Shipboard laboratory index property data, shore-based consolidation tests, and in-situ stress and pore-pressure measurements are used in this study to constrain the stress conditions at ODP Site 808, Nankai Trough. Results of these tests are presented along with additional interpretations of porosity rebound and permeability. The sediment at Site 808 is highly affected by excess fluid pressures throughout the sediment column. Excess fluid pressure is severe below the major fault boundary, the décollement. The in-situ measurement of lateral stresses, which are shallow in the sediment section, confirms that the principal stress direction is rotated from a "normal" basin-type condition where the principal stress direction is vertical.

Increased seawater pCO2, and in turn 'ocean acidification' (OA), is predicted to profoundly impact marine ecosystem diversity and function this century. Much research has already focussed on calcifying reef-forming corals (Class: Anthozoa) that appear particularly susceptible to OA via reduced net calcification. However, here we show that OA-like conditions can simultaneously enhance the ecological success of non-calcifying anthozoans, which not only play key ecological and biogeochemical roles in present day benthic ecosystems but also represent a model organism should calcifying anthozoans exist as less calcified (soft-bodied) forms in future oceans. Increased growth (abundance and size) of the sea anemone (Anemonia viridis) population was observed along a natural CO2 gradient at Vulcano, Italy. Both gross photosynthesis (PG) and respiration (R) increased with pCO2 indicating that the increased growth was, at least in part, fuelled by bottom up (CO2 stimulation) of metabolism. The increase of PG outweighed that of R and the genetic identity of the symbiotic microalgae (Symbiodinium spp.) remained unchanged (type A19) suggesting proximity to the vent site relieved CO2 limitation of the anemones' symbiotic microalgal population. Our observations of enhanced productivity with pCO2, which are consistent with previous reports for some calcifying corals, convey an increase in fitness that may enable non-calcifying anthozoans to thrive in future environments, i.e. higher seawater pCO2. Understanding how CO2-enhanced productivity of non- (and less-) calcifying anthozoans applies more widely to tropical ecosystems is a priority where such organisms can dominate benthic ecosystems, in particular following localized anthropogenic stress.

High resolution stratigraphy based on oxygen isotope ratios of the planktonic foraminifers Neogloboquadrina dutertrei (d'Orbigny), Globigeriniodes ruber (d'Orbigny), and Globigerina bulloides (d'Orbigny), magnetic susceptibility, and calcium carbonate content covers the sedimentary record of ODP Hole 728A drilled on the Oman Margin from approximately 10 k.y. to 525 k.y., comprising isotopic stages 1-13. Below stage 13 isotopic stage boundaries cannot be defined with certainty in our data. Sediment accumulation rates were calculated from the isotopic record of N. dutertrei by matching it with the age model SPECMAP curve. During the glacial periods sediment accumulation rates were higher than during the interglacial periods, reflecting increased input from the shelf during low-stands of sea level and increased eolian input. Periodograms for the past 524 k.y. on oxygen isotope records of N. dutertrei, G. ruber, and G. bulloides, on calcium carbonate content, magnetic susceptibility, and on a foraminiferal fragmentation record show powers matching the Milankovitch periodicities. High powers are concentrated around 103 k.y. In the spectra of oxygen isotope ratios of N. dutertrei, magnetic susceptibility, and foraminiferal fragmentation these are significant at the 80% confidence level with respect to a first order autoregressive model. Power concentrations near 43 k.y., matching obliquity, are present but subdued in all spectra. Power concentrations near 23 k.y., matching precession, are significant in the spectra of the oxygen isotope record of N. dutertrei, magnetic susceptibility, and calcium carbonate content record. Fragmentation of planktonic foraminifers increased during the interglacial periods. This is attributed to dissolution of the tests in an expanded oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), where undersaturation of calcium carbonate is caused by enhanced production in the euphotic zone, which would suggest stronger monsoonal induced upwelling during interglacial periods. Extension of the OMZ could also be increased by outflow of low oxygen marginal basin bottom water.

By incorporating recently available remote sensing data, we investigated the mass balance for all individual tributary glacial basins of the Lambert Glacier-Amery Ice Shelf system, East Antarctica. On the basis of the ice flow information derived from SAR interferometry and ICESat laser altimetry, we have determined the spatial configuration of eight tributary drainage basins of the Lambert-Amery glacial system. By combining the coherence information from SAR interferometry and the texture information from SAR and MODIS images, we have interpreted and refined the grounding line position. We calculated ice volume flux of each tributary glacial basin based on the ice velocity field derived from Radarsat three-pass interferometry together with ice thickness data interpolated from Australian and Russian airborne radio echo sounding (RES) surveys and inferred from ICESat laser altimetry data. Our analysis reveals that three tributary basins have a significant net positive imbalance, while five other subbasins are slightly positive or close to zero balance. Overall, in contrast to previous studies, we find that the grounded ice in Lambert Glacier-Amery Ice Shelf system has a positive mass imbalance of 22.9 ± 4.4 Gt/a. The net basal melting for the entire Amery Ice Shelf is estimated to be 27.0 ± 7.0 Gt/a. The melting rate decreases rapidly from the grounding zone to the ice shelf front. Significant basal refreezing is detected in the downstream section of the ice shelf. The mass balance estimates for both the grounded ice sheet and the ice shelf mass differ substantially from other recent estimates.

The purpose of this study was to investigate presence and potential accumulation of cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (cVMS) in the Arctic environment. Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5), and dodecamethylcy-clohexasiloxane (D6) were analyzed in sediment, Zooplankton, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), shorthorn sculpin (Myxocephalus scorpius), and bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus) collected from the Svalbard archipelago within the European Arctic in July 2009. Highest levels were found for D5 in fish collected from Adventfjorden, with average concentrations of 176 and 531 ng/g lipid in Atlantic cod and shorthorn sculpin, respectively. Decreasing concentration of D5 in sediment collected away from waste water outlet in Adventfjorden indicates that the local settlement of Longyearbyen is a point source to the local aquatic environment. Median biota sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) calculated for D5 in Adventfjorden were 2.1 and 1.5 for Atlantic cod and shorthorn sculpin, respectively. Biota concentrations of D5 were lower or below detection limits in remote and sparsely populated regions (Kongsfjorden and Liefdefjorden) compared to Adventfjorden. The levels of cVMS were found to be low or below detection limits in bearded seal blubber and indicate a low risk for cVMS accumulation within mammals. Accumulation of cVMS in fish appears to be influenced by local exposure from human settlements within the Arctic.
