A survey (N= 352) was conducted among British passengers of a cross-channel ferry. The survey aimed to test hypotheses drawn from Realistic Group Conflict, Social Identity and Contact theories using mainly a correlational design. However, an intervention by members of the outgroup (French fishermen blockading a port) also allowed a quasi-experimental test of the effects of a direct experience of intergroup conflict. Results supported the hypotheses since conflict and national identification were associated with more negative and with less positive attitudes toward the outgroup, while contact had the reverse effects. In addition, the salience of group membership in the contact relationship weakly moderated the effect of contact.

We describe the genomic organization of a recently identified CC chemokine, MIP3 alpha /CCL20 (HGMW-approved symbol SCYA20). The MIP-3 alpha /CCL20 gene was cloned and sequenced, revealing a four exon, three intron structure, and was localized by FISK analysis to 2q35-q36. Two distinct cDNAs were identified, encoding two forms of MIP-3 alpha /CCL20, Ala MLP-3 alpha /CCL20 and Ser MIP-3 alpha /CCL20, that differ by one amino acid at the predicted signal peptide cleavage site. Examination of the sequence around the boundary of intron 1 and exon 2 showed that use of alternative splice acceptor sites could give rise to Ata MIP-3 alpha /CCL20 or Ser MIP-3 alpha /CCL20. Both forms of MIP-3cr/CCL20 were chemically synthesized and tested for biological activity. Both flu antigen plus IL-a-activated CD4(+) and CD8(+) T lymphoblasts and cord blood-derived dendritic cells responded to Ser and Ala MIP-3 alpha /CCL20. T lymphocytes exposed only to IL-2 responded inconsistently, while no response was detected in naive T lymphocytes, monocytes, or neutrophils. The biological activity of Ser MIP-3 alpha /CCL20 and Ala MIP-3 alpha /CCL20 and the tissue-specific preference of different splice acceptor sites are not yet known. (C) 2001 Academic Press.

Objective-To compare the accuracy and feasibility of harmonic power Doppler and digitally subtracted colour coded grey scale imaging for the assessment of perfusion defect severity by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in an unselected group of patients. Design-Cohort study. Setting-Regional cardiothoracic unit. Patients-49 patients (mean (SD) age 61 (11) years; 27 women, 22 men) with known or suspected coronary artery disease were studied with simultaneous myocardial contrast echo (MCE) and SPECT after standard dipyridamole stress. Main outcome measures-Regional myocardial perfusion by SPECT, performed with Tc-99m tetrafosmin, scored qualitatively and also quantitated as per cent maximum activity. Results-Normal perfusion was identified by SPECT in 225 of 270 segments (83%). Contrast echo images were interpretable in 92% of patients. The proportion of normal MCE by grey scale, subtracted, and power Doppler techniques were respectively 76%, 74%, and 88% (p < 0.05) at > 80% of maximum counts, compared with 65%, 69%, and 61% at < 60% of maximum counts. For each technique, specificity was lowest in the lateral wail, although power Doppler was the least affected. Grey scale and subtraction techniques were least accurate in the septal wall, but power Doppler showed particular problems in the apex. On a per patient analysis, the sensitivity was 67%, 75%, and 83% for detection of coronary artery disease using grey scale, colour coded, and power Doppler, respectively, with a significant difference between power Doppler and grey scale only (p < 0.05). Specificity was also the highest for power Doppler, at 55%, but not significantly different from subtracted colour coded images. Conclusions-Myocardial contrast echo using harmonic power Doppler has greater accuracy than with grey scale imaging and digital subtraction. However, power Doppler appears to be less sensitive for mild perfusion defects.

Objective To review complications in both diagnostic and operative laparoscopic procedures at a university-affiliated major teaching hospital and to assess possible risk factors for complications. Design and setting A retrospective review of all laparoscopic procedures at the Royal Women's Hospital Brisbane, Australia, from 1990 to 1997 inclusive. A non-medical or nursing independent assessor reviewed charts. Data were collected on a standard form. Incomplete charts were excluded from analysis. Results There was a total of 1505 procedures. Analysis was based on 1435 complete data records. The overall complication rate was 2.86% with infection (1.3%) being the most common. The rate of gastrointestinal injury was 0.14%. Compared with women who had diagnostic laparoscopies, a higher rate of complication was found in women who had undergone operative laparoscopic procedures. However, this difference did not reach statistical significance. The complication rate was unrelated to seniority of the surgeon. Conclusion Complications can occur in any laparoscopic procedure. Regular reviews, especially in teaching hospitals, will provide feedback to clinicians to improve quality of care.

Objectives Low doses of ACTH [1-24] (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mug per 1.73 m(2)) may provide a more physiological level of adrenal stimulation than the standard 250 mug test, but not all studies have concluded that the 1.0 fig is a more sensitive screening test for central hypoadrenalism. Eight-hour infusions of high dose ACTH [1-24] have also been suggested as a means of assessing the adrenals' capacity for sustained cortisol secretion. In this study, we compared the diagnostic accuracy of three low dose ACTH tests (LDTs) and the 8-h infusion with the standard 250 jig test (HDT) and the insulin hypoglycaemia test (IHT) in patients with hypothalamic-pituitary disease. Subjects and design Three groups of subjects were studied. A healthy control group (group 1, n=9) and 33 patients with known hypothalamic or pituitary disease who were divided into group 2 (n=12, underwent IHT) and group 3 (n=21, IHT contraindicated). Six different tests were performed: a standard IHT (0.15 U/kg soluble insulin); a 60-minute 250 mug HDT; three different LDTs using 0.1 mug, 0.5 mug and 1.0 mug (all per 1.73 m(2)); and an 8-h infusion test (250 mug ACTH [1-24] at a constant rate over 8 h). Results Nine out of the 12 patients in group 2 failed the IHT. Three out of 12 patients from group 2 who clearly passed the IHT, also passed all the ACTH [1-24] stimulation tests. Despite evidence linking shrimp farming to several cases of environmental degradation, there remains a lack of ecologically meaningful information about the impacts of effluent on receiving waters. The aim of this study was to determine the biological impact of shrimp farm effluent, and to compare and distinguish its impacts from treated sewage effluent. Analyses included standard water quality/sediment parameters, as well as biological indicators including tissue nitrogen (N) content, stable isotope ratio of nitrogen (delta N-15) and amino acid composition of inhabitant seagrasses, mangroves and macroalgae. The study area consisted of two tidal creeks, one receiving effluent from a sewage treatment plant and the other from an intensive shrimp farm. The creeks discharged into the western side of Moreton Bay, a sub-tropical coastal embayment on the east coast of Australia. Characterization of water quality revealed significant differences between the creeks, and with unimpacted eastern Moreton Bay. The sewage creek had higher concentrations of dissolved nutrients (predominantly NO3-/NO2- and PO43-, compared to NH4+ in the shrimp creek). In contrast, the shrimp creek was more turbid and had higher phytoplankton productivity. Beyond 750 m from the creek mouths, water quality parameters were indistinguishable from eastern Moreton Bay values. Biological indicators detected significant impacts up to 4 km beyond the creek mouths (reference site). Elevated plant delta N-15 values ranged from 10.4-19.6 parts per thousand at the site of sewage discharge to 2.9-4.5 parts per thousand at the reference site. The free amino acid concentration and composition of seagrass and macroalgae was used to distinguish between the uptake of sewage and shrimp derived N. Proline (seagrass) and serine (macroalgae) were high in sewage impacted plants and glutamine (seagrass) and alanine (macroalgae) were high in plants impacted by shrimp effluent. The delta N-15 isotopic signatures and free amino acid composition of inhabitant flora indicated that sewage N extended further from the creek mouths than shrimp N. The combination of physical/chemical and biological indicators used in this study was effective in distinguishing the composition and subsequent impacts of aquaculture and sewage effluent on the receiving waters. Current serotyping methods classify Pasteurella multocida into five capsular serogroups (serogroups A, B, D, E, and F) and 16 somatic serotypes (serotypes 1 to 16). In the present study, we have developed a multiplex PCR assay as a rapid alternative to the conventional capsular serotyping system. The serogroup-specific primers used in this assay were designed following identification, sequence determination, and analysis of the capsular biosynthetic loci of each capsular serogroup. The entire capsular biosynthetic loci of P. multocida A:1 (X-73) and B:2 (M1404) have been cloned and sequenced previously (J. Y. Chung, Y. M. Zhang, and B. Adler, FEMS Microbiol. Lett. 166:289-296, 1998; J. D. Boyce, J. Y. Chung, and B. Adler, Vet. Microbiol. 72:121-134, 2000). Nucleotide sequence analysis of the biosynthetic region (region 2) from each of the remaining three serogroups, serogroups D, E, and F, identified serogroup-specific regions and gave an indication of the capsular polysaccharide composition. The multiplex capsular PCR assay was highly specific, and its results, with the exception of those for some serogroup F strains, correlated well with conventional serotyping results. Sequence analysis of the strains that gave conflicting results confirmed the validity of the multiplex PCR and indicated that these strains were in fact capsular serogroup A. The multiplex PCR will clarify the distinction between closely related serogroups A and F and constitutes a rapid assay for the definitive classification of P. multocida capsular types

By exhibiting a violation of a novel form of the Bell-CHSH inequality, Żukowski has recently established that the quantum correlations exploited in the standard perfect teleportation protocol cannot be recovered by any local hidden variables model. In the case of imperfect teleportation, we show that a violation of a generalized form of Żukowski's teleportation inequality can only occur if the channel state, considered by itself, already violates a Bell-CHSH inequality. On the other hand, the fact that the channel state violates a Bell-CHSH inequality is not sufficient to imply a violation of Żukowski's teleportation inequality (or any of its generalizations). The implication does hold, however, if the fidelity of the teleportation exceeds ≈ 0.90. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The complete nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial (mt) DNA molecule of the liverfluke, Fasciola hepatica (phylum Platyhelminthes, class Trematoda, family Fasciolidae), was determined, It comprises 14462 bp, contains 12 protein-encoding, 2 ribosomal and 22 transfer RNA genes, and is the second complete flatworm (and the first trematode) mitochondrial sequence to be described in detail. All of the genes are transcribed from the same strand. Of the genes typically found in mitochondrial genomes of eumetazoans, only atp8 is absent. The nad4L and nad4 genes overlap by 40 nt. Most intergenic sequences are very short. Two larger non-coding regions are present. The longer one (817 nt) is located between trnG and cox3 and consists of 8 identical tandem repeats of 85 nt, rich in G and C, followed by 1 imperfect repeat. The shorter non-coding region (187 nt) exhibits no special features and is separated from the longer region by trnG. The gene arrangement resembles that of some other trematodes including the eastern Asian Schistosoma species (and cyclophyllidean cestode species) but it is strikingly different from that of the African schistosomes, represented by Schistosoma mansoni. The genetic code is as inferred previously for flatworms. Transfer RNA genes range in length from 58 to 70 nt, their products producing characteristic 'clover leaf' structures, except for tRNA(S-VON) and tRNA(S-AGN) lacking the DHU arm.

OBJECTIVES Graves' disease (GD) complicates 0.1% to 0.2% of pregnancies, but congenital thyrotoxicosis is rare occurring in one in 70 of these pregnancies independent of maternal disease status. Antenatal prediction of affected infants is imprecise; however, maternal history, coupled with a high maternal serum TSH receptor binding immunoglobulin index (TBII) predict adverse neonatal outcome. Mortality is reported to be as high as 25% in affected infants and would therefore be expected to be higher in premature infants. This study illustrates that in sick, premature, extreme low birth weight (ELBW) or intrauterine growth retarded (IUGR) infants, the diagnosis maybe overlooked especially in the absence of antenatal risk assessment and management of thyrotoxicosis in this setting is complex. DESIGN and PATIENTS The records of premature neonates born at the three main maternity units in Brisbane, between January 1996 and July 1998 diagnosed with congenital thyrotoxicosis were reviewed. Data were recorded on gestational age, birth weight (B Wt), maternal thyroid history and current status, and neonatal course. Thyroid function and TBII status was assessed using standard biochemical assays. RESULTS Seven neonates from five pregnancies were identified (four female, three male). Mean gestational age was 30 week (25-36 week) and median B Wt was 1.96 kg (0.50-2.62 kg). Only one mother received formal antenatal counselling by a paediatric endocrine service and had a TBII (54%) measured prior to delivery. Three of five mothers had elevated TBII measured after diagnosis in their offspring (57%, 65%, 83%) and in one mother, a TBII was not performed. All mothers were biochemically euthyroid at delivery. Mean age at diagnosis was 9 days (1-16 days) and mean age at commencement of treatment was 12 days (7-26 days). Two infants received propylthiouracil and five received a combination of carbimazole and propranolol. Pour became biochemically hypothyroid, in three this resolved with cessation of the antithyroid drug (ATD), and one required ongoing T4 supplementation. Only one infant required treatment for cardiac failure and there were no deaths in this cohort. CONCLUSIONS This is a large series of extremely small and premature infants with neonatal thyrotoxicosis. Presentation was nonspecific. The diagnosis was delayed because of low birth weight, prematurity, multiple birth and/or an unrecognized maternal history of Graves' disease. The treatment of neonatal thyrotoxicosis was difficult in these extreme law birth weight infants yet no infant died and significant morbidity was confined to high output cardiac failure in one infant. With antenatal recognition of past or active Graves' disease, assessment of maternal TSH receptor binding immunoglobulin index prior to delivery and postnatal monitoring of cord TSH and venous fT4 and TSH on days 4 and 7 rapid treatment of affected infants may have further reduced neonatal morbidity.

Time-depth recorders were used to investigate the diving performance and behaviour of two bimodally respiring turtle species, Rheodytes leukops and Emydura niacquarii, known to have a high and low reliance on aquatic respiration, respectively. Significant differences in diving performance between R. leukops and E. macquarii were observed in the number of dives/day (39.3 +/- 5.38 vs 112.2 +/- 11.73 dives/day; mean +/- SE), mean dive length (33.1 +/- 7.33 min vs 9.6 +/- 2.26 min) and maximum dive length (623 +/- 104.74 min vs 67.1 +/- 8.14 min), respectively. Differences in diving performance between R. leukops and E macquarii are attributed to the species' reliance (or lack thereof) upon aquatic respiration. Rheodytes leukops displayed a weak bimodal pattern of increased surfacing frequency in the early morning (05:00-07:00) and late afternoon (14:00-18:00), while E. macquarii displayed a strong bimodal pattern of elevated surfacing frequency over similar time periods. Daily patterns of increased surfacing frequency for both species failed to correlate with fluctuating aquatic Po-2 levels or water temperature, and may instead be explained by the heightened activity levels of both species during twilight.

The outcome effect occurs where an evaluator, who has knowledge of the outcome of a judge's decision , assesses the quality of the judgment of that decision maker. If the evaluator has knowledge of a negative outcome, then that knowledge negatively influences his or her assessment of the ex ante judgment. For instance, jurors in a lawsuit brought against an auditor for alleged negligence are informed of an undetected fraud, even though an unqualified opinion was issued. This paper reports the results of an experiment in an applied audit judgment setting that examined methods of mitigating the outcome effect by means of instructions. The results showed that simply instructing or warning the evaluator about the potential biasing effects of outcome information was only weakly effective. However, instructions that stressed either (1) the cognitive non-normativeness of the outcome effect or (2) the seriousness and gravity of the evaluation ameliorated the effect significantly. From a theoretical perspective, the results suggest that there may both motivational and cognitive components to the outcome effect. In all, the findings suggest awareness of the outcome effect and use of relatively nonintrusive instructions to evaluators may effectively counteract the potential for the outcome bias.
