Plastic cracking of cement mortar and concrete is primarily attributable to desiccation by evaporation from unprotected surfaces. This causes high suctions (negative pressures) to develop in the pore water adjacent to these surfaces. Dissolved salts in the pore water can also contribute significantly to suctions. Quantitative expressions are available for all of the components of the total suction. The development of suctions over time is illustrated by the results of desiccation tests conducted on cement mortars, supplemented by data from the literature. It is shown that ambient conditions conducive to plastic cracking can arise almost anywhere, but that the extremely high suctions that develop in mature cement mortar and concrete do not imply that compression failures should occur A high value of fracture energy is derived from data from the desiccation tests that implies that plastic cracking is characterized by a significant zone of plastic straining or microcracking.

The ractiolysis of a poly(ethylene-co-propylene), Elpro grade P 750 J, marketed by Thai Polypropylene Co. Ltd. for the manufacture of medical goods, was investigated at ambient temperature and melt rheology measured. The roles of calcium stearate, blended with the Elpro as a processing aid, and dioctyl phthalate (DOP), added in various amounts as a radical scavenger, were assessed. Following radiolysis, G' and the viscosity of the polymer melts at 453 K both decreased with increasing radiation dose, even when the mobilizer was present. The results indicated that although the DOP did scavenge radicals, it did not protect the polymer from net chain scission in a low-dose regimen. The value of (G(S) - 4G(X)) was approximately 0.6-0.7. Evaluation of recent data for hydrogen (H) diffusion in magnesium (Mg) yielded a new equation for the diffusion coefficient of H in Mg. This indicates that there can be significant H transport ahead of a stress corrosion crack in Mg at ambient temperature and that H may be involved in the mechanism of stress corrosion cracking in Mg.
