Spectroscopic study and local coordination of polyphosphate colloidal systems

The interaction between metaphosphate chains and the metal ions Ca2+ and Eu3+ has been studied in water by Eu3+ luminescence, infrared absorption, and P-31 NMR spectroscopy. Two main families of sites could be identified for the metal ions in the aqueous polyphosphate colloidal systems: (1) cagelike sites provided by the polyphosphate chain and (2) a family which arises following saturation of cagelike sites. Occupation of this second family leads to supramolecular interactions between polyphosphate chains and the consequent destabilization of the colloidal system. In the polyphosphate-Ca2+ system, this destabilization appears as a coacervation process. Equilibrium existing between colloidal species as a function of the compositions could be reasoned based on the spectroscopic measurements. The determination of coordination numbers and the correlation of the results with the observation of coacervates show that Eu3+ luminescence properties can be used to probe in a unique way the coacervation process.

Glucose- and insulin-induced phosphorylation of the insulin receptor and its primary substrates IRS-1 and IRS-2 in rat pancreatic islets

The presence of tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins was studied in cultured rat pancreatic islets, Immunoblotting performed with total extracts of islets cultured in the presence of 1.8 or 5.6 mM glucose revealed at least three distinct tyrosine-phosphorylated bands (25 kDa, 95 kDa and 165-185 kDa). After 12 h incubation in medium containing 1.8 mM glucose, a pulse exposition to 11 or 22 mM glucose or to 10(-7) M insulin led to a substantial increase in the phosphorylation of all three bands, with no appearance of novel bands. Immunoprecipitation with specific antibodies demonstrated that the signal detected at 95 kDa corresponds to the beta subunit of the insulin receptor (IR) while the band at 165-185 kDa corresponds to the early substrates of the insulin receptor, IRS-1 and IRS-2. Immunoprecipitation with IRS-I or IRS-2 antisera detected their association with the lipid metabolizing enzyme phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI 3-kinase), Thus, this is the first demonstration that elements involved in the insulin-signalling pathway of traditional target tissues are also present in pancreatic islets and are potentially involved in auto- and paracrine-signalling in this organ.

Spectroscopic study and thermal behavior of trivalent lanthanides and yttrium(III) chelates of EDTA using TG-DSC, FTIR, and TG-DSC coupled to FTIR

Solid-state compounds of yttrium and lanthanide chelates of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), theoretical and experimental infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis, complexometry and TG-DSC coupled to FTIR were used to characterize and to study the thermal decomposition of these compounds. The results provided information about the composition, dehydration, thermal stability, thermal decomposition and identification of gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition of these compounds. The theoretical and experimental spectroscopic data suggest the possible modes of coordination of the ligand with the lanthanum and terbium metal ions. © 2013 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

Normative study and evaluation of age influence on Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in mixed breed dogs]

The aim of this paper was to obtain normative data of auditory evoked potentials from 34 mixed breed dogs and evaluate the age influence. The animals were divided in two groups of different ages and auditory evoked potential was performed with a 85dB stimulus intensity. Group 1 included 16 dogs between 1 and 8 years of age, and group 2 included 18 dogs with over 8 years of age. The length and head diameter were measured and there was no statistical difference between the two groups. In group 1, mean latencies of waves I, III, and V were 1.13; 2.64, and 3.45ms, and the intervals I-III, III-V, and I-V were 1.51; 0.81, and 2.32 ms, respectively. In group 2, the mean latencies of waves I, III and V were 1.15, 2.62, and 3.55ms, and the intervals I-III, III-V, and I-V were 1.47, 0.93, and 2.40ms, respectively. The latencies observed in this study were similar to previous studies conducted by other authors. It was observed that significant differences were present for wave V and intervals III-V and I-V latencies when comparing groups with different ages, consequently this characteristic must be considered during BAEP result interpretation.

Phenomenology of OCD: Lessons from a large multicenter study and implications for ICD-11

This study aimed to investigate the phenomenology of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), addressing specific questions about the nature of obsessions and compulsions, and to contribute to the World Health Organization's (WHO) revision of OCD diagnostic guidelines. Data from 1001 patients from the Brazilian Research Consortium on Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorders were used. Patients were evaluated by trained clinicians using validated instruments, including the Dimensional Yale Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, the University of Sao Paulo Sensory Phenomena Scale, and the Brown Assessment of Beliefs Scale. The aims were to compare the types of sensory phenomena (SP, subjective experiences that precede or accompany compulsions) in OCD patients with and without tic disorders and to determine the frequency of mental compulsions, the co-occurrence of obsessions and compulsions, and the range of insight. SP were common in the whole sample, but patients with tic disorders were more likely to have physical sensations and urges only. Mental compulsions occurred in the majority of OCD patients. It was extremely rare for OCD patients to have obsessions without compulsions. A wide range of insight into OCD beliefs was observed, with a small subset presenting no insight. The data generated from this large sample will help practicing clinicians appreciate the full range of OCD symptoms and confirm prior studies in smaller samples the degree to which insight varies. These findings also support specific revisions to the WHO's diagnostic guidelines for OCD, such as describing sensory phenomena, mental compulsions and level of insight, so that the world-wide recognition of this disabling disorder is increased. Pluralidade cultural e educação física: elaboração de material didático

In 1997, the National Curriculum Parameters (BRASIL, 1997a) proposed the incorporation of the Transversal Themes in all of the knowledge areas. Specifically in the School Physical Education, the teacher working with transversality must stabilish bridges between the body culture practice with these themes. Promote this relationship is not a simple task and there are many problems that stuck the advance of this propose. So, thinking about making didactical formulat teaching stragies and think about the development of their practice. Another challenge is considerate as a beginning in the pedagogic activity the student’s knowledge and experience, as listening during the process of knowledge construction. In this way, the aim of this research is investigate the 8th and 9th grade of the primary school students conception about Cultural Plurality. After this, using the information taken gron the students, we are going to present subisidies to make a textbook, for the teachers and for students, with Physical Education activities possibilies with this Transversal Theme. Keeping in mind the aim of this research, we used the semi-structed interview as a instrument of data collection. The interview was made with 30 students of the 8th and 9th grade the primary school from two statual schools of Rio Claro city. The procediments were executed following the ethics comite requirements. In other to associate the Cultural Plurality with Physical Education, dance and physical adventure activities contents were selected. The results showed that the students know few thinks about this Transversal Themes, because they had apoor knowledge, according to National Curriculum Parameters. In scholar environment and Physical Education classes, there are many cases of prejudice and discrimination, mostly by the leack of ability.
