There is a research knowledge gap for the dry wear data of nitride treated Stainless Steel in high temperature and high vacuum environment. In order to fill this gap, plasma nitriding was done on austenitic Stainless Steel type AISI 316LN (316LN SS) and dry sliding wear tests have been conducted at 25 degrees C, 200 degrees C and 400 degrees C in high vacuum of 1.6 x 10(-4) bar. The two different slider material (316LN SS and Colmonoy) and two different sliding speeds (0.0576 m/s and 0.167 m/s) have been used. The tribological parameters such as friction coefficient, wear mechanism and volume of metal loss have been evaluated. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was used to study the surface morphology of the worn pins and rings. Electronic balancing machine was used to record the mass of metal loss during wear tests. The 2D optical profilometer was used to measure the depth of the wear track. The Plasma Nitride treated 316LN SS rings (PN rings) exhibit excellent wear resistance against 316LN SS pin and Colmonoy pin at all temperatures. However, PN ring vs. Colmonoy pin Pair shows better wear resistance than PN ring vs. 316LN SS pin Pair at higher temperature. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work intends to demonstrate the importance of a geometrically nonlinear cross-sectional analysis of certain composite beam-based four-bar mechanisms in predicting system dynamic characteristics. All component bars of the mechanism are made of fiber reinforced laminates and have thin rectangular cross-sections. They could, in general, be pre-twisted and/or possess initial curvature, either by design or by defect. They are linked to each other by means of revolute joints. We restrict ourselves to linear materials with small strains within each elastic body (beam). Each component of the mechanism is modeled as a beam based on geometrically non-linear 3-D elasticity theory. The component problems are thus split into 2-D analyses of reference beam cross-sections and non-linear 1-D analyses along the three beam reference curves. For the thin rectangular cross-sections considered here, the 2-D cross-sectional non-linearity is also overwhelming. This can be perceived from the fact that such sections constitute a limiting case between thin-walled open and closed sections, thus inviting the non-linear phenomena observed in both. The strong elastic couplings of anisotropic composite laminates complicate the model further. However, a powerful mathematical tool called the Variational Asymptotic Method (VAM) not only enables such a dimensional reduction, but also provides asymptotically correct analytical solutions to the non-linear cross-sectional analysis. Such closed-form solutions are used here in conjunction with numerical techniques for the rest of the problem to predict multi-body dynamic responses more quickly and accurately than would otherwise be possible. The analysis methodology can be viewed as a three-step procedure: First, the cross-sectional properties of each bar of the mechanism is determined analytically based on an asymptotic procedure, starting from Classical Laminated Shell Theory (CLST) and taking advantage of its thin strip geometry. Second, the dynamic response of the non-linear, flexible four-bar mechanism is simulated by treating each bar as a 1-D beam, discretized using finite elements, and employing energy-preserving and -decaying time integration schemes for unconditional stability. Finally, local 3-D deformations and stresses in the entire system are recovered, based on the 1-D responses predicted in the previous step. With the model, tools and procedure in place, we identify and investigate a few four-bar mechanism problems where the cross-sectional non-linearities are significant in predicting better and critical system dynamic characteristics. This is carried out by varying stacking sequences (i.e. the arrangement of ply orientations within a laminate) and material properties, and speculating on the dominating diagonal and coupling terms in the closed-form non-linear beam stiffness matrix. A numerical example is presented which illustrates the importance of 2-D cross-sectional non-linearities and the behavior of the system is also observed by using commercial software (I-DEAS + NASTRAN + ADAMS). We present a detailed study on the behavior of vinylcyclopropanes as masked donor acceptor system toward the stereoselective synthesis of Z-alkylidenetetrahydrofurans. Results of bromenium catalyzed indirect activation of C-C bond of vinylcyclopropanes and concomitant cyclization to alkylidenetetrahydrofuran and other heterocycles have been discussed. The stereoselective formation of the Z-isomer is strongly controlled by the extent of destabilization of one of the gauche conformers of the vinylcyclopropane. The ring-opening/cyclization step was found to be stereospecific as in the case of DA cyclopropanes. The activation of the C-C bond leads to a tight-carbocation intermediate, which is evident from the complete retention of the stereochemistry. The retention of configuration has been established by a necessary control experiment that rules out the possibility of a double inversion pathway. The present results serve as direct stereochemical evidence in support of a tight ion-pair intermediate versus the controversial S(N)2 pathway. A 2D potential energy scan has been carried out at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level theory to obtain the relative energies of the conformers. The Z-selectivity observed has been explained on the basis of the relative population of the conformers and modeling the intermediate and transition state involved in the reaction at M06-2x/6-31+G(d) level. Energy profile for the cyclization step was modeled considering various possible pathways through which cyclization can happen. The methodology has been successfully demonstrated on vinylcyclobutanes as well.

The recently discovered scalar resonance at the Large Hadron Collider is now almost confirmed to be a Higgs boson, whose CP properties are yet to be established. At the International Linear Collider with and without polarized beams, it may be possible to probe these properties at high precision. In this work, we study the possibility of probing departures from the pure CP-even case, by using the decay distributions in the process e(+)e(-) -> t (t) over bar Phi, with Phi mainly decaying into a b (b) over bar pair. We have compared the case of a minimal extension of the Standard Model case (model I) with an additional pseudoscalar degree of freedom, with a more realistic case namely the CP-violating two-Higgs doublet model (model II) that permits a more general description of the couplings. We have considered the International Linear Collider with root s = 800 GeV and integrated luminosity of 300 fb(-1). Our main findings are that even in the case of small departures from the CP-even case, the decay distributions are sensitive to the presence of a CP-odd component in model II, while it is difficult to probe these departures in model I unless the pseudoscalar component is very large. Noting that the proposed degrees of beam polarization increase the statistics, the process demonstrates the effective role of beam polarization in studies beyond the Standard Model. Further, our study shows that an indefinite CP Higgs would be a sensitive laboratory to physics beyond the Standard Model.

Let M be the completion of the polynomial ring C(z) under bar] with respect to some inner product, and for any ideal I subset of C (z) under bar], let I] be the closure of I in M. For a homogeneous ideal I, the joint kernel of the submodule I] subset of M is shown, after imposing some mild conditions on M, to be the linear span of the set of vectors {p(i)(partial derivative/partial derivative(w) over bar (1),...,partial derivative/partial derivative(w) over bar (m)) K-I] (., w)vertical bar(w=0), 1 <= i <= t}, where K-I] is the reproducing kernel for the submodule 2] and p(1),..., p(t) is some minimal ``canonical set of generators'' for the ideal I. The proof includes an algorithm for constructing this canonical set of generators, which is determined uniquely modulo linear relations, for homogeneous ideals. A short proof of the ``Rigidity Theorem'' using the sheaf model for Hilbert modules over polynomial rings is given. We describe, via the monoidal transformation, the construction of a Hermitian holomorphic line bundle for a large class of Hilbert modules of the form I]. We show that the curvature, or even its restriction to the exceptional set, of this line bundle is an invariant for the unitary equivalence class of I]. Several examples are given to illustrate the explicit computation of these invariants.

While the recent discovery of a Higgs-like boson at the LHC is an extremely important and encouraging step towards the discovery of the complete Standard Model (SM), the current information on this state does not rule out possibility of beyond standard model (BSM) physics. In fact the current data can still accommodate reasonably large values of the branching fractions of the Higgs into a channel with `invisible' decay products, such a channel being also well motivated theoretically. In this study we revisit the possibility of detecting the Higgs in this invisible channel for both choices of the LHC energies, 8 and 14 TeV, for two production modes; vector boson fusion (VBF) and associated production (ZH). We perform a comprehensive collider analysis for all the above channels and project the reach of LHC to constrain the invisible decay branching fraction for both 8 and 14 TeV energies. For the ZH case we consider decays of the Z boson into a pair of leptons as well as a b (b) over bar pair. For the VBF channel the sensitivity is found to be more than 5 sigma for both the energies up to an invisible branching ratio (Br-inv) similar to 0.80, with luminosities similar to 20/30 fb(-1). The sensitivity is further extended to values of Br-inv similar to 0.25 for 300 fb(-1) at 14 TeV. However the reach is found to be more modest for the ZH mode with leptonic final state; with about 3.5 sigma for the planned luminosity at 8 TeV, reaching 8 sigma only for 14 TeV for 50 fb(-1). In spite of the much larger branching ratio (BR) of the Z into a b (b) over bar channel compared to the dilepton case, the former channel, can provide useful reach up to Br-inv greater than or similar to 0.75, only for the higher luminosity (300 fb(-1)) option using both jet-substructure and jet clustering methods. This paper deals with an optimization based method for synthesis of adjustable planar four-bar, crank-rocker mechanisms. For multiple different and desired paths to be traced by a point on the coupler, a two stage method first determines the parameters of the possible driving dyads. Then the remaining mechanism parameters are determined in the second stage where a least-squares based circle-fitting procedure is used. Compared to existing formulations, the optimization method uses less number of design variables. Two numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed synthesis method. This paper deals with the Schrodinger equation i partial derivative(s)u(z, t; s) - Lu(z, t; s) = 0; where L is the sub-Laplacian on the Heisenberg group. Assume that the initial data f satisfies vertical bar f(z, t)vertical bar less than or similar to q(alpha)(z, t), where q(s) is the heat kernel associated to L. If in addition vertical bar u(z, t; s(0))vertical bar less than or similar to q(beta)(z, t), for some s(0) is an element of R \textbackslash {0}, then we prove that u(z, t; s) = 0 for all s is an element of R whenever alpha beta < s(0)(2). This result holds true in the more general context of H-type groups. We also prove an analogous result for the Grushin operator on Rn+1.

We consider the issue of the top quark Yukawa coupling measurement in a model-independent and general case with the inclusion of CP violation in the coupling. Arguably the best process to study this coupling is the associated production of the Higgs boson along with a t (t) over bar pair in a machine like the International Linear Collider (ILC). While detailed analyses of the sensitivity of the measurement-assuming a Standard Model (SM)-like coupling is available in the context of the ILC-conclude that the coupling could be pinned down to about a 10% level with modest luminosity, our investigations show that the scenario could be different in the case of a more general coupling. The modified Lorentz structure resulting in a changed functional dependence of the cross section on the coupling, along with the difference in the cross section itself leads to considerable deviation in the sensitivity. Our studies of the ILC with center-of-mass energies of 500 GeV, 800 GeV, and 1000 GeV show that moderate CP mixing in the Higgs sector could change the sensitivity to about 20%, while it could be worsened to 75% in cases which could accommodate more dramatic changes in the coupling. Detailed considerations of the decay distributions point to a need for a relook at the analysis strategy followed for the case of the SM, such as for a model-independent analysis of the top quark Yukawa coupling measurement. This study strongly suggests that a joint analysis of the CP properties and the Yukawa coupling measurement would be the way forward at the ILC and that caution must be exercised in the measurement of the Yukawa couplings and the conclusions drawn from it.

A pair of commuting operators (S,P) defined on a Hilbert space H for which the closed symmetrized bidisc Gamma = {(z(1) + z(2), z(1)z(2)) : vertical bar z(1)vertical bar <= 1, vertical bar z(2)vertical bar <= 1} subset of C-2 is a spectral set is called a Gamma-contraction in the literature. A Gamma-contraction (S, P) is said to be pure if P is a pure contraction, i.e., P*(n) -> 0 strongly as n -> infinity Here we construct a functional model and produce a set of unitary invariants for a pure Gamma-contraction. The key ingredient in these constructions is an operator, which is the unique solution of the operator equation S - S*P = DpXDp, where X is an element of B(D-p), and is called the fundamental operator of the Gamma-contraction (S, P). We also discuss some important properties of the fundamental operator.

One of the most-studied signals for physics beyond the standard model in the production of gauge bosons in electron-positron collisions is due to the anomalous triple gauge boson couplings in the Z(gamma) final state. In this work, we study the implications of this at the ILC with polarized beams for signals that go beyond traditional anomalous triple neutral gauge boson couplings. Here we report a dimension-8 CP-conserving Z(gamma)Z vertex that has not found mention in the literature. We carry out a systematic study of the anomalous couplings in general terms and arrive at a classification. We then obtain linear-order distributions with and without CP violation. Furthermore, we place the study in the context of general BSM interactions represented by e(+)e(-)Z(gamma) contact interactions. We set up a correspondence between the triple gauge boson couplings and the four-point contact interactions. We also present sensitivities on these anomalous couplings, which will be achievable at the ILC with realistic polarization and luminosity.

Let Z(n) denote the ring of integers modulo n. A permutation of Z(n) is a sequence of n distinct elements of Z(n). Addition and subtraction of two permutations is defined element-wise. In this paper we consider two extremal problems on permutations of Z(n), namely, the maximum size of a collection of permutations such that the sum of any two distinct permutations in the collection is again a permutation, and the maximum size of a collection of permutations such that no sum of two distinct permutations in the collection is a permutation. Let the sizes be denoted by s (n) and t (n) respectively. The case when n is even is trivial in both the cases, with s (n) = 1 and t (n) = n!. For n odd, we prove (n phi(n))/2(k) <= s(n) <= n!.2(-)(n-1)/2/((n-1)/2)! and 2 (n-1)/2 . (n-1/2)! <= t (n) <= 2(k) . (n-1)!/phi(n), where k is the number of distinct prime divisors of n and phi is the Euler's totient function.

Three new molecular compounds, Ni-5(bta)(6)(CO)(4)], I, Ni-9(bta)(12)(CO)(6)], II, Ni-9(bta)(12)(CO)(6)]. 2(C3H7NO), III, (bta = benzotriazole) were prepared employing solvothermal reactions. Of these, I have pentanuclear nickel, whereas II and III have nonanuclear nickel species. The structures are formed by the connectivity between the nickel and benzotriazole giving rise to the 5- and 9-membered nickel clusters. The structures are stabilised by extensive pi aEuro broken vertical bar pi and C-H... pi interactions. Compound II and III are solvotamorphs as they have the same 9-membered nickel clusters and have different solvent molecules. To the best of our knowledge, the compounds I-III represent the first examples of the same transition element existing in two distinct coordination environment in this class of compounds. The studies reveal that compound I is reactive and could be an intermediate in the preparation of II and III. Thermal studies indicate that the compounds are stable upto 350(a similar to)C and at higher temperatures (similar to 800(a similar to)C) the compounds decompose into NiO. Magnetic studies reveal that II is anti-ferromagnetic.

This work describes an efficient and stereoselective method for the hydrothiolation and -selenation of buta-1,3-diyne derivatives using diaryl disulfides or diselenides, respectively. In the presence of rongalite (HOCH2SO2Na) and potassium carbonate, buta-1,3-diynes undergo stereoselective addition of the thiolate or selenide anion generated in situ from diaryl disulfides or diselenides to afford the corresponding (Z)-1-sulfanyl-or (Z)-1-selanylalk-1-en-3-yne derivatives, respectively. The reaction of buta-1,3-diynes with diaryl disulfides or diselenides at higher temperature (70 degrees C) gave a mixture of monothiolation/selenation and bisthiolation/selenation products in moderate to good yields.

In this paper we consider polynomial representability of functions defined over , where p is a prime and n is a positive integer. Our aim is to provide an algorithmic characterization that (i) answers the decision problem: to determine whether a given function over is polynomially representable or not, and (ii) finds the polynomial if it is polynomially representable. The previous characterizations given by Kempner (Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 22(2):240-266, 1921) and Carlitz (Acta Arith. 9(1), 67-78, 1964) are existential in nature and only lead to an exhaustive search method, i.e. algorithm with complexity exponential in size of the input. Our characterization leads to an algorithm whose running time is linear in size of input. We also extend our result to the multivariate case.
