This paper deals with an unusual application for a copolymer of styrene-1 % divinylbenzene bearing high amount of aminomethyl groups for anion-exchange and affinity chromatography. The so-called aminomethyl resin (AMR), to date only employed for peptide synthesis, swelled appreciably in water and was used successfully to purify negatively charged peptides. By correlating swelling degree of beads with pH of the media, it was possible to estimate that the AMR amino group pK(a) is approximately 5.5. In addition, the synthesized acetyl-(NANP)(3)-AMR succeeded in the affinity interaction with large antibody molecules related to malaria transmission and raised previously against this dodecapeptide sequence. Objective: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of various surface treatments for resin-modified glass-ionomer restorative materials by determining dye uptake spectrophotometrically. Method and materials: Two hundred twenty-four specimens, 4.1 mm in diameter and 2.0 mm thick, were made of 3 materials: Vitremer, Fuji II LC, and Photac-Fil Aplicap. Specimens were divided into 15 groups. The positive and negative control specimens remained unprotected, while the experimental specimens were protected with Heliobond light-activated bonding resin, Colorama nail varnish, or surface coatings indicated by the manufacturers of the glass-ionomer materials. Finishing Gloss for Vitremer, Fuji Varnish for Fuji II LC, and Ketac Glaze for Photac-Fil. The disks were immersed in 0.05% methylene blue for 24 hours except for the negative control group, which was immersed in deionized water. After 24 hours, the disks were removed, washed, and individually placed in 1 mL of 65% nitric acid for 24 hours. The solutions were centrifuged and the spectrophotometric absorbance was determined at 606 nm. The dye uptake was expressed in micrograms of dye per milliliter, and the results were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: There were no differences in dye uptake among the 3 resin-modified glass-ionomer restorative materials, however, all of them required surface protection. Conclusion: the best surface protection for the 3 evaluated materials was obtained with Heliobond light-activated bonding resin.

A novel epoxy resin system based on a low viscosity Bisphenol-A (DGEBA)/Bisphenol-F (DGEBF) blend has been investigated for use in tight-wound superconducting magnet impregnation. The principle is to decrease the Bisphenol-A resin system viscosity by adding the low viscosity Bisphenol-F resin. The rheological and mechanical properties of the blend system are compared to the pure Bisphenol-A resin and also to the Bisphenol-F resin both cured with acid anhydride. For the vacuum/pressure impregnation, both the pure Bisphenol-F resin system and DGEBA/DGEBF blend system can be applied without S-glass fabric between coil layers due to its higher rigidity at low temperature and good resistance to thermal shock. This resin system have been tested for impregnation of copper and NbTi wire wound coils whilst Bisphenol-A resin system have been used for testing Nb3Sn coil impregnation where S-glass braid is present as wire insulation.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of different cross-head speeds on shear bond strength test on the dentin surface. Methods: One hundred and twenty extracted bovine incisors were embedded in polystyrene resin. The specimens were prepared by wet grinding with 320-, 400- and 600-grit Al2O3 paper exposing dentin. After the application of the adhesive system Single Bond (3M) to etched dentin, the composite resin Z-100 (3M) was applied and light cured. The specimens were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 30). The shear bond strength tests were performed with an EMIC DL 500 universal testing machine at four different cross-head speeds: 0.50 (A); 0.75 (B); 1.00 (C); and 5.00 mm/min (D).Results: the mean values of shear bond strength in MPa (SD) were: A, 11.78 (3.91); B, 11.82 (4.78); C, 16.32 (6.45); D, 15.46 (5.94). The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). The results indicated that A = B < C = D. The fracture pattern was evaluated by visual analysis in a stereomicroscope (25 x). The percentage of fractures that occurred at the adhesive interface were: A, 92.5%; B, 91.6%; C, 70.0%; D, 47.0%.
