The ultrasonic degradation of two dyes, Rhodamine B (C28H31ClN2O3) and Rhodamine Blue (C28H32N2O3), were studied in the absence of catalyst and in the presence of two catalysts (combustion-synthesized anatase TiO2 and commercial Degussa P-25 TiO2. The rate of degradation of catalyzed reaction was higher than that obtained with in the absence of the catalysts. Among the catalysts, combustion-synthesized anatase TiO2 degraded the dyes faster when compared to the degradation with commercial Degussa P-25 catalyst. A Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model was developed and the kinetic rate parameters were determined. The effect of other operating parameters, such as initial concentration, pH, temperature, and power intensity, was also investigated. The degradation rate increased with decreasing pH, increasing temperature, and higher intensity.

The activity of NiO in NiO-MgO rock salt solid solution has been measured at 1300 K by employing a solid-state galvanic cell: Pt,Ni+ NiO||(CaO)ZrO2||Ni + (Nix,Mgl-x)O, Pt. A high-density tube of Zr02-15 mol% CaO has been used as the solid electrolyte for the emf measurements. The activities of the component oxides in the rock salt solid solution exhibit negative deviation from ideality at the temperature of investigation. The solid solution obeys regular solution behavior at 1300 K. The value of the regular solution parameter is found to be -12000 ((l000) J mol-1. The composition dependence of ΔGEx obtained in this study agrees reasonably well with the calorimetric data reported in the literature for NiO-MgO solid solution.

A simple technique for the measurement of the beam shape parameters of pulsed lasers, with just a single pulse of the laser is described. It involves the use of several beam dividers inclined at very small angles to the beam axis, reflecting the beam back to a screen or a phosphor placed near the exit of the laser. The reflected images are then photographed by a camera to yield the beam parameters.

In this paper, a different type of cross flow dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor was designed and tested. Here the gas flow is perpendicular to the barrier discharge electrode. Discharge plasma was utilized to oxidize NO contained in the exhaust gas to NO2 and subsequent NO2 removal can be improved using an adsorbent system. A detailed study of DeNO(X) in a stationary diesel engine exhaust was carried out using pulsed electrical discharges/adsorbent processes. Activated alumina (Al2O3) and MS-13x were used as adsorbents at room temperature. The main emphasis is laid on the removal of NOX from the filtered diesel engine exhaust. In filtered exhaust environment, the cross flow reactor along with adsorbent exhibits a superior performance with regard to NOX removal when compared to that with axial flow of gas. In this paper we bring out a relative comparison of discharge plasma and plasma-adsorbent process at various gas flow rates, ranging from 2 l/min to 25 l/min. The discharge plasma-adsorbent assisted barrier discharge reactor has shown promising results in NOX removal at high flow rates.

Digoxigenin (DIG)-labeled DNA probe was developed for a sensitive and rapid detection of the Tobacco streak virus (TSV) isolates in India by dot-blot and tissue print hybridization techniques. DIG-labeled DNA probe complementary to the coat protein (CP) region of TSV sunflower isolate was designed and used to detect the TSV presence at field levels. Dot-blot hybridization was used to check a large number of TSV isolates with a single probe. In addition, a sensitivity of the technique was examined with the different sample extraction methods. Another technique, the tissue blot hybridization offered a simple, reliable procedure and did not require a sample processing. Thus, both non-radioactively labeled probe techniques could facilitate the sample screening during TSV outbreaks and offer an advantage in quarantine services.

Large-area PVDF thin films have been prepared and characterized for quasi-static and high frequency dynamic strain sensing applications. These films are prepared using hot press method and the piezoelectric phase (beta-phase) has been achieved by thermo-mechanical treatment and poling under DC field. The fabricated films have been characterized for quasi-static strain sensing and the linear strain-voltage relationship obtained is promising. In order to evaluate the ultrasonic sensing properties, a PZT wafer has been used to launch Lamb waves in a metal beam on which the PVDF film sensor is bonded at a distance. The voltage signals obtained from the PVDF films have been compared with another PZT wafer sensor placed on the opposite surface of the beam as a reference signal. Due to higher stiffness and higher thickness of the PZT wafer sensors, certain resonance patterns significantly degrade the sensor sensitivity curves. Whereas, the present results show that the large-area PVDF sensors can be superior with the signal amplitude comparable to that of PZT sensors and with no resonance-induced effect, which is due to low mechanical impedance, smaller thickness and larger area of the PVDF film. Moreover, the developed PVDF sensors are able to capture both A(0) and S-0 modes of Lamb wave, whereas the PZT sensors captures only A(0) mode in the same scale of voltage output. This shows promises in using large-area PVDF films with various surface patterns on structures for distributed sensing and structural health monitoring under quasi-static, vibration and ultrasonic situations. The performance of reinforced earth structures depends on the mobilization of interfacial shearing resistance between soil and reinforcement. This criterion typically eliminates the use of fine-grained soil as a backfill material in reinforced earth structures. Considering the distribution of induced interfacial shear stress in soil around the surface of the reinforcement, it has been shown that only a thin zone of frictional material around the reinforcement is required to mobilize almost full interfacial shearing resistance of sand. Six series of pullout tests have been conducted, with different types of reinforcement, to study the effect of thickness of sand (frictional material) around the reinforcement on the pullout resistance. Sawdust and kaolin clay have been used as bulk backfill material, providing the soil with negligible friction. With low-friction-strength soil as bulk material, a 15-mm thickness of sand around the reinforcement is required to increase the interfacial shearing resistance to that with sand as the bulk material. With this new technique, low-frictional fine-grained soils can be used as bulk backfill material in reinforced earth constructions.
