Standard forms of density-functional theory (DFT) have good predictive power for many materials, but are not yet fully satisfactory for cluster, solid, and liquid forms of water. Recent work has stressed the importance of DFT errors in describing dispersion, but we note that errors in other parts of the energy may also contribute. We obtain information about the nature of DFT errors by using a many-body separation of the total energy into its 1-body, 2-body, and beyond-2-body components to analyze the deficiencies of the popular PBE and BLYP approximations for the energetics of water clusters and ice structures. The errors of these approximations are computed by using accurate benchmark energies from the coupled-cluster technique of molecular quantum chemistry and from quantum Monte Carlo calculations. The systems studied are isomers of the water hexamer cluster, the crystal structures Ih, II, XV, and VIII of ice, and two clusters extracted from ice VIII. For the binding energies of these systems, we use the machine-learning technique of Gaussian Approximation Potentials to correct successively for 1-body and 2-body errors of the DFT approximations. We find that even after correction for these errors, substantial beyond-2-body errors remain. The characteristics of the 2-body and beyond-2-body errors of PBE are completely different from those of BLYP, but the errors of both approximations disfavor the close approach of non-hydrogen-bonded monomers. We note the possible relevance of our findings to the understanding of liquid water.

The ballistic spin transport in one-dimensional waveguides with the Rashba effect is studied. Due to the Rashba effect, there are two electron states with different wave vectors for the same energy. The wave functions of two Rashba electron states are derived, and it is found that their phase depend on the direction of the circuit and the spin directions of two states are perpendicular to the circuit, with the +pi/2 and -pi/2 angles, respectively. The boundary conditions of the wave functions and their derivatives at the intersection of circuits are given, which can be used to investigate the waveguide transport properties of Rashba spin electron in circuits of any shape and structure. The eigenstates of the closed circular and square loops are studied by using the transfer matrix method. The transfer matrix M(E) of a circular arc is obtained by dividing the circular arc into N segments and multiplying the transfer matrix of each straight segment. The energies of eigenstates in the closed loop are obtained by solving the equation det[M(E)-I]=0. For the circular ring, the eigenenergies obtained with this method are in agreement with those obtained by solving the Schrodinger equation. For the square loop, the analytic formula of the eigenenergies is obtained first The transport properties of the AB ring and AB square loop and double square loop are studied using the boundary conditions and the transfer matrix method In the case of no magnetic field, the zero points of the reflection coefficients are just the energies of eigenstates in closed loops. In the case of magnetic field, the transmission and reflection coefficients all oscillate with the magnetic field; the oscillating period is Phi(m)=hc/e, independent of the shape of the loop, and Phi(m) is the magnetic flux through the loop. For the double loop the oscillating period is Phi(m)=hc/2e, in agreement with the experimental result. At last, we compared our method with Koga's experiment. (C) 2009 American Institute of Physics. Cross-section ratios sigma(TI)/sigma(SC) of transfer ionization (TI) to single capture (SC) of Cq+- and Oq+-He (q = 1 - 3) collisions in the energy range of 15-440 keV/u (0.8-4.2 v(Bohr)) are experimentally determined. It is shown that sigma(TI)/sigma(SC) strongly depends on the projectile velocity, and there is a maximum for E(keV/u)/q(1/2) approximate to 150. Combining the Bohr-Lindhard model and the statistical model, a theoretical estimate is presented, in reasonable agreement with the experimental data when E(keV/u)/q(1/2) > 35.

The multiphoton ionization of the hydrogen-bonding cluster pyridazine-methanol (C4H4N2-CH3OH) was studied using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer at the wavelengths of 355 and 532 nm. At both wavelengths, a series of protonated C4H4N2-(CH3OH)(n)-H+ cluster ions were obtained. Relevant ab initio calculations were performed with HF and B3LYP methods. Equilibrium geometries of both neutral and ionic C4H4N2-CH3OH clusters, and dissociation channels and dissociation energies of ionic clusters, are presented. The results show that when C4H4N2-CH3OH is vertically ionized, C4H4N2H+ and CH3O are the dominant products via proton transfer reaction. A high energy barrier makes another channel corresponding to the production of C4H4N2H+ and CH2OH disfavored. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Ultrasonic absorption coefficients were measured for butylamine in heavy water (D2O) in the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz and at concentrations from 0.0278 to 2.5170 mol dm(-3) at 25 degrees C; two kinds of relaxation processes were observed. One was found in relatively dilute solutions (up to 0.5 mol dm(-3)), which was attributed to the hydrolysis of butylamine. In order to compare the results, absorption measurements were also carried out in light water (H2O). The rate and thermodynamic parameters were determined from the concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency and the maximum absorption per wavelength. The isotope effects on the diffusion-controlled reaction were estimated and the stability of the intermediate of the hydrolysis was considered while comparing it with the results for propylamine in H2O and D2O. Another relaxation process was observed at concentrations greater than 1 mol dm(-3) in D2O. In order to examine the solution characteristics, proton NMR measurements for butylamine were also carried out in D2O. The chemical shifts for the gamma- and delta-proton in butylamine molecule indicate the existence of an aggregate. From profiles of the concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency and the maximum absorption per wavelength of sound absorption, the source of the relaxation was attributed to an association-dissociation reaction, perhaps, associated with a hydrophobic interaction. The aggregation number, the forward and reverse rate constants and the standard volume change of the reaction were determined. It was concluded from a comparison with the results in H2O that the hydrophobic interaction of butylamine in D2O is stronger than that in H2O. Also, the isotope effect on this reaction was interpreted in terms of the solvent structure.

Propylamine has been selected to investigate the isotope effect of a fast deuteron transfer reaction by ultrasonic relaxation method. Ultrasonic absorption coefficients of propylamine in heavy water (D2O) at 25 degrees C in the concentration range from 0.0107 to 0.6300 mol dm(-3) have been measured by pulse and resonance methods over the frequency range from 0.8 to 220 MHz. A Debye-type single relaxation absorption has been observed in the solution. From the dependence of the ultrasonic relaxation parameters on the concentration and solution pH, the source of the observed relaxation has been attributed to a perturbation of the chemical equilibrium associated with the deuteron transfer reaction. The rate and equilibrium constants have been determined by the measurement of the deuteroxyl ion concentration dependence of the relaxation frequency. Also the standard volume change of the reaction has been determined from the concentration dependence of the maximum absorption per wavelength and the adiabatic compressibility has been calculated from the density and the sound velocity in the solution. These results have then been compared with those obtained for propylamine in light water (H2O). The forward rate constant is greater and the reverse rate constant is smaller in DO than in H2O. The standard volume change for deuteron transfer is greater than that for proton transfer reaction, and the adiabatic compressibility shows a similar trend. These data support an argument that there exists a stronger hydrogen bond in D2O than in H2O. The difference of the stability in the intermediate states, R-ND3+... OD- and R-NH3+... OH-, has also been considered from the results of the isotope effects.

Synthesis, IR spectra, UV-vis spectra and photophysical properties of Gd3+, Eu3+, Tb3+ complexes with 3,4-furandicarboxylic acid and 1,10-phenanthroline are reported. Intramolecular energy transfer process for these complexes is discussed in detail. It is found that the intramolecular energy transfer efficiency depends on the relative positions between the resonance energy levels of the central rare earth ions and the lowest triplet state energies of ligands.

A series of binary and ternary rare earth (Gd, Eu, Tb) complexes with aromatic acids and 1,10-phenanthroline have been synthesized. The lowest triplet state energies of ligands have been obtained by measuring the phosphorescence spectra of binary gadolinium complexes. By comparing the phosphorescence spectra of binary complexes with those of ternary ones, it is found that there exists another intramolecular energy transfer process from the aromatic acids to 1,10-phenanthroline besides the intramolecular energy transfer process between the aromatic acids and the central rare earth ions. The intramolecular energy transfer efficiencies have been calculated by determining phosphorescence lifetimes of binary and ternary gadolinium complexes. The luminescence properties of corresponding europium and terbium complexes are in agreement with the prediction based on energy transfer mechanism. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. Some novel binary and ternary complexes of rare earth(Gd, Eu,Tb) with N-Phenylanthranilic acid and 1,10-Phenanthroline were synthesized by homogenous precipitation and their compositions were characterized by,elemental analysis, IR spectra and UV-Vis spectra, The triplet state energies of N-Phenylanthranilic acid was determined to be 24 330 cm(-1) with the phosphorescence spectra of its gadolinium complexes and the energy match between the ligand and the central rare earth ions was studied. The photophysical properties such as luminescence properties and intramolecular energy transfer match between rare earth ions and ligands and between ligands were discussed. The result indicates that terbium complexes with N-Phenylanthranilic acid and 1,10-Phenanthroline have excellent luminescence properties.

The redox potential, surface composition and oxygen species of a series of complex oxides LaMn1-xFexO3 (x=0-1) having perovskite structure (ABO(3)) have been investigated by means of XI'S. The variation of binding energies referring to Mn2p and Fe 2p under different treatment offerred an obvious evidence of redox between Mn and Fe, which could be expressed as Mn4+ + Fe(3-delta)+ Mn(4-delta)+ Fe3+ Feat Through computer fit three kinds of adsorbed oxygen species (O-I, O-II, O-III) have been evaluated based on the XPS spectra of O1s. From the variation of contents of different oxygen species, it could be concluded that. the redox occuring in the surface might be related with the adsorbed oxygen species O-I and O-II, furthermore the possibility of transfer of electron between adsorption site and oxygen was also discussed.

Seedlings of clover (Triflorium hybridum) were colonized by Bacillus thuringiensis when spores and seeds were co-inoculated into soil. Both a strain isolated in the vegetative form from the phylloplane of clover, 2810-S-4, and a laboratory strain, HD-1, were able to colonize clover to a density of about 1000 CFU/g leaf when seeds were sown in sterile soil and to a density of about 300 CFU/g leaf in nonsterile soil. A strain lacking the characteristic insecticidal crystal proteins produced a similar level of colonization over a 5-week period as the wild type strain, indicating that crystal production was not a mitigating factor during colonization. A small plasmid, pBC16, was transferred between strains of B. thuringiensis when donor and recipient strains were sprayed in vegetative form onto leaves of clover and pak choi (Brassica campestris var. chinensis). The rate of transfer was about 0.1 transconjugants/recipient and was dependent on the plant species. The levels of B. thuringiensis that naturally colonized leaves of pak choi produced negligible levels of mortality in third instar larvae of Pieris brassicae feeding on the plants. Considerable multiplication occurred in the excreted frass but not in the guts of living insects. Spores in the frass could be a source of recolonization from the soil and be transferred to other plants. These findings illustrate a possible cycle, not dependent on insect pathology, by which B. thuringiensis diversifies and maintains itself in nature.

Micelle/water partition coefficients for three dialkyl phthalate esters - dimethyl phthalate ester (DMP), diethyl phthalate ester (DEP) and dipropyl phthalate ester (DPP) were obtained by micellar liquid chromatography (MLC). Experiments were conducted over a temperature range which led to calculation of a Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy of transfer for the phthalate esters. In addition, small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments were conducted with no substantial change observed in micelle size before and after phthalate ester incorporation. Overall, a novel method for obtaining thermodynamic information, based on partitioning data, has been developed for dialkyl phthalate esters using micellar liquid chromatography.

We have made self-consistent models of the density and temperature profiles of the gas and dust surrounding embedded luminous objects using a detailed radiative transfer model together with observations of the spectral energy distribution of hot molecular cores. Using these profiles we have investigated the hot core chemistry which results when grain mantles are evaporated, taking into account the different binding energies of the mantle molecules, as well a model in which we assume that all molecules are embedded in water ice and have a common binding energy. We find that most of the resulting column densities are consistent with those observed toward the hot core G34.3+0.15 at a time around 10^4 years after central luminous star formation. We have also investigated the dependence of the chemical structure on the density profile which suggests an observational possibility of constraining density profiles from determination of the source sizes of line emission from desorbed molecules.

We use many-body theory to find the asymptotic behaviour of second-order correlation corrections to the energies and positron annihilation rates in many- electron systems with respect to the angular momenta l of the single-particle orbitals included. The energy corrections decrease as 1/(l+1/2)4, in agreement with the result of Schwartz, whereas the positron annihilation rate has a slower 1/(l+1/2)2 convergence rate. We illustrate these results by numerical calculations of the energies of Ne and Kr and by examining results from extensive con?guration-interaction calculations of PsH binding and annihilation.
