The focus of this research is to explore the applications of the finite difference formulation based on the latency insertion method (LIM) to the analysis of circuit interconnects. Special attention is devoted to addressing the issues that arise in very large networks such as on-chip signal and power distribution networks. We demonstrate that the LIM has the power and flexibility to handle various types of analysis required at different stages of circuit design. The LIM is particularly suitable for simulations of very large scale linear networks and can significantly outperform conventional circuit solvers (such as SPICE).

Tämän työn tavoitteena on skenaarioiden avulla luoda pitkän aikavälin alueellinen sähkökuormien kehitysennuste Rovaniemen Verkko Oy:lle. Pitkän aikavälin kuormitusennusteet ovat välttämättömiä verkon kehittämisen pohjalle, jotta verkko voidaan mitoittaa vastaamaan kuormitusta pitkälle tulevaisuuteen tekniset ja taloudelliset vaatimukset huomioiden. Kuormitusennusteen onkin jatkossa tarkoitus toimia apuvälineenä verkon strategisessa kehittämisessä. Pohjana kuormitusennusteissa on tilastokeskuksen ja Rovaniemen kaupungin väestö- ja työpaikkaennusteet. Väestöennusteiden ja erilaisten rakentamistilastoiden avulla arvioidaan uudisrakentamisen määrä tulevaisuudessa. Uudisrakentamisen kuormitusvaikutuksiin päästään työssä määritettyjen paikallisten ja rakennustyyppikohtaisten sähkön ominaiskulutuksien avulla. Kuormituksien alueellinen sijoittautuminen arvioidaan kaavoituksen ja kaupungin maankäytön toteuttamisohjelman avulla. Työssä tutkitaan myös tulevaisuudessa sähkönkäytössä tapahtuvien useiden muutosten vaikutusta alueelliseen kuormitukseen. Näitä muutoksia ovat muun muassa sähköautojen, hajautetun tuotannon, lämpöpumppujen ja kysynnän jouston lisääntyminen. Myös rakennusten jatkuvasti parantuva energiatehokkuus aiheuttaa muutoksia sähkön kulutukseen.

Microgrid (MG) power system with Distributed Generation (DG) plays an important role to provide reliable, secure, and low carbon emission energy supply for communities, in case of any failure or disturbance of energy supply from the main grid. At the same time, DG also contributes to several technical issues in the MG distribution network. Power quality (PQ) issues are one of the main technical challenges when integrating Renewable Energy (RE) sources in MG network. In this paper, the PQ issues like; power variation, voltage deviation, and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) have been addressed by an impact analysis study on a typical solar PV MG power system in both on-grid and off-grid mode of operation. Analysis results from the study will be helpful in developing an independent MG power system with improved PQ conditions.

Microgrid (MG) power system plays an important role to fulfill reliable and secure energy supply to critical loads of communities as well as for communities in remote area. Distributed Generation (DG) sources integrated in a MG provides numerous benefits, at the same time leads to power quality issues in the MG power distribution network. Power Quality (PQ) issue arises due to the integration of an intermittent nature of Renewable Energy (RE) sources with advanced Power Electronics (PE) converter technology. Also, presence of non-linear and unbalancing loads in MG seems to affect PQ of the energy supply in power distribution network. In this paper, PQ impacts like; power variation, voltage variation, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), and Unbalance voltage level have been analysed in Low Voltage (LV) distribution network of typical MG power system model. In this study, development of MG model and PQ impact analysis through simulation has been done in PSS-Sincal software environment. Analysis results from the study can be used as a guideline for developing a real and independent MG power system with improved PQ conditions.

Combinatorial optimization is a complex engineering subject. Although formulation often depends on the nature of problems that differs from their setup, design, constraints, and implications, establishing a unifying framework is essential. This dissertation investigates the unique features of three important optimization problems that can span from small-scale design automation to large-scale power system planning: (1) Feeder remote terminal unit (FRTU) planning strategy by considering the cybersecurity of secondary distribution network in electrical distribution grid, (2) physical-level synthesis for microfluidic lab-on-a-chip, and (3) discrete gate sizing in very-large-scale integration (VLSI) circuit. First, an optimization technique by cross entropy is proposed to handle FRTU deployment in primary network considering cybersecurity of secondary distribution network. While it is constrained by monetary budget on the number of deployed FRTUs, the proposed algorithm identi?es pivotal locations of a distribution feeder to install the FRTUs in different time horizons. Then, multi-scale optimization techniques are proposed for digital micro?uidic lab-on-a-chip physical level synthesis. The proposed techniques handle the variation-aware lab-on-a-chip placement and routing co-design while satisfying all constraints, and considering contamination and defect. Last, the first fully polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS) is proposed for the delay driven discrete gate sizing problem, which explores the theoretical view since the existing works are heuristics with no performance guarantee. The intellectual contribution of the proposed methods establishes a novel paradigm bridging the gaps between professional communities.

Power system policies are broadly on track to escalate the use of renewable energy resources in electric power generation. Integration of dispersed generation to the utility network not only intensifies the benefits of renewable generation but also introduces further advantages such as power quality enhancement and freedom of power generation for the consumers. However, issues arise from the integration of distributed generators to the existing utility grid are as significant as its benefits. The issues are aggravated as the number of grid-connected distributed generators increases. Therefore, power quality demands become stricter to ensure a safe and proper advancement towards the emerging smart grid. In this regard, system protection is the area that is highly affected as the grid-connected distributed generation share in electricity generation increases. Islanding detection, amongst all protection issues, is the most important concern for a power system with high penetration of distributed sources. Islanding occurs when a portion of the distribution network which includes one or more distributed generation units and local loads is disconnected from the remaining portion of the grid. Upon formation of a power island, it remains energized due to the presence of one or more distributed sources. This thesis introduces a new islanding detection technique based on an enhanced multi-layer scheme that shows superior performance over the existing techniques. It provides improved solutions for safety and protection of power systems and distributed sources that are capable of operating in grid-connected mode. The proposed active method offers negligible non-detection zone. It is applicable to micro-grids with a number of distributed generation sources without sacrificing the dynamic response of the system. In addition, the information obtained from the proposed scheme allows for smooth transition to stand-alone operation if required. The proposed technique paves the path towards a comprehensive protection solution for future power networks. The proposed method is converter-resident and all power conversion systems that are operating based on power electronics converters can benefit from this method. The theoretical analysis is presented, and extensive simulation results confirm the validity of the analytical work.

In this paper a combined subtransmission and distribution reliability analysis of SEQEB’s outer suburban network is presented. The reliability analysis was carried out with a commercial software package which evaluates both energy and customer indices. Various reinforcement options were investigated to ascertain the impact they have on the reliability of supply seen by the customers. The customer and energy indices produced by the combined subtransmission and distribution reliability studies contributed to optimise capital expenditure to the most effective areas of the network.

In this paper, we propose a new load distribution strategy called `send-and-receive' for scheduling divisible loads, in a linear network of processors with communication delay. This strategy is designed to optimally utilize the network resources and thereby minimizes the processing time of entire processing load. A closed-form expression for optimal size of load fractions and processing time are derived when the processing load originates at processor located in boundary and interior of the network. A condition on processor and link speed is also derived to ensure that the processors are continuously engaged in load distributions. This paper also presents a parallel implementation of `digital watermarking problem' on a personal computer-based Pentium Linear Network (PLN) topology. Experiments are carried out to study the performance of the proposed strategy and results are compared with other strategies found in literature.

In this paper, we present an improved load distribution strategy, for arbitrarily divisible processing loads, to minimize the processing time in a distributed linear network of communicating processors by an efficient utilization of their front-ends. Closed-form solutions are derived, with the processing load originating at the boundary and at the interior of the network, under some important conditions on the arrangement of processors and links in the network. Asymptotic analysis is carried out to explore the ultimate performance limits of such networks. Two important theorems are stated regarding the optimal load sequence and the optimal load origination point. Comparative study of this new strategy with an earlier strategy is also presented.

This paper presents an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach for locating faults in distribution systems. Different from the traditional Fault Section Estimation methods, the proposed approach uses only limited measurements. Faults are located according to the impedances of their path using a Feed Forward Neural Networks (FFNN). Various practical situations in distribution systems, such as protective devices placed only at the substation, limited measurements available, various types of faults viz., three-phase, line (a, b, c) to ground, line to line (a-b, b-c, c-a) and line to line to ground (a-b-g, b-c-g, c-a-g) faults and a wide range of varying short circuit levels at substation, are considered for studies. A typical IEEE 34 bus practical distribution system with unbalanced loads and with three- and single- phase laterals and a 69 node test feeder with different configurations are considered for studies. The results presented show that the proposed approach of fault location gives close to accurate results in terms of the estimated fault location.

Low Voltage (LV) electricity distribution grid operations can be improved through a combination of new smart metering systems' capabilities based on real time Power Line Communications (PLC) and LV grid topology mapping. This paper presents two novel contributions. The first one is a new methodology developed for smart metering PLC network monitoring and analysis. It can be used to obtain relevant information from the grid, thus adding value to existing smart metering deployments and facilitating utility operational activities. A second contribution describes grid conditioning used to obtain LV feeder and phase identification of all connected smart electric meters. Real time availability of such information may help utilities with grid planning, fault location and a more accurate point of supply management.

FSodium phosphate tellurite glasses in the system (NaPO3)(x)(TeO2)(1-x) were prepared and structurally characterized by thermal analysis, vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and a variety of complementary solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Unlike the situation in other mixed-network-former glasses, the interaction between the two network formers tellurium oxide and phosphorus oxide produces no new structural units, and no sharing of the network modifier Na2O takes place. The glass structure can be regarded as a network of interlinked metaphosphate-type P(2) tetrahedral and TeO4/2 antiprismotic units. The combined interpretation of the O 1s XPS data and the P-31 solid-state NMR spectra presents clear quantitative evidence for a nonstatistical connectivity distribution. Rather the formation of homootomic P-O-P and Te-O-Te linkages is favored over mixed P-O-Te connectivities. As a consequence of this chemical segregation effect, the spatial sodium distribution is not random, as also indicated by a detailed analysis of P-31/No-23 rotational echo double-resonance (REDOR) experiments. This paper proposes the use of in-network caches (which we call Angels) to reduce the Minimum Distribution Time (MDT) of a file from a seeder – a node that possesses the file – to a set of leechers – nodes who are interested in downloading the file. An Angel is not a leecher in the sense that it is not interested in receiving the entire file, but rather it is interested in minimizing the MDT to all leechers, and as such uses its storage and up/down-link capacity to cache and forward parts of the file to other peers. We extend the analytical results by Kumar and Ross [1] to account for the presence of angels by deriving a new lower bound for the MDT. We show that this newly derived lower bound is tight by proposing a distribution strategy under assumptions of a fluid model. We present a GroupTree heuristic that addresses the impracticalities of the fluid model. We evaluate our designs through simulations that show that our Group-Tree heuristic outperforms other heuristics, that it scales well with the increase of the number of leechers, and that it closely approaches the optimal theoretical bounds.
