Optically transparent membranes from bacterial cellulose (BC)/polycaprolactone (PCL) have been prepared by impregnation of PCL acetone solution into dried BC membranes. UV-Vis measurements showed an increase on transparency in BC/PCL membrane when compared with pristine BC. The good transparency of the BC/PCL can be related to the presence of BC nanofibers associated with deposit of PCL nano-sized spherulites which are smaller than the wavelength of visible light and practically free of light scattering. XRD results show that cellulose type I structure is preserved inside the BC/PCL membrane, while the mechanical properties suggested indicated that PCL acts as a plasticizer for the BC membrane. The novel BC/PCL membrane could be used for preparation of fully biocompatible flexible display and biodegradable food packaging.

Optimization of the major properties of anodes based on proton conductors, such as microstructure, conductivity and chemical stability, is yet to be achieved. In this study we investigated the influence of indium on the chemical stability, microstructural and electrical characteristics of proton conducting NiO-BaCe0.9-xInxY0.1O 3-δ (NiO-BCIYx) anodes. Four compositions of cermet anode substrates NiO-BCIYx were prepared using the method of evaporation and decomposition of solutions and suspensions (EDSS). Sintered anode substrates were reduced and their microstructural and electrical properties were examined before and after reduction as a function of the amount of indium. Anode substrates tested on chemical stability in the CO2 atmosphere showed high stability compared to anode substrates based on commonly used doped barium cerates. Microstructural properties of the anode pellets before and after testing in CO2 were investigated using X-ray diffraction analysis. Impedance spectroscopy measurements were used for evaluation of electrical properties of the anode pellets and the conductivity values of reduced anodes of more than 14 S cm-1 at 600 °C confirmed percolations through Ni particles. Under fuel cell operating conditions, the cell with a Ni-BCIY20 anode achieved the highest performance, demonstrating a peak power density 223 mW/cm2 at 700 °C confirming the functionality of Ni-BCIY anodes.© 2013 Elsevier B.V. Alumina thin films have been obtained by resistive evaporation of Al layer, followed by thermal oxidation by means of annealing in appropriate atmosphere (air or O2-rich), with variation of annealing time and temperature. Optical and structural properties of the investigated films reveal that the temperature of 550 °C is responsible for reasonable oxidation, which is accelerated up to 8 times for O2-rich atmosphere. Results of surface electrical resistivity and Raman spectroscopy are in good agreement with these findings. Surprisingly, X-ray and Raman data suggest also the crystallization of Si nuclei at glass substrate-alumina interface, which would come from the soda-lime glass used as substrate. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

In this study, modifications of alumina surface with of alkaline earth metal oxides were studied, using the polymeric precursor method. The modified compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and scanning electron microscopy. The catalytical properties of these new catalysts were evaluated for the transesterification reaction of babassu oil. It is observed that the transesterification reaction of babassu oil with methanol was successfully carried out using the modified alumina samples.

Statistical methods for analyzing agroecological data might not be able to help agroecologists to solve all of the current problems concerning crop and animal husbandry, but such methods could well help them assess, tackle, and resolve several agroecological issues in a more reliable and accurate manner. Therefore, our goal in this article is to discuss the importance of statistical tools for alternative agronomic approaches, because alternative approaches, such as organic farming, should not only be promoted by encouraging farmers to deploy agroecological techniques, but also by providing agroecologists with robust analyses based on rigorous statistical procedures.
