Here, we demonstrate a Si-mediated environmentally friendly reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and the fabrication of its hybrids with multiwall carbon nanotubes and nanofibers. The reduction of GO is facilitated by nascent hydrogen generated by the reaction between Si and KOH at similar to 60 degrees C. The overall process takes 5 to 7 minutes and 10 to 15 mu m of Si is consumed each time. We show that Si can be used multiple times and the rGO based hybrids can be used for electrode materials.

This paper develops a fully coupled time domain Reduced Order Modelling (ROM) approach to model unsteady combustion dynamics in a backward facing step combustor The acoustic field equations are projected onto the canonical acoustic eigenmodes of the systems to obtain a coupled system of modal evolution equations. The heat release response of the flame is modelled using the G-equation approach. Vortical velocity fluctuations that arise due to shear layer rollup downstream of the step are modelled using a simplified 1D-advection equation whose phase speed is determined from a linear, local, temporal stability analysis of the shear layer just downstream of the step. The hydrodynamic stability analysis reveals a abrupt change in the value of disturbance phase speed from unity for Re < Re-crit to 0.5 for Re > Re-crit, where Remit for the present geometry was found to be approximate to 10425. The results for self-excited flame response show highly wrinkled flame shapes that are qualitatively similar to those seen in prior experiments of acoustically forced flames. The effect of constructive and destructive interference between the two contributions to flame surface wrinkling results in high amplitude wrinkles for the case when K-c -> 1.

Using the positivity of relative entropy arising from the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for spherical entangling surfaces, we obtain constraints at the nonlinear level for the gravitational dual. We calculate the Green's function necessary to compute the first order correction to the entangling surface and use this to find the relative entropy for non-constant stress tensors in a derivative expansion. We show that the Einstein value satisfies the positivity condition, while the multidimensional parameter space away from it gets constrained.

Dynamic power dissipation due to redundant switching is an important metric in data-path design. This paper focuses on the use of ingenious operand isolation circuits for low power design. Operand isolation attempts to reduce switching by clamping or latching the output of a first level of combinational circuit. This paper presents a novel method using power supply switching wherein both PMOS and NMOS stacks of a circuit are connected to the same power supply. Thus, the output gets clamped or latched to the power supply value with minimal leakage. The proposed circuits make use of only two transistors to clamp the entire Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) block. Also, the latch-based designs have higher drive strength in comparison to the existing methods. Simulation results have shown considerable area reduction in comparison to the existing techniques without increasing timing overhead.

In this paper, for the first time, we have reported the novel synthesis of reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) dendrite kind of nanomaterial. The proposed r-GO dendrite possesses multifunctional properties in various fields of sensing and separation. The dendrite was synthesized by chemical reaction in different steps. Initially, the r-GO sheet was conjugated with silane group modified magnetic nanoparticle, resulting in nanoparticle decorated r-GO. The above r-GO sheet was further reacted with a new r-GO sheet, resulting in the formation of r-GO dendrite type of structure. Multifunctional behavior of this r-GO dendrite structure was studied by different methods. First, magnetic properties were studied by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and it was found that dendrite structure shows good magnetic susceptibility (180.2 emu/g). The proposed r-GO dendrite also shows a very good antibacterial behavior for Escherichia coli and excellent electrochemical behavior towards ferrocyanide probe molecule. Along with these, it also acts as a substrate for the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymer for europium metal ion, a lanthanide. The proposed imprinted sensor shows a very high selectivity and sensitivity for europium metal ion (limit of detection= 0.019 mu g L-1) in aqueous as well as real samples. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. In the present paper, based on the principles of gauge/gravity duality we analytically compute the shear viscosity to entropy (eta/s) ratio corresponding to the super fluid phase in Einstein Gauss-Bonnet gravity. From our analysis we note that the ratio indeed receives a finite temperature correction below certain critical temperature (T < T-c). This proves the non universality of eta/s ratio in higher derivative theories of gravity. We also compute the upper bound for the Gauss-Bonnet coupling (lambda) corresponding to the symmetry broken phase and note that the upper bound on the coupling does not seem to change as long as we are close to the critical point of the phase diagram. However the corresponding lower bound of the eta/s ratio seems to get modified due to the finite temperature effects.

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) noise is one of the major issues during the design of the grid-tied power converters. Presence of high dv/dt in Common Mode (CM) voltage, excites the parasitic capacitances and causes injection of narrow peaky current to ground. This results in high EMI noise level. A topology consisting of a single phase PWM-rectifier with LCL filter, utilising bipolar PWM method is proposed which reduces the EMI noise level by more than 30dB. This filter topology is shown to be insensitive to the switching delays between the legs of the inverter. The proposed topology eliminates high dv/dt from the dc-bus CM voltage by making it sinusoidal. Hence, the high frequency CM current injection to ground is minimized.

The climatic effects of Solar Radiation Management (SRM) geoengineering have been often modeled by simply reducing the solar constant. This is most likely valid only for space sunshades and not for atmosphere and surface based SRM methods. In this study, a global climate model is used to evaluate the differences in the climate response to SRM by uniform solar constant reduction and stratospheric aerosols. Our analysis shows that when global mean warming from a doubling of CO2 is nearly cancelled by both these methods, they are similar when important surface and tropospheric climate variables are considered. However, a difference of 1 K in the global mean stratospheric (61-9.8 hPa) temperature is simulated between the two SRM methods. Further, while the global mean surface diffuse radiation increases by similar to 23 % and direct radiation decreases by about 9 % in the case of sulphate aerosol SRM method, both direct and diffuse radiation decrease by similar fractional amounts (similar to 1.0 %) when solar constant is reduced. When CO2 fertilization effects from elevated CO2 concentration levels are removed, the contribution from shaded leaves to gross primary productivity (GPP) increases by 1.8 % in aerosol SRM because of increased diffuse light. However, this increase is almost offset by a 15.2 % decline in sunlit contribution due to reduced direct light. Overall both the SRM simulations show similar decrease in GPP (similar to 8 %) and net primary productivity (similar to 3 %). Based on our results we conclude that the climate states produced by a reduction in solar constant and addition of aerosols into the stratosphere can be considered almost similar except for two important aspects: stratospheric temperature change and the consequent implications for the dynamics and the chemistry of the stratosphere and the partitioning of direct versus diffuse radiation reaching the surface. Further, the likely dependence of global hydrological cycle response on aerosol particle size and the latitudinal and height distribution of aerosols is discussed.

We study motion around a static Einstein and pure Lovelock black hole in higher dimensions. It is known that in higher dimensions bound orbits exist only for a pure Lovelock black hole in all even dimensions, D = 2N + 2, where N is the degree of Lovelock polynomial action. In particular, we compute periastron shift and light bending, and the latter is given by one of the transverse spatial components of the Riemann curvature tensor. We also consider the pseudo-Newtonian potentials and Kruskal coordinates.

Logging and hunting are two key direct threats to the survival of wildlife in the tropics, and also disrupt important ecosystem processes. We investigated the impacts of these two factors on the different stages of the seed dispersal cycle, including abundance of plants and their dispersers and dispersal of seeds and recruitment, in a tropical forest in north-east India. We focused on hornbills, which are important seed dispersers in these forests, and their food tree species. We compared abundances of hornbill food tree species in a site with high logging and hunting pressures (heavily disturbed) with a site that had no logging and relatively low levels of hunting (less disturbed) to understand logging impacts on hornbill food tree abundance. We compared hornbill abundances across these two sites. We, then, compared the scatter-dispersed seed arrival of five large-seeded tree species and the recruitment of four of those species. Abundances of hornbill food trees that are preferentially targeted by logging were two times higher in the less disturbed site as compared to the heavily disturbed site while that of hornbills was 22 times higher. The arrival of scatter-dispersed seeds was seven times higher in the less disturbed site. Abundances of recruits of two tree species were significantly higher in the less disturbed site. For another species, abundances of younger recruits were significantly lower while that of older recruits were higher in the heavily disturbed site. Our findings suggest that logging reduces food plant abundance for an important frugivore-seed disperser group, while hunting diminishes disperser abundances, with an associated reduction in seed arrival and altered recruitment of animal-dispersed tree species in the disturbed site. Based on our results, we present a conceptual model depicting the relationships and pathways between vertebrate-dispersed trees, their dispersers, and the impacts of hunting and logging on these pathways.

In this work, porous membranes were designed by selectively etching the PEO phase, by water, from a melt-mixed PE/PEO blend. The pure water flux and the resistance across the membrane were systematically evaluated by employing an indigenously developed cross flow membrane setup. Both the phase morphology and the cross sectional morphology of the membranes was assessed by scanning electron microscopy and an attempt was made to correlate the observed morphology with the membrane performance. In order to design antibacterial membranes for water purification, partially reduced graphene oxide (rGO), silver nanoparticles (Ag) and silver nanoparticles decorated with rGO (rGO-Ag) were synthesized and incorporated directly into the blends during melt mixing. The loss of viability of bacterial cells was determined by the colony counting method using E. coli as a model bacterium. SEM images display that the direct contact with the rGO-Ag nanoparticles disrupts the cell membrane. In addition, the rGO-Ag nanoparticles exhibited a synergistic effect with respect to bacterial cell viability in comparison to both rGO and Ag nanoparticles. The possible mechanism associated with the antibacterial activity in the membranes was discussed. This study opens new avenues in designing antibacterial membranes for water purification.

Compressed Sensing (CS) is an elegant technique to acquire signals and reconstruct them efficiently by solving a system of under-determined linear equations. The excitement in this field stems from the fact that we can sample at a rate way below the Nyquist rate and still reconstruct the signal provided some conditions are met. Some of the popular greedy reconstruction algorithms are the Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP), the Subspace Pursuit (SP) and the Look Ahead Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (LAOMP). The LAOMP performs better than the OMP. However, when compared to the SP and the OMP, the computational complexity of LAOMP is higher. We introduce a modified version of the LAOMP termed as Reduced Look Ahead Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (Reduced LAOMP). Reduced LAOMP uses prior information from the results of the OMP and the SP in the quest to speedup the look ahead strategy in the LAOMP. Monte Carlo simulations of this algorithm deliver promising results.

We explore the effect of modification to Einstein's gravity in white dwarfs for the first time in the literature, to the best of our knowledge. This leads to significantly sub- and super-Chandrasekhar limiting masses of white dwarfs, determined by a single model parameter. On the other hand, type Ia supernovae (SNeIa), a key to unravel the evolutionary history of the universe, are believed to be triggered in white dwarfs having mass close to the Chandrasekhar limit. However, observations of several peculiar, under- and over-luminous SNeIa argue for exploding masses widely different from this limit. We argue that explosions of the modified gravity induced sub- and super-Chandrasekhar limiting mass white dwarfs result in under- and over-luminous SNeIa respectively, thus unifying these two apparently disjoint sub-classes and, hence, serving as a missing link. Our discovery raises two fundamental questions. Is the Chandrasekhar limit unique? Is Einstein's gravity the ultimate theory for understanding astronomical phenomena? Both the answers appear to be no!

Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is prepared by thermal exfoliation of graphite oxide in air. Symmetric RGO/RGO supercapacitors are constructed in a non-aqueous electrolyte and characterized. The values of energy density are 44 Wh kg(-1) and 15 Wh kg(-1), respectively at 0.15 and 8.0 kW kg(-1). The symmetric supercapacitor exhibits stable charge/discharge cycling tested up to 3000 cycles. The low-temperature thermal exfoliation approach is convenient for mass production of RGO at low cost and it can be used as electrode material for energy storage applications. (c) The Author(s) 2015. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise is one of the major issues during design of grid-tied power converters. A novel LCL filter topology for a single-phase pulsewidth modulation (PWM) rectifier that makes use of bipolar PWM method is proposed for a single-phase to three-phase motor drive power converter. The proposed topology eliminates high dv/dt from the dc-bus common-mode (CM) voltage by making it sinusoidal. Hence, the high-frequency CM current injection to the ground and the motor-side CM current are minimized. The proposed filter configuration makes the system insensitive to circuit non-idealities such as mismatch in inductors values, unequal turn-on and turn-off delays, and dead-time mismatch between the inverter legs. Different variants of the filter topology are compared to establish the effectiveness of the proposed circuit. Experimental results based on the EMI measurement on the grid side and the CM current measurement on the motor side are presented for a 5-kW motor drive. It is shown that the proposed filter topology reduces the EMI noise level by about 35 dB.
