobalt alloy present cast dendrite structures with an intense precipitation of carbides. To correlate the macro and microstructure with the mechanical behavior of the material, microhardness measurements were performed. Using the Vickers hardening method, the Ti-6Al-4V alloy yielded strength mean values smaller than the Co-Cr-Mo alloy. Their values are associated to the chemical composition and to the microstructural distribution of these materials. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy presents hardness similar to dental enamel, which suggests better performance as dental implant.

Spindle-type iron fine particles have been prepared by reduction of silica-coated-hematite particles. Hydrogen reduction of the coated-hematite cores yielded uniform spindle-type iron particles, which were stabilized by surface oxidation. Narrow particle distributions are observed from TEM measurements. X-ray, Mössbauer and magnetization data are in agreement with the presence of nanosized α-Fe particles, having surface layer of spinel structure oxide. Mössbauer spectra show that the oxide surface is superparamagnetic at room temperature. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Our efforts were directed to the preparation of bismuth titanate - Bi 4e;Ti3O12 (BIT) by mechanically assisted synthesis. The mechanical activation was applied to prepare bismuth titanate, Bi4e;Ti3O12, from bismuth oxide, Bi 2O3, and titanium oxide, TiO2 (in an anatase crystal form). Mechanochemical synthesis was performed in a planetary ball mill in air atmosphere. Bismuth titanate ceramics was obtained by sintering at 1000° C The formation of Bi4e;Ti3O12 in the sintered samples was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Scanning electron microscopy, SEM, was used to study the particle size and powder morphology. The obtained results indicate that Bi4e;Ti3O12 from the powder synthesized by high-energy ball milling exhibits good sinterability, showing advantage of the mechanochemical process over conventional solid-state reaction.

Application of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) to implant surfaces has been of great interest due to its osteoinductive potential. However, the optimal coating methodology has not been clarified. The objective of the study was to determine whether the application of rhBMP-2 onto plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite implant surfaces by immersion in protein solution before implant installation would result in significantly improved bone apposition. Using a sheep iliac model, titanium (Ti) and plasma-sprayed calcium-phosphate (PSCaP)-coated implants uncoated and coated with rhBMP-2 were assessed for their osteogenic effects in the peri-implant area over time in terms of osseointegration and de novo bone formation. After 3 and 6 weeks postoperatively, the samples were retrieved and were subjected to bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and bone area fraction occupancy (BAFO) evaluation. When rhBMP-2 was applied to the PSCaP surface, significant increases in BIC and BAFO were observed at 3 weeks in vivo, whereas when adsorbed directly onto the titanium implant surface, rhBMP-2 did not as effectively improve the bone response (although significantly higher than control Ti). The outcomes of the present study suggested that the combination of plasma-sprayed calcium-phosphate surface and rhBMP-2 coating significantly enhanced osseointegration, which validated the postulated hypothesis. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
