The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine whether the vicinity of root dentine that had been restored with fluoride-releasing materials was at reduced risk for erosive/abrasive wear compared to root dentine restored with a non-fluoride-containing material. According to a randomized complete block design, standardized cavities prepared on the surface of 150 bovine root dentine slabs were restored with glass-ionomer cement, resin-modified glass ionomer, polyacid-modified resin composite, fluoride-containing or conventional composite. Specimens were coated with two layers of an acid-resistant nail varnish exposing half of the dentine surface and half of the restoration. Subsequently, specimens were either eroded in an acidic drink or left uneroded, then exposed to artificial saliva and abraded in a toothbrushing machine. Wear depth in the vicinity of restorations was quantified by a stylus profilometer, based on the nonabraded areas surrounding the erosion/abrasion region. Two-way ANOVA did not demonstrate significant interaction between restoratives and eroded-uneroded dentine (p = 0.5549) nor significant difference among restorative materials (p = 0.8639). Tukey`s test ascertained that the wear depth was higher for eroded than for uneroded groups. Fluoride-releasing materials seemed to negligibly inhibit wear in the vicinity of restored root dentine subjected to erosive/abrasive challenges.

Recent interest in the development and evolution of theory of mind has provided a wealth of information about representational skills in both children and animals, According to J, Perrier (1991), children begin to entertain secondary representations in the 2nd year of life. This advance manifests in their passing hidden displacement tasks, engaging in pretense and means-ends reasoning, interpreting external representations, displaying mirror self-recognition and empathic behavior, and showing an early understanding of mind and imitation. New data show a cluster of mental accomplishments in great apes that is very similar to that observed in 2-year-old humans. It is suggested that it is most parsimonious to assume that this cognitive profile is of homologous origin and that great apes possess secondary representational capacity. Evidence from animals other than apes is scant. This analysis leads to a number of predictions for future research.

Information processing accounts propose that autonomic orienting reflects the amount of resources allocated to process a stimulus. However, secondary task reaction time (RT), a supposed measure of processing resources, has shown a dissociation from autonomic orienting. The present study tested the hypothesis that secondary task RT reflects a serial processing mechanism. Participants (N = 24) were presented with circle and ellipse shapes and asked to count the number of longer-than-usual presentations of one shape (task-relevant) and to ignore presentations of a second shape (task-irrelevant). Concurrent with the counting task, participants performed a secondary RT task to an auditory probe presented at either a high or low intensity and at two different probe positions following shape onset (50 and 300 ms). Electrodermal orienting was larger during task-relevant shapes than during task-irrelevant shapes, but secondary task RT to the high-intensity probe was slower during the latter. In addition, an underadditive interaction between probe stimulus intensity and probe position was found in secondary RT. The findings are consistent with a serial processing model of secondary RT and suggest that the notion of processing stages should be incorporated into current information-processing models of autonomic orienting.

An infant with biliary atresia had the right side of his liver covered with a sodium hyaluronate-based bioresorbable membrane during his initial Kasai portoenterostomy procedure. When his peritoneal cavity was entered 10.6 months (317 days) later for a liver transplant operation there was a remarkable absence of intraabdominal adhesions leading to a smooth operation and an uncomplicated recovery. Objective: To assess hospital prescribing of lipid-lowering agents in a tertiary hospital, and examine continuation of, or changes to, such therapy in the 6-18 months following discharge. Design: Retrospective data extraction from the hospital records of patients admitted from October 1998 to April 1999. These patients and their general practitioners were then contacted to obtain information about ongoing management after discharge. Setting: Tertiary public hospital and community. Participants: 352 patients admitted to hospital with acute myocardial infarction or unstable angina, and their GPs. Main outcome measures: Percentage of eligible patients discharged on lipid-lowering therapy and percentage of patients continuing or starting such therapy 6-18 months after discharge. Results: 10% of inpatients with acute coronary syndromes did not have lipid-level estimations performed or arranged during admission. Documentation of lipid levels in discharge summaries was poor. Eighteen per cent of patients with a total serum cholesterol level greater than 5.5 mmol/L did not receive a discharge prescription for a cholesterol-lowering agent. Compliance with treatment on follow-up was 88% in the group discharged on treatment. However, at follow-up, 70% of patients discharged without therapy had not been commenced on lipid-lowering treatment by their GPs. Conclusions: Prescribing of lipid-lowering therapy for secondary prevention following acute coronary syndromes remains suboptimal. Commencing treatment in hospital is likely to result in continuing therapy in the community. Better communication of lipid-level results, treatment and treatment aims between hospitals and GPs might encourage optimal treatment practices.

In this study of articulation issues related to languages other than English (LOTE), "articulation" is defined and the challenges surrounding it are overviewed. Data taken from an independent school's admission documents over a 4-year period provide insights and reveal trends concerning students' preferences for language study, LOTE study continuity, and reasons for LOTE selection. The data also provides an accounting of some multiple LOTE learning experiences. The analysis indicates that many students who begin a LOTE in the early grades are thwarted in becoming proficient, because (1) continuation in the language is impossible due to unavailability of instruction; (2) expanded learning is hampered by teachers' inability to deal with a range of learners, (3) extended learning is hampered by administrative decisions or policies, or (4) students lose interest in the first LOTE and switch to another. Finally, a call is made for data gathering and research in local contexts to gain a better understanding of LOTE articulation challenges at the local, state, national, and international levels.
