The self-assembly of a modified fragment of the amyloid beta peptide, based on sequence A beta(16-20), KLVFF, extended to give AAKLVFF is studied in methanol. Self-assembly into peptide nanotubes is observed, as confirmed by electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering. The secondary structure of the peptide is probed by FTIR and circular dichroism, and UV/visible spectroscopy provides evidence for the important role of aromatic interactions between phenylalanine residues in driving beta-sheet self-assembly. The beta-sheets wrap helically to form the nanotubes, the nanotube wall comprising four wrapped beta-sheets. At higher concentration, the peptide nanotubes form a nematic phase that exhibits spontaneous flow alignment as observed by small-angle neutron scattering.

Nanofilm deposits of TiO2 nanoparticle phytates are formed on gold electrode surfaces by 'directed assembly' methods. Alternate exposure of a 3-mercapto-propionic acid modified gold surface to (i) a TiO2 sol and (ii) an aqueous phytic acid solution (pH 3) results in layer-by-layer formation of a mesoporous film. Ru(NH3)(6)(3+) is shown to strongly adsorb/accumulate into the mesoporous structure whilst remaining electrochemically active. Scanning the electrode potential into a sufficiently negative potential range allows the Ru(NH3)(6)(3+) complex to be reduced to Ru(NH3)(6)(2+) which undergoes immediate desorption. When applied to a gold coated quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor, electrochemically driven adsorption and desorption processes in the mesoporous structure become directly detectable as a frequency response, which corresponds directly to a mass or density change in the membrane. The frequency response (at least for thin films) is proportional to the thickness of the mass-responsive film, which suggests good mechanical coupling between electrode and film. Based on this observation, a method for the amplified QCM detection of small mass/density changes is proposed by conducting measurements in rigid mesoporous structures. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Terminally protected acyclic tripeptides containing tyrosine residues at both termini self-assemble into nanotubes in crystals through various non-covalent interactions including intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The nanotube has an average internal diameter of 5 angstrom (0.5 nm) and the tubular ensemble is developed through the hydrogen-bonded phenolic-OH side chains of tyrosine (Tyr) residues [Org. Lett. 2004, 6, 4463]. We have synthesized and studied several tripeptides 3-6 to probe the role of tyrosine residues in nanotube structure formation. These peptides either have only one Tyr residue at N- or C-termini or they have one or two terminally located phenylalanine (Phe) residues. These tripeptides failed to form any kind of nanotubular structure in the solid state. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of these peptides 3-6 clearly demonstrate that substitution of any one of the terminal Tyr residues in the Boc-Tyr-X-Tyr-OMe (X=VaI or Ile) sequence disrupts the formation of the nanotubular structure indicating that the presence of two terminally located Tyr residues is vital for nanotube formation. Terminally protected acyclic tripeptides Boc-Tyr(1)-Val(2)-Tyr(3)-OMe 1 and Boc-Tyr(1)-lle(2)-Tyr(3)-OMe 2 self-assemble into nanotubes in crystals through various noncovalent interactions with an average internal diameter of 5 Angstrom (0.5 nm), and the tubular ensemble is developed through the hydrogen-bonded side chains of tyrosine residues. The inside of the hollow nanotubular structures is hydrophilic; however, no solvent molecules have been crystallographically detected.

A number of Au/TiO2 catalysts have been prepared by a variety of methods in order to assess the affect of catalysts preparation methods on performance, catalyst contamination and the interplay between them. Their activity was studied in a pulse flow microreactor and it was found that preparation methods designed to eliminate impurities lead to more active samples. The effect of chlorine is often cited to be detrimental in the literature, but we have quantified it using XPS. It was found that the activity decreased in a nearly linear fashion with an increasing amount of this element at the surface. It is generally considered that catalysts prepared by the incipient wetness (IW) technique are ineffective for CO oxidation, but we show here that, by appropriate preparation methods, high activity IW catalysts can be made.

The acute hippocampal brain slice preparation is an important in vitro screening tool for potential anticonvulsants. Application of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) or removal of external Mg2+ ions induces epileptiform bursting in slices which is analogous to electrical brain activity seen in status epilepticus states. We have developed these epileptiform models for use with multi-electrode arrays (MEAs), allowing recording across the hippocampal slice surface from 59 points. We present validation of this novel approach and analyses using two anticonvulsants, felbamate and phenobarbital, the effects of which have already been assessed in these models using conventional extracellular recordings. In addition to assessing drug effects on commonly described parameters (duration, amplitude and frequency), we describe novel methods using the MEA to assess burst propagation speeds and the underlying frequencies that contribute to the epileptiform activity seen. Contour plots are also used as a method of illustrating burst activity. Finally, we describe hitherto unreported properties of epileptiform, bursting induced by 100 mu M 4-AP or removal of external Mg2+ ions. Specifically, we observed decreases over time in burst amplitude and increase over time in burst frequency in the absence of additional pharmacological interventions. These MEA methods enhance the depth, quality and range of data that can be derived from the hippocampal slice preparation compared to conventional extracellular recordings. it may also uncover additional modes of action that contribute to anti-epileptiform drug effects. How can a bridge be built between autonomic computing approaches and parallel computing system? The work reported in this paper is motivated towards bridging this gap by proposing swarm-array computing, a novel technique to achieve autonomy for distributed parallel computing systems. Among three proposed approaches, the second approach, namely 'Intelligent Agents' is of focus in this paper. The task to be executed on parallel computing cores is considered as a swarm of autonomous agents. A task is carried to a computing core by carrier. agents and can be seamlessly transferred between cores in the event of a pre-dicted failure, thereby achieving self-ware objectives of autonomic computing. The feasibility of the proposed approach is validated on a multi-agent simulator.

The work reported in this paper proposes 'Intelligent Agents', a Swarm-Array computing approach focused to apply autonomic computing concepts to parallel computing systems and build reliable systems for space applications. Swarm-array computing is a robotics a swarm robotics inspired novel computing approach considered as a path to achieve autonomy in parallel computing systems. In the intelligent agent approach, a task to be executed on parallel computing cores is considered as a swarm of autonomous agents. A task is carried to a computing core by carrier agents and can be seamlessly transferred between cores in the event of a predicted failure, thereby achieving self-* objectives of autonomic computing. The approach is validated on a multi-agent simulator.

How can existing technologies be merged to provide a solution for self-managing systems? The work reported in this paper aims to answer these questions by proposing Swarm-Array Computing, a novel technique inspired from swarm robotics and built on the foundations of autonomic and parallel computing paradigms. Two approaches based on intelligent cores and intelligent agents are proposed to achieve autonomy in parallel computing systems. The feasibility of the proposed approaches is validated on a multi-agent simulator.

This paper makes a contribution in bridging the theory and practice of the polyhedral model for designing parallel algorithms. Although the theory of polyhedral model is well developed, designers of massively parallel algorithms are unable to benefit from the theory due to the lack of software tools that incorporate the wide range of transformations that are possible in the model. The Uniformization tool that we developed was the first to integrate a number of techniques and to completely automate the transformation step allowing designers to explore a wide range of feasible designs from high-level specifications.
