Nuclear Overhauser effects (NOE) and circular dichroism (CD) techniques have been used to probe @-turn conformations in acyclic and cyclic peptides containingPro-Xsequences. The model peptides studied are of the type Piv-Pro-X-NHMe (X = Aib, D-Ala, Gly, Val, and Leu) and Boc-Cys-Pro-X-C s NHMe (X = Aib, L-Ala, D-Ala, Gly, and Leu). In the acyclic series, observation of NOES between Pro C"H and X-NH, together with solvent and temperature dependence of NH chemical shifts, establishes a 4 - 1 hydrogen bond stabilized type I1 @-turn in the Gly, D-Ala, and Aib peptides, in CDC13 and (CD3)2S0. A positive n-r* CD band at -225-230 nm appears to be characteristic of this structure. For the acyclic Pro-Leu peptide the observation of NOE's for both Pro and Leu C"H resonances on saturation of Leu NH is compatible with a type V bend or consecutive y-turn conformation. In the cyclic disulfide series the Pro-Aib and Pro-D-Ala peptides favor type I1 @-turns, whereas all other peptides adopt type I (111) conformations. All the cyclic disulfides exhibit an intense negative CD band at -228-230 nm. The results suggest thatgeneralcorrelations between CD spectral type and specific 0-turn conformations may not be obtained. Evidence for solvent-dependent structural changes in the Pro-Aib sequence in both cyclic and acyclic peptides is presented.

Nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) studies of the symmetrical cystine peptides (Formula: see text) (n = 1-3) in dimethylsulfoxide, have resulted in the simultaneous observation of both positive and negative NOEs. Positive NOEs are observed on the Trp C2H and C4H protons of the indole ring upon irradiation of Trp C alpha H and C beta H2 resonances in the peptides where n = 1 and 2. Negative NOEs are observed between backbone NH and C alpha H protons. The magnitudes of the observed NOEs are sensitive to changes in molecular size and solvent viscosity. The results demonstrate that NOEs may be a useful probe of sidechain segmental motion in oligopeptides.

Peptide disulfides are unstable under alkaline conditions, resulting in the formation of products containing lanthionine and polysulfied linkages. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry has been used to characterize major species obtained when cyclic and acyclic peptide disulfides are exposed to alkaline media. Studies on a model cyclic peptide disulfide (Boc - Cys - Pro - Leu - Cys - NHMe) and an acyclic peptide, oxidized glutathione, bis ((gamma)Glu Cys - Gly - COOH), are described. Disulfide cleavage reactions are initiated by the abstraction of (CH)-H-alpha or (CH)-H-beta protons of Cys residues, with Subsequent elimination of H2S or H2S2. The buildup of reactive thiol species which act on intermediates containing dehydroalanine residues, rationalizes the formation of lanthionine and polysulfide products. In the case of the cyclic peptide disulfide, the formation of cyclic products is facilitated by the intramolecular nature of the Michael addition reaction of thiols to the dehydroalanine residue. Mass spectral evidence for the intermediate species is presented by using alkylation of thiol groups as a trapping method. Mass spectral fragmentation in the negative ion mode of the peptides derived from trisulfides and tetrasulfides results in elimination of S-2. Diphenyl sulphoxide (DPSO) complexes of some divalent metal perchlorates and chlorides are prepared The perchlorates of Mn, Co, Ni, Zn and Cd have the general formula [M(DPSO)6](CIO4)2. The Cu(II) complex is found to have the composition [Cu(DPSO)4] (CIO42. The chloro complex having the formula ZnCl2. 2DPSO, CdCl2.DPSO, HgCl2. DPSO and PdCl2. 2 DPSO have also been obtained. Infrared spectra indicate that the DPSO complexes of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn are oxygen-bonded while those of Cd, Hg and Pd are sulphur-bonded. The magnetic susceptibility and the optical spectral data reveal octahedral coordination for Mn, Co and Ni complexes. From the electronic spectra of Co and NI complexes, the ligand field parameters, Dq and β, are calculated.

The occurrence in plants of an enzyme system catalyzing the cleavage of uridine has been demonstrated. The enzyme from Phaseolus radiatus was purified about 132-fold with 24% recovery by a combination of procedures involving mild acid treatment, ammonium sulphate fractionation, negative adsorption on calcium phosphate gel and DEAE-cellulose chromatography. The enzyme cleaves uridine to uracil and ribose in the absence of phosphate indicating that the mechanism of cleavage was hydrolytic rather than phosphorolytic. The enzyme is specific to uridine and does not act on other purine and pyrimidine compounds. The enzyme shows maximum activity at pH 7.4 and has a temperature optimum of 45 °. It does not require metal ions for activity. Inhibition of the enzyme by p-chloromercuribenzoate as well as N-ethylmaleimide and the reversal of p-chloromercuribenzoate inhibition by sulfhydryl agents indicate the probable involvement of readily oxidizable sulfhydryl groups in enzyme activity.

The hydrolysis of cupric ion has been studied at various ionic strengths (0·01, 0·05, 0·1 and 0·5 M). The results are analyzed employing 'core + links' theory, log-log plot, normalization plot, and extrapolation method for obtaining the pure mononuclear curve. The stability constants of Cu2(OH)2++, Cu3(OH)4++, Cu(OH)+ and Cu(OH)2 have been reported.

Noble metal substituted ionic catalysts were synthesized by solution combustion technique. The compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Zirconia supported compounds crystallized in tetragonal phase. The solid solutions of ceria with zirconia crystallized in fluorite structure. The noble metals were substituted in ionic form. The water-gas shift reaction was carried out over the catalysts.Negligible conversions were observed with unsubstituted compounds. The substitution of a noble metal ion was found to enhance the reaction rate. Equilibrium conversion was obtained below 250 degrees C in the presence of Pt ion substituted compounds. The formation of Bronsted acid-Bronsted base pairs was proposed to explain the activity of zirconia catalysts. The effect of oxide ion vacancies on the reactions over substituted ceria-zirconia solid solutions was established. (c)2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Manganese dioxide is known to be an important electroactive material for supercapacitors. Generally, delta-MnO2 is subjected to electrochemical characterization studies in aqueous electrolytes of Na2SO4. It exhibits capacitance behaviour in the potential range between 0 and 1.0 V vs. SCE (saturated calomel electrode). In the present study, it is shown that delta-MnO2 exhibits capacitance behaviour in Sr(NO3)(2) electrolytes also. The suitable potential range in this electrolyte is also found to be 0-1.0 V. Specific capacitancemeasured in Sr(NO3)(2) electrolyte is 192 F g(-1). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data confirm that Sr2+ ions get inserted onto delta-MnO2 anoparticles. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. A partially purified sheep liver enzyme that hydrolyzed dinucleotides at the pyrophosphate bond was obtained by solubilizing the 18,000g sediment with n-butanol and fractionating the solubilized enzyme with acetone. The enzyme activity when measured using FAD as substrate, (FAD → FMN + AMP), was optimal at pH 9.7 and temperatures between 30 °–36 ° and at 60 °. The rate of release of FMN with time occurred with an initial lag of 30 sec, a linear increase for 1 min, and a subsequent irregular rate. In the presence of orthophosphate (Pi; 10 μImage ), FMN was released at an uniformly continuous and enhanced rate. 32Pi was not incorporated into the substrate or products. Sodium arsenate counteracted the effects of Pi. The apparent Km and Vmax were 0.133 mImage and 100 units; and 0.133 mImage and 200 units, in the absence and presence of Pi, respectively. The temperature optimum was 42 ° in the presence of Pi.Negative cooperative interactions observed at low concentrations of FAD were abolished by the addition of Pi. The inhibition by AMP was sigmoid and Pi abolished this sigmoidal response. The enzyme hydrolyzed in addition to FAD, NAD+ and NADP+. Nucleoside triphosphates were potent inhibitors of the enzyme activity. The partial inhibition of the enzyme by o-phenanthroline and by p-hydroxymercuribenzoate could be reversed by Fe2+ ions and by reduced glutathione, respectively.

We present a simplified theory of the effective momentum mass (EMM) and ballistic current–voltage relationship in a degenerate two-folded highly asymmetric bilayer graphene nanoribbon. With an increase in the gap, the density-of-states in the lower set of subbands increases more than that of the upper set. This results in a phenomenological population inversion of carriers, which is reflected through a net negative differential conductance (NDC). It is found that with the increase of the ribbon width, the NDC also increases. The population inversion also signatures negative values of EMM above a certain ribbon-width for the lower set of subbands, which increases in a step-like manner with the applied longitudinal static bias. The well-known result for symmetric conditions has been obtained as a special case.
