The phase evolution of lead titanate processed by the polymeric precursor method was investigated by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the cubic perovskite PbTiO3 (PT) phase is formed from an inorganic amorphous precursor at a temperature of 444 °C. A gradual transition from cubic to tetragonal perovskite PT was observed with the increase of calcination time at this temperature. HRTEM results showed that the cubic PT particles have a size of around 5 nm. The identification of cubic PT as an intermediate phase supports the hypothesis that the chemical homogeneity was kept at the molecular level during the synthesis process, with no cation segregation.

Piezoelectric composite, made from ferroelectric ceramic lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and vegetable based polyurethane (PU) polymer, was doped with a semiconductor filler, graphite. The resulting composite (PZT/C/PU) with 49/1/50- vol. % composition could be poled at lower field and shorter time due to the increased conductivity of the polymer phase following the introduction of graphite. The PZT/C/PU composite showed higher pyroelectric coefficient in comparison with the undoped PZT/PU composite with 50/50-vol. % composition. Also, the PZT/C/PU composite has shown the ability to detect both extensional and flexural modes of simulated acoustic emission (AE) at a distance up to 8.0 m from the source, thus indicating that it may be used for detection of structural damages.

Barium titanate thick films were prepared from mechanically activated powders based on BaCO 3 and TiO 2. The thick films were screen-printed on alumina substrates electroded with Ag/Pd. The BT films were sintered at 850°C for 1 hour. The thickness was 30-75 μm depending of number of layers. The microstructure of thick films and the compatibility between BT layers and substrate was investigated by SEM. The dielectric properties were measured and the results were reported.

Niobium doped barium titanate was prepared using two procedures. First, doped barium titanate was prepared starting from citrate solutions of all components and second, pure barium titanate powder was obtained from the citrate solutions and after that doped. Besides niobium, a small amount of manganese, as acceptor dopant was added. Phase composition, crystal structure, microstructure and dielectric properties were reported. The influence of powder processing on the properties of niobium doped barium titanate was analysed. The grain growth and the concentration of dopants on the dielectric properties were considered. © 2002 Taylor & Francis.

PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN) powder was prepared by citrate organic solution, and barium titanate (BT) seed particles were added to encourage the perovskite phase formation. Sintering was followed using the constant heating rate mode of a dilatometer, and it was observed that the seed concentration affected the PMN shrinkage rate and crystal structure. The study of the lattice parameters of the samples after the sintering process indicates that the diffusion of the titanium and of the barium inside perovskite and pyrochlore PMN phases occurs. Moreover, this substitution provoked a decrease of the lattice parameters as showed by the Rietveld refinement.

The influence of the addition of dopants on the microstructure development and electrical properties of BaTiO3 doped with 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 mol% of Nb and 0.01 mol% of Mn based compounds was studied. Doped barium titanate was prepared using the polymeric precursor method from citrate solutions. The powders calcined at 700°C for 4 hours were analysed by infrared (IR) spectroscopy to verify the presence of carbonates, and by X-ray diffraction (XRD) for phase formation. The phase composition, microstructure and dielectric properties show a strong dependence on the amount of added niobium.

Barium titanate is used extensively as a dielectric in ceramic capacitors, particularly due to its high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss characteristics. It can be made semiconducting by addition of certain dopants and by proper modification of grains and grain boundary properties obtaining very interesting characteristics for various applications. The synthesis method and sintering regime have a strong influence on properties of obtained barium titanate ceramics. Doped barium titanate was prepared with Nb+5 and Y+3 ions as donor dopants, and with Mn+2 ions as acceptor dopant by polymeric precursors method. By this procedure nanosized powders were obtained after calcination. Sintering was performed in the temperature range of 1290°C to 1380°C The microstructure of doped BaTiO3 was performed using scanning electron microscopy. The influence of dopants and sintering temperature on grain size was analysed.

Strontium-modified lead titanate thin films with composition Pb1-xSrxTiO3 were grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using the polymeric precursor method. The structural phase evolution as a function of the Sr contents was studied using micro-Raman scattering, specular reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The results showed a gradual change from tetragonal to cubic structure, the transition occurring at about x = 0.58. The infrared reflectance spectra showed that the frequency of several peaks decreases as the strontium concentration increases. These features are correlated with a decrease in the tetragonal distortion of the TiO6 octahedra as the strontium concentration increases.

Barium titanates doped with Nb5+, and Y3+, were prepared. The starting powders were synthesized from citrate solutions by the Pechini process and partial Pechini process in two steps. Sintering was performed in the range from 1310° up to 1380°C for 2 hours in air atmosphere. The structural study concerning the incorporation of Nb and Y ions in the barium titanate crystal lattice was performed by XRD, XANES and EXAFS techniques. The dielectric properties were analyzed and the relationship between properties and structure of doped barium titanate was established.

Composites made of calcium modified lead titanate ceramic powder and poly (ether-ether-ketone) high performance polymer matrix were prepared in the film form using a hot press. The acoustic and electromechanical properties of the composites have been determined using the ultrasonic immersion technique and piezoelectric spectroscopy, respectively. The composite film with 60 - 40 vol.% PTCa/PEEK was tested as acoustic emission detector. Preliminary results shown that the piezo composite can be used as sensor to evaluate the behavior of materials.

This paper focuses on the magnetoelectric coupling (ME) at room temperature in lanthanum modified bismuth ferrite thin film (BLFO) deposited on SrRuO 3-buffered Pt/TiO 2/SiO 2/Si(100) substrates by the soft chemical method. BLFO film was coherently grown at a temperature of 500 °C. The magnetoelectric coefficient measurement was performed to evidence magnetoelectric coupling behavior. Room temperature magnetic coercive field indicates that the film is magnetically soft. The maximum magnetoelectric coefficient in the longitudinal direction was close to 12 V/cmOe. Dielectric permittivity and dielectric loss demonstrated only slight dispersion with frequency due the less two-dimensional stress in the plane of the film. Polarization reversal was investigated by applying dc voltage through a conductive tip during the area scanning. We observed that various types of domain behavior such as 71 ° and 180° domain switching, and pinned domain formation occurred. Copyright © 2009 American Scientific Publishers All rights reserved.

This study describes observation of piezoelectric response of Ba(Zr 0.10Ti 0.90.O3 ceramics modified with tungsten (BZT:2W) by the mixed oxide method. According to X ray diffraction analysis, the ceramics are free of secondary phases. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses reveals the absence of segregates in the grain boundaries indicates the high solubility of WO3 in the BZT matrix. The dielectric permittivity measured at a frequency of 10 KHz was equal to 6500 with dieletric loss of 0.15. A typical hysteresis loop was observed at room temperature. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) analyses reveals that substitution of W6+ by Ti4+ causes distortion in the crystal structure changing lattice parameter. Polarization reversal was investigated by applying dc voltage through a conductive tip during the area scanning. Piezoelectric force microscopy images reveals that in-plane response may not change its sign upon polarization switching, while the out-of-plane response does. Dielectric spectroscopy was used in this study to examine polycrystalline vanadium and tungstendoped BaZr 0.1Ti 0.90O 3 (BZT10:2V and BZT10:2W) ceramics obtained by the mixed oxide method. According to X-ray diffraction analyses, addition of vanadium and tungsten lead to ceramics free of secondary phases. SEM analyses reveal that both dopants result in slower oxygen ion motion and consequently lower grain growth rate. Temperature dependence dielectric study showed normal ferroelectric to paraelectric transition well above the room temperature for the BZT10 and BZT10:2V ceramics. However, BZT10:2W ceramic showed a relaxor-like behavior near phase transition characterized by the empirical parameter γ. Piezoelectric force microscopy images reveals that the piezoelectric coefficient is strongly influenced by type of donor dopant suggesting promising applications for dynamic random access memories and data-storage media.
